FROM THE AUCTION CHAIRS

Dear Maret Community,

Anchors Away & Full Speed Ahead! We are excited to welcome you to Under the Sea, the 2017 Maret Scholarship Auction.

The Auction is a long-standing Maret community event that raises funds for our student scholarship program. With 24% of our talented students receiving aid, the success of the Scholarship Auction embodies the commitment of our community to promote equity and inclusiveness. We are proud that 100% of the Auction proceeds go directly to scholarship grants.

Our very hard-working teams of volunteers dove deep into the depths of this Auction project and have gathered an exciting collection of treasures large and small. We hope that these special offerings will capture your imagination, and that you heed the siren’s call and bid often and raise your cards high during our Live Auction experience. And, don’t miss the Maret tradition of contributing to Fund-a-Scholar, a moving part of the evening in which everyone has the opportunity to directly contribute to financial aid. No pearl is too big or too small.

We are touched by the incredible generosity of our volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this celebration a success. Thank you to our seafaring leaders who guided us through the seven seas and back, our intrepid Live Chairs Emily Lenzner ‘88 and Miles Fawcett ‘88, our wonderful Silent Chairs Candice Blackford and Ana Greenstein, and our creative and imaginative decorations team led by David Daniel and Bob Braddock. Thank you also to the Development Office navigation station, where Director of Constituent Relations Marilyn Potts and Director of Development Sally Dunkelberger helped us navigate all types of waters to arrive at this special night. Thank you to the Maret Parents Association and the Maret faculty and staff for their consistent support. And, lastly, we thank our fearless captain, Head of School Marjo Talbott, and the Board of Trustees for charting an incredible course for our school that renews and inspires us all.

Let’s now dive together Under the Sea!

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends,

Prepare yourselves for an incredible adventure Under the Sea! The 2017 Maret Scholarship Auction will transport you to a magical world of color, movement, and fantastical sites.

Year after year, everyone at Maret comes together to make the Auction a huge success. Our dedicated volunteers secure over 500 donations, create exciting items in the Live Auction, and transform our campus with their ingenious and beautiful decorations. Along the way, they help to build an even stronger and more inclusive school community. I take this opportunity to thank this year’s very seaworthy co-captains, Victoria and Franklin Wassmer, and their inspired crew of more than 100.

Every dollar that you contribute tonight will support the financial aid budget for the 2017–18 school year. The success of this Auction will bear directly on the decisions about tuition assistance grants to families that must be made this spring.

Ensuring that Maret continues to be a socioeconomically diverse community of learners is one of our top priorities. The collective talents and perspectives of our students create the vibrancy that is a hallmark of the School. We are proud that our commitment to financial aid ranks high in comparison to our peer schools. Currently, 24% of our students receive aid—and the Scholarship Auction supports nearly 20% of the financial aid budget. It is your generosity that makes this possible.

With that, I invite you to join our party Under the Sea. As you journey through the deep and enchanted ocean on this festive occasion, please bid enthusiastically on the hundreds of treasures that await you!

I look forward to seeing you.

My very best,

Marjo Talbott

105 AN INSIDERS LUNCH AT THE WILLARD FOR EIGHT WITH COKIE ROBERTS

The Willard Intercontinental Hotel is the grande dame of Washington hospitality. Just a block from the White House, countless presidents and dignitaries have passed through its doors. And now you can enjoy a lunch for eight and learn all of the building’s—and some of Washington’s—secrets from award-winning journalist (and Maret grandmother) Cokie Roberts. 111 111 FUND-A-SCHOLAR

One of the highlights of the evening, Fund-a-Scholar directly supports Maret’s financial aid program. In its 13th year, this is one of the most moving moments to see the incredibly generous and wide-spread participation and shared commitment to a diverse, talented student body and an equitable and inclusive community. Fund-a-Scholar gifts contribute well over half of what’s raised at the Auction. Total proceeds from the Auction support approximately 20% of Maret’s financial aid budget each year. Thanks to your support of the Auction and Fund-a-Scholar, the financial aid budget continues to grow as Maret strives to meet the increasing demand for assistance.

Please raise your bid card at the level of $10,000, $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, $1,000, $500, $250, or $100. Multiple bids are of course more than welcome if you’re looking to make a larger contribution! Please consider what size gift is meaningful to you. All contributions make a difference in the lives of so many of our young scholars. In fact, every dollar that you contribute tonight will support the financial aid budget for the 2017–18 school year. Tonight’s success will impact financial aid decisions made this spring.

112 TEXAS HOLD ’EM PARTY FOR 500

For this night, denim and diamonds are optional, but a good poker face is required! Your party of 50 is invited to join your hosts at their house for a night of BBQ and tournament-style Texas hold ‘em where the winner walks away with the pot and school-wide bragging rights. No experience needed—a pro will be on hand with a refresher or to teach the novices the ropes. We are looking for a full-house (pun intended), so we hope you’ll deal yourself in on the fun. Dinner, drinks, poker, and good times.

This case of many hard to find vintage French wines and champagne, and rare Italian, Californian, and Australian offerings, provides a number of bottles that could be the centerpiece of many cellars. This is a spectacular list of wines that are ready to drink today, but could also improve with an additional 10–15 years in the cellar. Buyers of services or other intangible items will receive forms and, in some cases, a letter or certificate, containing information about claiming those items. By arrangement made at the Auction, large items that cannot be moved that night may be picked up between 9 am and 11 am on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Buyers are responsible for arranging delivery, unless otherwise specified.

Unless otherwise specified, the following conditions are applicable to all items offered at the Auction:

Unless otherwise noted, items and services are good for one year and must be used by February 25, 2018.

BIDDING PROCEDURESTo bid on an item, the bidder places his/her bid stickers on the appropriate bid sheet. Bidding starts at or above the opening bid stated on the item’s bid sheet. Nonconforming or illegible bid numbers will be deemed invalid.

If the Guaranteed Bid function is used, the item is considered sold and the bid sheet is removed from the table.

If the Guaranteed Bid is not used, the highest valid bid entered on the bid sheet for that particular item before closing time will be considered the winning bid.

No bids may be entered on a bid sheet once a category has been officially closed by the auctioneer.

In the event of a dispute, a designated Auction official will have sole and final authority to determine the successful bidder or re-offer the item for sale.

LIVE AUCTION PROCEDURESThe Live Auction will begin during dinner and will continue without interruption until every item has been auctioned.

To enter a bid, the bidder raises his/her bid card to the attention of the Auctioneer or one of the spotters, who will relay the bid to the Auctioneer.

The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer is the purchaser.

The Auctioneer will have the sole discretion to determine the successful bidder. In the case of a dispute, the Auctioneer may—but need not—re-offer and resell the item in dispute.

If the Auctioneer determines that an opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article being offered or not equal to the minimum set by the donor, the Auctioneer may reject the bid and withdraw the item from sale.

At the fall of the Auctioneer’s gavel, title to the article passes to the highest bidder, who thereby assumes full risk and responsibility for the item.

The bidder whom the Auctioneer designates as the winner will be asked to confirm the winning bid and sign the winner’s certificate. Payment for Live Auction items shall be made to the Exchequer in accordance with checkout procedures.

NOTE: Checkout will not be open until close of Live Auction.

OPTIONAL PRE-PAY AT CHECK-INWe encourage guests to pre-pay for Auction purchases by swiping their credit card at Auction check-in. Guests must still go through checkout to claim their Auction purchases and will receive a printed statement of all charges. No charges will be billed if no purchases are made. The pre-pay option will result in reduced credit card processing costs (resulting in more net profit in support of financial aid), will allow for a more timely reconciliation of credit card charges, and will help streamline checkout.

CHECKOUTThe Auction Partner will determine the results of the bidding. Checkout for the Silent and Live Auctions will take place in the Old Gym beginning at close of Live Auction. Upon payment, the bidder will be given a receipt and a gift certificate (or its equivalent), or the item itself, as appropriate. Items will not be released without proof of purchase. All items must be paid in full and claimed the night of the Auction, in accordance with the General Rules. Fund-a-Scholar receipts will be mailed after the Auction.

ABSENTEE BIDS FOR SILENT AND LIVE AUCTIONForms to place advance bids are included with this catalog; additional forms may be obtained from the Maret Development Office or online. Absentee bids for Auction items will be accepted in the Development Office if received before 12 pm on Friday, February 24, 2017. Absentee bids may be faxed to 202.939.4063 or may be emailed to [email protected].

Absentee bid requests must be accompanied by credit card information and signature. If the absentee bid is the winning bid, the item will be automatically billed to the designated credit card.

Absentee bids for Silent Auction items will be entered on the appropriate bid sheet by 6:15 pm, Saturday February 25, 2017. Absentee bids on Live Auction items will be given directly to the Auctioneer and will establish a floor for the opening bid.

TAX INFORMATIONGenerally, the charitable deduction for the purchase of any Auction item is limited to the amount paid in excess of the items fair market value. Buyers, as well as donors, should consult with a tax advisor for definitive advice concerning deductibility. Fund-a-Scholar contributions are tax deductible in full.

Auction receipts include, for each item purchased, the amount the bidder paid and a good-faith estimate of the item’s fair market value. The fair market value of items is available prior to the Auction, upon request, from the Development Office. In most instances, the estimate is made on the donor’s representations. If the donor failed to provide such an estimate, the Auction Committee will provide one. The IRS may disagree with any estimate, particularly in the case of an unusual item or one not made generally available to the public. Committee members are not professional appraisers. Neither they nor Maret School assume responsibility for the accuracy of a valuation.

Purchasers should retain their Auction receipts for tax purposes. The School will also acknowledge contributions of more than $250 and all Fund-A-Scholar contributions after the Auction. Donors of Auction items who intend to claim a tax deduction should retain a copy of their Auction donation form and their acknowledgement, if applicable.
