GROUNDED IN 300 YEARS OF INNOVATION

The William & Mary brand is synonymous with intelligent, motivated students, close interaction with expert faculty, and successful, influential careers at top companies such as DeLoitte, IBM, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and the Federal Reserve.

In much the same way that Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries took the best political ideas in history and shaped them into one of the world’s greatest acts of civic innovation, the Mason School’s Full-Time MBA takes the foundational principles of finance, marketing, management, operations, and entrepreneurship and helps students shape them into rewarding, innovative careers. And with the William & Mary name on your résumé, you’ll be recognized as a member of a uniquely talented and capable community of business leaders.

OUR CURRICULUM

William & Mary has a 300-year track record of providing cutting edge research and thought leadership while remaining true to its core commitment to teaching. The Mason School is part of that tradition. We constantly evaluate and adjust our curriculum to reflect the latest trends in business thought and to prepare our students for the most dynamic emerging business careers. Whether it’s through our concentrations or the many other opportunities Mason provides, the Mason

MBA will give you the tools you need to shape your own future and to transform the business world at large.

OUR FACULTY

An outstanding teaching faculty has been the hallmark of a William & Mary education since our founding. It’s what drew revolutionaries like Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe to William & Mary in the 18th century, and it continues to attract the best and brightest students today. Thanks to the quality of their scholarship and commitment to teaching, Mason School’s business faculty is consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation by the Princeton Review and gets an A+ from Businessweek. And because Mason’s classes are small compared to other business schools, you’ll have exceptional access to and attention from these leading business thinkers.

While it offers a great experience and an impressive credential, earning a Mason MBA shouldn’t be an end in itself. Instead, it should be the means—an unparalleled means—to advancing your career and achieving your professional goals. Mason understands this, and has taken the revolutionary step of putting professional development at the heart of the experience.

EXECUTIVE MENTORSHIP

Executive Partners are an energetic team of active and retired business leaders representing more than 20 different industries who will be your own personal business coach to mentor you throughout your Mason School experience. Your EP will meet with you one on one to offer practical critiques and help you hone your leadership and interpersonal skills. They’ll be a sounding board for your ideas and give you inside advice on what companies look for when they hire. Most Mason graduates maintain lifelong relationships with their Executive Partners, who become the cornerstone of a robust professional network.

A CAREER SERVICES CURRICULUMDeveloping a business strategy, structuring a deal and leading teams are skills. So is finding and landing the right job. That’s why our Career Management Center has integrated a complete career planning and development program directly into the Mason MBA curriculum. Your career planning begins with web-based, pre-program conferences and a set of self-assessment tools that you complete before you even come to campus. During the first year, you’ll participate in a comprehensive suite of classes, workshops and one-on-one meetings with our career counselors who will help you understand and be able to articulate your personal brand. Second year programming focuses on utilization of technology for job search, presentation and interview skills, as well as getting the most out of hands-on learning opportunities like our Career Acceleration Modules.

THERE’S A WORLD OF BUSINESS OUT THERE

It’s a fact. Every business is global. War and peace, weather and politics, economic development and cultural change can help or hinder everything from your access to new markets to the price you pay for energy or raw materials. So while a truly well-rounded business education should immerse you in the world of business, it should also immerse you in the world itself. Mason’s international opportunities will hone your competitive edge by expanding your knowledge and understanding of how differences in politics, environment and culture shape the many ways business gets done around the world. And the international members of our student body, who represent over 20 countries from around the world, ensure that a global perspective will be part of every classroom conversation.

GLOBAL IMMERSIONSMason’s Global Immersion trips aren’t business casual sightseeing tours, but for-credit, faculty-led explorations that take you deep into the cultural and economic climate of some of the world’s most dynamic markets such as South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Global Immersions are offered during winter and spring breaks, and no two are the same. Mason proposes destinations based on the business and geopolitical issues of the day and faculty expertise and connections

in-country. Students choose the final destination based on their shared interests. Briefing lectures and seminars will prepare you for the trip. During or after your country visit, you’ll process what you see and learn through a service or consulting project, followed by debriefing classes once you return home. The result is a transformative international experience that you can then translate into a concrete value proposition for future employers.

JUNTOS

Juntos are student-led discussion groups that get you thinking and talking about global issues while building your research and critical thinking skills. You and your peers will form project teams. Then you’ll choose a topic you’re passionate about, such as clean water access, the European debt crisis or global hunger. Then you’ll develop a syllabus and action plan to cover the material. After researching and debating all sides of the issue, your team will present its findings and recommendations to the entire MBA class. Through Juntos, you’ll learn about business while exploring the world. You’ll also apply concepts you study in the classroom to current economic and geopolitical issues, and gain meaningful leadership and team-building experience.

The most effective business education is one that maximizes the connection between the curriculum and your particular goals and interests. While it’s imperative to have a sound grasp of business fundamentals—which are the focus of much of our first year curriculum—Mason offers several revolutionary opportunities that let you turn your MBA into a bridge to a specific career or industry.

CAREER ACCELERATION MODULESTake a deep dive into a particular business or industry with Mason’s Career Acceleration Modules (CAMs). Through corporate visits, case study analysis, consulting projects and other experiential learning techniques, CAMs let you test drive a number of career specialties. Each CAM is 7 weeks long, so you’ll complete two CAMs over the course of a semester. Current CAM offerings include: • Brand Management• Business to Business Marketing• Corporate Finance• Enterprise Engineering• Entrepreneurship• Healthcare• Real Estate

PATHS OF DISTINCTION (PoDS)Mason’s new Paths of Distinction—currently offered in Real Estate and the Health Sector—are the future of business education. For each program, we’ve taken the foundations of our MBA curriculum and merged them with specific courses of study designed in consultation with industry leaders who have also made a commitment to recruit new hires from each PoD class. Those same industry leaders have also committed to teaching several of the program specific electives, so you’ll know that the information you are getting is the most current and relevant to your professional goals. Admission to the PoDs is competitive, and applicants are selected by a committee of faculty and admissions professionals.

CONCENTRATIONSYou can also fine tune your MBA with one of Mason’s program concentrations, each of which targets a different emerging career:

• Business Analytics• Consulting• Corporate Finance• General Management• Entrepreneurship and Private Enterprise• Healthcare• Marketing• Operations & Supply Chain Management• Real Estate*

Employers are interested in more than what you know. They want to know what you can do. Mason offers a wealth of experiential learning opportunities that will help make real the concepts you learn in the classroom while giving you tangible business experience you can point to in a job interview.

BATTEN FUNDThe Batten Fund is a $500,000 Student-Managed Investment Fund that provides hands-on portfolio management and equity investing experience. As one of 17 carefully selected Batten Fund analysts, you’ll work with a designated portfolio manager to research and identify potential stock opportunities, choose one stock to research in depth, develop an investment thesis, complete a valuation analysis, then sell your idea to your fellow Batten analysts. Your Executive Partner will offer guidance throughout the project. You’ll also hear from a variety of professional stock analysts and portfolio managers who will visit campus as guest speakers.

FIELD CONSULTANCIESField Consultancies are your opportunity to do hands-on business consulting with some of the most talented minds

around—your classmates. Working with a Faculty Supervisor and an Executive Partner, your team will work as consultants charged with identifying, researching and proposing a solution for a real business problem faced by a major company in the mid-Atlantic region. Previous consultancies have worked with Smithfield Foods, Cox Communications, Riverside Health System, and Huntington Ingalls Industries. In the process, you’ll address management issues and develop a deeper understanding of the interdependence of functional areas. You might even land a job—many of our Field Consultancies result in post-MBA opportunities for our students.

CENTERSMason’s Alan B. Miller Center for Entrepreneurship sponsors business plan competitions, hosts presentations and networking events with some of the nation’s leading entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, and works one-on-one with students interested in starting their own businesses. The new Boehly Center for Excellence in Finance will act as a research and networking nexus between faculty, students, alumni and leaders in the finance industry.

It’s about making better leaders and businesspeople – not just for the sake of making money, but making a difference.
