MASON'S THURSDAY CONCERTS START WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BANDS Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Mason on Thursday evening, May 24, and enjoy the sounds of the Mason Middle School and Mason High School Jazz Bands on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn. The bands, under the direction of Amber McRay and Beth Bousfield, will play beginning at 6:00 p.m. in a free concert, hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Salon 130.

That evening, the MACC will be kicking off their fourteenth season of "Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts." Mason's summer series of live musical entertainment is presented by Independent Bank on eight select Thursday evenings this year. The free outdoor concerts take place at 6:00 p.m. on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn in downtown Mason on May 24, June 7 and 21, July 5 and 19, August 9 and 23, and September 13, weather permitting. Organizers have also set aside a rain date of August 30.

The Mason Optimist Club will be selling hot dogs, chips and pop nearby, so families can enjoy a picnic dinner during the concerts. Many concert-goers stop by restaurants and stores in Mason before and afterwards. "The Chamber hosting Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts again is a way to bring more fun and excitement to downtown Mason," said Beth Yeider of Independent Bank, chair of the committee organizing the concerts.

She is especially happy this year since most of the performers are returning for encore performances. "We thank our sponsors and volunteers and want to let folks know that we can bring these concerts to our visitors and residents only through their generosity and the assistance of the City of Mason and Ingham County," she added.

Two weeks after the first concert, the Mason Orchestral Society will be performing on Thursday, June 7, sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. The June 21 concert will feature local band Life Support Unplugged, sponsored by Dart Container Corporation. The Capital Sundogs will play on July 5, sponsored by Dart Bank. The Sea Cruisers, sponsored by Darrell's Market and Hardware, will play on July 19. On Thursday, August 9, sponsored by Commercial Bank Mason, the Backwoods Band will have the stage - back for their fourteenth straight year.

For the August 23 concert on the Courthouse lawn, sponsored by the Dart Container Corporation, the series will feature the Twilight Memories Big Band. The entertainment series concludes with the Mason High School Band on Thursday, September 13, led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School Cheer Squad will join them in the program sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. All concerts are weather permitting.

Can HVAC Upgrades Improve Worker Performance?

FROM: Consumers Energy

Are you getting a lot of 'too hot' or 'too cold' complaints from employees? Are more workers calling off sick? Do you see employees using personal appliances, such as fans and space heaters?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, it could mean your facility isn't as comfortable or healthy as it could be. Evidence suggests that heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system upgrades will not only reduce your energy bills but make your workplace happier and more productive.

Comfort and productivity: what the research says

A 2015 Harvard University study investigated the productivity and cost saving benefits of improved ventilation. The researchers found that doubling ventilation rates using an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system cost about $40 per employee while significantly reducing energy costs. That same ventilation changes increased worker performance by 8 percent, leading to a $6,500 increase in employee productivity each year.

Building temperatures also affect worker performance. A temperature of 68°F is often recommended to optimize energy savings, but how will that impact productivity? A U.S. Department of Energy study found worker performance increases at temperatures up to 72°F, with performance decreasing at temperatures above 73°F.

Take action

It's clear that HVAC system upgrades can provide your workplace with a breath of fresh air. Here's what you should do:

• Hire a qualified professional to clean and inspect your HVAC system each year to ensure efficient operation. • Ensure proper airflow. Make sure registers aren't covered by furniture or equipment.

• Consider installing ERV systems, which save energy by capturing up to 80 percent of the exhaust air and use it to heat or cool the incoming supply air.

• Install Wi-Fi enabled programmable thermostats to control building temperatures according to your operating scheduling, while optimizing savings and convenience.

If your rooftop unit, furnace or boiler is older or in need of major repairs, consider upgrading to an ENERGY STAR® certified heating or cooling unit. ENERGY STAR commercial HVAC systems are more efficient than standard models while still providing excellent performance. Other energy efficiency measures, such as adding insulation and sealing air leaks, can impact worker performance. Consider a facility energy assessment. A professional auditor can recommend the most effective measures to save energy and make your indoor environment more comfortable and productive.

Sarah Hillman | Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Sweetlees Boutique offers affordable fashion for all in Greater Lansing area

Cori Thackery always wanted to own a clothing shop. A place offering clothes that were both beautiful and trendy to women of all shapes and sizes. So, when she quit her job as a reading teacher, she decided to give the idea a whirl. And Sweetlees Boutique was born. At first, she ran the business online only, offering a selection of carefully curated items she sourced from all over the country. But soon enough the business was taking over her home, and space became an issue. Then there was the issue of customers who wanted to try things on before they made purchases. Thackery says she was constantly having to turn down requests because she wasn't comfortable inviting strangers into her house. It was time for a brick and mortar store. "I love Mason." Thackery says. "We live here, and so it just made sense to open the store here." And the decision has paid off. "The community has been so supportive of my business, it's been amazing. It's become more than I could ever imagine." Sweetlees Boutique offers a gorgeous array of clothing in a wide variety of sizes. "We carry all sizes because everybody should be able to look to look good, no matter what size they are." Thackery explains. And the models in her online store are a testament to this philosophy. Local women from the community, many of them moms, show off the Sweetlees collection in Thackery's flattering online pictures. But clothing isn't the only thing you'll find at Sweetlees. Thackery carries jewelry and other accessories, including Jenna Kator handbags - a Michigan native whose collection of purses and handbags are all names for Michigan locations (there's even an Old Town Lansing bag!) She also offers perfumes, lotions and candles with sassy names that make great gifts. The boutique opened in January in downtown Mason, and the formal ribbon cutting was held in March, by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. Source: Cori Thackery, Owner, Sweetlees Boutique

Over 2,000 student athletes will represent their schools in the unique event, and over 5,000 spectators and dozens of exhibitors are expected to also attend. MAiBA 2018 DRIVE CONTINUES

Members of the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce are asked to please agree to be a part of the MAiBA (an ad hoc committee of the Chamber's Hometown USA Committee) or a MAiBA supporter. This continuing cooperative effort goes a bit further than the Chamber's ongoing "Mason Values" campaign that encourages community members to shop, dine and live in the Mason area. Due to the nature of the local multiplier effect, this new effort focuses specifically on creating a specific positive image for locally owned independent businesses in the Mason area. Other area businesses and organizations that are not locally owned and independent may not be a part of MAiBA, but may choose to support this effort. The local multiplier effect refers to the greater local economic return generated by money spent at locally-owned independent businesses compared to other businesses. The effect is the greater boost to our local economy that results from businesses, owners, and employees spending more business revenue within the area. Typically, independent businesses recirculate locally a much greater percentage of their sales, income, and payments for expenses compared to other types of businesses. The four largest components of this increased local spending are: wages and benefits paid to local employees; goods and services purchased from other local businesses; profits that accrue to local owners; and taxes paid to local and state governments. For example, most independent businesses bank with locally owned banks, purchase some inventory from local manufacturers, advertise in local media, and hire local accountants, printers, lawyers, insurance agents, and repair people. Each fully participating MAiBA business will decide on their own what the appropriate level of financial contributions may be in any joint promotional campaigns among and for MAiBA participants (often using materials from AIMBA and similar groups). These campaigns would not be Chamber activities, but instead be similar to other endorsed optional joint promotional campaigns. Such business contributions to would not be made to the Chamber, but to any media outlets used in the promotions. See the 2018 MAiBA form in the last Mason in Motion printed MACC newsletter for more information. Ask for us to send you one by e-mail at [email protected].

Final Note: Continuing a 46-year tradition, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce publishes its "MASON in Motion" printed and mailed newsletter near the end of each month. This hard-copy newsletter has information about Chamber events and programs, new Chamber members, news from member businesses and organizations, and more - in a short four-page format. The several insert pages included in the newsletter each month are designed to be removed for easy sharing or posting within a business or organization. For this reason, the Chamber has decided to continue distributing this newsletter in the conventional manner with no opt-out. This also maintains value for limited advertising. Sponsorships that include a benefit of a newsletter insert are just $100 per insertion to reach 450 key decision-makers in the Mason area. This newsletter is mailed to all contact people for Chamber members, Chamber volunteers, and select stakeholders. A .pdf copy of the newsletter is also available to all the same day it is delivered by the post office at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org. Deadline is the 20th of the month for all submissions. Items are included as space is available and submissions are edited for space and consistency of the publication. Since August of 2006, the Chamber also publishes a mid-month "MASON in Motion UPDATE" newsletter electronically. This e-mailed newsletter is forwarded to all who have submitted their e-mail addresses to the Chamber, provided they are associated with a Chamber member, are a Chamber volunteer, or are a select stakeholder. A link to the archive on the website for the .pdf copies of the printed and mailed "MASON in Motion" newsletter is included in the UPDATE. A .pdf copy of this UPDATE newsletter is also available to all at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org under the "Newsletters" tab. Deadline is the 10th of the month for all UPDATE submissions. All items submitted are included, subject to minor editing for publication consistency. It is the intention of the Chamber to limit broadcast e-mails to those who have e-mail addresses submitted to the Chamber to 24 times per year at most. Of course, those who are Chamber leaders and volunteers get much more frequent information e-mailed to them.
