The House of Representatives has passed the Government’s Federal

Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) Bill which would protect some interstate operators from paying too much in registration charges. For this Bill to become a law, it will need to be passed by the Senate, however if the Senate does not pass this before the end of June, over

a thousand FIRS operators with registrations expiring in July, August or September will have to pay an extra 9.7 percent in registration charges in addition to the phased in rise for large combinations rather than the 4.2 percent agreed on by Australia’s transport ministers. The owner of a FIRS registered B-double would have to pay $808

more, while the owner of a registered prime mover and semi trailer would need to pay $295 more.This Bill was not opposed by the Opposition, after the ATA provided detailed information on how the problem would affect individual operators. ■

The Salvos’ network of collection centres and retail stores is upgrading

its fleet of 40 delivery trucks to Hino Hybrid 300 Series diesel electric trucks. In five Australian states, Salvos stores Southern Territory will make the switch, as the current diesel trucks need to be replaced. Hino Hybrid trucks were chosen to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. These trucks will also offer increased payload when compared to those currently used in the fleet.The first five Hino Hybrids have already been delivered to Salvos Stores Noble

Park warehouse in Melbourne. Salvos Stores’ General Manager, Finance and Operations, Frank Staebe said that Salvos Stores was committed to sustainability, recycling and the environment.He commented, “On average, Salvos Stores’ trucks travel approximately 600 kilometres each week, which equates to 2500 kilometres per month and 30,000 kilometres a year.“The new hybrid trucks use less fuel for urban and city driving, producing less emissions with a reduction in particulate matter.

“They can also transport six pallets of goods, which our previous truck configurations were not capable of doing. “Our purchase of the Hino Hybrid trucks is just one step in creating a sustainable business that works with the environment, not against it. The new trucks will be used for general deliveries, pick-ups, home collections and any specific jobs that crop up from time to time. In the first instance, they will mainly be used for inner-city runs, where Hino’s Hybrid system suits stop-start operations.” ■

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will further expand its

operations outside of Europe. The manufacturer has confirmed that its popular Actros truck range will begin production in South America from 2011. Investments in construction, mining, agriculture and the oil industry have seen demand for heavy-duty trucks in Latin America soar to almost double that of the same time last year. Demand for light duty trucks also

increased by around 45 percent more than the same time last year.President of Mercedes-Benz Brazil, Jürgen Ziegler said that between January and May this year, 18,047 Mercedes-Benz trucks were sold in Brazil alone– more than the total sold in Australia during the same period.In order to supply the Latin American market with heavy-duty vehicles, production of the Actros will take place in the Juiz de Fora factory, located in the Brazilian state of Minas

Gerais. From 2011, the factory will also manufacture the Accelo, a Brazilian Mercedes-Benz light truck.In addition, Actros models will also be manufactured at the Aksaray factory in Turkey to cope with the country’s increased demand for the model.Despite these expansion plans, Mercedes-Benz has said that all Australian trucks will continue to be manufactured in the Wurth factory in Germany. ■

A recent press release centred on the US developed LocJaw which has

recently become available in Australia, states that the product is suitable for use with Jost fifth wheels. Jost Australia has quickly responded to this by stating that it does not recommend or endorse the product under any circumstances and that the use of this product on any of its fifth wheels will void warranties.The LocJaw is described as “a simple and cost effective safety locking mechanism that can be fitted to the turntable of a prime mover or to tandem axle A trailers in B-double applications”. It is said to provide a secondary point of restraint in the event of king pin failure.

But Managing Director of Jost Australia, Ed Crowther stated, “Jost Australia has had no access to tests which have been carried out on the strength, dimensions or surface finish of the LocJaw. Tampering with foot pins in our fifth wheels will automatically void warranty and potentially interfere with insurance claims in the event of a mishap. This system may also interfere with the articulation of the fifth wheel, particularly those fitted with low feet.”Ed explained that Jost Australia’s main concern is that the use of the LocJaw results in the fifth wheel being modified. He added that the company also fears that operators might assume the LocJaw

has been approved by Jost Australia, which it has not. He concluded, “Jost is very aware of its position as a leading manufacturer and supplier of truck and trailer equipment both here in Australia and around the world and takes any potential safety issues very seriously. We have advised DOTARS and the Federal Office of Road Safety of our concerns and also advised that we are not associated with this product in any way.”Jost Australia has requested any references to the Jost name be removed from all literature pertaining to the LocJaw. ■

Jost Australia airs concern over LocJaw product

One of Australia’s largest national providers of fully integrated end to

end logistics, the Wettenhalls Group, has announced a merger with Westvic Container Services in Warrnambool that is expected to provide Victoria’s western region with a more efficient, higher capacity intermodal logistics network.

This merger will utilise Wettenhalls’ national network and Westvic’s rail capabilities to fully optimise freight rail capacity in the area and provide several well linked freight lines which will extend through Victoria’s ports, rail hubs and major road corridors throughout the nation. By better utilising this

intermodal network, the company will also reduce its gas emissions.In addition to greater efficiency, higher level of service and environmental advantages, this partnership is set to provide economic benefits to the region by encouraging greater business activity and investment. ■
