most of us wouldnt think twiceabout relaxing with a glass ofmerlot afer a hard day, but wemight be a little more hesitantabout jumping into a pool of it. notso in hakone, Japan, where guestsat the yunessun spa resort arelining up to soak in hot tubs full ofeverything from red wine and saketo cofee and green tea. the winepool even comes complete with a12-foot bottle, so guests can enjoy aglass or two as they splash around.the spa claims that cleopatra was a big fan of bathing in winebecause it rejuvenates the skin, while swimming in sake can removefreckles and age spots. looks fun,but well stick to drinking it, thanks.

who knew? competitive surgery toget a date
Its designer handbags at dawn in Hong Kong, where a shortage of eligible men isforcing the citys 200,000 single females to go to extreme lengths to fnd a husband. Hundreds are signing up to dating agencies linked to South China, where theirchances are better because decades of the one-child policy have resulted in high ratiosof men to women. But most worrying is the sudden rise in cosmetic clinics to supplydemand for double eyelid procedures. Te much-coveted Caucasian eyelid surgeryis now increasingly recognised as a sign of female beauty and wealth in Asia.
TheTruThabouTFemaleKillers
as the recent cases ofamanda Knox and Joanna Dennehy revealed, societyis endlessly obsessed withthe idea of the female
killer. Criminologist DavidWilson explains why
Marie Claire: How common is it for awoman to kill?David Wilson: By and large, murderremains a young mans business. Mostfemale murderers are domestic murderers they kill those intimate to them, childrenor partners, in fts of passion. Femaleserial killers defned as those who notonly murder three times but disengage forat least 30 days between each murder andlive a normal life in between are veryrare. Te number in the UK, such as MyraHindley and Rose West, is in single digits, and they acted out their crimes with men.MC: Why, if we know women are capable of murder, do cases such as Joanna Dennehyand Amanda Knox still cause such shock?DW: Most people still fnd it difcult tostomach the truth that some women arecapable of extreme cruelty in pursuit ofsexual gratifcation, in the way men are.Knoxs guilty verdict is still hotly debated, with many believing she is innocent, and
she is due to appeal against herconviction. If we assume the guilty verdictis correct, both she and Dennehy comeunder the category of spree killers, who, in the pursuit of their own sexualsatisfaction, temporarily blurred the linesbetween fantasy and reality. MC: So it seems sex was the incentive?DW: We know sex was at the root andwas the context in which the murderstook place, but it was more about power.Dennehy was obsessed with the idea ofraping men, sexual humiliation and porn.Whether Knox is guilty or not, we doknow she was consumed by the idea ofsexual power and control over others. Im the only criminologist to have readKnoxs private prison diary after herinitial arrest, which showed her to be,among other things, preoccupied by herown sexual power and completely devoidof empathy for others sufering classictraits in many female murderers.
MC: So there are qualities that femalemurderers have in common?DW: Every case is unique, but often theyhave underlying mental-health problems.Dennehy, for example, had been broughtto the attention of mental health servicesas having an antisocial personality disorder.Knoxs diary revealed she also had apersonality disorder, exhibiting extremeegocentric narcissism and a need to bethe centre of attention. She comparedherself to Helen of Troy and MotherTeresa, and believed everyone was in lovewith her, even her prison guards. Her lack of empathy was most startling. Hersupposed friend Meredith was almostabsent from her diary mentioned justonce. Knox may be innocent, but she alsoexhibited techniques of what we call neutralisation, which we see in manymurderers. Tey claim they cant rememberthe moment of their victims death becausethey were on a high or blacked out. n
