MARDEN CHURCH FETE We would like to thank all those people who attended Marden Church Fete on Saturday 20th June. Leading up to
the fete many people had draw tickets to sell we are very grateful to those who sold them and to those who bought
them. Some sold a few and some more but Sandra Gladwyn topped us all by selling a record 376 books before the
day. This Grand Draw boosts our fete to help us raise well over £1000 that helps to keep the church in Marden
parish sustained. Below is the list of winners of the 41 prizes so generously given by people in the parish. The PCC
of Marden Church & Amberley Chapel are indebted to you all.

GARDEN TIP OF THE MONTH I have never been a lover of Peonies, they get huge and uncontrollable in a small garden, give them a huge space
oundand amongst everything else they look great, each to his own!
Usually you find them in gardens of large houses with huge gardens, it can be a show stopper, as can the tree peony.
It is said that they stand a lot of neglect, maybe that is why I do not like them!
They come in four main groups. Most of the ones that we grow are the Perennial herbaceous types. These are all
as they say blowsy types, the Peony has been a since Victorian times.
They are resilient and easy to grow, they have a deep tuberous root that can store moisture and nutrients this being
the reason they are so easy to grow! From the moment they send up their new shoots up in many different colours,
they attract attention. They grow to a height of three feet and they usually bloom from May to June, while the
flowers can be four inches across. Younger plants have a smaller bloom, and most are scented, but I am told that
this is a personal thing. There is a wild one with single flowers which many people like, these usually flower early
in the year, one variety called Paeonia is often known as Molly The Witch. When the shoots come through they are
red and later turn a smoky green. They have seed pods and with their autumn foliage are useful to flower arrangers.
All of the Peony family can stand a bit of neglect but if you look after them they obviously give a better result, and
that is what we want.
The Tree Peony is a strong growing plant with flowers reaching seven inches across. They grow to around six feet
and the flowers are usually yellow although I believe you can get another colour.
Herbaceous border types like sun and fertile soil but do not like Acid or warterlogged soil. Dead head as usual.
Some of the old types have weak stems and will need support. Little pruning is needed, just a tidy up. You can make
more plants by dividing, that is cut them into sections, but always make sure that you have more than one shoot on
each piece otherwise they can take longer to recover.
This plant is not too fussy, just likes normal care and soil plus a bit of tidying up and will give you pleasure for
many years.

Marden News and Views – June 2015
The Wildside of Marden As June progressed the weather started to improve and the warmer days started to appear much to everyone’s relief;
plant, animal and human. The insects have appeared in their thousands and on the muggy days the skies are full of
swooping swallows who are nesting and chattering in most of the outbuildings. I have not seen any house martins
although we used to get many under our eaves. Our bird feeders have also been full of the usual variety but we have
been plagued by squirrels who have found ingenious ways of how to extract feed from the supposed squirrel proof
ones that are now dented and show signs of squirrel teeth marks and we have had to chain the feeders to stop the
squirrels throwing them to the ground. I did a little experiment to see where they were all coming from. I put out a
bucket of hazel nuts that I had collected last year. We discovered that we were being hit by at least two families
from different directions. When they came it was squawking battle stations with a lot of tail flicking. Usually the
southern ones conceded to the northern crowd. The bucket was emptied in 24 hours. Talking of pests I was speaking
to someone about magpies and I said I would research them on line to see what devastation they caused to small
bird populations and what can be done about it. Here is what I found out: Quote: The RSPB commissioned the
British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to analyse its 35 years of bird monitoring records. The study found that
songbird numbers were no different in places where there were many magpies from where there are few. It found
no evidence that increased numbers of magpies have caused declines in songbirds and confirms that populations of
prey species are not determined by the numbers of their predators. Availability of food and suitable nesting sites
are probably the main factors limiting songbird populations. However, can anything be done to control numbers;
RSPB quote: Legal control methods involve trapping or shooting. Larsen trap, a type of cage trap, is designed to
catch birds alive and unharmed. It can be baited with food, or with a live decoy magpie, provided all welfare
regulations are met. Gun laws prevent shooting of magpies close to public roads and houses. The RSPB are not
opposed to legal, site-specific control of magpies, nor to the legal use of Larsen or other cage traps, as long as the
general licence conditions are strictly adhered to. All wildlife is, including Magpies, protected under the Wildlife
& Countryside Act 1981 and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. This makes it illegal to intentionally or,
in Scotland, recklessly take, injure or kill a magpie, or to take, damage or destroy an active nest or its contents. In
Northern Ireland, it is illegal to disturb birds at an active nest. However, they do raid nests and do eat small birds
with house sparrows being a favourite. We have many animals that we consider as pests as they can disturb or
destroy our work/land but I had a lovely encounter with one Mr Mole as I was mucking out a stable. There he was
in the stable with me trying to find an escape route his pink nose waggling and him big front feet paddling and his
velvet coat all soft and shiny. So I scooped him up in my poo scoop and popped him under the hedge where he
soon was digging himself into a secure hole. Jess T and The RSPB

MARDEN ARTS & CRAFTS
Flower Pounding is the title of this month’s hands-on session. Wendy Steadman and Sue Price will show us how to
use this fun and simple technique to transfer leaf and flower patterns, colours and shapes on to cloth. Members are
asked to bring a small hammer and a wooden board if they can. We look forward to seeing you on 27th July at
7.45pm to learn, what will be for many of us, a completely new craft.
Please note there will be no meeting in August
SB MARDEN HISTORY SOCIETY MARDEN MEMORIES is the title of the next meeting on Monday, 20th in the Community Hall at 7. 45pm. There
will be a slideshow presentation of a large number of slides from the extensive archive retained by the Society. This
particular selection is based on the first years of the Society dating from 1965 to 1971 and represents life in the
village at that time including carol singers, strawberry pickers and unusual weather conditions to name but a few.
Some of the older villagers may be able to provide names to many people represented.
Non-members are most welcome for the small charge of £2.00 to include tea, coffee and biscuits.
Please note that the Society does not meet in August.
CB MARDEN WI Our June meeting saw members setting off at intervals from the Community Centre in their cars to participate in a
car treasure hunt. The route took in villages such as Risbury, Pencombe and Ullingswick and found us looking at
war memorials, church notice boards and bus timetables in order to find the answers. It was a beautiful evening
with some spectacular views on the way. We returned to the Community Centre for a delicious ploughman’s supper.
The treasure hunt was great fun and enjoyed by all who took part. Thanks to Veronica Wright, Sue Price and Anne
Hartfield who devised the questions and Celia Clutterbuck for organising the refreshments.
Our next meeting on July 9th will be a Knit and Natter session so bring along your knitting or sewing or just come
along for a chat. Members are asked to bring along a plate of nibbles or cakes as a contribution towards the evening’s
refreshments. NB This is a change to the details in the programme. SB
MOTHERS UNION Rhoda Woodcock, one of our members, prepared an imaginative programme on Water & Water Aid, a fascinating
subject and in the developed world a commodity all too easily taken for granted.
She then elaborated on the consequences for so many in the developing world with no access to clean water- causing
so many health problems.
Numerous agencies are fully aware of this major problem and with some measure of success, including Oxfam and
Cafod (a Roman Catholic agency) who for the last 40 years have been involved in a basic water filter system,
relatively inexpensive and simple to work- and brings improved health and hygiene.
A collection of £72 was forwarded to Cafod EG
MARDEN & SUTTON OVER 60’s Wiltshire Farm Foods did a demonstration of their products. Tastings of dinners and puddings enjoyed by
everyone.
Arrangements for our outing to Evesham Country Park on July 2nd were discussed. Leaving the school at 10.45.
A quiz followed.
No meeting in August.

MARDEN GARDENERS
Our garden visit to The Vern on the afternoon of Wednesday 27th May 2015 was wonderful. Beautifully laid out on
the side of the river Lugg, both Rhododendrons and Azaleas were out in full bloom. Ranging from semi-formal
gardens to cultivated woodland walks the whole garden had an air of perfect peace about it. Many thanks are
extended to Mr and Mrs Evans for their kind invitation to us to visit their garden but also for their hospitality and
refreshments afterwards. Mr and Mrs Evans open their garden several times during the year in aid of charities or
good causes and I strongly recommend a visit.

DOG WALKERS TAKE NOTE!
Please note, that the stile at Sutton Walls has a dog gate attached too it and the wire fence to the side of the stile, has again,
been damaged by inconsiderate dog walkers. (footpath number MR 24)
This has been noted on several occasions by the Land owner of Marden Court, the Parish Footpaths Officer for Sutton St
Nicholas and PFO's For Marden.
Before the field was replanted with maize, it had grass and livestock on it and the sheep escaped on to Sutton Walls. This is a
costly exercise to replace the damaged section.
If anyone has any problems with any footpaths or Bridleways, the PFO's, will be more than happy to investigate and report
back to, either the Parish Council and the person making the complaint.
Mike Darley - Parish Cllr & Joint PFO for Marden

CHRISTIAN AID What a successful campaign we had together with 23 collectors and the support of again 300 householders,
we raised £1580.11, an all-time record.
This money will help to alleviate the lives of those struggling to survive in Ethiopia. Like one such widow,
who through the local Christian Aid partners and local community was given a cow. Her world began to
open up, giving her status and financial security as well as income and food for her family. “I feel so
happy, I feel I could cry”.
We are fortunate to live in a village with such generous people.
Thank you to all involved and to those who filled in their Gift Aid forms.
Elizabeth Gwynne
THANK YOU
Dave and Jess Tidball would like to say thank you to all those who came and took part in their service of
celebration and church blessing on their ruby wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful day and are so
grateful for all the lovely gifts and when we have sorted out our garden and created a place for all the ruby
wedding roses we shall ask everyone over for a coffee morning or tea to see the results, it may be a while
yet.
Regards Dave & Jess

Community Consultation Event for the Marden Neighbourhood Development Plan
Saturday 18 July 2 - 6 pm and Sunday 19 July 11 am - 4 pm
in the Community Centre Due to the changes in Herefordshire Council’s Core Strategy, the Marden Neighbourhood Development Plan now needs to define Settlement Boundaries for the hamlets of Burmarsh, Litmarsh and The Vauld and to consider allocating development sites within the hamlets. Overall Marden Parish now needs to identify sites for more housing than previously, as the target number has increased to 104 (with 69 remaining to be identified).
Please come to the Event and give your views – be part of the future of Marden Parish
MARDEN PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council met on 8 June and various items were discussed or noted including:
that the Lengthsman has filled various potholes between the main road and the scout hut, as a community
improvement to help with access to the scout hut;
a facility will be added to the parish website soon, which will mean people who register on the website will
receive emails informing them of new posts or information available on the website;
the defect on the Haywood’s Lane/Walkers Green junction, that is causing a noise when lorries drive over it,
has been referred for repair;
the problem of trees in the River Lugg has been discussed with the Environment Agency and sent on to the
EA’s Navigation Department, though it has been pointed out that if a landowner owns the river bank they
have a riparian responsibility to remove blockages from the river.
Planning applications
P151485/O, Land adjacent to Ashdown House, Marden – Proposed dwelling, garage and new access, the Council
objected to this application as it breaches current planning policy on building in open countryside.
Parish Freighter – Saturday 11 July 11:00 am – 1:00 pm in the Community Centre Car Park
Parish Council Donations
If you would like to apply for a donation to help keep your organisation or group running, please contact the Clerk
urgently. Donations will be considered at the July Parish Council meeting.
Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) Steering Group
There will be a Community Consultation event 18-19 July to get feedback on important changes to the Draft Plan.
Please see below for more information. Please attend this event as it is vital that comments and feedback are
received from as many parishioners as possible.
New Community Facilities Working Group
The Group met on 3 June and looked at the results of the questionnaire completed by the groups that use the
community centre, which highlighted that a café and internet access are facilities that people would like in any
new building. The next meeting of the Group is on Wednesday 8 July at 7:30 pm in the Community Centre. Please
come to meetings and help shape future facilities for the parish.
Speedwatch Initiative
The group of volunteers have done a number of sessions and noted vehicles going far too fast for the speed limits
in the village. The highest speed that has been noted so far and passed on to the police for action has been 43 mph
in the 30 mph limit! Please be a considerate and legal driver through the parish and keep to the speed limits. If you
would like to join this group, please contact the Parish Clerk.
Next Parish Council Meeting
The next meeting is at 7:30 pm on Monday 13 July at the Community Centre and all are welcome to attend.

Strawberry time!
S&A is once again supplying Marden Post Office & Stores with strawberries and these are available to buy now.
We hope you enjoy being able to purchase fresh local produce grown on your doorstep!
S&A Open Farm Sunday Event
This was the third year that S&A have participated in the LEAF “Open Farm Sunday” event and it was the most
successful to date! The number of visitors through our gate exceeded all expectations by reaching the grand total
of 620! With more activities and attractions this year, people stayed on the farm even longer and we were certainly
blessed with wonderful weather! We received extremely positive feedback in relation to visitors’ experiences of
Brook Farm and the event. Several visitors noted a tour of the packhouse as the most enjoyable part of their visit,
together with learning about pest control and pollination and viewing the various fruit plants on display. People
also made positive comments about the scale and appearance of our operation and how they enjoyed talking to S&A
employees. Thank you to those residents of Marden village who attended the event.
JUDE NORCOTT,
Community Relations Officer – S&A Produce (UK) Ltd.
Herefordshire Councillor’s Report I am most pleased to be re-elected and to be representing Sutton Walls Ward again. Indeed, I would like to thank everyone
who supported me. There has been a comprehensive two week schedule of training meetings, including mandatory training
for new and returning Councillors, which I attended. The first meeting of the Council was the Annual Council Meeting held
on 22nd May 2015. At this meeting the new Cabinet appointments were confirmed. Cllr. Tony Johnson remains as Leader of
the Council with Cllr. Patricia Morgan as Deputy Leader. The changes in the Cabinet include Cllr. Morgan moving to Health
& Wellbeing, Cllr. Graham Powell moving to Economy & Corporate Services and Cllr. Jonathan Lester has been appointed to
Young People & Children’s Wellbeing. The various roles on the Council’s Committees were agreed at this Council meeting
too. I have been appointed to the Council’s Planning Committee and Hereford & Worcester Fire Authority. Currently, I am
working through a long list of issues and concerns, which I collected from residents during the Election period. Update on some of the issues
1) Concerns about speeding traffic in Sutton Walls Ward, within the villages of Moreton on Lugg, Sutton St. Nicholas and
Marden. Marden - C1120 village road, in particular from Paradise Green Junction through the village & C1124 village road
from Marden to junction with C1125 - Reported to the Local Policing Team and requested that the Police do some speed
enforcement in the villages. My request has been passed onto the Safer Roads Partnership for their information and
consideration. As a result I’ve been advised that the Special Constables will now do some speed enforcement within the Ward
area. 2) Resurfacing Programme update. Venns Green U72619 road closure between 22/06/15 to 23/06/15. Awaiting response from
Balfour Beatty to enquiry about White House Close resurfacing. I’ve asked for a response regarding the request for the C1120
(Moreton to Marden road) to be scheduled for future resurfacing. 3) Reported potholes/defects at the following locations to Balfour Beatty; Little Paradise & White House Close, Walkers
Green, flooding/drainage issue on C1120 between Urdimarsh and the Vern. 4) Moreton Bridge & Laystone Bridge – I hope to arrange site visits at each bridge with our Locality Steward Phil Pankhurst
to view the problems and further discuss any possible/practical solutions to protect both listed bridges. Funding for Community Green Spaces now available “Herefordshire Council has re-launched its Public Green Spaces Community Grant Scheme to provide funding for local
community groups to maintain and enhance the County’s green spaces. The scheme, which was first developed last year in
response to reductions in grass cutting, offers a small fund of up to £750 to help local community groups within the County to
bring ideas and projects to life for maintaining and enhancing public green spaces. The scheme particularly aims to support
projects which incorporate community involvement and promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The deadline for all
applications is Friday 10th July 2015. To find out more information about the scheme and make an application please visit
www.herefordshire.gov.uk/grants” (Please contact me with any queries you may have on the above issues on: Tel: 01432 830577 or Tel:01568 -797148 email
