TNT Express Australia recently took delivery of it 30th Hino Hybrid 300

Series diesel-electric truck, making it the owner of the largest hybrid truck fleet in the country.The keys to its latest addition were handed over to Bob Black, Managing Director TNT Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands, by Hino Motors General Ltd Global President, Mr Yoshio Shirai.The company pioneered the use of a hybrid truck fleet in Australia when it commissioned its first Hino hybrids in early 2008. TNT Express Australia now operates Hino hybrid fleets in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.Hino Australia President, Steve Lotter said that TNT had been quick to realise the environmental and fuel saving benefits of Hino Hybrid technology. He said, “The company’s real-world experience in high-use applications showed each Hino Hybrid in its fleets reduced greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1600 kilograms of CO2 a year.

“The transport industry’s emphasis on being green has grown enormously in the last couple of years, with companies like TNT leading the way by increasing the size of their overall hybrid fleet. This is a great endorsement of both the benefits and suitability of Hino’s hybrid trucks for Australian operations.”The Hino Hybrid 300 Series has also been purchased by many other major Australian fleets including grocery and confectionary companies, local councils

and a leading network of collection and retail stores.Hino has also introduced a second hybrid model to its product range and the first diesel-electric hybrid truck in Australia with automatic transmission. The new Hino Hybrid 300 Series automatic uses the same power sources as the manual transmission model, drawing power from a 100kW diesel engine and 36kW electric motor. ■

The 2010 National Transport Insurance (NTI) NatRoad Awards for Excellence in the Road Transport Industry were announced following the NTI Awards Lunch last Friday at NatRoad’s Conference on the Gold Coast.Brian Dark from Lindsay Transport was named winner of the 2010 Professional Driver of the Year Award while Dave Kreutzberger from Border Express received the 2010 Transport Youth Award.NatRoad congratulated Brian and Dave for their Awards. In addition to a trophy, each winner received a $2000 travel voucher.Brian is a B-double linehaul changeover

driver for Lindsay Transport. After over 10 years service with the Australian Army’s Transport Corps, he joined Lindsay Transport in 1997 and assists with new driver inductions. He is recognised as having a very professional attitude to his work, and cares for his customers.Brian is proactive in undertaking training offered by his employer. He has driven many accident free kilometres, and helps to maintain his truck and trailers in immaculate condition.Dave Kreutzberger is a mechanic working for Border Express where he completed his Heavy Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship, achieving exceptionally high standards through Wagga Wagga TAFE.

Dave is an adaptable and reliable worker who is able to complete any tasks allocated to him to a very high standard. He shows great initiative and motivation in seeking further educational opportunities that will equip him with the necessary skills to be a leader in his field and also benefit us as a business.His awards include: NSW Training Awards 2009 Winner – Top Apprentice in the Vehicle Trade; Ministers Award for excellence for employers of Australian Apprentices 2009; 2008 Hartwigs Award for Most Outstanding Student and results( over all stages); and Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia Award for outstanding Achievement 2009. ■

The Victorian government has released details of its Truck Action Plan (TAP) and West Link to relieve congestion in Melbourne’s western suburbs.Three options for the West Link are under consideration. One involves a tunnel linking the Port of Melbourne with the industrial area in Footscray West before passing along Sunshine Road to the Western Ring Road. The second also uses

the tunnel but travels through Brooklyn and Tottenham before joining the Western Ring Road. The third option is for a long tunnel travelling from the Port of Melbourne to the industrial area in Paramount Road.“All three shortlisted options provide important benefits for Melbourne’s west, including direct access to the Port of Melbourne for heavy vehicles and

catering for future population growth,” said Victorian Roads and Ports Minister, Tim Pallas.“In relation to freight movement, our investigations have shown that West Link would reduce congestion and tech heavy vehicles on local roads in the inner west, particularly Somerville Road, Francis Street, Barkly St and Buckley Street.” ■

In an announcement to the European truck press, Iveco has unveiled its plans for a new lineup of engines and trucks in 2014. The European truck market will see major changes in that year as the much more stringent Euro 6 exhaust emission rules will come into force.Iveco is planning an entire new family

of diesel engines using common rail fuel injection. The biggest is a new 16L engine, taking the company into the higher horsepower it has lacked in recent years. The Cursor 8 and 10 engines are to be replaced by a new Cursor 9 and 11 engine range but the current Cursor 13 will remain.

The company is also planning to introduce a major evolution in the Stralis cab in 2012 as a precursor to a complete change in the trucks available. A new lineup of, what are described as, ‘modular and global products’ will be on offer from the Turin-based company from 2014. ■

White Motor Corporation, distributor of Higer buses and JAC trucks for Australia and New Zealand, has appointed two key customer executives.The company has announced the appointment of Taran Mutch as National Service Manager and Scott Morrison as National Parts Manager, adding to its ability to deliver the highest levels of customer support.Taran Mutch has over 30 years of experience in the heavy vehicle industry, having started as a diesel mechanic and comes to Higer and JAC from the Volvo Group where he held a key role as National Service Manager for UD Trucks.He will oversee the expansion of the company’s service and customer support operations at a time when the

sales volume of Higer buses is rapidly increasing and as it prepares for the introduction of JAC trucks to the Australian market.Scott Morrison joins White Motor Company from Daimler Benz where he was National Parts Manager for Fuso. He has worked in the heavy vehicle industry in a parts role for more than 20 years and brings a wealth of experience managing parts inventories and ensuring customers vehicles stay on the road as a result of strong parts back up.According to CEO of White Motor Corporation, Jason Pecotic, the appointments strengthen the company’s customer service capabilities and are a vital part of its strategy to deliver the highest levels of product back up and support.

JAC or Jianghuai Automobile Co. Ltd, manufactures a full range of vehicles from light, medium and heavy-duty trucks to MPVs, SUVs, passenger cars and buses. The company also manufactures engineering machinery, engines, gearboxes and other key components. The JAC brand will appear on the Australian market early next year.White Motor Company is based in Sydney and has been the Australian distributor for Higer buses and coaches since 2006. Since securing the distribution rights for JAC in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, White Motor Company has moved quickly to establish a new head office and distribution centre at Milperra in Sydney’s South West to serve both its JAC and Higer operations. ■

This application provides users with up-to-date information about their fleet through their iPhone including the real-time location of individual vehicles or the entire fleet, sending

and receiving messages to and from vehicles, routing vehicles to destinations and replaying recent movement of vehicles. Paresh Nagda of Navman Wireless said, “The launch of the Navman Wireless iPhone Application marks an important milestone in making rich vehicle tracking applications available on a smartphone platform.”

The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has announced Continental Tyres of Australia Pty Ltd as a new Alliance partner, saying that this partnership will allow the industry to be informed about a world class product that to date has had limited availability in Australia but comes with a reputation for quality and innovation internationally.VTA CEO, Philip Lovel AM, commented “We are delighted to have Continental Tyres join us as an Alliance Partner.
