TESTING SERVICESChemical Analysis

Environmental Analysis

Organic & Inorganic MaterialsCMTL uses state-of-the-art instrumentation to analyze both ferrous and non-ferrous matrices for chemical composition. We employ highly developed digestion methods so that steels, specialty steels and weld consumables can be accurately analyzed. CMTL analyses organic materials such as Resins, Stabilizers, Plasticizers, Flame Retardants, Reinforcing Fibers, and Pigments for quality control purposes and to identify polymers and additives.

Metallic sample preparation is achieved by physically milling or drilling the submitted material to collect homogenous specimens. Non-standard preparation such as annealing

or coating removal is also available. Metals are analyzed for conformance to product specification against traceable purchased standards used to verify every analysis performed. The material type/grade can be verified and unknown materials identified by our experienced staff. Other services typically include reverse engineering, Certified Materials Test Report (CMTR) data generation.

Plastics and resin materials are tested by microscopic characterization and using a combination of the following instrumentation to satisfy worldwide specifications.

• Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometry

Weld Qualification

Consumer Products and Toy Testing

Historically welding procedures and welder performance testing were solely based upon the results of mechanical testing of the submitted mock weld coupons. Today the regulatory inspection has been expanded to encompass testing required not only for ASME IX, ASME VIII, CSA W47.1, CSA W47.2, AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2, AWS D1.6 but also by newer codes of construction including:

• ASME Section III Subsections NB, NC, ND, NF

• Oil Field Corporate Specifications

• Offshore OIL Corporate Specifications

• European welding code as governed by the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC)

Each of these standards has influenced the way industry performs qualifications and new testing programs have been developed by CMTL to keep pace. The qualification of weld procedures, equipment, and personnel now requires the services of all departments within CMTL including but not limited to:

• Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, bend testing and impact notch toughness

• Chemical analysis of the weld alloy and heat affected zones (HAZ)

• Metallurgical requirements for volume percent ferrite, intermetallics and defects

• Macroscopic examination for fusion, weld size, defects, and reinforcement

• Micro hardness criteria testing of the weld and (HAZ)

• Corrosion resistance of austenitic and duplex stainless steels

CMTL’s operations include a fully equipped product development laboratory providing a range of analytical testing supports for many clients, working with all types of consumer goods protocols.

Our product development testing division, staffed with experienced technical professionals are increasingly challenged to analyze a diverse range of consumer products. Product development encompasses many areas of everyday life, from composite building materials to child resistant closures, toys, jewellery, household products and more. In order to minimize exposure of known harmful chemicals toxic substances are prohibited or restricted to limited amounts based on known toxicity parameters. Accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) our company is helping to ensure the safety of children’s toys and many other consumer products.

Children’s ProductsAmong CMTL’s primary concern is public safety and in particular the regulations involving children. The Hazardous Products (Toys) Regulations require that excessively toxic, corrosive or irritant substances and sensitizers are not permitted for use in toys and other children’s products. Under the Surface Coating Materials Regulations of the Hazardous Products Act, surface coating materials must not contain more than the specified limits for total lead, mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals. These limits effectively eliminate the intentional addition of heavy metals in surface coating materials, and serve to protect children from toxicity associated with lead and mercury exposure. Regulated substances also includes substances such as Phthalates used to soften plastics and vinyl’s that have proven to be a health risk, and Bisphenol A (BPA) which is now restricted from infant bottles and other consumer goods.

Packaging and Medical PlasticsCMTL provides an array of services to the Packaging and Medical Plastic Industries using state-of-the-art instrumentation and highly experienced personnel. For many years CMTL has conducted field studies involving the public for the purposes of product screening and packaging development. This data is used by the industry to improve design and increase overall safety. In our laboratory we conduct reliable analytical, physical, mechanical and environmental testing identified below for compliance to consumer standards.

Containers / Packaging:• Closure Integrity Testing

• Leachable and Extractable Chemical Analysis

• Environmental Aging

• Durability Testing

• Compositional Analysis

• Thermal Properties
