HISTORY

• 6th century B.C. – Massilia (Marseille) established by Greeks

• 2nd century B.C. – Provence/La Côte d’Azur formed part of Gallia Transalpina

• 4th century A.D. – Marseille recognized as the main center of Greek studies in the west

• 536 A.D. – the region came under Franck rule• 10th century – called the Kingdom of Arles• 1113 – came under the Spanish rule• 1486 – annexed back to the French under King
