stage doorbar

Theatre props store, cabinet of curiousities, a shabby-cheek make-under or just plain odd? There’s plenty to talk about, confuse and amuse in the Stage Door Bar, all lovingly created by Wotzat Installations. To complement the stunning sea views across Lyme Bay we’ve recently unveiled a new range of drinks too, with particular emphasis on locally sourced tipples at affordable prices. Come and see what everyone is talking about. For all of our evening performances the bar is open for pre-theatre drinks, an interval libation or a post-show dram.

Jazz in the BarLyme’s newest, most intimate venue is open for business…

HEATHER WENSLEY AND PHILIP CLOUTS Friday 15th MarchDoors 7.00pm / On Stage 8.00pm £5.00 In advance / £6.00 On the door

Lively jazz and gentle bossanovas combined with sultry blues and exquisite ballads, played with sensitivity and finesse, courtesy of rising West Country based jazz vocalist Heather. With pianist Philip Clouts, who has performed at Ronnie Scotts and the Glastonbury Festival, currently touring the UK with his jazz quartet.

MAGGIE REEDAY AND PHILIP CLOUTS Friday 12th April

Doors 7.00pm / On Stage 8.00pm£5.00 In advance / £6.00 On the door

Singer Maggie Reeday is one of the country’s finest vocalists, and has worked in both television and radio. Maggie’s style is unique, as she portrays not only some of the tunes from the Great American Song Book, but her smoky voice also lends itself to blues and more soulful music.

“Maggie sings good jazz standard tunes and makes them her own with an intimate and appealing vocal style” The Guardian

After their hit performance at the Marine last year, we’re delighted to once again welcome The Budapest Café Orchestra to take away your January blues.

The Budapest Café Orchestra delivers the richness and dynamism of Balkan music in all its untameable glory. Featuring a wide-ranging programme of impassioned Hungarian Czardas, tender Russian folk melodies, rollicking dances from Romania and Moldavia, bittersweet Jewish laments, as well as their own electrifying compositions, the music evokes vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires - good enough to make you want to book a holiday along the Danube!

“Back by popular demand, the fiery vivacity and awe-inspiring musicianship of the finest purveyors of Eastern European gypsy music this side of a Lada scrap heap will leave you with a grin on your face and rhythm in your feet…” The Times

Regular visitors to the Marine Theatre will be well aware of the excellent musicians that Stompin’ Dave Allen brings to Lyme - and Michael Roach is no exception.

Originally from Washington DC, Michael has performed across the globe including at many of the major blues festivals. He founded the European Blues Association and is widely regarded as one of today’s finest exponents of East Coast blues. As well as being an amazing performer he is a respected historian having lectured for the Smithsonian Institute in the USA and Oxford University, as well as presenting Deep Blue, a Radio 4 series on blues music. As if this wasn’t enough, Stompin’ Dave will of course be joining Michael onstage for an unmissable evening of music at the Marine Theatre.

“A master of all kinds of American Roots music…a true original.” The Daily Telegraph

Come prepared. It’s going to be wild...

Visit Alaska, one of the last great frontiers of the modern world. A magnificent wilderness of untamed beauty where you can be at one with nature.

Visit Alaska, a desolate wasteland at the borderline of civilisation. A place where you can easily lose your way, your bearings and your very mind!

Visit Alaska, a tragi-comic riot of Pythonesque dottiness guaranteed to leave you spellbound.

Boldly following in the intrepid footsteps of Bear Grylls and Ray Mears and using film, firelight, shadow and one hell of a soundtrack, Alaska is a new play brought to you by Giles King, Craig Johnson (performers) and Carl Grose (writer). You will have seen them in Kneehigh Theatre classics such as The King of Prussia, The Bacchae, Tristan and Yseult and The Red Shoes. We’re very excited to be welcoming them and their latest adventure to the Marine Theatre this February.

Classic Clapton are the world’s No.1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band. In their 27 years on the road they have become something of a rock institution, touring throughout the UK and across the world. They have appeared at both The Royal Festival Hall, London and at Glastonbury Festival. And from February they will be able to add the Marine Theatre to their list!

No Clapton tribute would be complete without an electrifying frontman and Classic Clapton have just that in Mike Hall (who not only sings and plays like Eric, he looks like him too!). Along with the rest of the band he stunningly recreates the whole of Clapton’s illustrious career, including Cream, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominos and Clapton’s solo work. Booking early is strongly recommended!

Edith Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 40s and 50s and remains France’s most popular singer. As the 50th anniversary of her death approaches, this powerful celebration of her life and work features many of the classics that made her a star; La vie en rose, Sous le ciel de Paris, Bal dans ma rue, Autumn Leaves, Padam Padam, C’est merveilleux, L’accordéoniste, Non je ne regrette rien and more. Piaf’s life was the stuff of legend, from her dramatic rise from Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Her story, however, is anything but La vie en rose.

‘Piaf’ features Eve Loiseau who, since her debut at the Royal Festival Hall in Feb 2002, has given recitals in England, New York and France as well as featuring on many radio networks across the world. She will be joined by Fiona Barrow on violin and Murray Grainger on accordion.

“All of Piaf’s best-loved songs, each performed impeccably and with genuine emotion.” ***** Broadway Baby

“Loiseau and her musicians are 5 star performers.” The Public Reviews

kid carpet & the noisy animals

oo

A rock ‘n’ roll musical for kids!

Gorilla is a bit argumentative and plays the drums.Badger has incredible legs and is a bit of a chatterbox.Bear thinks she’s from Manchester and needs to have a poo.Hedgehog isn’t saying anything but might be persuaded to later, if we’re nice.

Join Gorilla, Badger, Bear and Hedgehog as they make friends, play games, need to go to the toilet, contemplate the world and finally rock out at a grand dance contest. Involving some very lo-fi technological wizardry, Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals turns ordinary everyday toys into magical superstars with the aid of a video camera, comedy and punk rock. It’s a rock ‘n’ roll theatre extravaganza that stretches across the nation!

With several fantastic events already under its belt, “See-Play-Do” continues to bring the best in theatre for children, young people and families to the Marine Theatre. Don’t forget there are plenty of opportunities to join in too, with messy sessions, workshops and lots, lots more. For other events in this series see page 22.

Not content with watching? Then you can join in too! Running at the theatre from 2pm onwards, pop along, say hello and join in with one of our free activity workshops. We’ll have the kettle on for Mum and Dad too!

LYT will be performing this challenging new play at the Marine Theatre before taking it to Plymouth Theatre Royal in May.

Jim Cartwright is a multi-award-winning playwright whose work is consistently performed around the world and has been translated into over 35 languages. He has written successfully for film, television and radio and his stage work has been performed at The National Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre, the West End and on Broadway. Dad is growing old disgracefully. Catherine has a life to live and Mr Right to find. The last thing either of them need is someone getting in the way….

In a country with a rapidly aging population, where pension plans and life plans don’t match up, who’s going to look after our parents? What are you going to do with yours?

Using puppets, Super 8 projection, upsidedown physicality and a Space Hopper, ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ charts the erratic course of a daughter’s love for her father through thick and thin. Snatching unexpected warmth and humour from the jaws of a desperate and complex situation, this is a sharp, yet sensitive show with a sizzling soundtrack.

“Full of music, movement, film, dextrous puppetry and gentle laughs.” The Guardian

I’m making a decision. I’m changing things. This is it. Three old friends. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, life will never be the same again. A day-glo trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. The words of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score. A play about life, love and losing your mind.

Kate Tempest is the UK’s most exciting performance poet, currently serving up a storm in the UK hip-hop scene with her band Sound Of Rum. Brought to the Marine thanks to a collaboration between some of the country’s best theatre producers, “Wasted” is her debut play and features her trademark lyrical ferocity in a dynamic theatrical staging.

sam carter

When we spotted Sam Carter on Jools Holland’s “Later” last Autumn we couldn’t wait to get him along to the Marine Theatre. And we’re not the only ones who’ve been impressed. Since he released his debut album “Keepsakes” in 2009, there has been a mounting excitement about this songwriter, guitarist and singer.

At the time he was an Emerging Artist In Residence at The Southbank Centre in London. Since then he has supported Bellowhead on a UK tour, performed in the Middle East and UK with the British Council’s “Shifting Sands” project, played to thousands as part of the all-star lineup for the tour “The Lady: A Homage To Sandy Denny”, performed on major venue and festival stages in his own right and walked away with the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. And his arrival hasn’t gone unnoticed by some of the finest singer-songwriters and guitarists in the world today. In the three years since “Keepsakes” was released he has performed alongside Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, Chris Wood and Martin Simpson.

“Three years on [from his debut album Keepsakes] the exemplary musicianship is bolder, the vocal arrangements more striking…as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work” 9/10 Uncut

Once again celebrating Lyme’s significance as the birthplace of palaeontology, the Marine Theatre plays host to Lyme Regis Museum’s series of popular talks and lectures on the amazing story of prehistoric life on the Jurassic Coast. This year Stefanie Klug of the University of Bristol uncovers the secrets of Jurassic sharks, whilst Matt Friedman of the University of Oxford tells the story of the Coelacanth fish, a ‘living fossil’ once thought to be extinct for 65 million years yet still swimming the world’s oceans.

Lyme’s own Richard Edmonds, Earth Science Manager for the Jurassic Coast, will kick off the proceedings explaining why our coast is so important and Tom Sharpe of the National Museum of Wales tells the story of Lyme Regis’s early fossil collectors, including the Philpot family, who sponsored Mary Anning and funded the construction of the Lyme Regis Museum.

To end, Sir Crispin Tickell, diplomat, academic and expert in global change explains the Anthropocene, the latest geological era and the future of its dominant species: us.

Lyme Regis Museum, where there will be activities for children and a chance to see rare fossils, including the ‘Philpot Fish’ (kindly loaned by the Oxford University Museum) will be open all day with free entrance.

With material from Romania, Macedonia, Brittany, Malta, Mexico, Scotland, Italy, Turkey, Finland, Bulgaria and more, audiences can also expect a few original songs from singer and accordionist Jim Carey, who has created inspirational music for the likes of Kneehigh and Miracle Theatre. Based in Cornwall, BragaTanga were the Eden Project’s House Band for last year’s Time of Gifts event. James Sherwood is one of the UK’s foremost musical comedians. If you like your comedy tuneful, or your music hilarious, his latest show is a must-see. A veteran of six consecutive Edinburgh Festivals and a regular presence across television and radio, James taps out his “acclaimed, inspired ditties” (Three Weeks) in a beguiling evening of comic song and biting satire at the Marine Theatre. “His entire set, from humorous songs to witty repartee, is beautifully, painstakingly sculpted. There’s no flab and no filler” The Scotsman

“A distinguished gentleman comic if ever there was one… he rarely strays from his piano stool, where he knocks out a series of imaginative musical jokes and beautifully-crafted original comedy songs. But don’t mistake him for some tired old cabaret act. He may look old-fashioned, but the material he offers is fresh, contemporary and pin-sharp original” The Guardian

We’re very pleased to welcome back Concerts in the West with their exceptional series of classical music concerts to the Marine Theatre. For the other Concerts in the West event this spring, please see page 13.

Featuring Gavin Kibble (cello), The Ianus Consort will perform repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries – Bach, Handel, Telemann and Haydn.

Gavin Kibble is at the beginning of his career as a cellist, specialising in historically informed performance. He gained degrees first from Oxford University, where he was at Magdalen College with Laurence Dreyfus and then from the Royal Academy of Music, where his teacher was Jonathan Manson. In 2011 he was selected to take part in the Académie Européenne de Musique, which saw him performing in Acis and Galatea at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under Leonardo García Alarcón. Gavin plays 19th century repertoire on period instruments with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique of Saintes and has appeared with the London Handel Orchestra, the Amphion Consort, Musica Poetica London and Oxford Baroque.

A full moon rises over a windswept cottage in the middle of nowhere. The children are in bed, the wine is breathing nicely and the dinner is in the oven...

It’s Gordon and Celia’s wedding anniversary. They’ve asked their oldest and dearest friends Zach and Jane down from London. The only problem is that Zach and Jane aren’t Zach and Jane anymore. Jane has gone and Julia – a twenty-five-year-old French burlesque dancer – has taken her place.

What starts as a simple celebration quickly unravels with one revelation after another until we become aware that no one has been telling the truth to anyone about anything for a very long time.

Written entirely in his characteristic verse by BBC 6 Music poet in residence Murray Lachlan Young, The Incomers will have you gasping and roaring with laughter in equal measures!
