Christmas every year is a busy time in SnB - getting ready for Christmas Con-
certs (see page 4), Santa visits the school (see page 5), Remembrance Tree set-
ting up and Lighting Up Ceremony (see page 6), Parish Carol Service, Carol
Singing outside O’Donovan’s Hotel for “Just One”, Carol Singing for the Annu-
al GAA mass, Carol Singing in Bushmount, Christmas Magazine etc etc.
However this year was completely different as we decided (urged on by Ms.
Karen O’Regan, whose idea it was) to release a single - celebrating coming
home to Clonakilty for Christmas. Little did we realise where the single would
take us over the coming month.
At the end of November we recorded the single in Lettercollum Recording Stu-
dios with the tremendous assistance of
John Fitzgerald (past pupil) - who
also produced the single. Ms. Karen
O’Regan not only sang lead vocals
but also arranged all the harmonies.
12 staff members in total sang on the
CD, plus past pupil Jack Archbold
who provided percussion and parent
Margaret Deegan who played the
haunting flute pieces throughout the
song. Then John came to the school
to record the boys singing.
The Examiner came to visit and photographed and vide-
oed the song. The YouTube video now has over 7275
hits. Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice and her class uploaded
the “Official Video” a week later showing the recording
process and beautiful scenes of Clonakilty. This has now
over 5600 hits!
Within a week the song with no radio play - just social
media assistance (especially from Flor McCarthy who
set up a special website to support the song) reached
number 48 in the Irish Charts. This was just the begin-
ning!

C103fm with a little encouragement from Eileen Kingston invit-
ed us to the studio in O’Donovan’s Hotel on the 5th of December
to play the song live. The only stipulation was .. we could only
bring 10 people (so we brought 15) - 5 boys - one from each class,
8 staff, Jack Archbold and
Margaret Deegan. It was
a great success. Patricia
Messenger loved the song
and our performance, and
played the song on her
showed throughout De-
cember and even played it
on her special Christmas
Eve programme. She also
complimented the boys and the staff again. Eugene Scally ar-
ranged to have the song played in Supervalu every 25 minutes
(thanks Eugene and John Coleman). But there was more to
come!!
That same night we launched the song at the Remembrance Tree
Lighting Up Ceremony. The boys also sang many other carols
and Christmas songs. Spiller’s Lane was packed to capacity with
the Mayor of Clonakilty Colette Twomey, Monsignor O’Dris-
coll and Mrs. Noreen Minihan (Chairperson of the BOM) all
in attendance.
The following Monday we received a phone call from Kevin
McAnally asking us to perform five songs at the Cork Opera
House, supporting the West Cork Ukulele Orchestra! We rose
to the challenge and now with twenty
boys and all the staff who sang on
Home, we rehearsed and rehearsed,
ably lead by Karen O’Regan and were
ready….. or nearly. We had to first
sing in the Parish Carol Service with
seventy boys! This was a great success
despite some hitches with sound, false
starts (yours truly!). It was great prepa-
ration for what to come.
We arrived at the Cork Opera House early - two hours before our
performance and were shown our dressing room. We watched the
West Cork Ukulele Orchestra set up and sound check. It was
fascinating.
Then it was our turn. We sound checked for about 8 minutes and
looked out into the auditorium - ENORMOUS! One of the boys
was told it held 937 people. We believed him. And then we were
told it was SOLD OUT! 8 o’clock came and we went on stage to
(Continued from page 1)
rapturous applause. That was encouraging at least.
We played our set and we were excellent - boys,
staff, Margaret and Jack. We did ourselves and the
school proud. It was a really marvellous occasion -
one I don’t think the boys or staff will ever forget.
Then we got the chance to sit in the audience and
watch the West Cork Ukulele Orchestra perform
their set. They were also brilliant!
Thanks to Debbie and Ivan and Craig Bateman
and to Kieran and Liz O’Regan who provided
refreshments for the boys when they came off stage.
Thanks also to Mark Coombes for photographing
the occasion (see page 9). Thanks to Tina Aherne
for photographing c103fm and Spiller’s Lane.
And finally… all 500 copies of the CD were sold!

On Friday 21st of November 5th and 6th class went
orienteering in Fota wildlife park, but don’t worry it
wasn’t with the animals but around the house and
gardens! I’m not sure about 5th class but the 6th class
got to see a buffalo at one of the points! We did very
well considering the weather conditions. It was
very, very wet, boggy and the rain was lashing
down. The top three for fifth class in our school
were Conor Daly, Cian Scally and Cian Downey.
The top three for sixth class were Stephen O’ Hea,
Eoghan Ferguson and Liam Crowley. We were de-
lighted with ourselves and well done to everyone
who took part. We met Mr O’Brien at the start
which was great. Many thanks to
Thelma, who organised the buses
and to Ms.O’Shea, Ms. O’Keeffe
and Ms. Fitzmaurice who came
with us on the day. The day was a
great success! By: Craig Bateman Click here

In 4th/5th class we were studying autobiographies and I brought
in a book written by my Granddad, Mr John Sexton “All in a
lifetime”.
Ms O’ Regan suggested I invite him in to the class to read a
piece from his book and answer some questions. When asked
why he wrote the book he answered that he wanted to put to-
gether the events that happened in his lifetime. It is based on
his life growing up in Courtmacsherry. It is unique that while
Grandad is a farmer, he has been over 50 years reporting with
the Southern Star. He loves English and he enjoys writing.
The book is available in all local bookshops, the ideal Christ-
mas present.

in the above amount.

Infants will start collecting later in the year. Thanks to Eileen
O’Donovan for her assistance.
Children in Rang 6 will use this scheme for saving for their Surfing

Thanks to all the staff of SnB for producing marvellous shows again this
year. They were really brilliant and the boys one and all were a credit to
their class. Thanks to Mrs. Elaine Connolly for introducing the Concerts on
both days.
Thanks to the Sound and Lighting crews. Thanks to Josie Files for accompa-
nying the classes on piano. Thanks to Finbarr O’Connor for his work on the
stage. Thanks to you the parents for the wonderful costumes you created.
As you know a collection was made at the door for the St. Vincent de Paul
Society. A total of €839.24 was raised over the 2 days. Many thanks for
your generosity.
A number of boys in the school are allergic to nuts and for them any contact
with nuts or products containing traces of nuts can be dangerous for exam-
ple NUTELLA!!!!
Please be aware of this when organising your child’s lunch and if possible
do not allow your child to bring anything containing nuts to school. Your
help in this matter is very much appreciated.
p.s. Please give your children water to drink coming to school - not
sweet or fizzy drinks.
Parents: now that children are back in school, please be vigi-
lant and check your child’s hair regularly for headlice. If
you find any please notify the school and we will send a
note to all parents in that class.
It would be so much safer if you did not bring chil-
dren across the road by the hand at 3.00 p.m. often
crossing between cars and traffic, which can be danger-
ous and may even encourage another child to attempt
the same on his own with possible disastrous conse-
quences.
Please, always use the wardens, when on duty and, at
the very least, the zebra crossing which is there for this
purpose.
Thank you.

These boys have made an extra effort to be polite and “gentlemanly” during the month of November and December. Some of the pho-
tos are missing as there was just no enough time to take them in December. We’ll be back on track again this Friday.
