Purpose of this course: This course is comparable to the second year of high school algebra (excluding trigonometry). It provides a foundation for further study of mathematics required for a variety of majors including Business and Social Sciences. For Business and Social Science majors, this course is a prerequisite for Math 8, 9, and 10. Oce Hours: By appointment. Textbook: Bittinger, Ellenbogen, Johnson Intermediate Algebra, 9th Edition , Pearson 2014. Please bring to every class. Student Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete Math 253 will be able to: 1. Demonstrate mastery of the computational skills necessary for them to succeed in a transfer-level math class. 2. Demonstrate the critical thinking skills necessary to set up and solve word problems at the appropriate diculty level. 3. Demonstrate proficiency in graphing. Course Structure: This is a 5 unit course which requires 5 hours of lecture and about 10 hours of home- work per week. You should expect to spend about 15 hours per week on this course. Grading: Students will be graded according to a traditional grading scale or Pass/No-Pass. Regular tests will account for 70% of the student’s grade. You will be allowed to drop one exam (Not the Final). Therefore, make-ups will not be allowed! The final exam for this class is on Wednesday, May 18th, 2016 @ 7:30 pm. The final exam is worth 15% of the grade and will cover chapters 1 - 11. No make-ups! Daily assignments and participation comprise the remaining 15%. All students who have been authorized for academic adjustments/accommodations for examinations should submit the proper forms within the first two weeks of the course. Attendance: Regular attendance is essential. All students are expected to attend each class meeting. If you miss class for any reason, you are responsible for getting the class notes. There is no make-up for missed in-class assignments, so please make plans to attend class for the entire session. A student may be dropped due to excessive absences. Arriving to class late, or leaving class early will be counted toward your total

Cell Phones: Please turn o↵ all electronic devices when you enter this classroom.

Calculator: You are encouraged to obtain a basic scientific calculator. Graphing calculators and cell-phones will not be allowed as a substitute. I highly recommend the TI-36X Pro.

Learning Resource Center: Students are STRONGLY encouraged to use the Mathematics Tutorial Cen-ter, located in LRC 212.

As long as you register for drop in tutoring, you can get a printout of your tutoring hours at the end of thesemester. This printout will be worth extra credit on the final exam. Register on MySite for Ticket #15335or #15340. Tutoring 300 is a zero unit class, so it is free.

The center provides tutoring as a drop in service or by appointment. Students can go to the Center anytime it is open. To earn extra credit for tutoring you must have enrolled for TU300.
