Dear All

We are now two weeks into the GCSE exams and our students have demonstrated the mature and focused approach we were confident they would. They are doing r eally well , and I hope that they al l have a good rest over the half term break in r eadiness for the r emainder of the exams.

Later this term we have an exci ting oppor tuni ty coming up for Year 10 students to tr avel dow n to Cambr idge Univer si ty where they w i l l stay at Jesus College, getting the chance to exper ience univer si ty l i fe. Our students w i l l have the oppor tuni ty to interact and spend time w ith undergraduates and academics from the univer si ty, and, through a r ange of social and academic activi ties, the hope is to broaden students? perspectives and encourage them to r eal ise their potential ahead of their f inal GCSE year.

We received exci ting news this week, that we have 37 nominations for the Nor th Tyneside Star Awards. Due to the unprecedented level of success which we have had, w ith nominations across al l categor ies and al l year groups, we are holding an awards assembly for the nominees on Monday 24th June. Members of Nor th Tyneside Learning Trust w i l l be ar r iving in school that day to award the students. This level of success, w ith students r ecognised for posi tive character istics and behaviours, is a wonder ful r eminder of al l the fantastic students we have at Marden. That the nominations have come from both students and staff at school, alongside outside nominations too, shows how highly our students are thought of in the community. They go over and above expectations so often so these awards are a welcome oppor tuni ty for students to share their successes w ith other s. We w i l l f ind out on the day i f any of the nominees have made i t to the f inal awards night in July. In the past two years we have had f inal ists at these awards therefore hope this year we can make i t three in a row. Well done to al l !

Good luck to al l students taking par t in the Duke of Edinburgh Award walk over the half term. They have been working hard w ith their preparations including Fir st Aid tr aining, and developing their new ski l ls and voluntar y work. The Award is open to Year 9 students each year , and is something our younger students look for ward to getting involved in.

At Marden High School we suppor t students w ith a w ide r ange of medical conditions. We would l ike to r emind parents that students should not be car r ying any medication in school unless by pr ior agreement for those w ith asthma, diabetes and al lergies. Where medication is absolutely necessar y for other conditions e.g. antibiotics, pain r el ief, we have tr ained staff who w i l l make ar rangements for safe storage and administr ation of medication. Parents are r esponsible for br inging medicines into school and we requir e w r i tten consent (form avai lable from Reception). Al l medicines should be in their or iginal packaging and clear ly labelled. Any quer ies please contact Mrs Sonia Thompson, Medications Off icer.

I t is always good to meet parents face to face to discuss how we are developing as a learning community, and so I would l ike to r emind you that our next Parents? Forum is on 20th June at 5.30pm. This is a good oppor tuni ty for parents to come into school to talk general ly about developments in the school. Past topics have included things such as homework which have then been incorporated into our School Development Plan. I f you would l ike to come along, please contact Mrs E. Scott at school.

Well done to al l the Year 7 and 8 athletes who competed at the Tynemouth Schools Competi tion last week. A total of 27 gir ls and 13 boys took par t and we are cur rently waiting for r esults to come through. The students need to be congratulated on their behaviour and atti tude as they proved to be f i r st class ambassadors for the school.

We have registered to r un a Unicef UK Playground Challenge for Year 7 students dur ing the summer term. Our new Year 10 Spor ts Prefects w i l l be devising a course and students w i l l donate money to take par t. A number of key pr izes w i l l be avai lable for the most successful attempts. More information to fol low on the website.

I hope al l our students have an enjoyable holiday, and we look for ward to seeing ever yone back r ested and rar ing to go on Monday 3rd June.

Thank you for your continued suppor t.

Media Studies Studio

Year 10 Media Studies students have begun research and planning for the Non-Exam Assessment component of their GCSE (30% of their f inal grade). Students w i l l have to create a product using iMovie or Photoshop, fulf i l l ing one of the fol low ing four br iefs aimed at 16-24 year olds: f i lm promotion for new teenage f i lm, a new f i tness or fashion magazine, the opening to a new TV documentar y or an indie music video. Year 10 are f inding the project ver y interesting and we are pleased w ith the outstanding level of matur i ty and independent study that they have under taken so far. The deadline for student?s work is 12 July 2019.

Meanwhi le, Year 11 Media Studies students have been working hard in the r un up to their exams, working on analysis of media language and representation in our set texts, and expanding their know ledge of media industr ies (including si tcom, app gaming and radio drama) and audiences. We w ish them the best of luck and know that their effor ts w i l l pay off on r esults day!

STEM & Media

Cross-Cur r icular Project

This year , a group of Year 7s are involved in a cross-cur r icular project between the Technology and Media depar tments; working in small teams on a carousel, their task was to create a digi tal media marketing campaign promoting careers in STEM.

This could promote STEM in school or STEM careers and also give Year 7 the oppor tuni ty to take par t in some practical Media Studies lessons and learn about the wor ld of media marketing.

The latest group learned about brand identi ty and the impor tance of a strong logo; then they spl i t into two teams for an ?Apprentice? style task, chosing team names and designing logos.

The f i r st team named themselves StemTrain, a name chosen as a symbol of r elentlessness, w ith i ts symbol being a tr ain that powered for ward.

Well done to all the Year 7s that have taken part in this project throughout the year!

They then presented to their peers as well as a staff panel, descr ibing what they had learned about marketing, brand identi ty, synergy and the effect of media campaigns, and also working to a tight deadline.

Both teams uti l ised their new logos on sleek poster designs, and one thing this group of Year 7s r eal ly excelled at was their excellent photography ski l ls.

With just a couple of lessons left, both teams f i lmed and edi ted promotional videos, show ing off their campaigns and descr ibing what STEM means to them.

Meanwhi le, the other team name was ini tial ly Diversity, w ith an emphasis on inclusivi ty and focusing on STEM jobs for al l , and although their r hetor ic r emained the same, they eventually changed their name to Different Perspective and adapted their logo design accordingly.

Ms Wallace

Year 10 business students have been thinking l ike managers and entrepreneurs this term w ith a var iety of problem-solving activi ties. Now that the students are bui lding their business know ledge and ski l ls, they are increasingly able to analyse a business problem and offer advice on the pros and cons of each possible course of action.

Making Good Business Sense

Hom ewor k club on a Monday luncht im e is now running ever y week.

This is an oppor tuni ty to complete homework independently w ith

special ist help from Miss Wallace on hand. I t?s a great way to make sure

learning from lessons is consolidated, students? questions are answered and business homework is handed in on

time.

Students also gave f inancial advice to a f icti tious character having problems w ith her cash f low and created a business plan for a stal l at the Jesmond Dene Food Market.

Know ledge and understanding of the

factor s that might affect the location of a business

culminated in an exercise to f ind sui table

The w inning team for the ini tial rounds w i l l walk away w ith 1000 merits for their house, w ith the overal l w inners gaining an additional 1500 merits!

The Marden Debate Club has i t 's biggest event of the year approaching. In July, House Teams w i l l be going head to head in a House Debate Competi tion.

Alnw ick and Dunstanburgh w i l l be debating the proposi tion that 'Feminism is no longer r equir ed in the UK in 2019'.

Bamburgh and Warkwor th are debating the proposi tion that 'democracy isn't the best form of government'.

Each team has a Year 9 student leader and an attached member of staff to help them prepare their arguments and anticipate what the opposi te side might say.

It will certainly be interesting to see the debate results!

Geography Wor ld

This term has been a busy one for the GCSE geographers. They have taken to their preparation ver y well and we w ish them

the best of luck w ith their exams.

Year 7 have turned their attention to plastic pol lution this term and there have been some great ideas about how to prevent fur ther plastic waste enter ing the ocean.

We have many budding environmental ists w ithin our school community and I have been par ticular ly impressed w ith how keen they are to get on top of their r ecycl ing.

REBr inging Learning to Li fe

This term in RE we have two upcoming tr ips planned for GCSE option groups...

Our cur rent year 10 students w i l l be visi ting Holy Island to explore the ideas of pi lgr image and worship in Chr istiani ty. This w i l l help them to consolidate their learning on Chr istian beliefs and practices, which they are completing a mock exam on dur ing exam week in June. Needless to say we are al l looking for ward to this, and i t w i l l be a much deser ved tr eat for them after al l of their hard work and focus this year.

The new GCSE option group who are cur rently in year 9 w i l l be given the oppor tuni ty to visi t Kagyu Samye Ling which is a Tibetan Buddhist temple in the Scottish borders. They w i l l be given a tour around the temple, explor ing meditation, worship and key beliefs. They w i l l also have the oppor tuni ty to exper ience Tibetan Buddhist chanting. This w i l l compliment the Buddhism aspect of the GCSE course where they have to learn about Buddhist bel iefs and practices.

Ms McLeod

These tr ips al low our students to dir ectly exper ience aspects of r el igious l i festyles and are impor tant in br inging their learning to l i fe.

Year 7 have been involved in a great project to r ecreate the book Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell into French.

Our topic has been around animals and descr iptions and this book lends i tself br i l l iantly to consolidate these.

We have had some exceptional creations including small books, animations and videos.

The students have researched a var iety of di f ferent animals and adjectives and also worked on the grammar point for adjectival agreements (masculine and feminine).

Well done to all!

The Year 10s are taking par t once again in the MFL week at King Edwards Pr imar y.

They w i l l be prepar ing and deliver ing a lesson to al l year groups in the Pr imar y school, including Reception, in French, German and Russian.

This is the thir d year we have been involved and i t has been a great success for al l the students, improving confidence and the love of language learning.

A group of Year 9 pupi ls have been involved in w r i ting a letter about themselves to German pupi ls at the Kant Gymnasium High School, in Ber l in.

This is an exci ting oppor tuni ty which w i l l al low them to develop their language ski l ls and raise their cultural awareness.

Marden pupi ls w rote the ini tial letter s in German and have received a r esponse in English from the German pupi ls.

Some of our pupi ls have decided to w r i te back in English and asked their 'penfr iend' to r espond in German, so that they are able to put their German reading ski l ls into practice.

Penpals for Year 9

Our Russian students have once again been out and about, putting their speaking ski l ls to good use.

Mrs Lymar took the group to a local r estaurant where the students chatted to the waiter s and ordered their food and dr ink in the target language.

This was a great oppor tuni ty for the group to broaden their vocabular y and develop l istening ski l ls too.

Musical NotesThe music depar tment has been a hive of activi ty over the past term. Many talented students

contr ibuted fantastic per formances to the Spr ing Concer t where we were tr eated to music from vocal duets to f lute duets to a ukulele ver sion of ?Seven Nation Army?.

Well done to all the students who performed!

Make sure you al l keep Thursday 11th July in your diar y for the next instalment of enter tainment.

Over the past term twenty-four year 9 students have been par ticipating in the TICE Program (This is Creative Enterpr ise). The aim of the workshops has been to give students an insight into the music industr y. Students through to the Explore stage of the program have so far enjoyed taking par t in a ?cover ver sion? project where they had to change the style of an existing song and per form i t on the stage at Gateshead College - a challenge given the r elatively shor t amount of time they had to complete the task. The next workshop students had talks and got advice from music industr y exper ts l ike Ged Robinson of Generator studios before being taken on a tour of the 02 Academy and Loft Studios. The next stage ?Create? w i l l see students r esponding to a choice of br iefs set by companies l ike Univer sal Publishing and Gothic Storm on to create an enti r ely acoustic per formance w ithout a mic or gui tar pedal in sight or w r i ting a piece of music to pi tch to Virgin Galactic to sel l the new exper ience of space tr avel. At Marden high School we suppor t students w ith a w ide r ange of medical conditions.

We?d l ike to r emind parents that students should not be car r ying any medication in school unless by pr ior agreement for those w ith asthma, diabetes and al lergies.

Where medication is absolutely necessar y for other conditions, e.g. antibiotics, pain r el ief, we have tr ained staff who w i l l make ar rangements for safe storage and administr ation of medication. Parents are r esponsible for br inging medicines into school and we requir e w r i tten consent (form avai lable from Reception); al l medicines should be in their or iginal packaging and clear ly labelled.
