atMatthewMcNairSecondaryWhile some courses are required for graduation, many others can be selected to meet your individualinterests and goals. As you move into the latter years of your secondary schooling and your goals areclearer,thesechoicesbecomeevenmoreimportant.Weencourageyoutoexperiencearangeofelectivestosupportthedevelopmentofawell-roundedgraduate.Once you have made your selections, we will design an individual timetable for you. Sometimes thistimetable may not be exactly the way you expected it to be because of class size limits or graduationrequirements.Forthisreasonyoushouldthinkcarefullyaboutthealternatecoursechoicesyoulistonyourprogramplanningsheet;itisquitepossibleyoumayenduptakingoneormoreofthesecourses.You should also be aware that our timetable is driven by student requests. If insufficient numbers ofstudentschooseaparticularcourse, it isnecessary forustodrop it fromthemastertimetable.Whatthismeansisthatallcourseslistedinthisbookmaynotbeofferedeachyearoreverysemester.Sometimesduetostaffingorotherchanges,theremaybesomemodificationsofcourseofferingsanddescriptionswithoutpriornotice.Youmaybe aware that students enteringGrade 8 or 9must complete the Intermediate Programbeforeproceeding to Grade 10 and the Graduation Program. Students in the Graduation Program need tosuccessfully completeaminimumeighty (80) credits (20courses) forgraduation including theGraduationTransitionsrequirement.SpecificcourserequirementsarelistedonPage3.Further, it isexpected that senior studentsdiscussplanswith their counselorandconsultwith thecareeradvisor, post-secondary calendars and websites such as www.educationplanner.ca to ensure thatprerequisitesaremetforprogramsthatyouareinterestedin.McNair’scourseselectionprocessprovidesanexcellent opportunity for personal growth and for exercising decision-making skills. REPORTINGANDEVALUATIONReportcardsareissuedinNovember,February,AprilandJune(attheendofeachquarter).Interimreportsmayberequested from and, in some instances,will be initiatedbytheteacheratanytimeduringtheschoolyear.

Studentsshouldalwaysknowhowtheyareprogressinginall subjects. To help in this process, students are issuedagendabooksinSeptembersoarecordofachievementineachclasscanbemaintained.The breakdown of letter grades used by teachers onmidtermreportsandfinalreportsfollows:

Grade 12 students mayapply for a study period. Any exception to the aboveschedulerequirementmustbeapprovedbytheprincipal.ATTENDANCERegular attendance is an essential element of success.Holidays shouldbe takenduring thescheduledbreaks inthe school year. Absences at other times cannot beauthorized and the loss of time may have seriousconsequences.TEXTBOOKSTextbooks are issued by subject teachers. There is nochargeforschooltexts,butiftheyarenotreturnedorarereturned withmore than normal wear, students will bebilledfortheirreplacement.PROVINCIALEXAMINATIONSProvincial exams must be written in English 12 andCommunications 12. These provincial exams are worth40% of the final mark. Language Arts (English 12 orCommunications12)isnowtheonlyexamrequiredattheGrade12levelforgraduation.TheGrade10and11examsare no longer apart of the graduation program.

1.CHALLENGEStudents may challenge a course if they feel they havemastery of the course material through some meansother than the conventional classroom anddocumentation is not available. If successful, a studentwillreceiveamarkandcreditforthecoursewhichwillberecordedonthegraduationtranscript.

To register for a challenge, students must get theappropriate registration form from a school counselor.This form must be completed and returned to thecounselorbymid-Novemberwithadepositcheque.ThetestwillbewritteninlateFebruaryorMarch.

3.DISTRIBUTEDLEARNINGThe Richmond Virtual School (RVS) is a DistributedLearning secondary school thatusesablendedmodelofonlineandface-to-faceinteractiontodeliverhighqualityanddynamiclearningopportunities.WehaveoneofthehighestsuccessratesinBC.

Our blended Distributed Learning approach providesmore choices for students, teachers, and schools. RVSstudentshavetheflexibilityof learningatdifferenttimesand places. While a regular academic program is very challenging,studentsplanningongoingtouniversityortechnologicalinstitutions may supplement it with certain additionalcourses.MATH9E,10E,11E(Enriched)ThesecoursescoverthesamematerialasMath9,10,or11, but go into greater depth and emphasize problemsolving. They are recommended for high achievingstudents in previous mathematics courses. Studentsplanning on continuing in higher level mathematics atMcNair and at post-secondary institutions shouldconsiderthisoption.

ADVANCEDPLACEMENTAdvanced Placement (AP) is a program which expandsuponthenormalseniorsecondarylevelcurriculumandisintendedtoprovideachallengeforacademicallytalentedand highly motivated students. This course of studies,throughaccelerationandenrichment,allowsthestudentto begin college or university studies while still insecondary school. Students completing an AdvancedPlacement Exam at an acceptable level will receiveadvanced standing and/or credit at many colleges anduniversitiesthroughouttheworld.InNorthAmerica,suchprestigious institutionsasMcGill,Queens,Harvard, Yale,UCLA, MIT, and Stanford give priority placement tostudentswhohaveparticipated inAdvancedPlacement.In British Columbia, all major universities, UBC, SFU,UNBCandUVicrecognizeAPprograms.McNair offers AP Calculus, AP Literature and AP StudioArt. McNair plans to offer AP Biology 12 and APChemistry12forthe2017/18schoolyear.StudentsmayalsoinquireaboutAPMusicTheory-examonly.Studentsmusthavea teacher recommendation toenroll in thesecourseswhich require a solid background in the subjectarea.There isnocourse fee,however, there isa fee forwriting the exam. SUPERPERFORMERThe Super Performer Program is an individually tailoredcourseofstudiesspecificallydesignedtomeettheneedsof athletes andperformingarts studentsparticipatingorseekingtoqualifyatthenationallevel.InordertoqualifyfortheSuperPerformerProgram,studentsmustproducedocumentation to establish eligibility for the program.Arrangements for credit aremadeonan individualbasisthrough your counselor in the Counseling Centre. Theintentofthisprogramistogivecredittostudentsforthemany hours dedicated to their discipline. This will allowforamorebalancedschedulebyprovidingmoretimefortraining

INTEGRATEDACADEMICSThis program presents the Grade 11/12 graduationcourses of Language Arts, Social Studies, Math andScience. Students work intensely on these subjects ininter-disciplinary units. Generally, students arewith thesameteacherforaminimumoftwoclassesaday.Assignmentsaredesignedtoallowstudents topresentawide range of sophistication in their understanding ofcourse concepts, content and skills. In this way theprogram supports students who have experiencedchallenges in a regular classroom setting, but are in theregular grad program culminating in a DogwoodCertificate.An interview with the Integrated Academics teachers, aparent or guardian, and an administrator is requiredbeforeastudentcanbeadmittedtotheprogram.Although students in the IA program complete coregraduation components within the program they retainaccess to elective courses, facilities, clubs and teams atMcNair

McNAIRMINI-SCHOOLFORHIGHLYMOTIVATEDSTUDENTS

TheMcNairMiniSchool isafive-yearprogrambeginningin grade 8. The selection process for this excitingprogrambeginseachJanuary.PHILOSOPHYTheMcNairMini School isdesigned to challengeacademically able,motivated students withan enriched course ofstudies in a cohesive setting. The curriculum will becompressed and enriched to develop critical thinkingskills, creativity and independence. McNair Mini Schoolgraduateshaveanenviablerecordofachievement.Theyhavewonmanyscholarshipsandbeenacceptedtomanyprestigiouspost-secondaryinstitutions.Just as intellectual progress is vital to each student’sfuture; so too is the social aspect of each student’sdevelopment.Therearethreemajorfieldtripseachyeardesigned to foster the acquisition of essential attitudes:leadership, responsibility, initiative, cooperation andmutual respect. Service to the community will beencouraged. Although the students remain together fortheir core courses, they retain access to all the electivecourses,facilities,clubsandteamsofMcNair.Webelievethatthesestudentsshouldplayan importantpart intheenvironmentoftheschool.Grade7studentsmustapplyby the last Friday in February to be eligible for thisprograminGrade8.

MINISCHOOLCURRICULUMThe Mini School core program parallels the regularcurriculum. The courses are offered at an acceleratedpace and in greater depth. TheMini School grade eightclasswill takethefollowingcoursestogetherasagroup:Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education,and French. The grade nine class will take English,Science, Physical Education, and Social Studies together.The grade ten class will take English, Science, PhysicalEducation and Social Studies 10 together. At the seniorlevelEnglish11,12;SocialStudies11andPlanning11aretakentogether.In addition to classroomexperiences, student learning isstimulated through interaction with the community.Guestspeakers,visitstobusinessandindustrialsites,andattendance at cultural activities will enhance thestudent’sMiniSchoolexperience.SOCIALDEVELOPMENTExtendedfieldtripsareanessentialpartoftheprogram.Excursions to sites such as Strathcona Park for outdooreducation will be included. Students will develop theirorganizational abilities, problem solving techniques andcooperativesocialskills.Studentsareencouraged tovolunteer their time,energyandtalentswithintheschoolandinthecommunity.Alloftheseactivitiesaredesigned to foster friendship,mutualsupportandpersonalcommitment.Aspartoftheirsocialdevelopment studentsare encouraged toparticipate in the YoungCanadian Challenge forthe Duke of Edinburgh’sAwards.ASSESSMENTPeriodic assessments will be made of each student’scommitment to the program, as reflected by theirachievement,workhabits,motivation,andattitude.Cost:ThisprogramisfundedbythefamiliesparticipatingintheMini-school.Formore information and applications, please contact aMcNaircounselorat (604)668-6575. STUDENTCOUNCILThe Student Council executive is elected by the studentbody and is responsible for overseeing and coordinatingstudent activities as well as expenditure of students’funds.Itplansdancesandotheractivities,raisesfundsforcharity,supportsathletics,clubsandacademicorspecialcompetitions. The student council provides anopportunityforstudentstogainexperienceinleadershipandresponsibilityYEARBOOKEach year a group of interested students produces ayearbook recording themajor events of the school yearalong with student pictures. Working on this book is avaluableexperienceforanyoneinterestedinthegraphicsarea as a possible career and provides a uniqueopportunity to make a lasting contribution to the gradclass.Interestedstudentsshouldlistenfortheorganizingannouncementorcontactthegeneraloffice.Studentsmaybe interested in taking theYearbook classdescribedintheInformationTechnologysection.MUSICStudents may be involved in Choir or Band either on acredit or a non-credit basis. Students who choose toparticipateareexpectedtocommitthemselvestoregularpractice sessions as well as special performances whichnormallyincludeonemajorfieldtripeachyear.THEATREA full range of Acting and Stagecraft classes is offered.Studentsmayauditionforthemajorproductionswhetherornottheyarecurrentlytakingtheatreclasses.CLUBSArangeofclubsappealingtodiverseinterestsisavailableat McNair (eg. Bhangra Club, Computer Games,Environmental Club). Students are informed of clubactivitiesandmeetingsthroughthedailystudentbulletin.MARLINAIRESAgrade8-12awardwinningserviceclub,theMarlinairessupportrandomactsofkindnessandorganizeslunchtimeevents. Students in the Marlinaires are schoolambassadors and are involved in school and communityserviceactivities.

ATHLETICCOUNCILAthletic Council members are elected by the studentbody.This council organizes school wide events such as theTerry Fox run. Supporters assist school teams throughrefereeing and scorekeeping, and encourage athleticinvolvement.INTER-SCHOOLATHLETICSMcNair isamemberof theRichmondSecondarySchoolsAthletic Association and enters teams in most of thesports carried on under that association. Teams offeredcanvaryaccordingtoavailabilityofcoachesandnumberofinterestedstudents.Studentsareexpectedtoexhibitahigh standard of sportsmanship and must carry a fullcourseloadtoparticipate.

Valedictory andGradDinnerandDancetakeplaceinJune.Thetopall-roundstudentishonored as Valedictorian of the Graduating Class. TheScholarship Committee also selects students to speak astheClassPoetandtheClassProphetatValedictory.

STUDENTSERVICESATMcNAIRThe goal of student services at McNair is to assiststudentstobesuccessfulinallaspectsoftheirschooling.As a result of successful and meaningful experiences inschool,webelieve that studentswillbebetterpreparedtomeetchallengesaftergraduation.Student services include the following: Counseling, theCareer Resource Advisor, the ResourceDepartment, theLibrary,theschoolnurse,andtheCafeteriafoodservices.PROGRAMPLANNING1.IncomingGrade8StudentsProgram planning for Grade 8 students begins in thespringofastudent'sGrade7year.AtthistimetheGrade7 classes visit McNair for a morning. They are giveninformation on many aspects of the school and theirGrade 8 program. They tour the school, participate insome group activities and have lunch. In addition,counselors and administrators hold an informationeveningforparents.Weencourageallparentstoattendand participate actively in their son/daughter's programplanning.2.StudentsatMcNairProgramplanningforstudentswhoarealreadyatMcNairis completed at the school in the Spring each year.Sessions focus on informing students of the graduationrequirementsandprovidingthemwithinformationaboutpost-secondary opportunities and entrancerequirements. This allows students to begin thinkingabout life after secondary school. Students must selectcourses that theywill be happywith as course changeswillbeverydifficulttomakeafterthetimetablehasbeenbuilt.During late August, all registered students receive apackage of materials necessary for school start-up onSeptember5,2017.Ifthereareanyproblemswiththecoursesorifstudentsneed some help in planning timetables, counselors areavailable at the school during the week before schoolopens Aug. 28 – Sept. 1, 2017. CAREERPREPARATIONPROGRAMS(CPP)CPP’s offer an innovative approach to education thatcombines academic studies with realistic workplacements in the community. Career PreparationProgramsaredesignedforstudentswhowishtograduatefrom secondary school and, at the same time, developcareerawarenessandrelevantskills.Studentsmaybegintheir Career Preparation Program as early as Grade 10,however,most courses are completed inGrades 11 and12.All programswill lead to post-secondary at Universities,Colleges, Vocational or Technical Schools. Upongraduation,astudent’stranscriptwillindicatecompletionof the CPP. In some cases, thismay lead to preferentialadmissiontoapost-secondaryprogram.CPP’s integrate classroom theory with practicalexperience in theworkplace by linking the resources ofsecondaryschools,business,industryandthecommunityto provide young people with a highly motivatingeducational experience. Through contact with skilledemployees, students develop an awareness of theattitudes and responsibilities (employability skills)necessary for success in the workplace.
