Roger Giesinger, HRSA President and Chief Negotiator, opened the meeting by providing the audience with insight to the Port’s accomplishments and how these successes could not be obtained without the effort of our workforce and their spouses. Mr. Giesinger’s message was that our Port grows, and everyone prospers when we work together as a team. Other presentations were given by Joseph A. Dorto, General Manager, Virginia International Terminals and Griff Lynch, Project Manager, APM Virginia. Mr. Dorto showed where the Port of Virginia stood in the past, where it stands today, and what it can achieve tomorrow. A lot has changed in the Port from the time when the terminals of Hampton Roads were competing amongst themselves to present day, where the Port is ranked the third largest container port on the East Coast. Many more changes will take place as we strive to become the largest container port on the East Coast, overtaking our biggest competitor, the Port of New York. It is a monumental goal but one we can achieve with team work. Mr. Lynch discussed APM Virginia, Maersk’s $450 million container terminal being constructed on Cox properties. When the largest shipping company invests that kind of money and effort into an area, it is a clear indication that the expansion capabilities in Virginia are attainable. This is the first phase of the Hampton Roads Shipping Association’s communication campaign to reinforce the positive relationships between management, union officials, and the Port’s ILA workforce. The Virginia Chamber of Commerce hosts the Virginia Conference on World Trade annually, this year the event was held on October 12 and 13, at the Williamsburg Marriott. The conference focused on “America in the World - Changing Perceptions and Changing Realities.” Nationally known speakers came to address whether or not anti- Americanism is affecting our economy and every business’ bottom line. Keith Reinhard, President of Business for Diplomatic Action (BDA) and Chairman of the international advertising agency DDB Worldwide was the featured speaker for the opening session. Additional insight on the subject was provided by Stephen Weber, Chief Operating Officer, Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) and Cari Eggspuehler, Executive Director of BDA. The Virginia Trade Luncheon highlighted a presentation given by Robert A. Tappan, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, giving the Administration’s perspective on “America in the World.” The Port of Virginia was the focus on Thursday afternoon as Tom Capozzi, Senior Managing Director of Marketing Services for the Virginia Port Authority gave an update on current and future port operations. Michael R. “Challenges for America’s Shipbuilding Industry”That was the topic of the luncheon hosted by the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton

Roads and the Hampton Roads Maritime Association which was held at the Norfolk Yacht andCountry Club on November 9, 2005.

Mr. Mike Petters, President, Northrop Grumman Newport News, was the key-note speakerwho highlighted some of the issues facing the shipbuilding industry today. Most notable isthe Navy’s fleet being reduced to less than 300 vessels and the increased time lapse betweenordering new ships. To maintain its workforce, Northrop Grumman is cross training fittersand welders into sheet metal workers and electricians so these employees can remainproductive and on the payroll.

There is a glimmer of hope for more work with Adm. Michael G. Mullen, the Navy’s newChief of Naval Operations, who indicated he would approve building two submarines annuallyif costs could be reduced at the Newport News shipyard.

This year Ed Ramsey, International SalesDirector of the Taylor-Ramsey Corporation, was presented with the Rudy Rudershausenaward for his personal rise in the exportindustry as well as for openly promoting theindustry in front of congress.

The Richmond Export Import Clubpresents the Rudy Rudershausen Award tothe individual who has materiallycontributed to the promotion of internationaltrade in Virginia. The award received itsnamesake from F. J. “Rudy” Rudershausenwho had a distinguished career ininternational trade and was the awardrecipient in 1973.

HRMA Highlights

HRMA Committee Activity

OCTOBER

Membership Committee

On October 7th the Membership Committee discussed the Association’s objectives ofexpanding its membership throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as withinHampton Roads and consideration was given to the current structure of the membership.HRMA will seek to expand support for the Port throughout Virginia and increase theinfluence of the Assoiciation. There were discussions of a strategy and the need to maintainthe strength of membership the Association currently enjoys.

International Trade Symposium Committeenational Trade Symposium Committee

The International Trade Symposium Committee held its first meeting October 17th.Because of the success and growth of the event its first two years, a separate committeewas formed to assure the International Trade Symposium continues to succeed and bringvalue to HRMA and attendees. The committee’s first order of business was to considerrequests from outside parties to partner on future symposiums and whether or not toexpand the program to a full day or two days. After much consideration, the committeeformed a recommendation to HRMA’s Board of Directors that the Association enter into apartnership arrangement with American Shipper Magazine for a full day program on May4, 2006. The partnership with American Shipper is anticipated to increase exposure forthe event, grow the event, and help with content development.

Towing and Barge Operators Committee

On October 19th the committee received a report covering rules and regulations for tuginspections which would roll-out in July-August of 2006 and stressing the importance ofknowing and understanding this information. It will be the future of tug operations. There was a review of the annual Towing Vessel Safety Seminar held October 11th. Thisyear there were 98 participants in the Towing Vessel Safety Seminar, informal resultsindicated this event was well received. Most respondents had a positive experience in theevent and felt it was better than previous events. Participants felt they achieved somethingduring the course of the day when they received certificates from one of the three trainingcourses available. Due to the shortage of workers in the towing industry, the committeecreated an ad-hoc committee for recruitment. Further, it was recommended that theHRMA become more involved with Industry Days at local high schools.
