COUGS MOVE ON TO THE NCAA SECOND ROUNDFor the fourth time the Cougs are on to the NCAA Second Round after upsetting #8 and 2-seed UCF, 1-0, on the road Saturday night...the postseason win was the Cougs’ first since 2009 when WSU defeated Villanova, 1-0...the Cougs moved on to the second round in 2011 on PKs after a 1-1 draw with Kentucky...WSU is looking to move on to the third round for the first time in program history...the Cougs returned to the postseason for the eighth time in the last 10 years and the third time in the last four...WSU sports a 3-8-3 record in the NCAA tournament.

VS TENNESSEEThe Cougs and the Vols meet for the first time since 2005 in a game WSU won in comback fashion in overtime, 3-2, in Knoxsville...in two matchups, the two sides have needed extra time in each contest, drawing in 2ot, 0-0, in 2004, before the Cougs win in 2005...the current Cougs and Vols were playing youth soccer the last time the two sides met.

LAST TIME OUT: COUGS UPSET 2-SEED UCFIn one of the gutsiest defensive performances in Washington State history, the Cougs (10-7-3) took down the No. 8 and two-seeded Central Florida Knights (13-2-3), 1-0, Saturday night in the first round of NCAA Championships...The Cougs advanced thanks to the efforts of keeper Ella Dederick and her defensive mates as WSU handed the Knights just their second loss of the season while picking up the Cougs’ 11th shutout of the year...Standing on her head throughout the night, Dederick came up with six crucial saves while the backline added three more stops on the line...On the other end, it was the Knights vaunted defense that suffered a fatal blow when an intended clearance on a Cougar cross was inadvertently headed into the home net in just the fifth minute of play.

KEEPING IT CLEAN ON THE SCORE SHEETThe Cougs enter the game with 11 shutouts on the year, ranking tied 2nd all-time in WSU history...on the year, the Cougs rank 20th among all teams in Divsion I soccer...of the 11 shutouts, the Cougs have shutout five top-25 teams and two top-10 teams.

WAZZU IN THE REGULAR SEASONThe Cougs finished the regular season 9-7-3 overall including a big win over No. 2 UCLA, 1-0, on Oct. 19 that handed the Bruins their first loss of the season...The Bruins earned a No. 2 national-seed in the tournament, one of the seven Pac-12 teams to be included in the 2017 tournament field...WSU ended the conference season in 7th place after posting a 4-6-1 record against the nation’s best rivals...While the Cougs shutout the Bruins, they also shutout nine other opponents as one of the top defensive teams in the country...WSU and redshirt-junior keeper, Ella Dederick, came up with 10 clean sheets on the year ranking 12th in the nation.

THREE COUGS EARN ALL-PAC-12 HONORSThree Cougs earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors as announced by conference commissioner Larry Scott office Tuesday afternoon...Ella Dederick and Morgan Weaver were named to the third team while Elyse Bennett was awarded all-freshman team honors. Dederick - The captain of the Cougs’ defense, Dederick led the way to 10 shutouts on the year, a mark which ranked the redshirt-junior 12th in all of Division I. Her 10 shutouts in the regular season placed her second all-time in WSU single-season annals.Weaver - The University Place native finished the regular season as the Cougs’ top scorer as she netted six goals including four game-winners. Her four game-winning strikes ranked second in the Pac-12 with her biggest coming against then No. 14 Nebraska in a 1-0 shutout on Sept. 1.Bennett - After knocking on the scoring door throughout much of the year, Bennett broke through for her first collegiate goal against then No. 6 USC on Oct. 22. She would add her first game-winner four days later at Arizona State, heading home a cross from Weaver. The two would also hook up for the game-winner at Oregon on Oct. 5 when Bennett found Weaver after the pair broke through the Ducks’ defense.

UPSET FOR THE RECORD BOOKSLast week the Cougs posted a win for the ages as WSU upset #2 UCLA, 1-0, at home at Lower Soccer Field...the win tied for the biggest upset in program history after beating #2 Washington, 1-0 (2OT) on Nov. 3, 2000...The win marked the Cougs ninth win against a top-10 opponent all-time while improving WSU’s record to 3-2-1 against the top-25 in 2017 including four shutouts.

WEAVER LEADING THE WAYAs she did last season as a freshmen, sophomore sensation Morgan Weaver finshed the regular season tied for the team lead in points with 14 while adding a team-best six goals...She finished second in the Pac-12 in game-winning goals with four...additionally, the scorer added a pair of assists including the game-winning pass to Elyse Bennett at Oregon.

HARO HONING HER OFFENSE FROM THE BACKDespite moving to the backline in 2017 as a wide defender, junior Maddy Haro finished the regular season tied for the team lead with 14 points while dishing out a team-best six assists...her six helpers tied for eighth most in the Pac-12...she scored four goals as well including two from the penalty spot as she netted one of just two goals scored against #1 Stanford in Pac-12 play.

FRESHMEN MAKE AN IMPRESSIONA youth movement is afoot at WSU with the freshmen making their presence felt...WSU routinely starts at least three freshmen each game with at least six seeing major time together on the field...In all, six freshmen have scored on the year with Elyse Bennett and Brianna Alger each netting a pair of goals...Makamae Gomera-Stevens and Aaqila McLyn led the way with two assists each...additionally, they have had their “hands” in 13 of the 23 goals.

AIR O’NEILL TAKING OFF AGAINST THE TOP-25Entering the season without a goal, junior midfielder Maegan O’Neill has come up with three goals on the year, third most on the team...O’Neill has scored all three goals at home and all three off of corners...Her first two goals came against #24 Utah...she added her second game-winner against #2 UCLA, tapping home a loose ball off the corner... O’Neill’s goal at 3:50 marked the fastest goal scored for the Cougars in 2017.

HANCOCK PROVES TO BE THE ROCK OF THE DEFENSIVE WALLThe leader of the defensive backline, junior Grace Hancock proved helped guide the Cougs to 10 shutouts on the year, third most in single-season WSU history...the third-year center back started all 19 games for the Cougs while playing all but six minutes on the season (1786 min)...she missed just six minutes due to injury after throwing her body in front of a shot at Arizona, however, she would return to the field almost immediately...she played the most minutes of anyone in a Coug uniform outside of goal...in addition to defense, she added one goal on the year.

DEDERICK CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKWith just seven shutouts through her first two seasons, redshirt-junior Ella Dederick more than doubled that mark this season and has laid claim to being one of the best keepers in the country...Entering the game, she has posted 11 clean sheets (five against the top-25) 6th most in the country in 2017...Her 11 shutouts ranks second in WSU single season history... She now has 18 in her career, T3rd most in WSU history...in addition to the shutouts, Dederick’s 32 career wins ranks second all-time in WSU history.

WINNERS FOR WEAVERThe Cougs’ leading scorer in each of her first two seasons, sophomore Morgan Weaver has produced 14 career goals heading into the NCAA Second Round..Making the most of her goals, Weaver has come up with seven game-winners, scoring the winner with half of her strikes...her seven game-winners ranks tied for fifth all-time in WSU records just half way through her Cougar career.

SENIORS SAY GOODBYESunday marked the Cougs final home game for the regular season and with it the final home games for their four seniors...the Cougs will graduate Sofia Anker-Kofoed, Jordan Branch, Kelsee Crenshaw, and Chelsea Harkins...together the four have been part of 42 victories including a program record 14 wins in 2015 as well as three NCAA Tournament berths in their four seasons.

HARO NAMED PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKFor the first time in her career, junior Maddy Haro captured Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week recognition on Sept. 5...Haro led the Cougs to a pair of shutouts including a 1-0 win over then-unbeaten #14 Nebraska...she also tallied a pair of assists in the Cougs 5-0 win over Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon.

DEDERICK NAMED PAC-12 GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEKJust one week into the new year Cougars’ goalkeeper, redshirt-junior Ella Dederick, has been recognized for her play on the field as the WSU captain took home the first Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week award as announced by the conference office Aug. 22...The weekly award was the second career award for Dederick who also won the award as a freshman...Facing off against the reigning Big 10 champions, Dederick not only stymied the opposition’s attack for 90 minutes of regulation, but tacked on an extra 20 minutes of overtime action for good measure...In all, Dederick faced 14 shots while making three saves to post her first shutout of the season and eighth of her career.

WSU EXTENDS UNBEATEN STREAK AGAINST HUSKIESWith a 0-0 draw in the 2017 regular season finale, WSU extended its unbeaten streak against Washington to 14 games...in that span, which began with a 3-2 victory in 2004, the Cougars have outscored the Huskies by a total of 18-7, going 8-0-5...in the most recent meeting, the two teams battled to a draw in Seattle as neither offense could crack the scoring code in 110 minutes of action.

WASHINGTON STATE HEAD COACH TODD SHULENBERGERCougar Head Coach Todd Shulenberger is in his third year at Washington State…In 2015 Shulenberger became the seventh head coach in program history after spending the previous two seasons as the associate head coach at Texas Tech…he led the Cougs to a record 14 wins in 2015...In three seasons at the helm, Shulenberger has led the Cougs into the postseason twice including picking up WSU’s first tournament win since 2009 this year.
