Spring is just around the corner and the weather couldn't bemore beautiful! March kicks off Sea Turtle Nesting seasonwhich runs through October! In North America, sea turtlesprimarily nest from North Carolina through Florida, with over90% occurring in Florida. Within that range is the Archie CarrNational Wildlife Refuge, a 20.5-mile stretch of beachbetween Melbourne and Wabasso, along Florida's eastcentral coast. The Archie Carr Refuge represents the Nation'smost significant land acquisition effort to protect the world'spopulations of marine turtles. The Refuge attracts morenesting for threatened loggerhead turtles than virtuallyanyplace else on Earth. These Brevard and Indian River

County beaches also attract more nesting green turtles, anendangered species, than anyplace in the continental U.S.Even the endangered mammoth leatherback turtleoccasionally climbs up on these beaches to deposit its eggsin the sand. Protection of these beaches is essential to thesurvival of loggerheads and green turtles in North America soplease use caution when coming across marked nests.
March also marks the 114th Birthday of Pelican Island, ourNation's first National Wildlife Refuge. Come out and help uscelebrate and learn about Pelican Island and other refuges! The pelicans aren't the only ones flocking to the SebastianRiver Area, we also have plenty of other great events for youto enjoy including the 51stth Annual Grant Seafood Festival, the 21st Annual EcoFest, Rodeos, Concerts, Arts & CraftShows, Wildlife Tours, a County Fair, and so much more.
