Pastor’s Points by Father Flynn As our liturgical season of Easter draws to a close we
should take some time to re-read the Scripture readings
we’ve heard throughout these past several weeks be-
cause they contain the essential message of our salva-
tion first preached by the Apostles following Jesus’ as-
cension to heaven. It’s what we call the “Kerygma”,
(derived from the Greek word meaning “Proclamation”
or “preaching”) and its importance to us as Catholic
Christians cannot be overstated. What the Apostles
preached to the Jews in Jerusalem was simple and
pretty much to the point:
“We are lost in sin and God sent Jesus Christ His only Son,
the Messiah promised in the Old Testament, who died to
set us free and offer a new life in Him. Christ was born,
lived, ministered to and died for us and rose from the
dead in fulfillment of the prophesies and covenants of
the Old Testament. He ascended to His Father where He
sits at His right hand and He calls all to Himself through His
Church requiring from us a response, namely that we
should repent of our sins, accept baptism in the Trinity
and live our lives as He showed us while on earth. He left
us with His promise to send the Spirit, which promise He
fulfilled and that same Spirit is the sign of Christ’s present
power and glory in His Church. He will return again in
glory at the end of time.”
This message is found in the eight (8) so-called “Kerygma
Sermons” in the Acts of the Apostles which have been in
the readings of Mass and Liturgy of the hours during the
weeks of the Easter Season. You can find them in Acts
2:14-36, 3:12-26, 4:8-12, 5:29-32, 10: 34-43, 13: 16-41, 14:15-
17, and 17: 22-31.
The message of the Kerygma is significant because it
represents all the basic truths of our salvation story as
Catholic Christians and we should know it not just in our
minds but in our hearts as well. We need to articulate
this simple message to anyone who might ask us the
question: “What do you believe as a Catholic?” Now of
course you may know much more than the basics of our
beliefs but at the very least this should be the foundation
for everything else. Jesus gave us the commission: “Go
into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole
creation.” (Mk 16:15). He gave it to ALL of us…not just
priests and missionaries…ALL of us. In order to fulfill our
responsibility to evangelize we must have the founda-
tions of our faith written in our hearts so that our appeal
to others is sincere and heartfelt. The fourth sign of a Dy-
namic Catholic is EVANGELIZATION. If you’re not com-
fortable with your own understanding of the Kerygma
begin praying today for a deeper understanding and re-
read the sermons in Acts until you feel it in your
heart. God bless you for all you do for our parish com-
munity. Continue to pray for me as I do for you and for
more vocations. Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms!
We are excited to begin posting Fr. Flynn’s homilies
occasionally to the website, in an effort to share his
message beyond the church. Follow our St. Francis of
Assisi SoundCloud for updates. Share these podcasts
with your friends and family. Help spread the lessons
and joy of the Good News that Fr. Flynn shares with us
each week!

For over 25 years local Serra Clubs have hosted what's
called the Vocation Awareness Program or VAP. This event is a
weekend of discernment for young women and men 18
through 40 years old who think they might have a call to serve
God as a priest or religious order person. The event is set for
June 26-28. It takes place at the University of Dallas in Ir-
ving. Priests and religious men and women consult with atten-
dees to help discern a vocation. See: www.vapinfo.org. If you
are interested, the web site tells you how to proceed. You must
apply and be accepted to attend the program. There is no
charge for the live-in weekend. Meals and lodging are pro-
vided free and there is never any commitment asked or ex-
pected.
Vocation View As the Father has loved me so I have loved you. Live on in my
love. Bask in the love of God; ask how to respond. (John 15:9-17)
