Tony Formica Rolls First Career 300 at Holiday Bowl
By Joan TaylorAfter only 20 years of bowling, Tony Formica,
52, saw his first 300, this at Holiday Bowl in
Oakland. “I had a 299 last year and came close
many times, so this was a thrill,” he said. “I got
the monkey off my back. It was difficult to
explain to people when they would ask if I ever
bowled a perfect game. I know I’m a good
bowler (218 average in his Friday Night Mixed
League), and my friends will tell you that I can
hit the pocket 99 tines out of 100 for the last few
years. It’s like someone asking if you ever had a
hole in one; I’ve had a double eagle, but never a
hole in one.”
Formica used a Storm Anarchy ball drilled by
Randy Battistus at Holiday Bowl. He wasn’t even
nervous on his final shot. In fact he would like to
roll a second 300 in the next few weeks, now that
he knows he can.
Tony resides in Denville with his wife and
bowling partner, Donna, and children Alison, 29
and Tony, Jr., 26. Athleticism is in the genes, as
Tony’s father, Mike, was a left-handed pitcher
for the Brooklyn Dodgers, recruited by Branch
Rickey. Tony only bowls in winter leagues, two
at Holiday, because he also enjoys golf, softball,
ping pong, billiards, and “you name it.” He dedi-
cated his perfecto to wife, Donna, for being
there.

Remember last week’s tournament-within-a-tournament for the county
women’s 600 club? Well, the Bowling Writers Association of America
(BWAA) has the same concept as a fundraiser for the Chuck Pezzano
Scholarship Fund. Between April 11 and 17, entrants will use their league
scores that week to compete in one of two Singles Divisions: up to 199
Handicap and 200 plus Handicap.
There is also a Doubles Tournament where they can double with any-
one, anywhere who is sanctioned in the US. Handicap will be computed
at 90% from the highest entered average in each division. Entry forms and
fees have to be submitted before midnight Pacific time on April 11 to qual-
ify for the competition. Register for an account at http://www.virtualtour-
naments.com/Register.aspx or, if you already have an account, login to
enter. The site also gives tournament information and rules. Be sure to
select the April 11th Tournament for the BWAA fundraising Tournament.
