Loving Father, You sent St. Francis Xavier to preach to

the nations. You call us also to be missionaries in our

you for blessing us with a Parish and a School. May we

(available by all entrances. One per family please) Marriage Group: Amoris Laetitia (On Love in the Family). Call the church

office for information.

Begin your Lent with Prayer! First Friday – Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (silent prayer) from

2:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the Chapel. Jesus asked his disciples, “Could you not watch one hour with me?”

First Saturday Mass. March 4 at 8:45 a.m. in the Chapel

Stations of the Cross

Fridays of Lent at 7:00 pm in the main church.

Consider coming to one or all of our daily masses! Mon and Tues at 7:00 a.m.

Wed. at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Thu and Fri at 7:00 a.m.

Fast and Abstinence. All Fridays are days of abstinence (no meat). Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence

for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of absti-

nence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are

obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to

eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to

a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon

members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. (This year the

GA bishops have lifted the abstinence on March 17 for St. Patrick’s Day).

Fish Fry!

During Lent the Knights of Columbus will offer a Fish Fry in Xavier Hall each Friday from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Meals will consist of fried fish, coleslaw, hush puppies and iced tea. The cost is $8 per plate or $25 for a family of four. The youth group will sell dessert. Our first dates will be Friday March 3,10,17. Stations of the Cross will begin in the church at 7:00 pm.

Here we go!

On Wednesday we will enter into the Lenten journey. Symbolically, we will go out

into the desert for 40 days as our Lord did and open our hearts to the Father. A common

question for Lent is, “What are you giving up this year?” It’s a logical question since we

are called to pray, fast and give alms over Lent but perhaps it is not the best starting point.

We can turn to St. Ignatius of Loyola for a starting point. In his Spiritual Exercises he

notes our purpose, "Man is created to praise God, reverence God, serve God and by means

of that to save his soul…” Ignatius notes that we must let God shape us in the way that is

best. He calls this holy indifference. This is not an attitude of not caring but rather of letting

God work in my soul in the way He knows best. For example, if we were to draw up our

own life story we might choose to be beautiful/handsome, wealthy and healthy. But what if

in having all these things we became self-sufficient and forgot about God? This would be

the greatest tragedy – to lose our soul.

So by the principle of holy indifference St. Ignatius proposes, “Therefore, we must

make ourselves indifferent to all created things, as far as we are allowed by free choice and

are not under any prohibition. Consequently, as far as we are concerned, we should not

prefer health to sickness, riches to poverty, honor to dishonor, a long life to a short. The

same holds for all other things.” (Spiritual Exercises # 23). With this principle we seek to

let God shape us in the way he knows best. Isn’t true that sometimes our greatest spiritual

growth comes through our suffering? Our times of illness, financial setback, relationship

problems can be times of great growth.

This Lent let us remember that we were created to praise, reverence and serve God

and by this means save our soul. Let us ask is there any created thing that is holding me

back from this goal? It could be an improper relationship, time on the computer, pornogra-

phy, wasted time with movies/TV, video gaming, social media, alcohol, drugs, an obsession

with work, laziness, lack of prayer, anger, jealousy. This week ask the Holy Spirit to point

out one or two areas in your life that need to change. Ask God over these 40 days to help

shape your soul in the way He knows best.

This Lent let us have the courage of our blessed Mother who told the Archangel Ga-

briel, “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your

will.” (Lk. 1: 38). May God’s will be done in our lives this Lent and may we praise, rever-

ence and serve God and by this means save our soul.

Please consider bringing a canned good to mass

next week. Especially helpful are pop-top cans

that people can open without an opener. Meats,

tuna fish and peanut butter are good protein

items. Thank you for helping those in need!

This September we will begin Financial Peace

University with Dave Ramsey. It is a course that

helps with financial planning and peace. If you

would be interested please contact Ann at the

office at 265-3249 or [email protected].

Since St. Patrick’s Day this year occurs during

Lent and on a Friday, the Georgia bishops

have lifted the obligation to abstain from

meat and meat products on Friday March 17.

During Lent we will offer the Dynamic Catholic book Resisting

Happiness. If you would interested in leading a small study

group on a Sunday, weekday or weeknight please contact

Ann at the office at 265-3249 or [email protected].

We will then publish a list of meeting times.

Bishop's Annual Appeal 2017

Thanks to all who have made their 2017 Bishop's Annual Appeal contribution.

Thus far we have collected $10,906 of our 50,000 total. We are off to a good start!

You might not be surprised to learn that CRS Rice

Bowl is encouraging us to use these upcoming 40

days of Lent to reflect on what it means to encoun-

ter ourselves, our neighbors and our God anew.

But what might surprise you is that Pope Francis

himself has asked Catholics around the world to

participate in programs like CRS Rice Bowl to do

exactly that: to build a culture of encounter!

Rice bowls are available at all the exits. If you

want to participate, please pick up yours and start

saving. Boxes will be available for drop off at the

end of the 40 days.

OVER 54 PARISHIONERS VOLUNTEER

February 26, 2017 - 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Matthew 6:27-28 Jesus tells us today, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” May we see ourselves as stewards of what God has shared with us. May we pray about how to best use our resources to build up the kingdom of God!
