Usually, we have someone rush up to Jesus with great faith and enthusiasm, pleading to be healed themselves or trying to con- vince Jesus to help a family member or a friend. However, in today’s Gospel, as Jesus and his disciples pass a blind man on their journey, the disciples ask a question, reflecting a widely held belief in the Ancient World: Was this man is blind on account of his own sin or the sins of his parents? Without the blind man even says a word to Jesus, before he knows what is happening, Jesus is spitting on some clay, spreading that mixture on the man’s eyes, and telling him to go wash in a pool in order to be healed. We don’t know how much the blind man knew about Jesus before this encounter, but I ‘m sure this en- counter fueled his curiosity. Jesus uses this healing as an opportunity for God to manifest his saving power to challenge the faith not only of the blind man, but also the faith every- one who witnessed this healing. The blind man was restored to sight both spiritually and physically; he is able to final- ly say: “I do believe, Lord.” Yet the Pharisees, with their many questions and their con- tinued spiritual blindness, cannot make such a statement of belief. They cannot even come close to the faith of the blind man. The Pharisees can see a lot of things, they have a lot of knowledge and are very intelligent in a lot of ways, but they certainly cannot see through the lens of faith. Have you ever had trouble seeing something that was there all the time? Sometimes we are so distracted or overwhelmed by other things on our jour- ney. Sometimes, we start off on our driveway and we start driving on autopilot toward our place of work, only to realize, no, it is not even a work day, and we should be driving in another direction. It might be that way on our journey of faith – we could be on auto- pilot cruising in one certain direction without questioning it or realizing we should be go- ing somewhere else. Or, we are looking for something specific, for something to point us in the right direction, and we just can’t see it. Healed by Jesus, the blind man was able to overcome what was making him both physically and spiritually blind. The waters of baptism cleansed the blind man. We our- selves are cleansed by the waters of our baptism. There might be something keeping us from seeing the signpost God has put out for us on our Lenten journey. The Pharisees tried to pull the blind man back into the darkness, but he resisted. By our Lenten disci- plines and the promises we made to God, we are renewed and refreshed in our faith.

Fourth Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018

From the very beginning of today’s Gospel, this story of healing strikes us as being

different than other such stories in the Gospels. Usually, we have someone rush up to Jesus with great faith and enthusiasm, pleading to be healed themselves or trying to con-

vince Jesus to help a family member or a friend. However, in today’s Gospel, as Jesus and his disciples pass a blind man on their journey, the disciples ask a question, reflecting a

widely held belief in the Ancient World: Was this man is blind on account of his own sin or the sins of his parents? Without the blind man even says a word to Jesus, before he

knows what is happening, Jesus is spitting on some clay, spreading that mixture on the man’s eyes, and telling him to go wash in a pool in order to be healed. We don’t know

how much the blind man knew about Jesus before this encounter, but I ‘m sure this en-

counter fueled his curiosity. Jesus uses this healing as an opportunity for God to manifest his saving power to challenge the faith not only of the blind man, but also the faith every-

one who witnessed this healing.

The blind man was restored to sight both spiritually and physically; he is able to final-

ly say: “I do believe, Lord.” Yet the Pharisees, with their many questions and their con-tinued spiritual blindness, cannot make such a statement of belief. They cannot even

come close to the faith of the blind man. The Pharisees can see a lot of things, they have a lot of knowledge and are very intelligent in a lot of ways, but they certainly cannot see

through the lens of faith. Have you ever had trouble seeing something that was there all

the time? Sometimes we are so distracted or overwhelmed by other things on our jour-ney. Sometimes, we start off on our driveway and we start driving on autopilot toward

our place of work, only to realize, no, it is not even a work day, and we should be driving in another direction. It might be that way on our journey of faith – we could be on auto-

pilot cruising in one certain direction without questioning it or realizing we should be go-ing somewhere else. Or, we are looking for something specific, for something to point us

in the right direction, and we just can’t see it.

Healed by Jesus, the blind man was able to overcome what was making him both

physically and spiritually blind. The waters of baptism cleansed the blind man. We our-selves are cleansed by the waters of our baptism. There might be something keeping us from seeing the signpost God has put out for us on our Lenten journey. The Pharisees

tried to pull the blind man back into the darkness, but he resisted. By our Lenten disci-plines and the promises we made to God, we are renewed and refreshed in our faith.

When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of wa-ter, He opened the door for a life changing relationship with

Him. Scripture says her testimony drew many others to Him

as well. We, too, must be ready to respond whenever and wherever the Lord speaks to us and be prepared for it to

change our lives!

Recently, we pastors in the Dio-cese of Jackson received a letter from Bishop Kopacz, stating his

support for the Knights of Columbus and encouraging us pastors to promote membership in the Knights. We are blessed here at St Jude to have a very active, enthusiastic council of the Knights of Columbus, a council that adds so much to the life our parish. I want to encourage member-ship in the Knights, while also encouraging all men who are members in our parish to be active in their membership. In order to encourage participation in the Knights and to reach out to the families of Knights in our parish, the Knights will host an afternoon when Knights and their families will come together for an afternoon of games in conjunction with their April meeting. More information will be announced for this event.

Help needed to Decorate

We need your help to prepare for Holy Week and Easter! We

will be decorating Holy Thursday, March 29th at 10:00

am; Holy Saturday, March 31st at 9:00 am. If you will be

able to help contact Rhonda in the office by email at [email protected]. Many hands make

light work! We will need men to help set up the fire pot, and the Flower Guild and Art and Envi-

ronment to help with flowers and other decorations.

Why pray for vocations?

Reason #1

We need more priests and religious!

The Church’s need for priests is growing. As priests die and retire, not enough men are being or-

dained to replace them. Meanwhile, the Catholic population is growing. This leads to painful parish

closings, mergers, and over-worked priests. Likewise, the number of religious sisters has plummet-

ed by nearly 70% in the past 50 years, which means fewer sisters in schools, hospitals, and other

critical Catholic missions.

Reason #2

We need the Eucharist

“Considering that the Eucharist is the greatest gift our Lord gives to his Church, we must ask for

priests since the priesthood is a gift for the Church. We must pray insistently for this gift. We must

ask for it on our knees.” ~ Pope John Paul II

Reason #3

“Prayer is the “one thing necessary”

“I often think that prayer–the unum necessarium–-is the one aspect of vocations work which we

tend to forget or to undervalue.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Reason #4

Prayer works!

“If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever

we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him.” ~ 1 John 5:14-15

Vianney Vocations—Invisible Monastery

For the

First Communion Class

As a special gift to our First Communion Class, we are asking all parishioners to

write a note to at least one of the children in their “Will You Pray for Me?” Spir-

itual Bouquet Keepsake Book. This is a beautiful way for their church family and

friends to share prayers for each First Communicant.

The books will be in the Chapel. Choose a book (or books) and write a

note indicating the number and types of prayers you wish to offer (for

example: Three Our Father’s, or 5 Glory Be’s or One Rosary), along with any

additional messages you would like to include. Please remember to print.

Please stop by the chapel anytime to share a prayer with our First Communion

Class. The books will be available until May 5th.
