MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION IN New York City Public Schools
• The new math programs ensure that all students learn the core math skills and higher level concepts they will need to go on to college or to find good jobs in today’s market.
• These math programs are based on New York State achievement standards.
The math programs will:
• Provide students with a strong foundation in basic math skills.
• Help students learn to solve complex math problems.
• Apply math concepts to situations they face in their daily lives.
The school day
• Students in grades K-2 will spend at least one hour each day on math.
• Students in grades 3-8 will spend at least 75 minutes each day on math.
• There will also be special take-home materials for you to make it easier to help your children with their math homework.

• IMPACT Mathematics text book
• Hot Words, Hot Topics reference book
• Skills Intervention for Middle School Mathematics student workbook
A Look at IMPACT MATHEMATICS
• Each multiday lesson begins with a full-class discussion, activity, or problem designed to introduce the mathematics and help set a context for learning.
• Explore activities and Think and Discuss questions are provided.

examples, direct modeling through cartoons, and interactive problem sets.
• Students may work independently or in small collaborative groups.
