    PUZZLING

During the next two weekswe will be solving and discussing multiplication puzzles.

    WHY?

Multiplication is a necessary skill to solve real-life situations.

Being able to express your thinking in mathematics is extremelyimportant because it is how you build off one anothers ideas

    and how you learn.

Simply being able to do a problem does not show that you are a

master at it. Instead, being able to explain and show someone

else how to do it does.

    In an hour

You will have been able to apply the discussion skills of

Reply, Reason, and Reflect by discussing, as a class, a

puzzle problem that you have solved with their partnerpair. You will use prompt discussion starter cards to

engage in a full class discussion where you will

verbally share your ideas, ask questions,

    and make comparisons.

    WHY?

    WHY?

    WHY?

Some of you need time to finish working on your problem, use this time to do

so. If you are already finished, it is important to review concepts you already

learned or just recently learned to help make connections between old and

    new information.

We get better in our own puzzling skills when we look at how other

people solved the problem and compared it to how we solved it.

Knowing and being able to use the different ways to respondrespectfully in conversation is the next step in being able to have a

    successful discussion.

WHY? Discussing helps us build our own knowledge and understanding.

    PARTNER PUZZLE PROBLEM

Playing Stop the Clock is a lot of fun but the hostwants to add a new element to the game. He was

thinking of adding points for every correct answer.

If each question is worth 15 points and your team

answered 13 questions correctly, how many total

points would he have to give your team?
