EDVARD GRIEG VINYL REDESIGN

december ‘13size: 8”x8”

This vinyl features two songs by Edvard Grieg: Holberg Suite for Piano Prelude, In the Hall of the Mountain King. Two designs were created as an accurate, visual representation of the song’s qualities and atmosphere it induces.I designed the cover for the Holberg Suite based on three words: incessant, bright, and uplifting. For the inside design for the second song (In the Hall of the Mountain King), I focused on its ominous, careful, and apprehensive qualities.

This typeface specimen on Serifa has six spreads which includes the history of the typeface, the history of the typographer, the anatomy of Serifa, and a personal critique of the typeface. Particularly for Serifa, I wanted to show that Serifa still appears surprisingly elegant yet com-fortable for a slab serif. I also wanted to show the influence of Univers on Serifa, as Frutiger used the skeleton of Univers for this typeface.

CM3IDENTITY LOGOoctober ‘13size: 8”x8”

I created four different iterations of possible logos for my client, Christopher Meier, while experimenting with figure-ground. Using three traits of my client (his two initials and birth order number), I wanted to depict three char-acteristics: sturdy, naturalistic, and outgoing.

BIKE BANDITBIKE WALK KC POSTER

april ‘14size: 18”x24”

Reinforced by the caption on the bottom, “biking: your getaway car for life,” this poster design plays on the word, “getaway.” Both a getaway from one’s problems and a getaway car for a criminal escaping the police, the raccoon-like eyes speak to both aspects. This poster was made to encourage people in Kansas City to bike more often under the organization, BikeWalk KC.

Even though discrimination of color, sex, or nance are no longer directly expressed, social labels and racial proling are completely immersed in society, making it harder to address the problem. Blatant evidence of racism emerges in statistics such as these. What needs to change is the thought process of society as a whole; instead of quietly living amongst unjustiable patterns of thinking, we should raise awareness of the issue.

RACIAL INEQUALITYINFOGRAPH

march ‘14size: 11”x17”

Through visually depicting data, the viewer can easily grasp the disparity between the races in terms of annual income, marriage rates, poverty, and home ownership. Each graph is color-cod-ed, marking the differences between the four prominent racial groups in the United States.

I redesigned Bicycle Playing Cards’ packaging into a product of high quality and sophistica-tion. Utilizing one of the Gestalt Principles, translation, I photographed carefully placed cards into a sweeping motion across the box.

I designed this with two other students as a piece that represents the environment and character of KCAI. We focused on KCAI’s sheltering qualities, its adventurous students and artistic dynamism. The white layerings of the structure twist and bend, referencing the fleeting and mobile nature of tents. Just as tents are temporary homes, this envi-ronmental sculpture also gives the viewer a sense of shelter as it hugs and occupies the walkway.

CARNIVALESQUE MODERNITYLECTURE SERIES POSTERapril ‘14size: 36”x24”

Made to promote a supposed lecture by environ-mental graphic designer Deborah Sussman, this poster speaks to Sussman’s stye without simply imitating her work. Her designs mainly involve the combination of architecture and graphic design, where she treates three-dimensional space as flat surfaces for typography. I chose to emphasize her playfulness, theatricality, and exhuberant style in this lecture series poster.

MIESEDITORIAL

april ‘14size: 7.5”x11”

This editorial features the article, Conversations with Mies van der Rohe edited by Moises Puente. In exposing the grid in the background and showing the layout of the page, it speaks to Mies’ aesthetic of revealing essential qualities in architecture.

I designed a digital and printed version of the article, Converations with Mies van der Rohe edited by Moises Puente. Meant to be read on the iPad, this editorial features voice recordings of Mies on demand, as well as an interactive photo gallery of Mies’ life work.

skyscrapers directly came as a result technological advancement, social developments helped

bring about skyscrapers as well. Originally, the term skyscraper referred to buildings of ten to

twenty stories, however, by the late twentieth century, the term was used to describe buildings

that had greater than forty to fty stories.

SKYSCRAPERTIMELINE POSTERmarch ‘14size: 18”x36”

Calling upon a skyscraper’s verticality and di-mensionality, the image appears to be receding in space. As if looking up into an elevator shaft or at the underlying structure of a skyscraper, the viewer can feel the towering height. The “falling” letters, the white arrows emphasizing an upward motion, and the depiction of depth give the viewer a sense of uneasiness. As for the timeline itself, chronology is conveyed utilizing the illusion of distance. The closer the text appears, the more recent the event occurred.

SOUTHWEST CHIEFAMTRAK POSTER

february ‘14size: 18”x24”

Using a qualitative approach to riding the South-west Chief Amtrak Route, I wanted the poster to show the route’s rugged terrain and intense heat in that region. The letters of Southwest Chief pass through the lines, depicting movement as a viewer would see it through the windows of the train.
