  • Dear Parishioners,

“Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum” is Latin for “Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.”

These words are the start of Psalm 132 and sing of God’s remembrance of his promises to his servant David. It is also the start of an anthem which was sung regularly when seminarians at Cathedral College stood for special occasions and began, “Ecce quam bonum . . .” It was inspiring and uplifting to hear the voices of men in unison and express the beauty and value of fraternity as a seminary community with the dream and possibility of someday serving with each other as priests of God.

Since the start of the year a number of priests have died. Monsignor Gerry Arella and Monsignor James Hunt were neighbors of ours who as senior priests lived at the Bishop Mugavero Residence in Douglaston. They served the diocese in different ways as pastors, episcopal vicars and judicial vicars. Father Joseph Wizeman served as parochial vicar in Mary’s Nativity Parish, Flushing for many years. Monsignor Austin Bennett worked in various capacities including diocesan director of finance, special assistant to the Bishop and member of the Diocesan Curia.

More recently our neighboring parish, Saint Gregory the Great, Bellerose suffered the unexpected death of Father Bill Dulaney who was buried the day after his 69th birthday. Father Bill was loved and admired by all the parishioners and those he met while riding his bicycle.

And again, as reported in this week’s THE TABLET, Monsignor John Brown, died after a brief illness and soon after his 60th birthday. Msgr. Brown was pastor of Father Jeremy’s home parish in Brooklyn, St. Thomas Aquinas on Flatbush Avenue. He served the diocese as parochial vicar, pastor, chancellor, director of the Office of Clergy Personnel and was appointed as a dean a few months ago.

I recall many happy memories of this friendly young man and dedicated priest. We were together in high school (Cathedral Prep), college (Cathedral College), and seminary (North American College.) John played basketball and was a star player. He was devoted to his studies and made time to talk and help fellow seminarians. John was caring and conscientious of priests’ needs and always looked out for their welfare and happiness. It was John who said I should go as pastor to Saint Clare’s in Rosedale (“a perfect match”) and he was right!

The passing of these six dedicated priests leaves a sorrowful gap in our Brooklyn clergy and a particular break in the chain of fraternity shared among priests. Please pray for the souls of these holy men and may comfort come to their family members, and to us as priests and parishioners who knew and loved them all.

“Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum.”
