The sun may be clouded, yet ever the sun

VVill sweep on its course till the cycle is run.

And w he n i uto chaos the systems are luu ied,

Again sl ial l the Builder reshape a new world.

Your path may be clouded, uncertain yourgoal ;

Move on, for the orbit is fixed for your soul.

And though i t may lead into darkness of night,

The torch of the Builder shall give it new light.

Yon were, and you will be; know this while you are:

Your spirit has traveled both long and afar.

It carne from the Source, to the Source it returns;

The spark that was l ighted eternally burns.

From b ody to body you r spiri t speeds on;

It sceks a new form, when the oíd one is gone;

And the form that i t finds, is the fabric we wrought

On the loom of the mind, vvith the fibre of thought.

From cycle to cycle, through t ime and through space,

Your lives with your longings will ever keep pace.

And all that you ask for, and all you desire,

M ust com e at yo ur bidd ing, as fia mes ou t of fire.

You are you r own devil , you are your ow n

You fashioned the paths that you r footsteps have

And no one can save you from error or sin

Until you shall h ark to the spiri t within. — From the poem, T H E LA W .

J f e we lcome yon and thank you fo r your in te res t in

leam ing inore about rhe Rosicrucian Order, AM OR C.

Your reading of this hoo klet indicares th ar you have

felt an urge from within, a special something that drew you to the

Rosicrucian Order. Perhaps you have already explored the vast

sea of metaphysical and self-help books, programs, lectures, and

seminars , and you may have found yourself wo ndering how to

make sense of it all—how to put it all together in a vvay that is

pra cti cal and truly relevant to you.

You can acquire a lot of infon na tion from books, lectures, and

classes, and you may even discover some very useful techniques

for improving certain aspects ot your lite. But this approach to

self-improvement is always incomplete, because most books,

seminars, and study groups have a limited focus, such as personal

prosperity, im pro ving rela tionsh ips, m editation, sp iritual atrune-

ment, or developing psychic abilities. And focusing on one area

of study doesn't provide balanced development. The Rosicrucian

system is uniquc — it prov ides a fo undation th at fies to geth er all oí  the different aspects of metaphysical study, and demonstrates their

interc onn ected ness. To our knowledge, it’s the only system th at

does this. U nderstand ing the natural laws tha t govem all realms—

physica l, m enta l, em otional, psychic, and sp ir itual— leads to true

prosperity and pe ace of min d. T his is exact ly what th e Rosicrucian

Ord er provides— a systematic approa ch to th e study of higher

wisdom that empowers you to find the answers to your questions

about the workings of rhe universe, the interconnectedness of all

lite, your higher purpose, and how it all tits together.

If you’ve already spent many years studying metaphysics,

you '11 find th at the R osicrucian system organizes this inform ation

in a comprehensive way and acts as a unique catalyst of skills and

accomplishment. The knowledge you’ve already acquired attains

Page 8: Mastery of Life (2005).pdf

a higher dimensión of meaning when you can place it in the

co nte xt of a powerful whole. Further, this knowled ge also translates

into increasingly focused, skillful actio n an d at tain m en t in life.

If you’re completely new to this area of study, you’ll find that

this comprehensive approach makes your leaming easy. As you

progress step -by-step th ro ugh th e Rosicrucian course of study,

you’ll see how each subject relates to all the rest, giving you a senseof completeness and confidence in your understanding.

Through simple weekly lessons that you study at home, you’ll

have the opportunity to learn useful techniques which you can

use on a daily basis to awaken your higher faculties, leading to

improved health, better life situations, more harmonious personal

relationships, and an increased sense of happiness and peace. You

can achieve these goals through a process which Rosicrucian

students cali selfmastcry.

W ha t exactly does self-mastery m ea n? It means lea m ing how

to chart your own course through life. How to find rhe means

to make the right choices and decisions. I t means seeing your

p resen t cir cum sta nces as unlim it ed opportun iti es fo r gro w th ,

because you do have th e abil ity to change your sit uation . It

means being able to take charge of your life and help tho se

around you to achieve a happier and a healthier existence.

The Rosicrucian teachings are not based on the ideas of any

one individual. Unlike many New Age movem ents, the Rosicrucian philosophy has be en deve loped over centuries from th e co m bined

efforts of many great minds. Ancient truths are incorporated into

practica l time-tested tech niques w hic h you can begin to use im-

mediately. The lessons are structured in a sequential system to pro-

vide safe, gradual development of your natural psychic and spiritual

abilities. This is a school of practical mysticism, which encourages

you to be open-minded, questioning, and to test the valué of the

pr incipies you are leam ing by active ly us ing them in your daily life.

Is the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC,a Religión?

 No. A M O R C , w hic h sta nds for  Ancie nt and Mystical Order

Rosae Crucis , is not a religión and does not require a specific

code of belief or conduct. Rosicrucian students come from

a variety of cultura l and religious backgrounds. Becoming a

Rosicrucian student does not in any way require you to leave

your church, join a church, or change your religious beliefs.

Some Rosicrucian members do not subscribe to any specificreligious beliefs at all. For students who do, we encouragc

them to particípate in the religión of their choice. As a result,

Rosicrucian students come from every religious denomination,

and rhrough our teachings, many find a greater appreciation of

the mystical principies underlying th eir individual religious and

philosophical beliefs. Those w ho do not belong to any part icula r

religión often discover a sense of connection with a higher

intelligence that was missing in their lives before.

The Rosicrucian path incorporates both metaphysics and

mysticism. Metaphysics is that which falls beyond the five physical senses; for exam ple , in tu iti o n , v is ualization, and heal-

ing techniques. Mysticism is simply the process by which you

may eventual ly experience direct , conscious unión with the

Absolute, Divine Mind, Universal Intel l igence, or what some

Rosicrucian students cali the God of their Hearts. This is not

done by adhering to specific tenets or beliefs, but by leaming

and applying natural laws which, over t ime, allow you to

exper ience D ivine or Cosmic C onsciousness . The Ros icrucian

Order does not a t tempt to def ine the nature of the dei ty .

R ather, you wil l rem ain t ree to discover this throu gh yo ur own

reflect ions. This same approach appl ies to everything that is

p resen te d th ro u g h th e R osic rucian te ach in gs.

We d on ’t expect you to accept an ything on faith. We w ant you

to thin k for yourself, to learn how to draw upon the h igher knowl-

edge already w ithin you. W ha t we provide are simply the tools to

enable you to accomplish this. The Rosicrucian teachings contain

pra ctical ex ercises and experim ents tha t allow you to dem ónstrate

for yourself the principies presented in the lessons and to accessyour own source of inner wisdom and guidance. As you do this,

you’ll begin developing natural abilities that may have been left

do rm ant th roug hou t your life. Almost immediately you’ll begin to

see your life in a d ifferen t light.

How Is the Organization Structured? The Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, is a non-profit, educational

charitable organization which is classified by the United States

Intem al Rev enue Service und er section 501 (c )(3). Its activitiesan d services are suppo rted by dues a nd do na tions rece i ved from

Rosicmcian students. After expenses are covered, all additional

íunds go back into the organization to further benefit its students,

allowing us to expand our services, develop new programs and

oth er projeets that will help us accom plish our hu m anitar ian goals.

ach month, you’Il receive a packet of weekly lessons,

called monographs, to read in the privacy oí your own

duce certain ideas and experiments in a straightforward and

simple manner. We ask that you devote about one and a half

hours once a week to study that week’s lesson and perform any

exercise or experim ent given. For rhe rem ainder of the week weencourage you to periodically think about the importanr ideascontained in rhat lesson, and make repeated efforts at accom-

p li sh in g rhe ex ercises. W e ask you for th is sim ple com m it m en t

How is the Information Structured? New students beg in with a series of three in troducto ry Degrees

comprising an overview of the Rosicrucian course of study. This is

followed by nine a ddition al Degrees, each h aving its own p articular

emphasis. For instance, the Fitrh Degree deais primarily with

ancien t philosophies, the Sixth w ith the he alth of the physical and

psychic consciousness, the Seventh with th e aura and th e projec-tion of the psychic body. The teachings are continuously updated

to reflect our modem world, while keeping true to the traditions of

the Order. U nderlying this changing language and format is a code

of natural law which forms the core of the Rosicrucian teachings

and w hich remains constant ov er time.

Progression of the TeachingsThe Rosicrucian system does not promise instant enlight'

enrnent. To complete our basic program of lessons, from theintroductory courses up through the end of the Ninth Degree,

takes approximately five years. Although in five years you will

have achieved a high level of mastery over self and your environ-

ment, our teachings continué past the Ninth Degree for many

years, supplementing the basic lessons and continuing to stimulate

further developm ent.

The uniqueness cif the Rosicrucian teachings doesn’t come

simply from the body of knowledge i( offers, but also from th e way in

wh ich it is organized and broug ht to life thro ug h p ractical exercisesand experiments to produce a genuine evolution in consciousness.

Each Degree covers an important step you need in order to benefit

from the following Degree. Each exercise supports, reinforces, and

build s upon th e preced ing exercises and te chniq ues, leading to

balance d, full develo pm ent.

The three main elements of Rosicrucian membership are rhe

system of ho m e study lessons, th e O rde r’s initiatic trad ition , andrhe activities of local Rosicrucian groups. Additional bcnefits of

membership are described later in this booklet.

The Rosicrucian Home Study LessonsThe teachings of the Rosicrucian Order , AMORC, are

pre sen te d in bookle ts call ed m onogra phs, and the le ssons are

divided into two main sections, the Neophyte section and

the Temple section. Following is a description of some of thesubjects covered in rhe first five years of rhe Rosicrucian system.

s a member of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, you

are not simply purchasing a course of study. In fact, wedo not sell the Rosicrucian lessons at any price. In the

rrue tradition of the an cien t mystery schools, the teachings were

never sold, but were extended to sincere seekers. In keeping with

this tradition, the Rosicrucian teachings are made available to

students as a benefit of their active membership. Your member-

ship dues suppo rt all aspeets of the org aniza tion’s activities, n ot

Neophyte Sectionln ancient times, if you wished to study the great myster-

ies, you would travel to a temple and petition for admittance

as a student. Once accepted as a beginning student, you would

be know n as a  Neophyte , and you would enter the  A tr ium , or

recept ion chamber of the temple. In the Atrium, you would

receive preliminary instructions before being allowed to enter

the m ain temp le itself and study the high er teachings. Following

the analogy of the ancient temples, the early lessons of the

Rosicrucian monographs are called Atrium lessons, and begin-ning R osicrucian studen ts are called N eophytes.

1NTRQDUCTORY LESSONS

Right from the start, the introductory monographs present

basic Rosicrucian concepts th a t you can apply in pra ctical ways.

One of the first things you learn as a Neophyte is that you are a

dual being. In addition to your five physical senses, you also have

a psychic sense. The exercises in these introductory lessons aredesigned to gradually awaken and develop the psychic faculty. The

exercises presented here and throughout the entire Rosicrucian

he Rosicrucian Order, AMORC', is a philosophical andinitiatic tradition. As a member, you are not just taking

a course of study. You are passing through LNegrees of study, rituals, ceremonies, exercises, and demonstrations that

ha ve a long historical background with new information constantlyheing added.

Rosicrucian initiarions are rituals designed to mark them ilestones of a stud en t’s progress on th e m ystical pa th. In these

heautiful rituals, mystical laws and principies are demonstratedin a dramatic form, in order to both inform and inspire the

Rosicrucian student. All of the Degrees of Rosicrucian study

are preceded by an initiation ceremony, written in an impres-

sive and hrief form tha t can easily he performed a t hom e during

your study period. You also have the option of receiving these

initiations in a mo re elabó rate form in the O rde r’s affiliated

Lodges. You’ll find that these initiations, when conferred in

the Temple of a Rosicrucian Lodge with all officers participat-ing, are even more impressive to the psyche. Both the home

ceremonies and the Lodge initiations are specially prepared to

introduce to you in an impressive, symbolic, and dramatic way

the importance of each new Degree into which you are entering.

The origin of initiation is as oíd as the earliest civilizations.

The ancient Egyptians learned that demonstrations, the perfor

mance of various acts, and the use of objects, help to facilítate

instruction, so that the lessons are more easily impressed upon

the minds of the students. Dramas of impressive ceremonies

consisting of music, spectacular lighting, processionals, chanting,

and colorful costumes become an unforgettable experience to

the p art icipant .

All true esoteric initiations are mystery-dramas. In these drama-tizations, ancient people sought to reenact certain fundamental

truths of nature which they had discovered. These mystery-dramas

were somewhat like the modern passion plays. In ancient times,

the word mystery did not have the same connotation that i t does

now. It refenred to a uniqu e gnosis— th at is, knowledge w hich

was to be revealed to the candidate for initiation. In fact, in ancient

Rome the mysteries were called inicia. The initiates were called

mystac. The Latin word initiare meant “to inspire,” and initium

m ea nt “begin ning ” or “training.” Thus, candidates for initiation were

introduced to an inspiring knowledge th at was to m ake an em otional

or psychic im pression upon the ir consciousness as well as to add to

their knowledge. In a dram atic way, the initiation sheds illum ina tion

upon certain subjects which otherwise may not be thoroughlyunderstood and appreciated. Further, the mystical aspect of

initiation arouses your psychic and emotional response concemingthe subjects you are about to study and produces an awareness, a

state of consciousness which otherw ise could n ot be achieved.

N o ri te or ceremon y, ho weve r, no m att er what its form or how

it is con du cted , is a true in itiatio n if it does no t do th e following:

(a) cause you to engage in introspe ction, tha t is, to tum your

consciousness within, to look upon yourself; (b) engender within

you a feeling of aspiration and idealista; and (c) exact from youa sacred obligation or promise which you make to yourself that

you will try to fulfill your aspirations. T he purpose of Ro sicrucian

initiation is for the same traditional and psychological reasons.

Partí cipa t ion in initia tion rituals does n ot, in itself, m ake

you a true initiate, and Rosicrucian students are not required to

partic íp ate in ri tu als . You becom e a R osic rucia n in it ia te only

through your own efforts, merits, and preparation. This means

that as you progress along the Rosicrucian path, it is through

your personal work that you will advance; and everything thatyou can become, you will become through your own patience

and perseverance. E ven in antiquity w hen seekers traveled thou-

sands of miles to reach ancient temples so as to be initiated andreceive instructions from the Masters, they understood that true

ini t ia t ion— m eaning i lluminat ion of consciousness— would

come only w hen they were prepared or ready on the inne r plañe,whether or not they were in a temple or proceeding through a

cerem ony or ritual at tha t particular time. W ha t was true centuries

ago is still true today. However, it is possible to accelerate this inner  pre para tion, and th is is the purpose of Ros icru cian in itia tions.

Our Traditional

and Chronological Historyhe Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, is knovvn intemation-

a^W ty i ts traditional and auth entic t i tle , the A ncientMystical Order Rosae Crucis, from which is derived the

acronym “A M O R C .” Th e A ncient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis

is the L atin form of the orga nization’s ñame, w hich literally trans-

lates into the Ancient Mystical Order of the Rosy Cross. There

is no religious connotation associated with this symbol; the Rosy

Cross symbol predates C hristianity. T he cross symbolically rep-resents the hu m an body and the rose represents the individuáis

unfolding consciousness. Together, the rose and cross represent the

experiences and challenges of a thoughtful life well lived. Thus,

by our ñam e and symbo l we re pre sent th e ancien t Rosicrucians, perp etu ating the true tr adit io ns of Rosic ru cia n m ovem ents from

centuries past to the presen t day.

Th e history of the R osicrucian Order, A M O R C , may be

divided into two general classifications: traditional and chron

ological. The traditional history consists of mystical allegories

and fascinating legends that have been passed down for centu

ries by word of m outh. T he Ro sicrucian O rde r’s chron ological

accounts are based on specific dates and verifiable faets.

Our Roots in the Ancient WorldT he R osicrucian mov em ent, of w hich the R osicrucian Order,

AMORC, is the most prominent modern representative, has its

roots in the mystery traditions, philosophy, and myths of ancient

Egypt dating back to approximately 1500 B.C. In antiquity the

word “mystery” referred to a special gnosis, a secret wisdom.

Thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt select bodies or schools

vvere formed to explore the mysteries of life and leam the secrets

of this hidden wisdom. Only sincere students, displaying a desirefor knowledge and meeting certain tests were considered wor-

thy of being inducted into these mysteries. Over the course of

centuries these mystery7schools added an initiatory dimensión to

the knowledge they transmitted.

It is further trad itionally related th at the O rde r’s first member-

students met in secluded chambers in magnificent oíd temples,

where, as candidates, they were initiated into the great mysteries.

Their mystical studies then assumed a more closed character and

were held exclusively in temples which had been built for that pu rpose. Rosicrucian tr adit io n re la te s th at th e great py ramids of

Giza were most sacred in the eyes of initiates. Contrary to whathistorians affirm, our tradition relates that the Giza pyramids were

not built to be the tombs of pharaohs, but were actually places

Page 30: Mastery of Life (2005).pdf

of study and mystical initiation. The mystery

schools, over centuries of time, gradually evolved

into great centers of leaming, attracting studentsfrom through out the kno wn world.

Pha raoh Th utm ose III, who ruled Egvpt from

1500 to 1447 B.C., organized the first esoteric

school of init iates founded upon principies and

methods similar to those perpetuated todayhy the Rosicrucian Order , AMORC. Decadeslater Pharaoh Amenhotep IV was initiated

into the secret school. This most enlightened

pharaoh— histo ry ’s first m onoth eis t— was so

inspired hy the mystery teachings that he gave

a com pletely new direc tion to Egypt’s religiónand philosophy. He established a religiónwhich recognized the Aton, the solar disk,

as being the syrnbol of the solé deity— thefoundation of life itself, the symbol of Light,Truth , and Joy—and changed his ñame to

Akhnaton to reflect these new ideas. And

although the earlier religión was later rees-

tablished, the mystical idea was put forth in

hu m an co nsciousness, and i ts fíame nev er died.

Centuries later, Greek philosophers such as

Thales and Pythagoras, the Román philosopher Plotinus, and others, joumeyed to Egypt and were

initiated into the mystery schools. They then bro ug ht th eir advanced leam ing an d wisdom to

the Western world. Their experiences are the first

records of wh at eventually grew an d blossomed intothe Rosicrucian Order. T he ñam e of the Order, as it

is now known, was to come much later. However,

the Rosicrucian Order always perpetuated its heri-

tage of an cien t symbolism an d principies.

Early European Beginningslt was in the time of Charlemagne (742-814)

that the French philosopher Amaud introduced

the mystical teachings into France, and fromthere they spread to much of Western Europe.Throughout medieval Europe mystical knowledgewas often necessarily couched in symbolism or

disguised and hidden in the love songs of

Troubadours, the formularies of Alchemists, the

symbolical system known as the Qabala, and therituals of Orders of Knighthood.

While much of medieval Europe lay indarkness, the highly advanced Arah civilization preservad a large bo dy oí th e mys tica l te ac hin gs

Alexandria Library. Philosophy, medicine, math-

Alchemy— the art o f t ransm uta t ion— carne into prominence vvith the Alexandrian

Greeks. It was then introduced to the Arabs,

who then transmitted this ar t and forerunner

oi chemistry to Europe. The alchemists playeda tremendous part in the early history of the

Rosicrucian O rder . W hile m any alchemists

were interested in making gold, some weremore concerned with the transmutat ion of  human character . European alchemists and

Knights Templar, in contact with the Arabcivilization at the time of the Crusades,

brought m uch ot th is wisdom to the W est .In Europe the transcendental a lchemists—

mystics and philosophers— sought to transmute the base elements of human character  into the more noble virtues and to release the

wisdom of the divine self within the indi

vidual. Some of the renowned alchemistswho were also Rosicrucians or were closely

associated with them were Alber tus Magnus,

Roger Bacon, Paracelsus, Nicholas Flamel, and

Robert Fludd.

As the oíd saying goes, “The truth shallmake you free.” Consequently, those who soughtTruth and attempted to expound it to their

fellow humans became the objects of persecution

by ty ra nnical rulers or na rrow religious systems.

For several centuries, due to the lack of freedoniof thought, the Order had to conceal itself under

various ñames. However, in all times and places

the Order never ceased its activities, perpetuating

its ideáis and its teachings, participating direct-

ly or indirectly in the advancement of the arts, sciences, and civilization in general, and alwaysemphasizing the equality of men and womenand the true solidarity of all hum anity.

Today’s Rosicrucian legacy consists of a vast collection of know l

edge which has come down to us through many centuries to enrich

the cultural and spiritual heritage of AMORC. To rhe knowledge

passed on by th e sages of ancie nt Egypt were ad ded philosop hica lconcepts expressed by the great thinkers of ancient Greece, India,

and the Arab world. Then, a few centuries later, the mystical precep ts of Ros icrucian alch em ists of th e Middle Ages were formu-

lated, followed by the vast expansión of knowledge which occurred

from the Renaissance to th e prese nt day.

The New Frontier As you can see, Rosicrucian ideas and our unique process

the universe.

In the twenty-first century we feel strongly that these

The most beautful and most profound

experience is the sensation of the mystical

It is the sower of all true Science. He to

whom this emotion is a stranger, who can

no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe,

is as good as dead. To know that what is

impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting

itself as the highest wisdom and the most

radiant beauty which our dull

faculties can comprehend only in their

primitive forms - this knowledge, this

feeling is at the center of true religiousness.
