Module overview This module forms part of the MSc Advanced Practice (Midwifery). It is a core module and contributes to your programme of study by providing a contemporary review of leadership within the midwifery profession and evaluating how this contributes to the development of maternity services. The module provides an opportunity for you to investigate how leadership approaches influence the development, implementation and evaluation of research, policy and practice in maternity care.

The module can also be taken as a freestanding module. There is also provision for midwifery practitioners who have been previous appointed Supervisors of Midwives (SOMs) to attend a ‘nested’ shortened programme over 4 days to support the role of Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA). A separate module handbook and e-learning platform is available for colleagues accessing this provision.

Module aim Current maternity service policies state a commitment to high quality, woman-centred care and indicate a need for strong midwifery leadership. This module aims to support the development of these leaders.

Learning outcomes It is intended that this module will enable you to:

1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the organisation of maternity care.

2. Critically evaluate the leadership and management skills required to ensure the delivery of high quality midwifery services, including an understanding of leadership and change management theories and how they could be utilized to advance the care of maternity service users.

3. Critically evaluate the evidence base of midwifery and obstetric practice.

4. Demonstrate advanced reflective understanding of maternity policy creation and implementation.

5. Understand professional initiatives to support continuous improvement processes that build personal and professional resilience, enhance quality of care and support preparedness for appraisal and professional revalidation

Teaching and learning arrangements This module will draw on your experience of clinical practice and the evidence used to support professional initiatives. Teaching and learning approaches embrace interactive discussion and reflection and this will be encouraged through peer discussion, student-led seminars, tutorials, self-directed study and keynote lectures. Learning resources to complement sessional topics are available on the KEATS module learning platform and these resources will be added to as material becomes available.

Submitting coursework For those enrolled on the module as a core or free-standing unit of study the module is assessed by 3,500 word essay.

Assessment criteria The assessment criteria are outlined in the module assessment rubric available on KEATS. This rubric incorporates generic College assessment criteria for post graduate study and is a useful formative self-assessment tool in the preparation of your work.

Formative assessment To develop your insights in maternity service leadership and delivery you are required to undertake a peer and lecturer reviewed formative case study presentation on the 14/6/18. Your 30-minute presentation will explore issues of leadership and change management around a specific aspect of practice and will include opportunities for you to lead a discussion on the key issues identified.

Summative assessment The summative assignment requires you to produce an essay of 3.500 words. Your assignment is intended to build on your formative presentation and you are encouraged to consolidate your critical evaluation on issues of leadership and change management around a specific aspect of practice. Your work is expected to demonstrate a critical awareness and advanced critical understanding of your chosen area of interest. In order to demonstrate this, you will be expected to access a range of evidence to support your discussion and this may include professional standards, policies, clinical guidance, primary and secondary research. The presentation of material in a logical and systematic format is a useful strategy in academic presentation and the following structure may enable you to consider choices in this regard: Cover sheet

Make sure it is appropriate to the module

Includes a plagiarism disclaimer

Includes a total word count Introduction

Provide an overview of the structure of the essay

Identify the topic under review – provide a rationale

Contextualise the issues under review – Why is it important? Who is involved? How does it link to policy and/or professional priorities?

How does the topic link to international, national and/or local care priorities?

You may wish to present material in a reflective format – justify the benefits of this approach

You may wish to present material using an identified framework – a policy analysis or improvement framework so justify the benefits of this approach

Acknowledge ethical principles – e.g. NMC Code (2015) Main body

Apply theories and models of leadership and change management to the issue

Make links to demonstrate critical awareness of the political and social context of maternity service provision

Use a range of perspectives to critically explore the topic under review – what does it raise for women, midwives, the multi-professional team, policy makers, researchers?

Use a range of sources to critically evaluate policy, professional standards, clinical guidance, improvement/standard setting and research literature

What issues of quality are raised and

Identify gaps in the evidence base

Conclusion

Summarise the main points of the discussion

Return to issues raised in the introduction – e.g. what are the international, national and/or local care priorities and how has the critical discussion forwarded the debate?

Identify any recommendations and the feasibility in implementation and evaluation

Comment on personal insights and future development of specific objectives related to leadership role
