Lin-Manuel Miranda at the 2008 Tony Awards

Lin-ManueL Miranda: at the tony awards &

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who conceived the Tony Award-winning In the Heights and wrote the music and lyrics, is a new voice

with an old soul. The show is propelled by the rhythms of hip hop and Latin music–un-common sounds, to be sure, in musical the-ater–but the invigorating beat belies a musi-cal steeped in Broadway tradition.

In the Heights follows a close-knit com-munity of hard-working Latino immigrants as they strive for a better life; search for love; dream the American Dream; and create a ha-ven, a home. The central figure in the piece is Usnavi, who, like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, is both leading man and storyteller.

“Fiddler is in the DNA of Heights,” says Miranda. “If you look at our opening num-ber, it’s ‘Tradition’ with hip hop. It’s very deliberately modeled after ‘Tradition.’ Tevye speaks of ‘the circle of our little village,’ and in Heights, Usnavi starts with the business owners and widens the scope, moving on to the people who are important in his life. Fiddler is about a community where noth-ing’s changed for hundreds of years. Heights is about a community where everything is changing every day. And if we all come from different communities with our own tradi-

tions, what do we take with us, what do we keep? When Jerome Robbins was directing Fiddler, he said, ‘This show is about tradi-tion, and if there’s anything that doesn’t have to do with tradition, it’s out.’ For us, the watchword was ‘home.’ If there was any-thing in the show that didn’t have to do with the concept of home, we took it out.”

“I’m a lifelong New Yorker,” says Miran-da, “and one of the things I love about Wash-ington Heights is that it’s always been an immigrant neighborhood. In many ways, the show is a valentine to Washington Heights.”

It didn’t start out that way. Miranda be-gan writing In the Heights in his sophomore year at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and it was a very different show. “My high school sweetheart was going

abroad to study in the Dominican Republic. We’d been together for about four years, and this was my first time on my own. It was all about the angst I had over the relationship. The first version was not about community at all. That came later, when I moved back home, back into my neighborhood, and real-ized how much material was there.”

But his college effort was such a success that two Wesleyan seniors, Neil Stewart and John Mailer, who had plans to start a theater company, told Miranda that they wanted to help him bring In the Heights to New York.

“The credit for this show getting from Wesleyan to Broadway really goes to Tommy Kail,” says Miranda. “He’s an incredible di-rector. He’s excellent at making sure that ev-eryone’s writing the same show, which is one of the hardest things to do in musicals. Even before we had producers, he had us meet ev-ery Friday, bring in songs, bring in scenes, and pick them apart. There have been five different plots, and sixty cut songs. Writing this show was like my grad school degree.”

In the Heights opened off-Broadway on February 8, 2007, and was an instant hit with critics and audiences. It opened on Broad-way on March 9, 2008 where it won the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations.

There is a consider-able amount of Span-ish spoken and sung in the show, but it’s not necessary to be bilin-gual to understand the thoughts and emotions expressed. “Most of our audience is your typi-cal, theatergoing audi-ence,” says Miranda. “The overwhelming majority of people who come to see our show don’t speak a word of Spanish. And they come away loving it. They understand it. We’ve taken great care to make sure you get everything in context. We’ve tried to use Spanish in the way that Je-rome Robbins used dance: when we get to a point where English won’t suffice, we break into Spanish.”

Miranda hopes that In the Heights en-ables audiences to appreciate his culture, his neighborhood, his community. “What I want most is for people to be aware of the neigh-borhood that I love. I think what’s universal about the show is that we’ve all had some-one in our lives who wanted us to do better. We’ve all had a place we call home, or we’ve yearned to find home.” n

P.l. TRAVERS (Author of the Mary Poppins stories) was born in 1899 in Australia in a residence above the bank where her father was branch manager . She began to write while a member of a touring stage company . In 1924, able to support herself as a journalist, she left Australia for England . She wrote a number of other books in addition to the Mary Poppins stories . She was fascinated by myth and fairy tales and traveled widely, living for a time

In 1927, a reporter for the New York Tele-graph asked reporter turned playwright Maurine Watkins to talk about how she came up with the story for the original

play Chicago. She responded, “I’ll tell you. But don’t you love a good murder?”

Watkins nabbed her first job as a reporter with the Chicago Tribune immediately after college earning more than double a starting ‘cub’s’ wage. Capturing the eye of her edi-tors, she was quickly assigned a beat cover-ing Chicago’s murders. Her popular, colorful reports won her assignments and more ink.

When asked about it, she told the New York Telegraph, “I got to the point where I prayed for murders. Not that you have to pray

very long in vain in Chicago. But I prayed for good murders, and then I prayed that I would be sent out on murders. When I realized I was getting a murder-story complex, I quit. But I doubt if I’ll ever outgrow my love for murders. That’s why I wrote this play about them.”

With a series of fascinating stories about powerful, beautiful murderesses given to her from the pages of real life, she did what any good writer does, she penned them into an edge-of-your-seat story, the story of Chicago.

Almost fifty years after its premiere, Fred Ebb, John Kander, and Bob Fosse took Watkins fascinating play and turned it into Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville. The show

opened on Broad-way in June of 1975 and ran for more than 900 days gar-nering mixed re-views. The musical was nominated for more than ten Tony® Awards (includ-ing Jerry Orbach for Best Actor), two Drama Desk awards, and three Olivier awards. While the original production of A Chorus Line cap-tured most of the 1975/76 Tonys, the musical won the 1975 Drama Desk award for Outstanding Lighting Design. After a short London production, the musical closed and lay silent for nearly twenty years.

In 1996 New York City Centre’s Encores! program, which takes rarely heard works of America’s most important composers and lyricists and gives them a chance to be per-formed, selected Chicago for its three-show season. After an enthusiastic reception, pro-ducers Barry and Fran Weissler had the re-vival up and on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on November 14, 1996. The show soon moved to the Shubert Theatre where it played until 2003 when it became a New York institution at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway.

Since its revival, it’s hard to believe that such a dramatic and award winning piece of American musical history was once con-sidered “rarely heard.” After eleven record-breaking years on Broadway, the current revival has been performed in twenty-three countries, translated into ten languages and been graced by an incredible number of top stars.

With over 16,000 performances for more than 18 million people, Chicago has grossed more than $850 million. That’s a far cry from cub reporter Maurine Watkins’ $50 a week salary to pen the exploits of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery. A salacious story in 1926, sul-try musical in 1975 and show stopping block-buster today, the tales of Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly and Billy Flynn seem like they could

be taken from today’s tabloid newsstand. It appears that the answer to Watkin’s “Don’t you love a good murder?” is a most resound-ing, Yes, yes we do. n

DISNEY (Producer). Since its founding in 1923, the Walt Disney Company has become a world leader in creating high quality family entertain-ment . Under the direction of president and CEO Robert A . Iger, the company’s diverse entertain-ment interests now include film, theatre, television, radio, home entertainment and music, as well as world-renowned theme parks and resorts . Mary Poppins, one of the most successful films in the company’s history, was released in 1964 20 years after Walt Disney first tried to secure the film rights to the P .L . Travers stories . The film was a phenomenal achievement, earning five Academy Awards®‚ including Best Music and Best Song, and remains one of Disney’s most enduring and best-loved films . DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS, a division of The Walt Disney Studios, was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher . With 15 pro-ductions currently produced or licensed by DTP worldwide, a Disney musical is being performed professionally somewhere on the planet virtually every hour of the day . The company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, opened in 1994 . It played a remarkable 13 year run on Broadway and has been produced in 28 countries worldwide . In November 1997, Disney opened The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony® Awards including Best Musical and continues in its 14th smash year, having welcomed over 50 million visitors worldwide . In addition to its 3 North American productions, it can currently be seen in London, Hamburg and Tokyo with Singapore to open in 2011 . Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony® Awards, running for four-and-a-half years and spawning productions around the world . Mary Poppins, a co-production by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, opened in London in 2004 and has established itself as one of the biggest stage musi-cal successes to emerge in recent years . The Tony Award®-winning Broadway production opened in 2006 at Disney’s New Amsterdam Theatre, where it continues to delight audiences . Mary Poppins can also be seen on tour across North America, in

Holland and Australia with four more productions scheduled to open this year . Tarzan®, which opened on Broadway in 2006, is now an international hit with an award-winning production in Germany and a record-setting one in Holland that closed in May 2009 . In January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway and was the #1-selling new musical of that year, completing its run in August 2009 . In addition to producing musicals, DTP licenses stage performance rights to more than a dozen Disney musicals around the world through Music Theatre International .

His latest production of Oliver! has just opened at London’s historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane with Rowan Atkinson starring as Fagin, leading a huge company and orchestra of more than 100 . His recent musical co-produced with Disney, Mary Poppins (a subject that he has wanted to do for more than 30 years), has been an enormous success in London and on Broadway . An international touring production is touring the UK this spring followed by productions in Amsterdam and Sydney .
