Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

May 13 2018 Page 5ENVIADOS PARA VIVIR EN EL MUNDO

COMMISSIONED TO LIVE IN THE WORLD In today’s scriptures we hear two different stories about commissioning. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter leads the assembly in prayer that the Lord will choose and commission the person to replace Judas among the Twelve. In the Gospel Jesus prays that his chosen disci-ples might be consecrated, or made holy. Jesus does not ask his Father to keep the disciples separate from the world, but instead sends them out into the world. While we might think that holy people are set apart from the world, we cannot hear today’s scriptures without realizing that God’s holy, chosen people are commissioned to live in the midst of the world, where they can reveal the love of God that makes the entire world holy.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Matthias was added to the eleven apostles (Acts 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26). Psalm — The Lord has set his throne in heaven (Psalm 103). Second Reading — If God so loved us, we also must love one another (1 John 4:11-16). Gospel — Holy Father, keep them in your name, so that they may be one just as we are one (John 17:11b-19).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is over. “Mothering Sunday” was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their “Mother Church.” Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their work-ers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They cru-saded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother’s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war.

May is the month of Mary the Blessed Mother. Pray the Rosary for the peace in the world.

“Dear children, All that my Son, who is the light of love, has done and does, He has done out of love. Also you, my children, when you live in love and love your neighbors, you are doing the will of my Son. Apostles of my love, make yourselves little; open your pure hearts to my Son so that He can work through you. With the help of faith, be filled

with love. But, my children, do not forget that the Eucharist is the heart of faith. This is my Son who feeds you with His Body and strengthens you with His Blood. This is a miracle of love: my Son who always comes anew, alive, to bring life back to souls. My children, by living in love you are doing

the will of my Son and He lives in you. My children, my motherly desire is for you to always love Him more, be-

cause He is calling you with His love. He is giving you love so that you may spread it to all those around you. As a

mother, through His love, I am with you to speak the words of love and hope to you-to speak to you the eternal words

that are victorious over time and death-so as to call you to be my apostles of love. Thank you.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

The gospel takes us back to Holy Thursday evening when Jesus, realizing that his life is also most over, celebrates his farewell meal the Last Supper- with his disciples. The fol-lowing day, Good Friday, would see him suffering a most terrible death on the cross. As we listen to his prayer on the night before he died, we see that his thoughts were on how helpless his friends would be without him. He voices his concern for their welfare knowing that because of their mis-sion they will encounter opposition and hatred in the world. He gives them assurance and prepares them to cope with life after he has gone to the Father. Jesus did not pray that they would be spared these trials and sufferings but that they would remain faithful spite of opposition. These parting words of Christ are meant for us just as much as they were for the apostles. We have been taken into this prayer of Jesus, as he has chosen us to share in his work and make even the smallest of our acts of compassion important. Our calling is to be missionaries dedicated to the truth of God’s word, by the way we live and by our behavior. It is not an easy pathway to travel, but God has not left us to carry out that great endeavor with our own strength. If we place our lives in his hands, he will equip us with the quali-ties of mind, heart and character which are necessary for the task. Often on occasions when we run into difficulties in life, we think God has abandoned us. It would be helpful in times of trouble if we could remember that God did not offer a release from problems, but the ability to cope with them, provided we turn to him for comfort and help. What we have to do is to humbly admit to him that we cannot manage on our own. Only by turning to the wounded Jesus on the cross can we properly face our problems. With his power we can turn despair into hope, sorrow into joy and hatred into love. All that matters is to be one with the living God, feeling his presence like a great reassurance and a deep calm in the heart.
