The project encapsulates a proposal for Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller on how to create a sustainable legacy in the heart of Copenhagen as an alternative to the Opera House. The narrative of the project is influenced by “THE NIGHTINGALE”, a fairy tale by H.C. Andersen.

The project is thereby created through an abstraction that in the end encapsulates a concrete proposal.

This report is a summary of the essentials in the project.

The beginning:

“The Nightingale” (Danish: “Nattergalen”) is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about an emperor who prefers the tinkling of a bejeweled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the Emperor is near death, the nightingale’s song restores his health.

Plot:

The Emperor of China learns that one of the most beautiful things in his empire is the song of the nightingale. When he orders the nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid (the only one at court who knows of its whereabouts) leads the court to a nearby forest where the bird is found. The nightingale agrees to appear at court. The Emperor is so delighted with the bird’s song that he keeps the nightingale in captivity. When the Emperor is given a bejeweled mechanical bird he loses interest in the real nightingale, who returns to the forest. The mechanical bird eventually breaks down due to overuse. The Emperor is taken deathly ill a few years later. The real nightingale learns of the Emperor’s condition and returns to the palace. Death is so moved by the nightingale’s song that he departs and the emperor recovers.

The nightingale agrees to sing to the emperor of all the happenings in the empire, that he will be known as the wisest emperor ever to live.

I have connected the elements and roles of the characters in the fairy tale specifically to places in the centre of Copenhagen.

The main characters include:

1. Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller (Maersk headquarters)

- The Emperor

2 . Copenhagen Opera House

- The Mechanical Nightingale

3. Christiania

- The Real Nightingale

ARNOLD MEARSK MC-KINNEY MØLLER (1913 - 2012)

- became a partner in the A.P. Møller – Maersk Group in 1940. When Denmark was occupied by Germany during World War II Møller went into exile in the United States and ran the family business from New York until his return to Denmark in 1947. Møller became CEO and chairman on his father’s death in 1965. In 1970, Møller became the first non-American member of the board of IBM, a position he held until 1984.

Møller stepped down as CEO in 1993 in favour of Jess Søderberg, but stayed on as chairman of the board until 2003 when – age 90 – he retired completely.

He personally controlled a substantial portion of the company’s shares until his death. He was generally considered one of the most respected industrialists in Denmark, and was admired by many.

In 1962, A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S was granted concession to survey and exploit oil and natural gas resources from The North Sea in Denmark, rendering a monopoly-like status to Mærsk.

Through A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond for general purposes, a wealthy, family-controlled foundation, Møller donated the Copenhagen Opera House that finished in 2005.

It is situated directly across the harbour from the royal residence, Amalienborg Palace, and within sight of his Mærsk headquarters. In the same area, Møller donated Amaliehaven, a park between the Palace and the harbour in the 1980s.

reThe Copenhagen Opera House was donated through the Maersk foundation as a gift to Copenhagen and its residents.

(Finished 2005, Architect: Henning Larsen)

The location of the Opera House begins to tell a different story. It sits right across the royal residence,. It can be argued that he put himself on the same level as the monarchy (the highest command in the Denmark). This creates an unbalanced situation between the people and the monarchy because the people is divided to the Elite - who can afford to use this gift and the bourgeoisie - who cant.

As the mechanical bird in the fairytale is worn-out do to overuse, the same thing happened with the Opera House. Maersk provided an empty shell from a currency created by extracting precious resources from nature which destroys the earth and is responsible for rapid climate change.

This shell operates from the outside as it needs money for maintenance and spectators for the shows. As a result of this, the shell sits empty most of the time.

With Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller as my client, I will as an architect create a alternative proposal to the Opera House. The project is therefore made as a retrospective vision. Imaging this:

Mr. Maersk sits in his office with two possible project investments.

1. The Opera house2. This Project

He can only choose one. The aim is to give him the opportunity to create a positive future.

A future that represents FREEDOM, COMMUNITY AND EQUALITY and thereby leave behind a sustainable legacy.

Through the fairytale analysis of Copenhagen it was clear that Christiania has the most potential to be developed with necessary.

It is also a chance for Christiania itself to secure their status as a Freetown and get an essential function in the community that benefits all the residents in Copenhagen.

The next couple of pages show two timeines for Christiania.

First what really happened and after taht, my constructed reallity - the after effects of the MAERSK PLAN.

Through TOLERANCE - we will succeed.

There are many important specific and community functional facilities/characters within the old defensive wall that defines central Copenhagen. These characters are interesting as they depend on each-other to function.

Specific characters include:

1. Amalienborg - (Royal axe / Equality)

2 . Old defensive wall + moat - Green belt / infrastructure

3. Kastellet - Ministry of defence

4. Lynetten - Wastewater treatment

5. Un City - Global contact

6. Christiansborg - Political impact

7. Town hall - National romance

There is different ways of handling a problem, you can make a fix or make it right.

In terms of climate adaptation, for the expectation of sea-level rise and increasing pollution as two of the crucial - one way is to protect the city with another ring from the outside. Introducing a new part to the city for great expansion potential. The other way is to make the adaptation from the inside.

Climate adaptation strategy : FROM OUTSIDE

Pro’s:This strategy has the benefit of introducing a potential expansion to city development. New housing and business to cope with the increase in population.

Con’sIf the problem is handled from the outside, their will be a distance between the problem and the people in the city. It is the people that need to change their ways if we want a chance against climate change. As “user involvement” is considered as a major issue, we must find a way to actively use the people as a resource in the fight against climate change. This strategy will not have contact to the people, therefore they will not change their behaviours, neither contribute.

Climate adaptation strategy : FROM OUTSIDE

Pro’s:

The direct physical and visual link to the problem at hand, is the only way we can provoke a change in the behaviour patterns of the citizens.(This will be a crucial point against climate change)

By dragging the defensive strategy inside the city, we can make it a more efficient system by combining the new infrastructure with other relevant issues. This does not exclude the possibility of city expansion, but simply demands another approach of resilience. As an ecosystem services provider, the infrastructure can create the opportunity to make a lopped ecosystem of crossing functions. Creating a better relationship between nature, people and industry.

Con’s

The inhabitants of the city must TOLERATE (one of the core values this project is trying to protect) the adaptation and adaptation of a function that benefits all, and demands a joint effort.

The project follows this strategy and is made from the inside out!

1. As Christiania represents the positive future, the plan aims to expand the function of the Free community to play a active part in the society of Copenhagen.

In order to protect the Danish core values (physical = Christiania) we need to make our city climate proof.

2.A resilient system needs to be efficient and the best way to ensure efficiency is to connect many co-working functions in a good foundation.

3.By connecting all the characters with a revitalisation of the defensive wall we can protect the city and the core values of the Danish civilisation .

Adaptation involves solutions being found in all aspects of the urban environment that make it possible to alleviate the system and make it more resilient.

The MANIFEST is created through the program and with great influence from the original objectives of Christiania. (index #4)

Cities worldwide are confronting challenging scenarios due to densification, impact of climate change, globalization in marketing, changing technologies, computerized living, and economic interaction which demands dynamic transformation capabilities of the existing urban typology.

This phenomenon that characterizes the growth of the city has the potential to promote and establish essential infrastructure by implementing a series of necessary contextual networks/strategies in order to achieve environmentally positive outcomes and thereby leave behind a sustainable legacy.

In order to do so, the “New capital of against climate change” provides a series of flexible processes that is responsive to the patterns of social, environmental and economic layers of living connected in between different neighbourhoods which beneficially engages the communities and boost their natural resources.

This revitalization of Copenhagen is an attempt to visualize the potential for the Danish capital to expand its role as a city centre to include new urban intensification leveraging, recent technological strategies, conceptual interactive methods and iconic typologies to develop a city centre that has the capacity to be efficient, systematic and adaptive.

The manifest consists of 6 strategies

Des

Man

ifes

t

Page 31: Masterthesis 2015 - The Fairy Tale Of Maersk

1: URBAN TYPOLOGY

A. Mixed use stations (centers/plaza/etc)B. Climate safe residential (alternative living)

- Community designed/built network, Intensification/connected infrastructure, Urban growth/integrating existing buildings (making them green), Harvesting/Food

production

2: DYNAMIC “climate adaptive” LANDSCAPE (GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE)

The green belt that combines the strategies- Integrate existing green landscapes with the new infrastructure to make the

relation with the system and the city respond quickly and receptive. - Storm flood protection, sea level rise compromiser

3: FOOD SUSTAINABILITY (FOOD BANK)

Agricultural activities will spread in the city centers for local production- contribute to local economy and sustainability, provide social and environmental

benefits

4: ENERGY EFFICIENCY + (WATER BANK)

Biological wastewater treatment process, Insect farm, bio burner.Production of clean water (WATER BANK)

- Hydro powered public transport along green infrastructure, Artificial costal reef from old mAersk containers (can provide structural base for

new city development + wave protection + coral reef for aqua culture)

5: MATERIAL REUSE (FACTORY)

Reduce the volume of waste through improved design - Encourage reuse, etc

Conscripts create prototypes of infrastructure and designs for deconstruction through

component reuse, Reversible construction, (Building scale),These elements is used to build up the infrastructure and facilities. The tectonic

aesthetics therefor become a historic container for the cultural heritage that provides social security through the concept of mouth to mouth storytelling.

6: SUSTAINABLE CONSRIPTION

Training the civilization to adapt their ways of living accordingly to climate change.

“Everyone must get their hands dirty and contribute to the society”- Recycling/Production (making components of infrastructure),

waste recycling/energy production, Mess Hall (Opera house site)

- Knowledge/Training (teaching/training centers, alternative living/animal farming/agriculture/accommodation/etc)

Incorporating a green infrastructure into the city will make the city less vulnerable to extreme rainfall, drought and heat stress. Climate change adaptation provides a multitude of opportunities to strengthen the economy of the city, to improve the living environment of neighbourhoods and districts, to increase biodiversity in the city and to encourage the people in Copenhagen to become involved and actively participate in society. This ‘green adaptation’ will simultaneously make our surroundings more attractive and become the motor for green growth.

Page 34: Masterthesis 2015 - The Fairy Tale Of Maersk

Since its opening in 1980 - Lynetten has treated the wastewater from Copenhagen. It covers an area of 76 km2 with 535.000 residents, treating over 100 mio. cubic meter of wastewater a year.

It costs 6,29 Dkr to treat one single m3 of wastewater and all of this is thrown out into Øresund.

Instead of thinking about wastewater as waste, we can transform it into a highly valuable resource.

The purification system produces clean drinking water for ca. 1.369.863,00 people a year based on a average European user of 200 litres pr pay.

With optimization of the current use of our fresh water supply, the aim is to lower the average use to half.

This would make it possible for THE MAERSK PLAN to provide enough fresh water to all residents in Copenhagen in the future, with the current population increase.

The green infrastructure becomes “A SUSTAINABLE LABORATORY OF ALTERNATIVE LIVING”. It functions as a super-nature and ecosystem services provider for Copenhagen to enable a more circular self sustaining system. It helps treating wastewater into drinkable water and uses it for food and energy production which it gives back both locally and globally.

Public interaction creates profitable recreational plazas spread out across the urban field. With by-products being locally produced resources - Cph will obtain a optimized resilience.

International waste is imported through the trade connection infrastructure of MAERSK SHIPPING and back to “THE MAERSK PLAN” in Copenhagen (Denmark). The waste gets treated in various stages that includes analyse and storage of usable pieces and energy production from rest material. “THE FACTORY” use pieces from the stored waste inventory to manufacture prototype components of infrastructure.

These components are then being sent out (as elements of knowledge) in the world to show how communities can create essential facilities from waste materials in a sustainable process to help the communities cope with challenges of climate change.

To make this system happen, MAERSK donates components from its shipping and oil business. These get reconstructed to form the framework of the MAERSK PLAN, encapsulating all commodities and functions of the system.

This creates a circular network that spreads out into the surrounding neighbourhoods:

From circular neighbourhoods to circular city. With the neighbourhoods connected, they form a looping green belt that enables a circular economy with focus on recycling and resilience.

The MAERSK PLAN connects Copenhagen.

It provides an infrastructure that will combine the future developments with the existing heart of Copenhagen.

As a Green Belt it improves the relationship between the people, the nature and the necessary man-made industry for adapting Copenhagen accordantly to climate changes in the future.

To be able to put all the pieces of the story together, I wanted to use the fairytale as the tool for communication.

By projecting the project through H.C. Andersen, I am using him as the architect of the project. In this way I could hold on to the poetic references and keep the flavour of the imaginary as the foundation. H.C Andersen had a thing for cutting small silhouette, so that determined the style and tools for me to finish the fairytale in an analogue fashion.

The result is a 900x80 cm long drawing made as the illustration to the written fairytale. To be able to handle such a piece of paper, I needed to build the drawing table - followed by a lot of cutting and drawing, by hand off course.

To supplement this fairytale is a Index Register, which consists of an archive of research, drawings and thoughts - the foundation of the process to create what in the end came to be known as - THE FAIRYTALE OF MAERSK .

You can find the Index Register on this link:

Or scan it with any QR scanner:(Dropbox required)

The project will be presented as “THE FAIRY TALE OF MAERSK” told through the working table of H. C. Andersen as the architect.

The story will be informed by a 10 by 1 meter drawing as H.C. Andersens work.
