Objectives

• This course prepares students to make practical applications of mathematical concepts. This program also aligns with entrance requirements for many trades and apprenticeship programs.

• Students will develop their number sense, algebraic reasoning, spatial sense, and critical thinking skills by emphasizing the use of math in everyday life.

Calculator Policy

• Calculators must be approved by Alberta Education

• as per rules set out by Alberta Education:

• calculators will be cleared by your teacher before any examination

• cases must be placed at the front of the classroom

• password protection must be removed

• see the online document for calculator restrictions (updated annually)

• NOTE: mobile devices may NOT be used as a calculator for examinations

Classroom Expectations

• Please come to class on time and prepared to work. At the very least you should have something to write on and something to write with.

• Punctuality and participation are key components to achieving success in this course.

• Students are expected to be attentive and focused on learning during class. If a student is not on task or disrupting others they will be asked to leave the classroom so as not to interfere with the learning environment.

• Appropriate use of technology and personal electronic devices to enhance learning in the classroom is strongly encourage, however, devices that are being misused or disruptive during class time will be confiscated and returned to the individual at the teacher’s discretion.

• All assignments and tests are to be completed and handed in on the assigned date at the beginning of class, unless otherwise specified. Extensions may be given under extenuating circumstances, which must be discussed with the teacher prior to the specified due date.

• If students are absent on the day the assignment is due, it is to be completed and submitted the day that they return to school.

• Late assignments will only be accepted when accompanied by a written, reasonable justification and will receive a 10% deduction for every day late, until the day that they are corrected, after which the assignment will receive a grade of ZERO.

• Late assignments without a written, reasonable justification will receive a grade of ZERO.

• If a student misses a test, it will be written on the day they return to school, up to the day when the test is corrected, at which point the test will be given a grade of ZERO. The student must make arrangements to write the test during their time.

• If students miss a class it is their responsibility to get the homework, notes, and assignments from another student in the class.

• If you do not understand, please ask questions. HELP IS AVAILABLE. Arrangements can be made for extra help upon request by the student; all you have to do is ask!!

Academic Integrity

• Students, parents, and teachers value the pursuit of knowledge in an honest and challenging manner. Cooperative work between students is, at times, encouraged but it is expected that in the process uniqueness of work will remain evident. Unless there is a group project, students are held accountable to work individually, and are expected to submit individual pieces of work that represent their unique skills, processes, and thoughts.

• Academic misconduct is a serious offence. Students found plagiarizing or cheating on any work will receive academic penalties that may include, but are not limited to, redoing the task, a grade reduction, or receiving a grade of ZERO and further disciplinary actions may be pursued.
