Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving
FASTING – Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are
obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition,
all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on
Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting
as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full
meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at
breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending on
when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.
PRAYER – Come to the Stations of the Cross, Adorations and
other activities.
ALMSGIVING–Participate in the Parish Operation RICE BOWL
Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturday 3:30-4:30PM
Friday Stations of the Cross:
Stations of the Cross at 7:00PM-Church
Come and Meditate the Passion of Jesus!
Knights of Columbus Fish Fry Fridays during Lent-MPR
Pastor’s Points from Father Flynn With the Lenten season only a few weeks away it’s a good
idea to examine what this beautiful season in our Church’s
calendar is all about. You know I love history so let’s look at
some of the history of this special time in our liturgical year.
The word itself “Lent” is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word
meaning ‘spring’, but it’s Latin equivalent is “Quadragesima”
meaning ‘fortieth’, as in the ‘fortieth day before Easter’. We
shouldn’t ignore the significance of the number “40” in our
religious history. Moses stayed on Mt. Sinai “with the Lord 40
days and 40 nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water.”(Ex
34:28); Elijah “Arose, ate and drank, and went in the strength
of that food 40 days and 40 nights to Horeb, the Mount of
God” (1 Kgs 19:8); and most importantly, following His baptism
by John and before He began His public ministry, Jesus
“...fasted 40 days and 40 nights…” (Mt 4:2) in the wilderness.
As early as the 3rd Century there is evidence of some type of
preparation for Easter involving fasting and prayer during the
preceding six weeks. Following the ‘legalization’ of Christian-
ity in 313 A.D. the Council of Nicea set up the ‘formula’ for
standardizing how and when the Lenten season would be
observed that is still practiced today. Fasting and abstinence
are governed by the Church’s precept requiring fasting (only
one full meal in the day and smaller sustaining snacks to
maintain strength) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday,
along with abstinence from meat on all Fridays throughout
the season. Aside from what the Church’s requirements are
for all Catholics during the Lent, observance of which are op-
portunities for grace, I believe those voluntary acts of Catho-
lics performed faithfully throughout the season are even
greater opportunities for blessings and graces, not to mention
the potential for initiating a personal behavior that could be-
come a grace-generating habit such as attending Mass dur-
ing the week or making a weekly holy hour in adoration be-
fore the Blessed Sacrament. These and other actions are spiri-
tual works that build up a renewal and reinforcement of our
faith. The Death and Resurrection of Jesus our Savior are the
culmination of the greatest act of love ever performed in the
history of mankind and this creation. In this sacred time we
should spend some time alone in the ‘classroom of silence’ as
Matthew Kelly calls it in his books, to think about how awe-
some is the perfect act of love that Jesus Christ performed for
us. We are all sinners and in need of repentance in order to
be able to qualify ourselves worthy of the redemptive act
done by Jesus for us. Even though His death opened the
gates of heaven for us we still are imperfect in how we live
our lives and because of our concupiscence remain suscepti-
ble to sin and therefore we need to repent, do penance, re-
new our faith and work hard to remain ‘eligible’ to fully enjoy
the eternal reward that God has intended for us from the be-
ginning. So, I do urge you to ‘give up something’ for Lent, but
I strongly urge you to ‘do something bigger/better’ for Lent as
well. If everyone in our parish community just prayed 5 more
minutes every day throughout the Lenten season our parish
“holiness quotient” would rise considerably and we’d all be
better for it! Please continue to pray for me, the deacons
and everyone in the parish that we all may be greatly blessed
in this beautiful season of penance, repentance and salva-
tion through the death and resurrection of our Lord and Sav-
ior Jesus Christ!
