Some big retailers blocking Apple Pay

Buying something with Apple Pay requires holding one of Apple’s mobile products, such as the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, in front of a credit card terminal and using your thumb to authenticate the purchase.

The retailers not allowing Apple Pay usage are in competition with it, according to The Verge.

Walmart, Kmart, Best Buy, Sears and several others have a joint venture called the Merchant Customer Exchange and are build-ing their own pay app. CurrentC will likely launch in 2015.

The Merchant Customer Exchange group announced this venture in 2012.

Marco Beach Resort earns Orbitz Best in Stay award

The Marco Beach Ocean Resort an-nounced today that it has earned a 2014 Best in Stay Award from Orbitz Worldwide for being a top-rated hotel in the market. The Best in Stay Awards recognize up to five highly-rated hotels in each of the online travel company’s 75 most popular destina-tions around the world.

The Best in Stay Award destination winners are selected based on the overall numeric score of hotel reviews submit-ted by Orbitz customers who have booked and stayed at hotels over the past year. Customers are asked to rate a variety of hotel attributes on a scale of one to five, including amenities, maintenance, hotel staff, room comfort, location and value. Those ratings are supplemented by input from nearly 150 Orbitz hotel experts who factor in other market conditions, such as the number of reviews, frequency of booking and reputation of hotel staff.

“We are delighted to receive this prestigious award which places the Marco Beach Ocean Resort among the top hotels around the world,” said Joseph Fisher, general manager of the Marco Beach Ocean Resort. “This honor is espe-cially gratifying because it is largely based upon our customers’ outstanding reviews of our property.”

Marco Island City Council met for another workshop Oct. 20 to grapple with the problem of fair and defensible water and

sewer rates.Councilors revisited a rate design

originally presented by Robert Ori in a workshop on Aug. 4. Ori is president of Public Resources Management Group, a utilities rate and financial management company. He also is council’s second rate design consultant, coming onboard after the Burton study failed to meet council approval.

The presentation contained three op-tions: Ori’s rate design and the designs of two city councilors: Chairman Ken Ho-necker and Councilor Amadeo Petricca.

By the end of the three hour workshop, council was still undecided about how to go forward but appeared to agree on one thing. Utilities users were so different, one-size-fits-all rates might be defensible but would probably not be 100 percent fair.

Some councilors proposed that all is-land residences were units of space occu-pied by approximately the same number of people. It was total water usage that varied widely between multifamily units and single-family homes. Council agreed the difference was in-house versus house-hold plus irrigation use.

The question of equating single-fam-ily residences with multifamily units concerned Marco Island attorney Craig Woodward, who attended the workshop.

“Marco Manor (condominium) units are nothing like Marco’s mega-mansions,”

he told council during public comment. He reasoned that houses with five or six bedrooms should not be based on the same equivalent residential connection (ERC) units as condominiums.

“Fairness doesn’t assume all are one,” he said.

Ori’s presentation compared water use for single-family dwellings at 1 ERC to multifamily units at .45 ERCs. Single fam-ily dwellings remained at 1 ERC for sewer while multifamily units were calculated at .75 ERCs.

His water flow charges were based on four tiers with the initial block, 0 to 6,000 gallons, reflecting indoor use only. His monthly residential sewer cap was 6,000 gallons. Overall, his plan would raise rates more than 5 percent for single-family homes.

To get to the issue of base equivalency, council discussed asking single-family residents to purchase secondary meters that would deduct water use inside the residence from irrigation use.

The city could bulk purchase meters, City Manager Roger Hernstadt told coun-cil, then sell them at cost to single-family homeowners. Residents would be asked to pay for the meters plus installation. He estimated the total cost at $250.

There would be an additional $3 per month charge for reading the deduct meters. Homeowners currently pay $7 to have their meters read.

Councilor Larry Sacher said he does not irrigate during the rainy season. He estimated his home flow usage at 4,000

Why I DIYI recently had my car serviced at a

A little at a time ... My bank allows me to pay online directly

to the principal. The minimum payment is $10. Any time I have $10, I pay it down. If I save $10 on something, I apply it to my mortgage. It can be surprising how often an extra $10 can be found for this worth-while purpose.

Expensive school pictures?I got a surprise when I volunteered to

help on picture day at our local grade school. My goal was to make sure that my two little ones looked their best. I ended up combing hair and wiping faces of our little subjects before they were photographed. The surprise was that I got a premium package for free. I only ended up buying one package for two kids.

Craft supplies on the cheapA great place to find craft supplies on

the cheap is at church bazaars and sales. Our local community church has a Christ-mas bazaar every year. Last year, I found a

lot of counted cross stitching supplies for pennies on the dollar. I bought a whole bag of embroidery hoops for $1. There were yarns, ribbons, sewing supplies, etc. Yard sales are another place to find craft sup-plies. People are either moving or clean-ing out “granny’s house,” and you can find a whole host of various craft items very cheaply. Have fun!

Homemade copper cleanerMy friend gave me a recipe for a copper

cleaner. I wasn’t sure it would work, but decided to give it a try. It turned out that it’s better than anything I’ve ever bought.

I mixed equal parts vinegar and flour. Using a soft cloth, I dipped it into the mixture and rubbed the copper. Then I rinsed with warm water. I didn’t have any problems, but you might want to try it on something inexpensive before you try it on any antique items.

Balance transfer cardsI made a list of my credit cards that

includes interest rates, dates when any promotional rates expire, credit limits, payment addresses, and phone numbers. This helps me two ways. If I ever lose my purse, I have a handy list of the cards and numbers to notify them.

The main help is that I can start looking for balance transfer deals and be ready when the promotional rates expire.

Can’t stand food wasteI’ve been trying to reduce my grocery

bill (who hasn’t lately?) and couldn’t stand all the food that I was throwing out. I was throwing out everything from spoiled leftovers to overripe fruit. I decided to get serious about a realistic weekly menu.

I used to hate the idea of spending the time to plan a menu, but I’ve come to enjoy it. Not only am I using up the food that we buy, but I’ve found that I can plan a little wiggle room for the night that I have to work late or change plans. I even have some meals in the freezer that can

be microwaved in just a few minutes. The price on meat hasn’t come down, but my bills sure have.

Duct tape Halloween costumesSeveral years ago, I made two costumes

out of duct tape and paper bags from the grocery store. One was a knight costume. I cut the paper bag to fit my four-year-old son like a shirt with pointed capped sleeves and then used the silver duct tape to cover it in a design that looked like “armor.” Then we decorated the front with a colored picture that looked like a crest. I made a helmet out of a brown paper lunch bag and a matching shield with cardboard covered in duct tape.

The second was a robot costume made out of a paper bag covered in duct tape and decorated with electronic-looking pictures printed from the Internet. We also made arm covers out of wrapping paper tubes covered in duct tape. We cov-ered the decorations on both costumes with clear packing tape. Both costumes

together only cost $3.29, which was the cost of the duct tape.

Have fun creating your costumes!

Frugal foreign cuisineMost countries have some recipes that

feature low-cost items. I love to try them on my family.

One of my favorites is a variation on a Chinese theme. I take chicken that is left over from a roaster and remove it from the bone. Then I stir fry it with rice, egg, and any left-over veggies I have sitting round. After I add a little soy sauce, I have a great, frugal meal.

I’ve just started searching the web for other countries that have frugal recipes. Can’t wait to see what I can find!

Identifying shorebirds can be tricky. While certain magnificent specimens such as the great blue heron or the white ibis are more or less unmistakable, once you get into the smaller, more similar species, the

distinctions become minute and even the experts are flipping through their birding books.

“We call those ‘LBJs,’ – little brown jobbers,” said Fran Huxley, peering at one small, nondescript bird rooting through the mud and seagrass at the edge of the Tigertail Lagoon. “To identify them, I usually start with the size.”

She did identify the bird as a black-bellied plover, al-though when it arrives in Southwest Florida, it does not, in fact, have a black belly. Huxley pointed out another bird, and said, “If it does not have a black dot on its tail, it’s a dowitcher.”

Huxley and Susan Kubat led a group of about 30 for “Breakfast and Birding,” a birding walk and talk spon-sored Saturday morning by the Friends of Tigertail Beach on Saturday morning.

The differences between the black-bellied plover and the semipalmated plover, the least sandpiper and the western sandpiper, the dowitcher and the willet, are minute and arcane, and the birds don’t make it easier. They can entirely change their color from juvenile to mature phases, and from season to season. Even the white ibis, when young, is a mottled gray. The short-billed dowitcher has an impressively long beak.

“The willet has an amazing wing pattern when it flies,” said Kubat, “ but you’re not going to flush a bird just to see the wings.”

While some of the “LBJs” may not look impressive, they typically have come thousands of miles to the beach on Marco Island. Many of them, the “northern nesters” that Saturday’s event focused on, have traveled from

nesting sites in northwestern Alaska and the northern reaches of Canada, and some are only making a stop here before continuing south as far as Patagonia in Argentina.

Tigertail Beach is an amazing place to view birds. With condos looming in the background, the lagoon behind the Gulf beach hosts abundant birdlike, and they continue to go about their business, getting their own breakfasts, even with dozens of humans trooping by, pointing binoculars and long camera lenses at them.

“You can get fairly close to the birds here,” said Hux-

ley. “They’re used to us — they tolerate us. I never say they’re tame.”

Saturday morning was glorious for birds and people alike, with a cloudless blue sky and cool breezes.

“This air is just delicious,” said Cindy Daly. In addition to birds already mentioned, additional herons, egrets, sandpipers walked through the shallows, while turkey vultures soared over-head, and an osprey flew by with a fish gripped in his talons.

And speaking of gulls, “there are no ‘seagulls.’ We have three types of gulls here, laughing gulls, ring-billed gulls and herring gulls,” said Huxley. The group of birders were dressed and equipped for the occasion, with water socks, Keens and Tevas on their feet, waterproof clothing and a variety of high-end or garden variety binoculars strapped around their necks. They were prepared to wade, but the tour never went more than 100 yards from the pavilion at the beach access point or had to get their feet wet, so abundant were the birds. Jim Robellard brought the action close with a 400 mm zoom lens, plus a 1.4 tele-converter and a monopod, mounted on his Canon SLR.

Before the walk, Friends of Tigertail President Linda Colombo spoke briefly to the group, and member-ship chairman Joe Parisi made a pitch to join, offering a free logo cap to anyone who signed up that day, at just $20 for the year or $50 for three years.

gallons per month. With the landscape irrigation on, he estimated he used 22,000 gallons. If the base charge were reduced to 4,000 gallons, Sacher felt his bill would go down $20 per month.

“That would position me, in a relatively short period of time, to recover the cost of the secondary meter,” he said.

Woodward told council he was a propo-nent of the deduct meters but took issue with the base charge.

“People who are not here get a phony (water) bill,” he said.

Petricca’s alternative would allow single-family dwellings to receive a rate decrease while master-metered, multi-family units would receive the largest increase. Honecker said the consultant had misunderstood his alternative, so it was not presented.

Ori recommended his second scenario, but warned council not to deviate from the current structure too much.

“I think the city and citizens would be tremendously well-served by leaving the rate structure as it is today and add-ing secondary meters so single-family homes could get actual numbers on both sewer and water. Then, a half-year or year after installation, then visit the rate de-sign. This would help remove the vitriol of pitting homeowners and multifamily owners,” he said.

By the end of the three hour workshop, council was still undecided about how to go forward but appeared to agree on one thing. Utilities users were so different, one-size-fits-all rates might be defensible but would probably not be 100 percent fair.

Cheryl Ferrara/eagle Correspondent

rate consultant robert ori describes water rate designs as proposed by his firm public resources Management group, and by two Marco Island City Councilors: Chairman Ken honecker and Councilor amadeo petricca.

Cheryl Ferrara/eagle Correspondent

Marco Island City Councilor larry honig expresses difficulty with any rate analysis that would increase costs for single-family homes.

“Fairness doesn’t assume all are one.”

— Craig Woodward, Marco Island attorney

Al Diaz, manager of the Royal Marco Point One condominium, told council that condominiums were currently in their budget period, and if a decision could not be made very soon, council should consider waiting until 2015.

[Editor’s Note: One week from today, Tuesday, Nov. 4, the country heads to the polls with control of the Senate at stake. In Florida, we’ll be selecting a governor. And on Marco Island, we’ll decide between four candidates seeking three open positions on City Council. In fairness to those candidates, today is the final issue that the Eagle will present letters of endorsement and recommendation for this election.]

Vote BergerOn Nov. 4 we will have the opportunity, as registered

voters on Marco Island, to vote for a highly qualified local leader to be a new member of our City Council.

Litha Berger has been a community-service volun-teer here on Marco for years, chairing the Marco Island Newcomers’ Club, serving on the board of the Marco Island Taxpayers Association, and is currently on the City Parks and Recreation Committee. The business leadership experience Litha Berger will bring to City Council will be invaluable. Her common-sense approach and concern for Marco Island and its residents will be foremost. Please join us and vote for Litha Berger on Election Day. You’ll be glad you did.

NANcy ANd dusTy RhOdes | Marco Island

Put a woman on councilIt has been too many years since we have had a woman

on City Council. It is now time to rectify that with Litha Berger as our candidate. Litha has been very active in the community and sincerely cares about Marco Island. I hope you will give Litha consideration when you vote for City Council candidates. Thank you.

JOyce ANd RIch KAelIN | Marco Island

Good candidates this yearI have known Litha Berger since 2002 when I worked

with her on a continuing care facility that was proposed by one of my clients for Marco Island.

Litha was the professional consultant on the project having spent her career working with assisted and in-dependent living facilities. Unfortunately for the Island, that facility was never completed as many of our resi-dents have expressed a desire to be able to continue to live on the island even when they need assistance and cannot live alone.

In the last 12 years that I have known and dealt with Litha I have found her to be very compassionate and concerned with Marco’s future as well as involved in

our community. In addition she is reliable, honest and will seek out and be open to different opinions before making decisions. We are fortunate this year to have a good selection of candidates running for the three open seats, but one criteria should be diversity and having a woman back on the Marco Island City Council would be a good way to give more of our Islanders representation.

Litha clearly will be an asset to the City Council and should be one of your choices when you vote.

cRAIg R. WOOdWARd, esq. | Marco Island

Vote for RiosVictor Rios is the promise of a bright future for Marco

Island. As a longtime resident of Marco Island myself, never have I been so inspired to passionately stand be-hind a candidate for the Marco Island City Council as I have since meeting current candidate Victor Rios.

Victor Rios has been omnipresent at Council meet-ings (his attendance as a Marco citizen is at 90 percent) long before throwing his own hat into the ring and seeks election so that he may more actively stand up for the betterment of everyone in the community.

He is fully engaged with all of the key issues and con-cerns of the area residents and he has consistently and

enthusiastically pushed the Council for reflective debate and strategic results. It’s this energy and mindful at-tentiveness of Mr. Rios that has driven me to vigorously support his campaign.

Mr. Rios is a wonderfully intelligent man who embod-ies the American Dream.

Originating from Cuba, he came to the United States in the early 1960s and was soon a member of the U.S. Army, later completing his masters of business administration from Rutgers as well as additional training from academ-ic programs at Duke University and Wharton School of Business. Mr. Rios also considerable years of incredibly strong professional finance and business management experience and was honored by the Los Angeles Mayor, when Mr. Rios lived there, for his extensive work in the community including that with schoolchildren.

Victor Rios is absolutely committed to the betterment of our community, for all of us now and those that will follow. I encourage everyone to meet Mr. Rios over the coming campaign days and to trust his proven com-munity leadership with your support. We would be so fortunate to have him as one of our elected officials.

Even playing fieldLike most cities, Marco Island has ordinances gov-

erning where, when and how you can display political signs. Some of those rules prohibit mounting political signs on vehicles, whether parked or being driven. And some of the rules prohibit political signs from being placed in the public right of way, as well as prohibiting vehicles from being parked within so many feet of any intersection, and within vacant lots without the owner’s permission. These requirements are for political fair-ness and equality, and for public safety and protection of property.

You would think that our stalwart “captains of in-dustry” and leaders of some of our citizen’s advocate groups and newsletters would abide by, and obey, the letters of the law. Or, perhaps they feel that they are above the law.

I’ve filed complaints with the MIPD about these violations, and they’re “investigating.” Hopefully the investigation will conclude in time to stop these viola-tions before election day.

Make it an even playing field for all the candidates.

Bill Harris | Marco island

Re: Unforgivable responseIt is more than tragic that we can’t have a civil con-

versation about the fundamentals of our Constitution and the oath of office that some of us swear an oath to protect and preserve this great Republic.

As a veteran, who takes his Oath very seriously, I guess I should be a little offended to be accused of using rules for radicals tactics and being an elitist for intro-ducing a Constitutional survey designed with the help of well-known Constitutional-scholar KrisAnne Hall to simply help voters understand the Constitutional prin-ciples and values of candidates running for public office.

But after meeting with over 150 candidates/elect-ed officials and literally thousands of citizens across Florida in the past few months, not much surprises me anymore. It is no accident that our Republic is on the ropes when the principles underlying our Constitution and their oath of office are off limits.

This isn’t about Russ or me dusting it up over the founding principles of our Republic.

Only you can make the oath of office and Constitu-tion relevant and hold elected officials accountable for their underlying principles and values.

KeitH FlaugH | Marco island

Are we gullible?Enough is enough. The mudslinging of our candidates Gov. Rick Scott

and ex-Gov. Charlie Crist has been a real turnoff for me. At this point, assuming it will continue until election

day, I will not be voting for either candidate.A recent Letter to the Editor stated that if anyone

other than the two candidates did the kinds of things that are stated in their television ads, those people would probably be in jail or prison right now.

I try to listen to or read about what they will do for all Floridians if elected but the strong emphasis on “mud-slinging” clouds anything positive they have to say.

And when an electric fan gets more local, state and national news coverage than the actual debate, causing some people to say “only in Florida,” it sure does not paint a pretty picture.

Not much time left for candidates to clean up their act and begin to tell what we really want to hear — what will you do for Florida?

Bill Kearney | naples

Money, not healthGov. Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 1030 into law, al-

lowing cannabis with low levels of tetrahydrocannabi-nol to be grown and distributed in oil form to Florida patients in June 2014.

Florida already has medical marijuana in liquid form. This amendment you will be voting on is nothing

more than recreational marijuana. Now we’re reading, “There will be millions made” —

no mention of medical or health, just money.Do you really want that for Florida? This vote will either keep Florida a thriving, pros-

perous state or lump us with the states sinking into moral decay.

Your choice.

LEttERs from 9A oBituary

Merissa lynette DruMMonDMarco Island, FL

Merissa Lynette Drummond passed away on October 20th, 2014 at the age of 26.

Merissa was born June 15th, 1988 in Joliet, IL to Marvin and Barbara Drummond. She graduated from Lely High School in 2006.

Merissa is survived by her parents and her two loving sisters Natasha Drummond, 32 years old; and Christina (Ninaa) Drummond, 22 years old. Merissa’s grandmoth-ers Helen Drummond and Mary Lou Cohen loved her with all her heart. Her loving nephew Jacob Schooley, age 7, will miss her dearly and her niece Lilliana, age 5 months old.

Merissa was a beautiful soul inside and out. There wasn’t a day that would go by where she wasn’t full of smiles, love and joy. There was no such thing as staying blue when around her; she has a passion for animals, preferably cats and children. She loved her family more than words could express.

God was ready to take her, this beautiful angel, off earth and set her free to heaven. He has even bigger plans for her there.

Merissa will be missed dearly by her Family and friends and living on this world without her seems un-imaginable, but her only wish would be to watch us strive for success, carry the wonderful memories that we’ve made with her and to continue to smile while continuing our journey on earth.

We love you Merissa, God now has the most beautiful angel and we will all meet again when the time is ready.

Visitation is in the San Marco Church Hall, on Wednesday (TOMORROW) October 29th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mass will follow from 6 p.m. to 7:00. p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the David Lawrence Center, Naples, FL.

Sure, they went undefeated, but the people at the top of the pyramid at Marco Island Charter Mid-dle School didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Unlike in the NFL or big time college football programs, the school sees its sports programs as

a way for students to learn lessons that will serve them as they grow and continue their education.

“We don’t put a lot of emphasis on wins and losses,” said MICMS athletic director Roger Raymond. “It’s more about making your best e ort, whether you’re ahead on the scoreboard or not.” The important thing, he said, is to “be good teammates, learn to work together. These kids are getting ready for their next endeavor in life, which is high school. Hopefully, they’ll learn something in middle school that helps.”

Be that as it may, let the record show that the Charter Middle Eagles football team just notched its fi rst-ever undefeated season, going 6-0, including repeat wins over Evangelical Christian of Fort Myers and First Bap-tist Academy, and shutting out Community School of Naples 24-0.

For head coach Tim Tudor, a social studies teacher at MICMS, some of what the kids takeaway is a knowledge of football fundamentals.

“I get my kicks when I hear from high school coach-es, “your guy knows how to tackle and block.’ We try to teach the right technique and a winning attitude. I told them last year and I told them this year, ‘It’s middle school football. We’re not winning the Super Bowl here.’”

As the string of “W’s” grew, he did stress keeping the streak going as a motivator for the team.

“Once we went 3-0, 4-0, I used that as an incentive,” said Tudor. “We’re going to put a banner up in the gym with all their names on it. It’s nice to come back when you’re in high school or later, and show your friends.”

Tudor knows that feeling fi rsthand; as one of the fi rst class to go all the way through MICMS as a middle school student, he and basketball coach Rad Lovacky have their names up on just such a banner from their time playing hoops for the school.

“Yeah, my name’s up there for basketball,” he said. With 25 on the roster, Tudor made a point of getting ev-eryone into the game, and reminding the eighth graders it was up to them to help their younger teammates and build a strong foundation for next year.

“Lots of times, I’d pull out eighth graders and put a seventh grader in. The kids stepped up and took the seventh graders under their wings.”

Tudor stressed the help he got from his assistant coaches, Scott Hurley, Rick Endres, and Hayden War-

ren. Two of them have family members playing for the Eagles; Warren’s grandson Jake Warren was one of the stalwarts who “went both ways” for the Eagles, starting at o ensive guard and defensive nose tackle. Stay Endres, though a seventh grader and therefore one of the younger team members, did the same, playing o ensive tackle and defensive end.

Probably the most notable standout player on the team was quarterback Richard Reisinger, an eighth grader, who also stayed on the fi eld as a defender, starting as a linebacker. Oli “Olliewood” Wasem, who played line-backer and running back, and sometimes lined up as a wide receiver, also made a major contribution to the team’s success, as did Zach Hurdis, who played wide receiver and safety. Hurdis is the third of four boys in his family, with one older brother in Division 1 college football and another on the team at Lely High School.

One other player is notable for not being a boy. Eighth grader Jessica Pierce played kicker and defensive “line-man,” and notched some solo tackles. At fi rst, it was di cult to fi t in, she said.

“I think all of them gave me a hard time at the begin-ning, except the ones I’d played with in the Optimist league,” said Jessica, “but everyone got over it.” She fi rst went out for football, she said, because “my brother thought he was better than me. I wanted to prove him wrong.” Her brother, she noted, is not playing any sports currently, and she just made the soccer team, which will start its season shortly.

The Eagles’ closest brush with defeat came on the fi nal outing of the season, an away game at FirstBaptist Academy.

“We went into halftime up 6-0, but they scored in the second half and tied it. We scored the last touchdown with 35 seconds left, did a squib kicko , and recovered our own kick,” remembered Tudor. Whatever the future brings, the 2014 MICMS football Eagles have their un-defeated season to remember.

CINDY PIERCE/SPECIAL TO THE EAGLE (3)

The Marco Island Charter Middle Eagles football team just notched its fi rst-ever undefeated season, going 6-0, including repeat wins over Evangelical Christian of Fort Myers and First Baptist Academy, and shutting out Community School of Naples 24-0.

Not in order, Eagle team members include 8th graders Richard Reisinger (12), Jayden Noel (13), Cooper Nettles (23), Zach Hurdis (80), Jake Warren (54), Daegan Rash (5), Zach Burgess (8), Christian Pipitone (64), Nick Obstaint (24), Whitley Theork (20), Jay Cartwright (65), Jackson O’Shea (59), Castor Vosburgh (22), Oli Wasem (1), Ariel Labra (26), and Jess Pierce (52); and 7th graders Dom Moller (63), Ryan Wallace (21), Sam Meredith (27), Stuy Endres (55), Zach Smith (7), Mikey LaCava (29), Charles Hamilton (36), John Baijnath (50), and Josh Jordan (25).

With how last week’s football game end-ed against Evangelical Christian School and seeing one of its own being taken off on a stretcher, Marco Island Academy was counting down the seconds until it could return to their sanctuary on the field.

“They were ready to get back on the field,” first-year head coach Greg Fowler said. “It was a tough loss and to lose Bon (Deese, to a concussion) at the end of the game, they just needed to get back on the field and enjoy the game. Tonight was a good night for them.”

The Rays (3-5) did just that and ended their five-game losing skid with a 52-13 thumping at Canterbury High School on Friday night.

“We have been playing good offense and at times playing good defense, but the second half hasn’t been kind to us the past couple of weeks,” Fowler said. “It was good to see us finish a game. We are a young group of guys.”

The Rays outscored the Cougars 20-6 in the second half but it was their dam-age in the second quarter that split the game open. Entering the frame, Marco Island held a 13-7 lead before winning the quarter 19-0.

The Rays had a plethora of playmak-ers, but none better than sophomore Tyler Gresham. Gresham pulled off the hat trick of touchdowns when he found the end zone on the ground, through the air and on de-fense with his 85-yard interception return.

“Tyler is a great young man that works very hard,” Fowler said. “He is a big kid and everybody expects a lot from him. He is only a sophomore. He has done some great growing. He has learned how to run the ball for us and has played some great defense. We like to move him around a lot. He needed a good game.”

Gresham finished with 152 all-purpose yards on offense and led the Rays in rush-ing with 100 yards.

Also having himself a game was the coach’s son, quarterback Andrew Fowler, who completed 17-of-19 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.

The difference in the game was the Rays ability to win the turnover battle. They were so good, it even surprised their own skipper when he found out how many picks they had.

“We just took care of the ball and lim-ited the turnovers,” Fowler said. “We had a tendency to turn the ball over. That was a big part of what is going on for us.

“I didn’t know we had four intercep-tions. That is awesome. The guys played well tonight and worked hard all year. I thought we were doing some great things and hopefully this brings us back on track for the end of the season.”

The Cougars (1-5) were led by quar-terback Kyle Babb and receivers Gus Cunningham and Stephen Hueniken. Babb completed 11-of-25 passes for 204 yards. Cunningham had both touch-downs and Hueniken recorded nine receptions for 111 yards.

“This is one of the worst years I have ever experienced as a head coach for in-juries,” Canterbury coach Mark Miller said. “We have probably five major inju-ries and nine starters injured. Because of that we have been behind the 8-ball all season long. Looking back on this season, we got a lot of young kids a lot of time that will hopefully help us for the future.”

MIA handles Canterbury to end losing streak

PreP football PreP football

By Scott ClairEagle Correspondent

Marvin Liberiste knew he needed to make a big play in the Lely High School football team’s game against Sebring on Friday night.

The senior actually ended up making two in the final minutes to please the homecoming crowd as Lely defeated Se-bring 27-14 in a win that might not have been pretty, but was a win nonetheless.

The Trojans (5-3) dominated the game on both sides of the ball, but because of numerous mistakes and penalties, they found themselves leading just 20-14 with under three minutes left and the Blue Streaks driving deep in Lely territory.

On fourth down for Sebring, Liberi-ste intercepted Blue Streaks quarterback Brian Lane’s pass just shy of the end zone and returned it to midfield. A minute later, Liberiste scored on a 14-yard run to ice the victory.

“It meant a lot to the team,” Liberiste said. “We were struggling all game. The mistakes were killing us. (Sebring) had one chance. I knew they were going deep, so I just played back and was able to pick off the pass. As for the touchdown, that was all on the line. They did a great job of blocking.”

The victory gives Lely a three-game winning streak heading into next Fri-day’s home game against Immokalee for the Class 5A-District 15 title and the right host the first round of the playoffs.

But Lely coach Culmer St. Jean knows his team has to play better than it did against Sebring to beat Immokalee. The Trojans had two turnovers and nine penal-ties. And most of the penalties came at ex-actly the wrong time, including a holding call that wiped out a Tupac Isme 73-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

“We started of quick, with a touch-down and safety,” St. Jean said. “I thought we were on the right path and then had a few hiccups on offense and a muffed punt. Things like that we can’t have. We can’t make those many mistakes on both sides of the ball. We have to play a clean game against Immokalee on both sides of the ball and sustain drives.”

Lely did start out quick. On the Tro-jans’ first possession they ran four plays before Isme (137 yards) scored on a 22-yard run.

About 90 seconds later, Lely was on the board again when linebacker Kendall Duckworth sacked Lane in the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 Trojans lead.

However, Sebring (3-4) capitalized on a fumbled punt return by Lely, and some lax secondary coverage to score two touchdowns and take a 14-9 lead three minutes before the half.

Lely responded with a Lik Estilien 15-yard scoring pass to Bob Tanis seconds before intermission to retake the lead for good.

“We made a lot of mistakes,” Isme said. “But there is never a perfect game. What we have to do next week is eliminate those mistakes and we’ll be good. We made a great effort all around tonight. We know we have to be better against Immokalee.”

It was a rough night for the Blue Streaks. Besides the loss and the long bus ride home, the game was stopped twice for around 20 minutes each time as two Sebring players were injured and were taken to the Physicians Re-gional-Collier Boulevard Hospital by ambulance.

There was no report on the condition of either player after the game.

“You have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.” —Anonymous

These days, bridge has become far more level at the top than it was 20 years ago. This is especially so in the women’s game, as seen by the fact that while the top countries (USA, Italy, China, France, England and the Netherlands) almost al-ways qualify for the later stages of the world championships, there are many other countries who can upset the seed-ing books, and frequently do.

Spain is just one of those countries, and Nuria Almirall demonstrated her talents here. She found herself in a pretty awful spot on this deal from the Euro-pean Championships, but did not give up hope.

Almirall had reached six clubs as South after an auction in which both players might have done just a little too much — though it is hard to criticize ei-ther player, North should probably not go past three no-trump with such poor controls.

Clearly one might succeed by find-ing a singleton heart king, but Nuria did better than that. She won the diamond lead in dummy, cashed dummy’s other diamond, then played the spade ace and king and ruffed a spade. Now she cashed one more diamond, ruffed the fourth dia-mond with a master trump in dummy and exited with the club queen.

West won her bare ace and was forced to open up hearts or concede a ruff-and-discard. She played a heart, and Nuria was not going to spoil a good piece of reporting by misguessing whether to put in the 10 or the queen, was she?

ANSWER: Your partner’s call of four clubs is a slam-try, and with your re-markably good trumps you have enough to cooperate with a call of four spades, a cue-bid implicitly agreeing clubs — the last-bid suit. If you had diamond pref-erence, you would probably bid four diamonds over four clubs. Just for the record, a bid of four no-trump by you here would be to play.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT MEDICAL NAME OF THE SHOULDER BLADE? Take the ‘Trivia Test.’

SCORPIOOct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, you are better at dealing with things when they’re out in the light of day. You don’t like to be secretive, nor do you like the idea of others keeping secrets.

SAGITTARIUSNov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, do not look at a current problem as something that will always block your success and happiness. In-stead, use this obstacle as a way to get your bearings.

CAPRICORNDec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, though you may feel like lashing out at others, this week you show an impressive amount of self-restraint. Get through the week, and things will turn around.

AQUARIUSJan 21/Feb 18The messages you are receiving from everyone around you seem mottled and mixed, Aquarius. Instead of socializing with others, maybe you just need some alone time.

PISCESFeb 19/Mar 20Pisces, speak up if you do not feel you are receiving enough emotional support from your closest allies. Maybe they do not know how you’re feeling.

ARIESMar 21/Apr 20Conflicting messages confuse you this week, Aries. Just don’t let this confusion keep you from doing what you think is right. Choose a course and stick with it.

TAURUSApr 21/May 21Don’t be too hard on yourself this week, Taurus. You really do not need to push yourself unless you are feeling motivated to do so. If you feel like relaxing, so be it.

GEMINIMay 22/Jun 21Gemini, stick to the outskirts of the room and be a quiet observer of what’s going on around you instead of being the center of attention. You may enjoy being a fly on the wall for a change.

CANCERJun 22/Jul 22Cancer, this week you may feel an unusual need to be noticed and appreci-ated by others. Embrace the spotlight and make the most of this opportunity to share your thoughts.

LEOJul 23/Aug 23Leo, you may find it hard to establish your priorities this week, but you have a good head on your shoulders and will figure out the path to take. Give yourself a chance to have fun.

VIRGOAug 24/Sept 22Virgo, do the right thing even if it costs you something emotionally. Your actions may be carefully monitored, and someone is learning by your example.

LIBRASept 23/Oct 23Libra, try your hardest to make a tricky set of circumstances work to your advantage. Working with a partner is a great way to get things done.

FISHING REPORT

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WEATHER

By Capt. Bill [email protected]

BACKWATER: Wind eases into weekend. All easterly keeps most water clean. Some riling shallow bay waters. New moon strong a.m. incoming tide; weaker p.m. outgoing. Water temps seasonal 76-79 degree range. Redfish continue prime target. Less action now on redfish schools in bay shallows. More to far reach creek edges late incoming tide with freelined shrimp under mangrove overhang. Outgoing switch to exit tidal points with weighted bait in bottom cuts. Black drum in 5-6# class action along waterway edge cover Rookery Bay and ICW to Marker 58 on shrimp to bottom slowly. Pompano if clean water south edges Capri Channel on small tipped jigs. Snapper slowing; try Keeywadin docks either tide on shrimp.

NEARSHORE: Mackerel/bluefish thick in bait schools 20-25’ first reefs. On structure with chum into current working top water jigs on light wire. Little tunny show — switch to freelined threadfin. Keep live bait ready to sightcast to southbound cobia.

OFFSHORE: Red grouper closed in federal waters; work 9-mile line hard bottom for both reds/gags with live pinfish. Yellowtail active on wrecks 10-15 miles with freelined bait into chum. Permit showing wrecks circa 12 miles on small crabs under chum.
