INTRODUCTION

There are many different tupes of absorption refrigeration systems, but they all have the same working principle. Absorption chillers use heat to drive the refrigeration cycle, they produce chilled water while consuming just a small amount of electricity to run the pumps on the unit. Absorption chillers generally use steam or hot water to drive the lithium bromide refrigeration cycle but can also use other heat sources.

How it worksAn absorption cooling cycle relies on three basic principles:• When a liquid is heated it boils (vaporizes) and when a

gas is cooled it condenses• Lowering the pressure above a liquid reduces its boiling

point• Heat flows from warmer to cooler surfaces.

Absorption cooling relies on a thermochemical ‘compressor’. Two different fluids are used: a refrigerant and an absorbent. The fluids have high ‘affinity’ for each other, which means one dissolves easily in the other. The refrigerant—usually water—can change phase easily between liquid and vapor and circulates through the system. Heat from a hot water boiler, steam or a waste-heat source drives the process. The high affinity of the refrigerant for the absorbent (lithium bromide) causes the refrigerant to boil at a lower temperature and pressure than it normally would and transfers heat from one place to another.

ApplicationA dedicated absorption chiller for marine use has been designed taking into consideration and resolving negative aspects such as the refrigerant’s overflow and mixing caused by ship motions, special welding, structure strength and performance de-rating in view of the ship pitching and rol-ling. After careful design and research the absorption chillers were tested on a moving bed to simulate the marine condi-tions. Our maritime absorption chillers can be steam or hot water fired and seawater cooled with Cu/ Ni or Ti absorber and condenser heat exchangers. It can be used to replace a conventional electric chiller (heat source must be 100% of the time available) or in a hybrid version (electric chiller as back up).

Key features• Customized design for vessel conditions• Cost-effective direct cooling and heating• Low noise and low vibration operation• Precise and optimized control by microprocessor-based

controller• Saving of initial investment• High reliability• Communication interface through control system• Range from ~150kw to ~5,000kW• COP up to 0,8

WORKING PRINCIPLE

• During cooling mode, the chiller operates at the condition that under vacuum water boils at low temperature. Un-der typical operating conditions, this occurs at appr. 4,40C.

• A refrigerant pump is used to spray the refrigerant (water) over the evaporator tubes to improve heat transfer.

• For a continuous cooling process:1. The refrigerant vapor must be removed as it is produced. To accomplish this process, a lithium bromide solution is

used to absorb the water vapor. As this process is continuous, the lithium bromide becomes diluted, reducing its absorption capacity.

2. A solution pump transfers the diluted solution to the generators where it is re-concentrated in two stages (double-effect) to boil off the previously absorbed water.

3. A variable frequency drive on the solution pump automatically maintains optimum solution flow to the generators at all operating conditions for maximum efficiency.

4. The diluted solution is pumped to the high-temperature generator where it is heated and re-concentrated to a me-dium concentration solution by the exhaust heat from the gas turbine or reciprocating engine exhaust gas.

5. The medium concentration solution from the high-temperature generator flows to the low-temperature generator where it is heated and rec-concentrated to a strong solution by the high temperature water vapor released from the solution in the high-temperature generator.

6. The low-stage generator acts as the condenser for the high-stage generator, the heat energy first applied in the high-stage generator is used again in the low-stage generator, thus reducing the heat input by appr. 45% as compa-red to an absorption chiller with single-stage of re-concentration.

7. The water vapor releases in the shell side of the low-stage generator, in addition to the condensed water vapor from the tube side of the low-stage generator, enters the condenser to be cooled and returned to a liquid state.

8. The refrigerant water then returns to the evaporator to begin a new cycle.

• To remove heat from the machine:1. Cooling water from a cooling tower is first circulated through the tubes of the absorber to remove the heat of

vaporization. 2. The water is circulated through the tubes of the condenser. 3. The re-concentrated (strong) solution from the low-stage generator flows back to the absorber to begin a new cycle.

• For efficiency purposes:1. The medium concentration solution from the high-stage generator through the high-temperature solution heat

exchanger to pre-heat the dilluted (weak) solution, while pre-cooling the medium concentration solution. 2. The re-concentrated (strong) solution from the low-stage generator is passed through the low-temperature solution

heat exchanger to pre-heat/ pre-cool the solution before being rturned in the absorber.

720 KW EXAMPLE

CONSTRUCTION

SERVICE & MAINTENANCE

The system has a very little amount of rotating components (only refrigerant & solution pump) and requires therefore relative little service & maintenance. The most important part is to check if the system is air tight to prevent air entering into the system and reacts with the Litium Bromide, which will cause a corrosive reaction in the system.

We advise following maintenance schedule:• 1~2 preventative maintenance visits per year, which consists of:

- Leakage testing - Taking samples of the Litium Bromide - Eventually adding remedial chemicals - Cleaning of condenser (Only then the unit must be shut down)

• Refill of LiBr - Experience has thought that the Litium Bromide should be refilled once every 10 years and shall be done by professional companies. - The removed Litium Bromide shall be treated as chemical waste.
