Regular visitors to the Marine Theatre will be well aware of the excellent musicians that Stompin’ Dave Allen brings to Lyme - and Michael Roach is no exception.

Originally from Washington DC, Michael has performed across the globe including at many of the major blues festivals. He founded the European Blues Association and is widely regarded as one of today’s finest exponents of East Coast blues. As well as being an amazing performer he is a respected historian having lectured for the Smithsonian Institute in the USA and Oxford University, as well as presenting Deep Blue, a Radio 4 series on blues music. As if this wasn’t enough, Stompin’ Dave will of course be joining Michael onstage for an unmissable evening of music at the Marine Theatre.

Between Courses presents:

Classic Clapton are the world’s No.1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band. In their 27 years on the road they have become something of a rock institution, touring throughout the UK and across the world. They have appeared at both The Royal Festival Hall, London and at Glastonbury Festival. And from February they will be able to add the Marine Theatre to their list!

No Clapton tribute would be complete without an electrifying frontman and Classic Clapton have just that in Mike Hall (who not only sings and plays like Eric, he looks like him too!). Edith Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 40s and 50s and remains France’s most popular singer. As the 50th anniversary of her death approaches, this powerful celebration of her life and work features many of the classics that made her a star; La vie en rose, Sous le ciel de Paris, Bal dans ma rue, Autumn Leaves, Padam Padam, C’est merveilleux, L’accordéoniste, Non je ne regrette rien and more. Piaf’s life was the stuff of legend, from her dramatic rise from Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Her story, however, is anything but La vie en rose.

Involving some very lo-fi technological wizardry, Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals turns ordinary everyday toys into magical superstars with the aid of a video camera, comedy and punk rock. A new play by Jim Cartwright ‘a communication cacophony, a fully charged up chorus line of chaos in a rhapsody of rap, text, tweet and gabble’ We’re very excited that Lyme Youth Theatre has once again been chosen to take part in the National Theatre Connections Programme. Connections 2013 is a nationwide celebration of young theatre talent and thrilling new plays specially commissioned by the National Theatre. LYT will be performing this challenging new play at the Marine Theatre before taking it to Plymouth Theatre Royal in May.

Jim Cartwright is a multi-award-winning playwright whose work is consistently performed around the world and has been translated into over 35 languages. He has written successfully for film, television and radio and his stage work has been performed at The National Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre, the West End and on Broadway. His plays are on both school and university curriculums and have been constantly in print since 1986.

Toby Kearney is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. He was the percussion soloist in the UK premiere of Stockhausen’s Lucifer’s Dance as part of the Stockhausen KLANG festival at the South Bank in 2008, gave the UK premiere of Michael Jarrell’s Assonances VII at the RCM for the BBC Proms broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and with Dan Jones gave the UK premiere of Avner Dorman’s double percussion concerto Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester (broadcast on BBC Radio 3). As an orchestral musician Toby plays with the CBSO, Opera North, the Hallé, RLPO, Northern Sinfonia, The John Wilson Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Harvey Davies studied the piano with Helen Davies, David Parkhouse and Ryszard Bakst and is well known as a chamber musician and accompanist, having worked with many eminent musicians including Atar Arad, Alison Balsom, Rebecca Evans, Janet Hilton, Guy Johnston and Jennifer Pike. Harvey is the founder and Director of the Pleyel Ensemble, the pianist in Ensemble Cymru, Fellow in Historical Performance, and staff pianist at the Royal Northern College of Music.

When we spotted Sam Carter on Jools Holland’s “Later” last Autumn we couldn’t wait to get him along to the Marine Theatre. And we’re not the only ones who’ve been impressed. Since he released his debut album “Keepsakes” in 2009, there has been a mounting excitement about this songwriter, guitarist and singer.

At the time he was an Emerging Artist In Residence at The Southbank Centre in London. Since then he has supported Bellowhead on a UK tour, performed in the Middle East and UK with the British Council’s “Shifting Sands” project, played to thousands as part of the all-star lineup for the tour “The Lady: A Homage To Sandy Denny”, performed on major venue and festival stages in his own right and walked away with the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. And his arrival hasn’t gone unnoticed by some of the finest singer-songwriters and guitarists in the world today. In the three years since “Keepsakes” was released he has performed alongside Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, Chris Wood and Martin Simpson.

Once again celebrating Lyme’s significance as the birthplace of palaeontology, the Marine Theatre plays host to Lyme Regis Museum’s series of popular talks and lectures on the amazing story of prehistoric life on the Jurassic Coast. This year Stefanie Klug of the University of Bristol uncovers the secrets of Jurassic sharks, whilst Matt Friedman of the University of Oxford tells the story of the Coelacanth fish, a ‘living fossil’ once thought to be extinct for 65 million years yet still swimming the world’s oceans.

Lyme’s own Richard Edmonds, Earth Science Manager for the Jurassic Coast, will kick off the proceedings explaining why our coast is so important and Tom Sharpe of the National Museum of Wales tells the story of Lyme Regis’s early fossil collectors, including the Philpot family, who sponsored Mary Anning and funded the construction of the Lyme Regis Museum.

To end, Sir Crispin Tickell, diplomat, academic and expert in global change explains the Anthropocene, the latest geological era and the future of its dominant species: us.

Lyme Regis Museum, where there will be activities for children and a chance to see rare fossils, including the ‘Philpot Fish’ (kindly loaned by the Oxford University Museum) will be open all day with free entrance.

Chef Stephen Perrigaux brings an evening of culinary entertainment, flavour and fun to the Marine Theatre. We’re very pleased to welcome back Concerts in the West with their exceptional series of classical music concerts to the Marine Theatre. For the other Concerts in the West event this spring, please see page 13.

Featuring Gavin Kibble (cello), The Ianus Consort will perform repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries – Bach, Handel, Telemann and Haydn.

Gavin Kibble is at the beginning of his career as a cellist, specialising in historically informed performance. He gained degrees first from Oxford University, where he was at Magdalen College with Laurence Dreyfus and then from the Royal Academy of Music, where his teacher was Jonathan Manson. In 2011 he was selected to take part in the Académie Européenne de Musique, which saw him performing in Acis and Galatea at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under Leonardo García Alarcón. Gavin plays 19th century repertoire on period instruments with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique of Saintes and has appeared with the London Handel Orchestra, the Amphion Consort, Musica Poetica London and Oxford Baroque.

A full moon rises over a windswept cottage in the middle of nowhere. The children are in bed, the wine is breathing nicely and the dinner is in the oven...

It’s Gordon and Celia’s wedding anniversary. They’ve asked their oldest and dearest friends Zach and Jane down from London. The only problem is that Zach and Jane aren’t Zach and Jane anymore. Jane has gone and Julia – a twenty-five-year-old French burlesque dancer – has taken her place.

What starts as a simple celebration quickly unravels with one revelation after another until we become aware that no one has been telling the truth to anyone about anything for a very long time.

LYME YOUTH THEATRE

Now in its 10th successful year, Lyme Youth Theatre is for children and young people aged 5 - 21 who enjoy theatre and want to discover more. Led by LYT’s professional tutors and directors, classes and workshops enable members to learn the many skills that theatre has to offer whilst providing plenty of opportunities for performance too.

Three classes run on Saturday mornings during term time, and LYT Company (for over 14s) runs for special projects such as National Theatre Connections.LYT is part of LymeArts Community Trust.

Join LYT and be part of it...It costs £5 a year to join. For this you will receive regular news, ticket discounts for a selection of Marine Theatre events, priority booking for LYT classes, workshops and summer schools, performance opportunities and more! Dance - SALSA DX

Come and try a fantastic new Salsa aerobics class – Salsa DX.

This high-energy workout combines dance footwork with aerobic upper body movements to get you back into top shape.

Absolutely no previous experience is needed for a SalsaDX class; we’ll teach you all you need to know. However you will need a reasonable level of fitness and agility to enjoy the class to the max. It is recommended you wear the usual style clothing and trainers to start with though you may want to try shoes with a more “slippy” sole (eg jazz shoes) as you get more experienced.

Dance - ADULT TAP

Whether you want to find a fun way to keep fit, to learn a new skill or to entertain your children whilst you’re cooking, this new adult tap class aims to teach all the basic steps including cramp rolls, suzie q’s, time steps and many more. Once mastered put them together to create fun combinations and routines, all set to great music.

If you don’t already own a pair of tap shoes any comfortable hard soled outdoor shoes will do (no rubber soles though). Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

What could be better than starting the week with a fun tap class in the Marine Theatre setting with views out to sea?

All age groups welcome.

Monday lunchtimes – 12.00pm-1.00pm

The classes are taught in blocks of 5 lessons:
