The children will join in with others from across the parish including some children from the College as well as other schools in our region. Archbishop Mark Coleridge will be in the Burleigh Heads parish to lead the Confirmation ceremony on Friday evening at St Benedict’s Church at Mudgeeraba. He will also be involved in masses across the parish over the weekend with two of them being ones where he will hand out communion for the first time to a number of our children. To have the Archdiocese’s chief faith leader here to confirm the children is very rare so this will help to make the ceremony all the more special for the children. Confirmation and Eucharist are the final two sacraments in what are known in the church as the Sacraments of Initiation. The first Sacrament of Initiation occurs when the children are baptized into the Catholic faith and these two sacraments complete their journey of growth into full members of the Catholic community. When the children make their first Eucharist they become full members in the body and blood of Christ’s life. They are then invited to renew this commitment through regular attendance at masses and through participation in the Eucharistic meal at communion. I would ask that you please keep these children and their families in your prayers over the next few days – it is a special time for them to become fully members of God’s community. We will commemorate 40 years of our being a primary school on this site. The school was established here following the development of Marymount College a few years earlier on this site. Previously the primary schooling had been held in Burleigh itself next to the old Infant Saviour church. The school was established here with Franciscan Order of Sisters helping to begin our school. Sr Elizabeth Prendegast was the original Principal. Our school has developed to what it is today and has changed dramatically with buildings being added along the way to cater for our growth. On Friday we will start the day with a mass celebrated by Fr Ken, our Parish Priest, in the Doyle Centre. Later in the day we will have a visit by His Grace, Archbishop Mark Coleridge, who will share some time with our staff and children. After our Morning Tea we will be conducting fun activities for all year levels on our ovals. The classes will be joining together with their ‘Buddy’ classes to enjoy these activities. Parents are most welcome to come along to our mass in the morning. This starts at 9.00am and should be concluded by 10.00am. Thanks for reading this week. I hope that you enjoy the rest of the week. Internet and Social Media Concerns that ALL parents need to know.

Did you know????34% of kids have friends online they’ve never met in person46% of kids have given out personal information to someone they’ve met online32% of all teens on the Internet say they have been a victim of cyberbullying29% of all social media users have a second ‘secret’ accountSocial Media Sites have a minimum age limit for users to register – Facebook - 13 yrs, Instagram - 13 yrs, MySpace - 14 yrs, Kik - 17 yrs!!

(Info from Family Online Safety Institute Worldwide Forums)

Every day at school we are contacted by parents regarding Internet and Social Media issues. Things that have happened at home, on weekends, or even late at night!

The Internet and Social Media Sites are not going to go away; they are and will continue to be a large part of our lives. So the best thing you can do is to EDUCATE your children, WORK with them, MONITOR their Internet usage, and be the person in control of their account.

If your child is on these sites then you need to parent them. You need to keep them safe! YOU need to be in charge of their account as the responsible adult.

As Parents you need to read and act on these 5 very important points when it comes to Social Media -

1. Ask for their password, or better still, you have the password for their account and check their account daily.2. Setup your own account and be a friend or follower of your children. This way you can see what is being posted.3. If they don’t agree to points one or two, then the decision is very simple - delete their account!4. Read what experts are saying about these sites, and if you still want your children to use them, make sure you put some boundaries and safety measures in place.5. Check what accounts your child has on Social Media. If they have Kik or Ask FM then I urge you to read these 2 links. You will be shocked at what these two very dangerous sites offer your children.

http://www.bewebsmart.com/internet-safety/is-kik-okay-for-kids/

http://www.hightechdad.com/2013/06/05/parents-be-warned-ask-fm-is-a-dangerous-deadly-social-site-for-teens-tweens/

“Children aged Under 13 years of age don’t have the mental, social or emotional capacity to handle all that happens on Social Media.” (Dr Michael Carr-Gregg)

REMEMBER YOU ARE THE PARENT, THEY ARE THE CHILDREN. ENSURE THEY GROW UP IN THEIR TIME, RATHER THAN BEING BROUGHT UP BY SOCIAL MEDIA.

Thanks

Tony Barron

Year 4 Bike Safety Centre Visit

We come from many lands…..As part of Marymount Day celebrations I would like to involve all students in putting together a visual display of the diversity of backgrounds our families represent. I ask that each family has a discussion about the countries their ancestors come from.

• Choose one or two countries and draw/colour in a fl ag of that nation. • Make it a half A4 size (about the size of this sheet)• Leave a gap on the left hand side to wrap the fl ag around a straw• Stick with glue or tape to secure the fl ag to the top part of the straw• Write your family name on the back and the country represented• Bring it in to your class teacher by Wednesday 3 September

Need help?? http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/fl ag-colouring-pages or see your teacher or come to the offi ce to ask Ms Christensen

Marymount Day 2014Each year the college and primary communities gather in prayer to recognise the birthday of our namesake, Mary. In 2014 this will take the form of a Liturgy of the Word on Friday 5 September at 9.15am in the Doyle Centre. We will refl ect on Mary’s infl uence in the life of the Church and most particularly on her role as mother to Jesus. The scripture readings of the day this year focus our thoughts on the genealogy of Jesus and on his family connection through time to the chosen people of God.

Similarly this year we will refl ect on the ethnic diversity of the families in our community. Please take a little time to engage as a family with the fl ag activity as described above. This simple visual expression of our diversity highlights the richness of the experience which students bring to life at Marymount every day.

A major aspect of Marymount Day celebrations are our outreach efforts to others. We support St Vincent de Paul in their work for local families. Please consider purchasing the following items when you shop for groceries in the next couple of weeks.

Prep - packets of jelly, museli bars, combsYr 1 – cracker biscuits, vegemite, cakes of soapYr 2 – 2 minute noodles, Weet-Bix, toothbrushesYr 3 – tea bags, sml jars of coffee, sml tissuesYr 4 – canned potatoes, canned corn, roll-on deodorantYr 5 – packets of pasta & sauce, dry soup mix, toothpasteYr 6/7 – pasta sauces, items for hygiene packs

School Banking Day Reminder - Tuesday

WOW! It is week 6 of Term 3 already – Time certainly is fl ying by!

We have started off with a very busy few weeks of School Banking, with lots of rewards being redeemed as well - Congratulations and well done to all you Super Savers!!!!

Don’t forget that Tuesday is School Banking day and students should bring their weekly deposits.

For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a cool Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens (ie made 10 deposits), they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their continued savings behaviour.

If you have any questions regarding the school banking program, feel free to drop in to Student Reception on a Tuesday morning (between 9am and 10am) and ask for Annemarie.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED – The school banking program is run by volunteers, and we are very short at the moment. If you have an hour spare on a Tuesday morning, your help would be greatly appreciated. It’s really easy work, and a nice way to meet other parents. Please call Annemarie on 0419 706 123 if you have any questions or if you are able to help out.

Remember our school earns 5% commission on every deposit made (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Marymount Primary School.

Happy Banking! The Banking Ladies

In his article this week Michael Grose provides ideas for matching your parenting style to your children’s developmental stage. He suggests that new stages in development provide new opportunities and challenges. I particularly enjoyed the quote from Eleanor Roosevelt “Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself”. Michael reminds us that should we be struggling to get it right, it is important we not be too hard on ourselves. Consider the challenge “as an opportunity to learn”.

My best wishes to all for the week ahead. Mary [email protected]

INSIGHTSBuilding parent-school partnerships

Parents of large families tend to have seen it all before. But if you have only one or two kids, you’re pretty much learning it all on the run. Here are some ideas for matching your parenting style to your kids’ development.

Get your

If you’re the parent of a small family (two children or less), your learning curve is steep as there are so many firsts: first steps, first time at preschool, first experience of school camp, first transition from childhood to adolescence.

The extensive list of ‘first’ experiences means you constantly

need to acquire new knowledge (“Now, how does this toilet-

training work?”) and new skillsets (“Hmm. How do I persuade a

reluctant toilet trainer?”).

The other challenge, of course, is matching your parenting

with the developmental needs of each stage in your child’s

young life.

You know how it goes: Just as you finally learn how to

successfully tackle an independent-minded toddler, he

suddenly moves into a more compliant but far more inquisitive

stage. You think, “What’s with all the questions? Do I have to

answer them all?”

New stages, New opportuNItIes, New challeNges!

Parents of large families can draw on their previous

experiences, but when you lead a small crew it’s largely trial

and error. Here are some ideas for matching your parenting

with your child’s developmental stage:

1 Follow your child’s lead. Kids will let you know in many

and varied ways what they require from you.

2 learn from other parents who have been down the

parenting track before you. Ask questions: “Does your six-year-

old...?” “Is it normal that...?”

3 When a previously successful strategy no longer serves its

purpose, this is evidence that your child has moved to a new

developmental stage. Now you need to ask yourself whether

you have too.

4 Follow the lead of professionals such as child

care workers, teachers and parent educators who have

broader experience of specific age groups.

5 Learn more about developmental stages and

their parenting requirements. Each stage brings new

challenges and new opportunities. Understanding the

developmental needs of children helps you match your

parenting to their age and stage.

eleanor roosevelt once

said: “learn from the

mistakes of others. You

make them all yourself”.

this wisdom definitely

applies to parenting,

especially in smaller

families. so if it’s a

struggle to get it right,

don’t be too hard on

yourself. see it as an

opportunity to learn.
