THESE MEN WERE

ROSICRUCIANSWhat is a Rosicrucian?

One who has learned, or is learning, aphiloso phy o f life—a path to confid ent

living.

Tod ay there are thousands o f men and

women who enjoy the influence, the

comfort, the personal power, the unique

science of living as taught by the Rosicru-

Their lives reflect the personal accom

plishments and understanding that come

with the mastery of life. As these teachings inspired these men, so can they

inspire you.

These are the wo rds of a pro mi nen t physician.

Unintentionally, he has spoken for mill ions of men

This inequa l it y o f man is apparent to most of us.

You know persons who are radiant with health

from birth and seemingly i mmu ne to disease. You

men and wom en whose every plan becom es a

successful venture. Each enterprise they enter turns

into a golden op po rtu ni ty —as if they had the touch

of the fabled King Midas. Around them, however, a

mult i tud e of un for tu na te beings live and struggle.

What makes one man more successful than an

oth er? Is it train ing in  ju s t on e line? You knowtha t is not true! You can not mak e a goo d business

man out of a youth who has been taught nothingmore than buying and sell ing. You cannot make a

been taught only the principles included in the

restricted four years in medical college. There

T H E T H O R O U G H F A R E O F L I F E

Let us begin with existence as we know it. Life is

a thoroughfare upon which we find ourselves travel

ers. Behind us is our immediate beginning—birth. It

is a vast eternity. Ahea d o f us is sti ll an ot he r

inevitable vast eternity—death. It is

a myst ery whi ch e ith er instills fear

did not ask for this life; yet we

could not have refused i t . How,

then, shall we react to it? What

shall we do with this period o f conscious ness whichthe years afford us?

Many men and women resign themselves to the

influences of their environment. They allow them

selves to be drawn or impelled along this causeway

of life. They are like balls of snow, rolling at afurious rate o f speed dow n the side of a great

mo unta in. O ne mom en t, they are free, out in the

open, encountering few or no obstacles, and they

are unconcerned. The next moment, they have

collided with unanticipated events and happenings.

They are at a loss to avoid these conditions or to

rise above them. Thus they travel through the years,

sometimes wondering if the vicissitudes of life, the

bitterness, the pains, are worth the price, worth the

occasional pleasures and snatches of peace of mindwhich come their way.

WHY ARE WE HERE?

Certainly, at some time yo u m us t have asked

yourself as you looked back upon yo ur past activi

t ies and likewise con tem pla ted you r future: “ Is this

haphazard existence my destiny? Why are we

here? ” Also, is there a mother who has never gazeddown on the inno cent babe nestled in her arms and

wondere d: “ What does this span of existence hold

for him? ”

Is it not time that hu ma ni ty ceases plunging into

t h e u n k n o w n along this thoroughfare of life, hoping

to grasp the skirts of passing op por tun ity ? Would

life no t be entirely diff ere nt for you if you could

contr ol yo ur moods? If you could form desirable

habits and break those no t desired; if you couldknow how to see in the events happening about you

the trends of tomorrow, would yo u not be more

assured and co nfid ent in the strength o f such kno wl

edge? If you kne w how to develop yo ur will

power suff iciently to meet the demands upon you

and to make the right decision, would not many of

yo ur troubles, the result of indecision, disappear? If

prod uce helpful, const ructive , intelligent ideas at a

time when an important thought, a useful plan,

meant the difference between discouragement and

achievement, would you not feel equal to any

circums tanc e? Certainl y, such a life would be far

superior in its advantages.

DOES FATE CONTROL US?

Do not be deceived by some inadequate philosophy. Millions of humans try to excuse their perplex

ity or helplessness during this earthly span by

saying to themselves and oth ers tha t they are de pen d

ent upon the decrees o f fa te . These fatalists pro

claim that infinite pow ers have predestine d their

every act and it is useless for them to intervene.

T he fatalist, by such a belief, d enies his po we r to

reason, his will, and facu lty o f choice. Y et these

very faculties are evidences of man’s true relation

ship to the universal powers a bou t him. Th e powe r

of thou ght and the at t r ibut e of decision argue

against the noti on that we are mere puppets, with

every act along this span of life orda ine d for us in

advance.

It is true that there are universal forces overwhich we have no control. We cannot change the

inheren t structu re of the universe itself nor the

causes that bring its forces into play.  B u t we can

harness these forces! We can attune ourselves with

them, and we can alter or contr ol their ultimate

effect upon us. Man can enjoy a great deal more

mastership over his environm ent than he presently

does. He c an arrange the affairs of his life so that

he can use the forces of life as an ally. Like a sailor

turning his sails to the wind, like a generatordirecting the flow of electricity, or like nuclear

fission heating water for power, man can harness

the other forces of his existence. This is not a

religious question; it is a philosophical question, one  that concerns you and your l i fe .

Success in life me an s mastership , and mastership

means util izing every inner force and power of the

being, as well as every oute r   force. Man’s creative

abil i t ies do no t rest in the musc ul ar strength o f his

bo dy, nor in his fert i le imagination. He mu st be

able to bring his menta l imaging into material

expression daily, hourly. To do this, he must be

able to use other facul t ies than simple visualization.

Furthermore , he must use these powers according tothe purpose for which they were intended.

A BLUEPRINT OF LIVING

Since we are part of an orderly universe, with i ts

majestic and immutable laws, above and be low, then

there also exists for m an, as part of this great

cosmic scheme, a tru e pur po se in life. By knowi ng

this pu rpo se, by r elating it to his exist ence each

day, man discovers himself. He bec ome s the rightful

mast er o f his do m in io n—this wo rld —and relegates

suffering, misery, and ignorance to their proper

places and apart from himself.

Certainly, you have instinctively felt that there

was more to l ife than you have already experienced.

Let us assure y ou that ther e is a t rue b luepr int o f

living. Even those occur renc es which have been

painful to us are part of a chain o f causes which

can be made useful if we understand them. Those

who cont inuous ly suffer misfor tunes and whose

lives are not as progressive or inspiring as they

would want them can experience marked changes

when this cosmic blueprint is followed.

True happiness con

sis ts not in the knowl

but in good life; not in

might turn ou t for the best? Mil l ions of hum ans

throughout the civilized world today live just like

that, taking blind chanc es—and t hese same millions

often wonder, therefore, if the life they live is really

worth while.

CREATIVE FORCES WITHIN YOU

Within man there are constructive creative forces

always at work and always attuned with the creative

forces of the Cosmic. These forces mus t repair the

damage d one to the body, overcome the strains and

stresses upon the mental system, and guide the

indecision of man’s mind in the r ight direction.

From the natura l forces opera t ing throughout the

universe, certain harmonic vibrations, etherealenergies, and vitalizing powers affect man’s being

and change the natu re of his physical body or react

upon his mental eff iciency. Thus man is hourly a

complex being, inf luenced by forces and potent

principles of a serious and important nature.

Man m ust und erst and these things if he is to

become a success in life and use his  fre ed o m to act

in a wise ma nner . He m us t eith er live com ple tely in

ha rm on y wit h the forces in and around him or atvariance with them. There is no middle course.

An understanding of natural, cosmic laws is the

only m eans of mastership of life. F or hundred s of

years, the Rosi cruc ians have been able to

prove this to men and women through

their remarkable teachings.

What it is, this bluepr in t o f li fe , this

plan for mastery, and how it may be ob

tained will now be revealed to you.

Th ere is an invisible bo nd w ith the power

beyond. Like a silver thread your inner

consciousness binds you to the universe.

P a r t T w o

T he

Goldenq ^ ̂ Several th ou sand year s ago in an-o e c r e i cient Egypt, man first began his

investigation of those mysteries

which su rrounded him. The f irst and mos t s tupend

ous discovery he made was t he dua l it y o f se l f   He

learned that in addition to his physical body, with

its limbs and organs, there was some ethereal nature

or e lemen t o f his being. Man then became, for the

first time, truly self-conscious, or rather conscious

o f  the greater inner self

Whence came this ethereal essence of his natu re

or self? It could not be affected by that which

pain ed th e b o d y —by heat, cold, or hunger. It could

be active, think and conceive , while the body was at

rest or even asleep. Moreover, what would happen

to it at th e end o f life—or de ath ? Was it ind est ruc

tible? Did it survive? With such qu es ti on s as these

confounding the minds of the early Egypt ians and

y e t in tr ig uin g them , man began a search that hasnever ceased on the part of intell igent men and

women everywhere.

In the co m m on p he no me na of everyday l ife—in

the observation of the coming and going of the

seasons, in th e ebb and flo w o f the tides, in the

waxing and waning of the moon- these ea r ly men

discovered the law of cycles, the peri odi city o f all

nature. With the seasonal dea th of pla nt life and its

recurrent bir th inthe spring, they

in l iving things. In the regular jo ur ne y of the

silvery specks or planets, and the apparent

path of the sun across the heavens, men dis

cerned the infall ibi l i ty of nature and the

suggestion o f a great universal ord er pervad

ing all things. All of this heightened their

inquisitiveness.

THE ANCIENT WISDOM SCHOOLS

In the grea t temples

of the Nile, the brother

hood m et as a school of

arcane w isdom.

What was man’s relat ion to the heavens

and the ear th? Did these forces affect his

daily affairs and the cycle of his existence?

These further questions, l ike great spades,

served man to dig beneath the surface of

his own consciousness. Since as remote a period as

5000 B.C., cer tain men and women have sincerely

and wi thout fea r or pre judice not only probed in to

the earth or scanned the heavens above, but have

investigated the mysteries of their minds and selves.

They formed themselves into arcane or my s t e r y

schools for the acquisi t ion and s tudy of such knowl

edge—and fo r the mas tery o f life.

He who knows most

grieves most for wasted

time .-Dartre. (A Rosi

crucian.)

Much of the start l ing wisdom they acquired wasreduced by them to wri t ing on s tone table ts and

papyrus rol ls-but the greatest port ion was con

veyed from one to another by w ord o f mou t h .

Sir E.A. Wallis Budge, renowned Egyptologist , in

one o f his learned works, relates with respect to

these mystery schools: “There must have been a

progressive d ev elo pm en t in the ‘mys teries ’ and i t

seems as if some of them were entirely unknown

under the old kingdom. It is impossible to doubt

tha t there were ‘my ste ries ’ in the E gyp tian rites, and this being so, it is impossible to think that the

highest order of the Kheri-Hebs (Masters) did not

possess esoteric (inner) knowledge which they

guar ded wit h the great est care. Each, if I read the

evide nce c or re ctl y, posse ssed a ‘gnosis, ’ a ‘super

iori ty of kno wled ge’ which they never put into

writing, and so were enab led to enlarge or diminish

its scope as circumstances made it necessary. It is,

therefore, absurd to expect to find in Egyptianpapyri descriptions of the secrets which formed the

esoteric knowledge of the Kheri-Hebs.”

The disclosures of these ancient investigators are

astounding even to the scientific world today. Theeternal truth s they unveiled—the facts, the hit her to

unk now n laws o f na tur e—made them “m asters” of

fear and l ibera ted them from the undependable

elements of so-called chance and luck. What they

were able to a ccom pli sh in th eir lives, to do for

friends and members of their families, how they

were able to uti l ize nature’s forces to do their

bidding were the cause of the legends that have

come down to us today abo ut the ancient miracle

workers. To the uninit iated, to those still steeped in

ignorance who were dwelling in darkness and doubt,

these sages and m ystics seemed to be per for min g

miracles.

To those of the mystery schools who knew, these

dem ons tra tion s were not magical processes but

ra ther the simple appl ication o f a know ledge by

which m an can direct the laws of natu re and the

faculties of his own being. With the same un de r

standing, what they did,  y o u can do.

THE SUPPRESSED KNOWLEDGE

Truth m akes m en free. Consequent ly, those who

sought i t and a t tempted to expound i t to their

fellows bec ame the objects of persecutio n by tyrants.

The tyrants were the ancient dictators who sought

to dominate the lives and think

ing of men and women to fur

ther their own personal gain or

their beliefs. For exam ple, the

Roman Emp eror Just inian was

“Make not thy mind

to be divided for the

sake of thy tongue.”

one of these. He was a misguided religious zealot who

issued an edict in the Sixth Cen tur y see king to abolish

all the mys tery schools. He considere d the me n and

they had discovered a menace to the or th od ox and

often superst i t ious dogmas which he wished to pro

concealed and k ept for the inquiring, courageo us fe w

out of the mult i tudes.

This amazing knowledge, which the brotherhoods

have preserved, is available today to the seeker for

personal achievement and the mastery of l ife.  I t

Its efficacy, its great power, can be applied to theaffairs o f yo ur life with startling beneficial results.

STRANGE EXPERIENCES

Page Twelve

Let us face facts. Y ou r life is in fl uen ced by ma ny

inexplicable things—ph en om en a and happ ening s that

you sometimes cannot quite explain or overcome.

You may call them uncanny. Perhaps you seek to

push them into the backgro und of you r consciousness. You may even laugh about them to others.

Nevertheless, they are often the direct or indirect

factors in preve nting you from realizing some ideal,

something you are seeking to at ta in

or accomplish , or fro m freeing

yours elf o f worry a nd strife. Have

you, for example, had these strange

experiences? You have met persons

for the first time who have been

presentable in appearance and in

sp ee ch —and yet imm edi ate ly a wave

of distrust and dislike for them

You are several selves and personalities in

one. Stop being a stranger to yourself. There

is no greater adventure than exploring the

f ron t ie r s o f the m ind.

would sweep over you. Why? It is a manifestation

o f  the human aura—an invisible, magnetic radiation

from the human body which we can detect . I t

either repels or a tt ra ct s —and it is scientifically

demonstrable . This emana tion also has a mos t prac

tical mys t ica l power   which was known for centur ies

to the students of the mystery schools, to the sagesand adepts of old .

Have yo u ever ente red a roo m that depressed

you? The room, perh aps in a home, hotel, or office

building, might have been clean, orderly, and even

attractively furnished; yet while in it you were

unable to accomplish your best work or feel at ease.

Do you know that intense emotional outbursts ,

hatred, jealousy, and anger can and do affect ma

terial substances so that every room in which theyoccur takes on a depressing environment? These are

not superst i t ions— not supposi tions —but the effects

of l i t t le -known natura l laws aro un d us. Obviously,

understanding them, as do those who have this

esoteric knowledge, makes for the m as tery o f such

circums tances.

USING YOUR INTUITION

You have ofte n had the experience of an intuitive

impression, a hunch or idea tha t was most en

lightening but seemed to come from nowhere. Do

you know that intui t ion can provide an answer for

almost every question, a solution to many predica

men ts in whic h you find yourself? Do you know

tha t it can aid yo u in keeping the affairs of yo ur

l ife in order? Do y ou fur th er kno w that this

intui t ive knowledge is pa rt o f a universal cosmic

intelligence which pervades the entire universe andevery cell of yo ur being and that you can comman d

it to serve y o u —tha t yo u can draw upo n it as you

will? While millions of men and w ome n rely solely

up on their brains and the training which is given to

them through educat ion, those who know the

esoter ic wisdom wait for no hunches. They do not

rely solely up on their o ute r minds but are able to

draw up on the vast resources they possess and

which also exist in the cosmic forces around them.

Life is a mission.Every other definition

of life is false, and leads

all w ho acce pt it astray.

Religion, science, philos

oph y, tho ugh still at

var iance upon many

points, all agree in this,

that every existence is

an aim. —M a zz in t  (A

Rosicrucian.)

Psychologists today say that man uses only a

fraction of the inherent power with which he is

imbued as a human being. The mystic brotherhoods

have know n for centur ies how t o comm and and use

much more of this power to round out and enjoy

an enriched life. Hundreds of the so-called mysteries

are understandable and workable laws of the uni

verse to those who master this esoteric ( inner)

knowledge.

“W hy, ” yo u ma y ask, “ is not this knowledge

generally and widely disseminated to mankind

today? Why, if such il luminating truth s exist and

are available to m an, is he deprived of the m? ” We

have shown wh at occurred in ancient t imes when

the attempt was made to teach man these simpletruths. They were often suppressed. Even today,

such knowle dge ca nn ot be taught to everyone. To

those who are sincere in bettering their own lives

and advancing humanity, such knowledge becomes a

power for good. On the other hand, in the hands of

the selfish and the bigoted, the same knowledge

might become a factor for misuse and fur ther

persecution of the ignorant and the helpless. But

today, as we have said, it has survived because of

the careful guardianship of the brotherhood mysteryschools and societies.

The oldest of these hum anitarian societies, world

wide in extent and not a religion, is the Ro si cru

cians. It offers you this knowledge, as old as time,

for the fullness o f life, free of any religious intoler

ance or political or other prejudices or biases.

At tun e yourself with those who are

successful and happy. Cooperate withnature’s laws and revel in the power that

comes into your being with the dawn of

each day and abides l ike an unseen guest

in your home, your office, your places

of meditat ion and pleasure.

TheAge-Old

The Rosicrucians are aL l C I d l l o f rat er na l ord er. T h e y are a

body of progressive men

and women, interested in exhausting the possibil i t ies

of life by a sane and sensible use of their heritageof esoteric knowledge and the facult ies which they

possess as human beings. This knowledge which

they cherish, and to which they add fur ther contr i

but ions, embraces every realm o f hu ma n endeavor

and every ph en om en on o f the universe known to

man.

They are men and w ome n such as you would

meet in any gathering of thinking, open-minded,

and inquiring pe op le—yet they are to be fou nd inevery walk of life, from the hu mb lest to the

highest . Your next-door neighbor, perhaps the man

or woman who works in the off ice or shop with

you, may be a Rosicrucian.

The Rosicrucian tradit ions which have come

down by word of mo uth , and those which are so

often related in literary reference works, tell how

the Order had i ts bi r th as one o f the mystery

schools of esoteric wisdom in ancient Eg ypt during

the 18th Dynas ty, or the reign of Phar aoh Akh na

ton, about 1350 B.C. Its  fascinating sym b o lism and

rituals relate it definitely to the illuminating wisdom

of the sages of Egypt and the great centers of

learning o f the ancie nt lands o f the East. Its first

member-students, i t is further tradit ionally related,

met in the secluded cham bers of the Great Pyramid. In

the magnif icent temples, as candidates, they were

initiated into the great m ysteries. These legends also

recou nt how i ts adepts , i t s great masters and

teachers, imparted some of their wisdom to thebui lders of King Solomon’s magnif icent and sym

THE WESTERN WORLD ROSICRUCIANS

The Rosicrucians f i rst came to America and to

the Western w orld in 1694. Und er the leadership of Joh ann Kelpius, a Master o f one o f the Rosicrucian

Lodges of Europe, a smal l band of members who

sought  freed o m o f th in k in g and of speech and the

right to search for t ruth wherever i t might be

foun d, desired the l iberty o f the new land to the

west. The y landed in what is now the great ci ty of

Philadelphia, and their first colony was located inwhat became the famous Fa i rm oun t Park of tha t

astro nom ical observatory in Ameri ca and the West

the f i rs t American symphony orchestra and devel

and members act ively part ic ipated in the founding

Today the Rosicrucian Order, as a vast, progressive

Rosicrucian System of Guidance

The Rosicrucian monographs or lessons consti tute

a fascinating revelation o f the mys terie s of life.

However, this great human engineering done by the

Rosicrucians, this building of lives and this implanting in them of the factors of confidence, success,

and happiness, is n o t  accomplished by any impersonal, corresp ondence-cour se met ho d o f merely ex

tending knowledge to the member. Each lesson also

takes into consideration the need for the quickening

of the consciousness of the individual. It seeks to

awaken his dormant talents and to develop his

personal powers rather than to cram his mind with

cold and often-times useless facts.

The member, in the privacy of his own home, is

made to realize that he is com preh end ing andmastering his en vir on me nt and affairs, as well as jus t

learning. No one is accepted or permitted to remain

as a mere student of a system of study.

HOW THE LESSONS ARE PREPARED

The supreme executive of the Rosicrucian Order, known as the Imperator, decided that the Rosicru

cian teachings for this private, personal kind of

membership could not

be put in book form like

texts on accountancy or

mathemat ics , which infrequently change. Any

method for issuing the

Rosicrucian teachings

m ust he ke pt flex ib le .

This is so that new

discoveries—which Rosi

crucian researchers are consistently ma ki ng —may beincluded that members may enjoy the benefi ts

which they ma ke possible. Th us these teachings are

Page Twenty-Two

issued in ma nusc ript form, four for every m on th in

the year. Their wording is in large, easy-to-read

type. Suitable i l lustrations are included with them

whenever it is necessary to make a topic especially

clear. No expense is spared by the Rosicrucian staff

to assure the mem ber of get t ing the u tm ost f rom

his membership.

NO COLLEGE EDUCATION NECESSARY

Edu cat ors have often highly praised the pres enta

t ion of the personal, private Rosicrucian instructions

at home. An yon e able to read and unde rstand his

dai ly newspaper would be able to comprehend with

great pleasure the marvelous b ut m ost simply pre

sented t ruths which these lessons contain. Themas tery o f any subject, the Rosicrucians know , is

shown by stating it simply, and in this, the

Rosicrucian monographs, or lessons, excel.

ARRANGED IN EASY STEPS

The stud ent is intro duc ed to each topic in i ts

order. Gradually and simply, a truth, the solution of

a mystery, vital knowledge, a useful fact, or a bit of information merges into another .

The member i s not p lunged   into a

maze of terms and phrases which he

cannot unders tand and which annoy

and fatigue him. The lessons are

arrange d by degrees and grades,

each following in its proper order. The lessons, or

monographs , a re mai led to the m em ber in sealed

envelopes by first-class mail.

LITTLE TIME REQUIRED

You will be required to devote only one hour to

one hour and thir ty minutes once a week to obtain

the vital value from the lessons. During the rest of

the week , while walking, r iding, or even working, you

will f ind th at, wi th ou t inte rferenc e with yo ur affairs,

you can try some of the principles you read. In fact,

you can use the m freque ntly in master ing dai ly pro blems.

like being able to test it personally and experience

FEES AND DUES

The Order is strictly a brotherhood, operating in that

sense as do other fraternities. Membe rshi p in the Rosic ru

cian Order carries with it the many benefits distinct to all

fraternities and many others that are unique. As in fraterni

ties, there are membership dues, payable quarterly, and anominal “ registration fee.” This fee contributes towar d the

extensive process of establishing your membership file,

credentials, initial orientation material, and your assign

ment to a particular Class Master. Your quarterly dues

contribut e to the general operatin g funds of the Order, and

take care of its administ rative expenses, its building funds,

seminars, national and international humanitarian activi

ties, research, and scientific expeditions.

In addition to these general activities of the Order, the

Rosicrucians conduct the courses mentioned on previous

pages. These courses o f study are given without a ny extra

charges or fees. Therefore, we wish you to keep in mind that

the study and instruction work is a separate and distinct

feature of the Order, not fo u n d in any other fraternal

organization.

(The Rosicrucian Order, A MO RC , is registered thr ough

out the world as a nonprofit organization.)

The Supr eme Council has purposely made the Registra

tion Fee very nominal. Quarterly dues are payable in

advance and should reach the Grand Lodge prior to the

first o f the mon th for which they are due. Lessons and all

frate rnal benefits will continue for as long as you maintain

your current dues status, and express a desire for active

membership. These fee s include all the benefits o f the

O rder ’s activities. There are no other assessments, nor

bo oks which m ust be purch ased in order to study, and no

limitations to the degree o f advancement that members

m ay m ak e in their studies. For the amount of the Registra

tion Fee and Dues payable in your country, please see

A pplic ation form in rear of this book. The bimonthly ma g

azine, the  Rosicrucian Digest , is also sent gratis to all active

members of the Rosicrucian Order.
