Quilt Talk

April 24, 2018

Hello Quilting Friends!

The North Star Quilters have something exciting happening in just a

few days. Our Canadian Friends are coming to visit for our 39th

Annual International Days. That means next year is the 40th year!

Wow! I would love to hear more about that first year, I am assuming

it was in Grand Forks (Since we now host on the odd years…). Who

remembers that experience? It would have been in 1979. That was a

flood year. Let me know what you remember when you have some

time.

We look forward to sharing a fun day. Here’s our agenda:

Location: Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (1515 Fifth Avenue NW,

East Grand Forks, MN)

9:15–10:00 Coffee/Muffins

10:00 Opening Remarks, Welcome

Door prizes will be drawn at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00

10:30 Vendors and Visiting

11:30–12 Show and Tell

12–1 Lunch

1–2 Kim Baird, Speaker, International Patchwork and Quilting

We hope that you have purchased your ticket. If not, please contact

our registration chairs: Lorraine Leblanc or Carolyn Flom. You can

still get tickets up until April 30. They are $15.00 per person. Feel

free to invite a guest if you wish. I’m bringing my quilting niece, and

plan to put her to work passing out chips and sauce.

Part of this fun day is the show and tell, and that depends on you.

Please bring your proudest moment from the past year to share.

Even if it is a quilt that we have seen, we would love to see it again

and have you show it to our northern friends.

We think we have everything in place. If you have time to come help

with set up, we will be at Our Saviors on Friday, May 4th at 10 am to

prepare the space. We could also use some help at 8:00 on the

morning of the event (May 5) to help our vendors set up, as well as

help our Door Prize Coordinators with set up.

So put on your Sombreros and join us for a fun Cinco de Mayo Fiesta!

Hasta La Vista!

NOTE TO HOSTESSES:

• DO NOT USE THE CHURCH SUPPLIES (only serving utensils may

be used)

can, they will be identified with NSQG on them. They include

coffee, cups, sugar and creamer, small plates, napkins, and forks

as well as dish cloths and dish towels.

• At the end of the morning, the coffee pot should be empty and

rinsed and any serving utensils are cleaned and put away.

Contact Leah Fry or Donna Beal if you have any questions.

A Note from the Editor

International Day is almost here and what a perfect day to have it...Cinco de Mayo. We will have the

Canadian women visiting, a Mexican menu, and the

vendors we have are familiar to most of us so we’ll get

a chance to visit with old friends. It doesn’t get any

better than that.

International Day is definitely a day of celebration for

both of our guilds. It is a tradition that has been car-

ried on through the years and many of us look forward to meeting and getting to know quilters from up north,

while many others of us are looking forward to renew-

ing friendships made from previous get togethers.

The food and friendship is always good, but I think we

all agree that show and tell is a definite favorite. It’s

exciting for us to see what Winnipeg is quilting and for

our visitors to see what has inspired Grand Forks. We

all go home with smiles, purchases, door prizes, and lots of new ideas.

Welcome Winnipeg, we look forward to seeing you

again.

The participating quilters from the Fall Quilt Show should bring their quilts to either the May or June meeting to be paired up with the watercolor artist’s painting.

The first donation of quilts for the year will be done at the June meeting. Quilts & Coffee: The April 19th event was cancelled due to a con-flict with the church. Education: Bobbi Shields will present the third installment of the Mystery Quilt showing us how to do curved piecing. Secret Quilter: Diane Bohn delivered her health baby boy named Grant. The Metro Quilt Show will be held in Fargo on May 11-12th, 2018. There will be a quilt exhibition at the Thief River Falls Library until April 30th, 2018.

Show and Tell: Sheila Jerik conducted Show and Tell and again there were some beautiful quilts and projects along with a good number of Outreach quilts.

Winnipeg - Fun facts

How much do we know about our neighbor to the north? Here are some interesting facts and tidbits I found on the internet. My apologies for any incorrect information, I did not verify accuracy, but as we know, you can al-ways believe it if it’s on the internet. Gayle

❖ Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba – and the

geographical center of North America.

❖ Winnipeg’s train station was designed by the same

architects who designed New York City’s Union Sta-

tion.

❖ Winnipeg was the first city in the world to develop

the 911 emergency number.

❖ The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada’s oldest dance

company. It’s also the longest continuously operat-ing ballet company in North America.

❖ Winnipeg has four major rivers – the Assiniboine, La Salle, Red and Seine. The city is extremely flat

and is at risk for major flooding. In April and May

of 1997 the biggest flood since 1826 occurred. Alt-

hough the flood affected Winnipeg it was Grand

Forks and East Grand Forks that were most affect-ed.

❖ Winnipeg boasts the largest number of restau-rants per capita in Canada.

❖ Winnipeg has been the Slurpee Capital of the World for 16 years in a row.

❖ The Royal Canadian Mint, located in Winnipeg, does not only produce all of Canada’s circulation

coins (they produce about 15 million plated coins

each day) but they also make produce international

currency for over 60 governments around the

world!

❖ Winnie-the-Pooh got his name from a black bear

named Winnie who was named after Manitoba’s

capital city, Winnipeg!

❖ The Winnipeg Folk Festival is one of the oldest and biggest folk festivals in the world!
