    Mathematics Assessment (CfE) - Level 2

    (MTH 2 - 13a)Having explored more complex number sequences, including well-known named number patterns, I can explain the rule used to generate the sequence, and apply it to extend the pattern.

    1. Write down the next two numbers in these sequences :-

    a 3, 8, 13, 18, ...... b 8000, 4000, 2000, ......

    c 26, 28, 32, 38, ...... d 1, 4, 5, 9, 14, ......

    2 a Write down all the square numbers between 40 and 90.

    b What is the fifth triangular number ?

    3. Look at the cost of buying calculators for a maths class.

    a Copy and complete the table to show the cost of buying calculators.

    b The total cost is how many times the number of calculators ?

    c Write a formula connecting T and C using symbols.

    d Use your formula to find the cost of 30 calculators.

    4. For each of these tables, determine a formula connecting the pairs of letters :-

    a

    b

    1 calculatorcost = £7

    2 calculatorscost = £14

    3 calculatorscost = £ ?

    4 calculatorscost = £ ?

    No. of Calcs (C) 1 2 3 4 5 10

    Total cost (T) 7

    No. of Pounds (P) 1 2 3 4 5 6

    No. of Euros (E) ? 2·3 3·45 4·6 ? ?E = ........

    No. of muffins (M) 1 2 3 4 5 6

    Grams of flour (G) 120 240 360 ? ? ?G = ........

    5. In a school dining room, wooden benches are placed around the dining tables.

    Here is what the dining area looks like when two tables and three tables are set up.

    a Draw a sketch to show how benches would be arranged around a line of 4 tables.

    b Copy and complete the table to show how many tables go with the benches.

    c Write down a formula for finding the number of benches required when you know how many tables there are.

    B = ? x T + ?

    d Use your formula to find how many benches are needed for 20 tables.

    6. Shown below are two tables of values connecting pairs of letters.

    Write down a formula or rule connecting the second letter in the table to the first letter.

    a b

    7. A rule for finding the number of boards (B) required when you know the number of fence posts (P) is .....

    a If there are 50 fence posts, how many boards will be required ?

    b If there are 56 boards, how many fence posts will be required ?

    B = 4P – 4
