PITTSBURGH PIRATES (74-48) LHP J.A. Happ (1-1, 2.87) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (50-74) RHP Tom Koehler (8-11, 4.02) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Monday, August 24, 2015 – 7:10 P.M. FISH BITES The Marlins and Pirates open a four-game series tonight at Marlins Park (7:10 p.m.) Right-handed pitcher Tom Koehler will get the starting call for Miami; he is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA (16.0 ip/12 er) in three career starts against the Buccos. Pittsburgh will send left-hander J.A. Happ to the mound; he is 2-2 with a 4.54 ERA (41.2/21) in nine career appearances (six starts) against the Marlins. Miami opened this homestand against Philadelphia (1-3) after coming off a 3-3 road trip to St. Louis (1-2) and Milwaukee (2-1). Following this series, the Marlins travel to Washington (August 28-30) and Atlanta (August 31-September 2) on a six-game road trip. Tonight’s National Anthem will be performed by Paola Proctor, and ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by Jorge Bernal and Sue Freedman. VS. THE PIRATES Miami begins the final leg of this eight-game homestand tonight against the Pirates. Pittsburgh holds a 3-0 lead in the season series, having swept the Fish at PNC Park from May 25-27. The Marlins are looking to snap a five-game losing streak to the Buccos; they are just 5-15 against the Pirates since the move to Miami, including a 2-10 mark over the last 12 meetings. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series, 92-79, but Miami has a 48-33 edge in South Florida (4-4 at Marlins Park). YESTERDAY Miami was shut down by rookie right-hander Aaron Nola, who tossed 8.0 scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory for the Phil- lies here at Marlins Park. Dee Gordon (1x4), Martin Prado (1x4), and Adeiny Hechavarria (1x2, bb) had the only hits for Miami, and the Fish had only five base runners, two of whom were caught stealing. Rookie left-hander Adam Conley had a strong outing, allowing just one run on three hits and four walks over 6.0 innings, with five strikeouts. Rookie reliever Brian Ellington tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, and has not allowed an earned run over his last five appearances. GOING RIGHT AGAINST THE LEFT Miami, which faces southpaw J.A. Happ tonight, is leading the National League this season with a .277 team average against left-handed pitching. That ranks third in the Majors, behind only Detroit (.284) and Toronto (.284). Despite that, the Marlins are just 11-15 in games started by left-handed pitchers this season; only Colorado (5) and Atlanta (9) have fewer wins. LOOKING TO REGAIN HIS FORM Tom Koehler has made just two starts at home in the second half of the season, and has taken the loss in both, posting a 9.58 ERA in that time (10.1 ip/11 er). That comes in sharp contrast to his first half at home, when he made seven starts (eight appearances) at Marlins Park and went 4-1 with a 1.68 ERA (48.1/9). His home ERA in the first half of the season ranked fifth in the National League (min. 7 GS), behind an impressive list of names: Zack Greinke (1.46), A.J. Burnett (1.58), Johnny Cueto (1.64), and Jacob deGrom (1.67). In the second half, only three of 79 NL pitchers with at least two home starts have a higher ERA than Koehler: David Phelps (9.64), Kyle Kendrick (10.61), and Tyler Cravy (11.74). BULLPEN ROLLERCOASTER Miami relievers have allowed a run in six straight games, tied for the second-longest streak of the season (also, June 5-10), behind a seven-game stretch from August 2-8. The bullpen has descended into this valley after reaching one of the highest peaks in Club history, as it posted an MLB-leading 1.72 ERA in July, which ranked as the second-lowest monthly ERA in team history, behind a 1.58 mark in June 1993. Two things that have remained consistent with the bullpen this season are its ability to strike out batters and keep them in the yard. The Marlins are third in the National League reliever strikeouts (387), behind Milwaukee (401) and Philadel- phia (401), and in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (9.01), behind the Dodgers (10.19) and Milwaukee (9.51). Also, Miami relievers have allowed just 28 home runs, the third-fewest in the NL (tied for third-fewest in MLB with Kansas City); only the Mets (25) and St. Louis (23) have allowed fewer. A FEW MORE MILESTONES Ichiro Suzuki is on the brink of achieving a few more milestones in his Hall-of-Fame career. He needs just two more runs scored to reach 2,000 for his career between MLB (1,340) and Japan (658). He has 114 career triples between MLB (91) and Japan (23), one shy of tying Yutaka Fukumoto for the most career triples by a Japanese player. Also, he has 2,923 career Major League hits, four away from tying Al Simmons (2,927) for 37 th on the all-time list. DIETRICH DRIVING OFFENSE Derek Dietrich has an RBI in five of his last eight games played, dating back to August 16. He is batting .385 (10x26) in that time, with six runs scored, three doubles, a triple, two home runs, and nine RBI, as well as a .452 on-base percentage and an .808 slugging percentage. Dietrich has accounted for nine of the Club’s 22 extra- base hits (27 percent), and nine of its 37 RBI (24 percent) in that time, while only Dee Gordon has more hits (14) and runs (eight) on the Club. Since August 16, Dietrich leads the NL in RBI, is tied for sixth in average, is seventh in slugging, eighth in OBP, and sixth in OPS (1.259). HOT AUGUST NIGHTS Since the calendar turned to August, several Marlins have been on hot streaks. Cole Gillespie is batting .365 (19x52) in that time, which ranks second in the National League (min. 57 PA). Dee Gordon is batting .353 (30x85), which ranks fourth, and Ichiro Suzuki checks in at .338 (22x65), good for seventh. Also, Adeiny Hechavarria is hitting at a .319 (23x72) clip, which ranks 18 th . AGE DEFYING Ichiro Suzuki ranks seventh in the National League in batting for the month of August, checking in with a .338 (22x65) average in 20 games. This is the most hits he has recorded in a calendar month since putting up 29 in July 2013, and the .344 mark would be his highest in a month (min. 19 G) since hitting .352 (19x54) in August 2014. ATTEMPTING A RARE FEAT Dee Gordon currently leads the National League (and MLB) in batting at .335, ahead of Bryce Harper (.330). Only four second basemen (10 times) have ever won the NL batting title: Jackie Robinson (.342 in 1949), Rogers Hornsby (seven times, last .387 in 1928), Larry Doyle (.320 in 1915), and Ross Barnes (.404 in 1876). - Stats LLC MARLINS VS.
