COURSE DESCRIPTION AND RATIONALE

MATH 1314 COLLEGE ALGEBRA (3-3-0). This course is designed for students majoring in business, mathematics, science, engineering, or certain engineering-related technical fields. Content includes the rational, real, and complex number systems; the study of functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and related equations; inequalities; and systems of linear equations and determinants. This section of College Algebra is taught in the classroom primarily as a lecture/discussion course. It is designed to teach students the functional approach to mathematical relationships that they will need for a business calculus sequence. Other courses, such as MATH 1332, or MATH 1342 are more appropriate to meet a general mathematics requirement. Check with your degree plan as to what math course your college requires.

Additional information about ACC's mathematics curriculum and faculty is available on the Internet at http://www.austincc.edu/math/

COMMON COURSE OBJECTIVES

Course objectives are attached and can also be found at: http://www.austincc.edu/mthdept2/tfcourses/obj1314.htm

COURSE PREREQUISITE

Intermediate Algebra (MATD 0390) or current knowledge of high school algebra as measured by the ACC Assessment Test. Students who have a great deal of difficulty with the Pretest and/or review and have not had Intermediate Algebra or its equivalent recently should consider withdrawing and taking Intermediate Algebra.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE AND TEXT

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This class will require the use of MyMathLab software for homework assignments. When purchasing your textbook and materials for this class, please be sure to purchase something that includes MyMathLab. Here are some options:

A new book purchased from an ACC bookstore includes a MyMathLab access code. Some other booksellers may have books that include a MyMathLab access code. Please make sure it is included before

you purchase a book from another bookstore. You may instead choose to purchase MyMathLab access as a stand-alone product. This software includes access to an

electronic form of the textbook, but does not include a physical book. Access codes can be purchased from an ACC bookstore or online when registering. The cost is around $80. Access codes cannot be sold back to the bookstore or transferred to another student. You may purchase access to MyMathLab online from AddisonWesley for about $80.00 at: www.mymathlab.com/buying.html

Most used textbooks do not include valid MyMathLab access codes. You may purchase them separately. However, a used book and MyMathLab purchased separately usually costs more than a new book bundled with MyMathLab.

For more information, refer to the handout Information about MyMathLab

TEXT: College Algebra with Modeling and Visualization by Gary Rockswold, 4th ed., ISBN 0-32154230-4 Text bundled with MyMathLab: Hard copy ISBN 0-32-157704-3, Loose Leaf ISBN 0-32-166511-2

Before you buy your text, you can access the first two chapters from the textbook online at http://www.austincc.edu/mthdept2/text/ The password is acc1314.

CALCULATORS

Students need either a scientific or business calculator. (Has log or ln key.) If a student cannot purchase one, calculators are available from the LRS. Graphing calculators are not required, but you will use graphing technology in most sections of the book. Graphing calculators are also available in the LRS. Most ACC faculty are familiar with the TI family of graphing calculators. Hence, TI calculators are highly recommended for student use. Other calculator brands can also be used.

Incomplete grades (I) are given only in very rare circumstances. Generally, to qualify for an "I", a student must have completed almost all exams and assignments, have a passing grade, and have a serious situation or personal tragedy occur after the last day to withdraw that prevents course completion.

TESTS You will have 4 regular tests. The 4 tests will be placed in the South Austin Testing Center on the dates announced and must be completed by the stated deadline. NO MAKEUP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN. Please make sure you understand the testing center hours and procedures. For testing center information, please refer to the testing center handout, visit the testing center, or look on the web at http://www.austincc.edu/testctr.

The final exam is comprehensive and will be given in class on the last day of class (Wednesday, Dec 8, 2010).

HOMEWORK AND QUIZZES Online homework in MyMathLab will be assigned every class period and will be due at 11:45 am on the following Monday. Please note that the software will not allow access after the deadline. Other written homework will be collected at the beginning of class on the announced due date. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON. In addition to the assigned homework, you should work additional problems from your text, as needed, to ensure your understanding of the material. You are responsible for checking your answers and asking for help with problems that give you trouble. Due to the nature of this course, I will not be able to answer homework questions in class. I will be more than happy to answer questions during office hours or you may make an appointment to meet with me. In addition, the learning labs located on each campus offer free walk-in tutoring.

On some days, you may have announced or unannounced quizzes. You must attend class to take the quizzes. NO MAKEUP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.

If you are absent from class, you may have someone bring your written homework or take-home quiz to class or put it in my mailbox by the time the class period starts

You must show your work on all written tests, homework, and quizzes in order to receive credit.

ATTENDANCE Attendance is required in this course. Students who miss more than four (4) classes may be withdrawn.

WITHDRAWALS It is the student's responsibility to initiate all withdrawals in this course. I may withdraw students for excessive absences (4) but I make no commitment to do this unless required by law or college policy to do so. If you are absent for four (4) or more class periods, you should consider withdrawing from the class. If for any reason, you can no longer attend this class, please make sure you officially withdraw from the class. If you stop attending class, but do not officially withdraw before the deadline, you will receive an F in the

class. The last day to withdraw from any 16-week course this semester is November 18, 2010. After this date, neither the student nor the instructor may initiate a withdrawal.

Reinstatement policy: Students who withdraw or are withdrawn generally will not be reinstated unless they have completed all course work, projects, and tests necessary to place them at the same level of course completion as the rest of the class. After the last day to withdraw, neither the instructor nor the student may initiate reinstatement into the course.

ACC RESOURCES AND SERVICES Lab Classes: Sections of MATH 0153(1-0-2) are sometimes offered. This lab class is designed for students currently registered in COLLEGE Algebra, MATH 1314. It offers individualized and group setting to provide additional practice and explanation. This course is not for college-level credit. Repeatable up to two credit hours. Students should check the course schedule for possible offerings of the lab class.

Learning Labs: ACC main campuses have Learning Labs, which offer free first-come, first-serve tutoring in mathematics courses. The locations, contact information and hours of availability of the Learning Labs are posted at: http://www.austincc.edu/tutor

DVDs: There is a set of video DVDs keyed to the text by section in the Learning Resource Center of each campus. Students who miss class or who need extra review may find these useful. Also, with the bundled text with MyMathLab is a set of video tutorials.

STUDENT SERVICES The web address for student services is: http://www.austincc.edu/support The ACC student handbook can be found at: http://www.austincc.edu/handbook

MISCELLANEOUS

Time: You cannot learn mathematics by listening to someone talk about it. You learn math by thinking about and working on mathematical problems. This takes time. Allow yourself three hours of study for each hour you are in class.

Cell Phone policy: In order to enhance learning, please keep cell phones in a silent mode during class. If you must answer an emergency call, please leave the classroom quietly prior to answering.
