Dear Parents, Students and Friends Next week is the final week of Term One. Many at school have been commenting on how quickly the term has flown. Students in Year 12 do not need to be reminded about that as they are well into mid-course exams and are at the mid way point of their final year of school! My reflections on this term are one of a community who seems settled and purposeful. Going about our business in an orderly manner, calmly and by and large happily. I have heard comments that it has been the best start to a year for a long time. It is very hard to pinpoint why this feeling is apparent but everyone has played a part and I congratulate students and staff and the support of parents in purveying this attitude. May it continue for a long time! One of our teachers Mr Neville presented to staff recently a reflection on some of the amazing achievements of students and staff this term. He wanted us to remember that good things both large and small are happening around us and we should not underestimate the value of these contributions in helping to build such a positive community spirit. I have included excerpts from the presentation on the next page. On Wednesday April at 1pm the College will be holding our Easter Mass in the Marcellin Hall, you are invited to join us as we near the finish of our Lenten journey as Christians around the world prepare for the Easter Celebrations of our greatest feast day. Our Chaplain Fr Rafter will say Mass for us. The Marian Catholic College Council AGM was held last Monday and the following parent representatives were returned: Nigel Kennedy, Michael Favero, Brendan Catanzariti and Simon Aventi (as the staff representative) and Lindy Golden . Michael Ryan is continuing as Chairperson and new member is. Fr Grace represents Fr Rafter on the Parent Council. On behalf of the College I wish to thank Mrs Janice Seton for her involvement on the committee, especially her work as Secretary at Parent Council meetings. There are a vacancies still to be filled so if anyone wishes to apply, please contact our office. Marian Catholic College has installed CCTV in various places around the school. This decision has been made to ensure the safety of college property including the personal possessions of staff and students. Last year there was a break in and from time to time damage has occurred which has increased our insurance costs and having cameras in key locations will provide safety for all and reduce the related premiums. The cameras will become active on 13 April. A copy of the notice to our community is further along in this newsletter. Peace and Best Wishes Principal

Principal

Lord, make me a channel of disturbance

Where there is apathy, let me provoke

Where there is compliance, let me bring questioning

Where there is silence, may I be a voice

Where there is too much comfort and too little action,

grant disruption

Where there are doors closed and hearts locked,

great willingness to listen

Where laws dictate and pain is overlooked

When tradition speaks louder than needs

When we refuse to take control of our lives

Our own church

Our own poor

Disturb us, O Lord and teach us to be radical

Grant that I may seek rather to do justice than to talk about it

To be with, as well as for, the poor,

To love the unlovable as well as the lovely

To accept responsibility to be church

Lord, make me a channel of disturbance.

Where do you look for inspiration?

It is in the determination to succeed we saw in our ever growing athletics carnival… 27 records

It is past students still achieving and being recognised for their efforts in school by others

Inspiration is found constantly in the kids that come together to make a difference and start teaching us! A valuable lesson on what we can do with our spare time.

Inspiration can be found in the care that our school community shows and how it pours into the larger community.

24th March 2015

Marian College students

played Touch Football

against Mater Dei College,

Kildare College, Xavier

College and St Francis College

on a wet day in Wagga at

Jubilee Park. Andre Boon,

Angela Hartley, Jonathan

Morris and Nadine Scarfone

were the teachers that

coached on the day.

Marian was a challenging team to play with 4 students making the representative team: Blake Schaefer, Matthew Culla,

Jordan Sartor and Daniel Rosetto. These students will be participating in the Combined Catholic Colleges Championships

for a chance to be selected in the All Schools State Championships for the State Team.

Stand outs for the Under 15’s girls’ team were Suzanne Rinaldo and Sarah Sully. The team convincingly beating Xavier

College although going down to both Wagga rivals. The team demonstrated dramatic

improvements throughout the day.

The junior boys played 4 great games of touch against tough opposition. The boys

improved dramatically throughout the day narrowly going down to the eventual

winners in the final game.

The senior girls had four strong games, demonstrating commitment and determination as the rain got heavier and the competition got tighter, although only taking one win against Xavier College. Stand outs on the day were Jaclyn Agostini and Samantha Graham as well as try scorers Kayla Charles and Sabine Mazzarolo.

The Open boys started well against St Francis although went down 4 tries to 3 which to the boys credit was a game well played. Playing Xavier Collage all the boys were warmed up and amped for the game, we showed that we are a team to reckon with coming away with a win with 5 tries scored to 2. The last game of the day was against Kildare Collage who were the best team of the day they had won out right with no loses, unfortunately we were not able to stop them with a hard battle fought try for try.

The College Tennis Team traveled to Wagga to participate in the Wagga Diocese Catholic Schools competition. The girls

had their backs up against the wall from the start of the day traveling with one team mate short. Annaliese Quarisa

walked away with wins in all her singles matches, with Stella and Chloe put in courageous efforts playing with great

sportsmanship all day. The boys team were up against some very talented tennis players. 'Team Savage' (Cooper,

Gamaine and Jordan) alongside Brady Chambers were able to walk away with a team win over our local rivals St Francis.

These students should be commended for their outstanding behavior and the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the day. They were a true credit to the Marian spirit.

Chief Tennis Coach, Mr Moore

Great start to the Chess season!

Marian Catholic College competed in a chess competition with Coleambally Central School.

The Score was MCC - 21/2 and Coleambally Central School - 11/2

Marian Catholic College winning the match. Coleambally Central being a tough team to beat in the past!

Great team effort!

Two Marian Catholic College Students have cut and donated their hair to provide wigs for cancer sufferers. Nicole Bruss and Ruby Zandona, both girls have been personally touched by cancer, which was one of the main reasons they decided to take the plunge.

It is such a great effort and a wonderful act of kindness.

Good Fellows Workshop

Year 8 and 9 students attended a Goodfellas “Conversations with young men that matter” workshop. Martin Harper of Goodfellas Education informed students some interesting facts and stories about young men who have achieved extraordinary things. The purpose of the session is to bust the myth that “all boys are trouble”. Another

focus of the session is bust the myth that “real men don’t cry” by looking at world leaders that use emotion to show strength. The boys were also encouraged to be discriminating in the pictures and information they see and read

and to avoid feeling pressured by the often unrealistic male body images that are portrayed in the media.
