The Tallwood Tradition
Gentlemen.
I hope you were able to make our kickoff dinner. It
was a great start to our 2019 season.
The cocktail hour was highlighted with a putting
contest put on by Zach and Eric. And be sure to
congratulate Greg Berger for winning the “ball
guessing “ contest.
Our featured speaker, Jim Remy (former PGA
president), talked about the state of golf, a change in
culture and challenges for the future. He finished up
with a few tour stories and fielded questions from the
membership.
The season’s start will be here any day, so start
loosening up. Hope to see you all on the putting green
in a few weeks.

For those of you that were unable to make it to the Spring general membership meeting, I would like to
provide an update on my three main areas of focus for 2019.
Rules – As you all know, the USGA and R&A have published significant changes to the rules of golf in
eight general categories which became effective for the 2019 season. Our Club Professional, Zac
Stennett has volunteered to lead the rollout, particularly as to how the new rules affect certain situations
at Tallwood. We plan to post a summary of the rules changes in the Clubhouse for reference and are
looking into the possibility of obtaining pocket guides for our members. However, if a situation arises
where any player is not sure of a rules interpretation, it is always best to ask Zac or Eric for clarification
at the conclusion of play.
Review the TMC Constitution – We have begun to receive comments on the Constitution. A small
committee will review the Constitution, recommended changes and prepare a presentation for
consideration by the Membership at the Fall general membership meeting.
Pace of play policy – The Board and the Pro Shop have discussed improved ways to monitor and
encourage a fair pace of play policy for the upcoming season. We all agree that the general pace of play
improved greatly with the adoption of the ten-minute tee time policy several years ago. There are still
occasions where slow play can occur and the Pro Shop plans to place a monitor on the course to identify
and encourage groups that are falling behind. This will be monitored and discussed by the Board and
the Pro Shop on a monthly basis as an improvement initiative for the enjoyment of the Club.
I would welcome any and all comments and suggestions.

Richard Richards: Better come in till this blows over.
Bishop: What do you think, fella?
Carl Spackler: I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff's gonna come down for quite a while.
Bishop: You're right. Anyway, the Good Lord would never disrupt the best game of my life.

Present Men’s Club membership is at 177 with member’s ages ranging from 20 to 96.
Response has been slow in March as some might not be thinking golf while the ground has been covered
in snow while others bask in the warmth (relative warmth) of southern climates (bastards).

The snow is gone, hopefully for the remainder of this winter season so it is time to get your
memberships up to date to prepare for the 2019 season.
I would like to have everyone join me in welcoming the new members who have joined the Men’s club
thus far in 2019: Dave Brown, Harrison Chipkin, Jake Chipkin, Chuck Formica, Dave Hobby, Tim
Poloski, Ronan Shortt, George “Buddy” Warner, and Robert Woble. Welcome to Tallwood Men’s
Club. I hope to see you on the course sooner rather than later.
Since we all know how soft and swampy golf courses can be in March and April, I thought it pertinent
to post the new rules on embedded balls.
Embedded Ball
The relief procedure has changed for an embedded ball.
The relief area starts at the spot immediately behind where the ball was embedded, and a ball must be
dropped in the one club-length relief area, no nearer the hole than this spot, and in the General Area.
There is NO longer a requirement to announce to your marker or fellow competitor your intention to
mark and lift the ball to check if it is embedded, but it is still good practice to do so.
A ball is NOT embedded if it is below the level of the ground as a result of anything other than the
player’s previous stroke, such as when the ball was dropped in taking relief under a Rule.
As with other relief procedures, another ball may be substituted and dropped when taking relief. The
original ball may be used, but it is not required.

The Kick-Off Dinner was a great start to the new season, even if it ushered in the first hard snow of the
year. I'd like to thank our speaker Jim Remy for providing a very entertaining presentation, the Pro
Shop, my social committee members, and co-captain Kim Aderman for making the event a success, and
would like to mention that The Gallery did a fantastic job with the buffet. Frank McDermottt showed
off his flat stick skill, winning the putting contest and Greg Berger demonstrated his estimation powers
by guessing the golf ball count.
Next up is the Spring Classic on 4/6, a five-man scramble and a fun way to ease into the schedule. Greet
the old friends, meet some new ones, and enjoy a beverage or two. Look for the flyer here in the
newsletter or get one on the TMC website.
See you at the 19th hole…

Tournament
Getting pretty close! Here are a few reminders about some of the events that have to be signed up for
and the process.
Pro’s Trophy: Aside from last year’s winner, Greg Garcia, the remaining 31 players will have to
qualify on April 27th or April 28th . You can choose to try to qualify on either date, but only once.
$5.00 entry fee. Number of players who qualify on each day will be proportional to the number of
entrants on those days.
Governor’s Cup: At the first TMC event, a signup sheet will be posted. First 31 teams to sign up will
challenge the team of Greg Garcia (sounds familiar) and John Neligon, 2018 winners.
Individual Match Play: At the first TMC event, a sign up sheet will be posted. First 28 players to sign
up will challenge the four flight winners from 2018, Terry Ruzzo, Rob Clegg, Mike Peterson, and Kevin
Kokoszka. Round 1 played on May 11th, Round 2 on May 18th, and Finals for the 8 man brackets on
May 19th.
Match Play I: This 2 man match event will be the same format as in the past. Five 9 hole matches; 27
holes on Saturday, May 4th, and 18 holes on Sunday May 5th. Sign up through the Pro Shop. Teams
will be flighted by total team handicap. Partners must be within 5 handicap strokes maximum. If a 5
and a 15 want to play as a team, the 15 has to play as a 10, and the team will be flighted as a combined
15. All flights played at gross except the last flight.

One golf tip: You won’t get better sitting on the couch watching Rickie Fowler and company. You
actually have to practice sometimes.

Handicap White and Gold Default Tee:
In order to streamline the signup process and eliminate another step-in human error we will allow
members on the 1st of each month to choose their default tee option (as long as you qualify).
This means you can pick your tee you want to play, and I will change your default in Golf Genius so that
it always pops up as the correct tee. This being said you will no longer have to tell us before teeing off
which tee you would like to play from. IN THAT PARTICULAR MONTH IF YOU BECOME
INELIGLBE YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO PLAY THE WHITE OR GOLD TEE UNTIL THE 1ST
OF THE NEXT MONTH.
On the 1st of each month I will run a diagnostic to see who is still eligible to play their respected tee. If
you are and I have not heard from you by the 1st of the month you will roll over and continue to play
from the same tee. If you have fell out of eligibility, I will contact you via email and change you default
back to the blue tee or white tee whichever that player qualifies for.
My hope is this improves the experience for those of you who play from the forward tees going forward.
Please contact me before the season begins with what tees you would like to play.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Thank you,
Zac Stennett PGA Head Golf Professional Joe Dura Handicap

March News from the Lesson Tee…
Happy Spring Tallwood Men’s Club! It has been a fun and creative winter preparing for the upcoming
golf season. In January I traveled to the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida with Eric, Zac, and Rachel. I
attended several teaching seminars on the topics of golf fitness and junior golf instruction. I also
purchased several new training aids including the Low Zone short game practice kit (Yes, you will be
seeing a few more of my interesting "toys" around the putting green!) and a motion capture sensor called
"Blast." It has 11 putting and 10 full swing metrics to support your golf training. What drew me to this
new technology is its emphasis on timing. So many swing errors are the direct result of poor timing,
which alters the sequencing of motion. And we know what happens then....a loss of distance and
accuracy! I am eager for the snow to melt so I can explore and share my new finds with you.
Birdie Bound Lesson Zone This season I would like to share with you various on course exercises to elevate both your performance
and fun. Although I enjoy and appreciate time spent on the driving range, I often find the most valuable
lessons occur on the golf course. Consider the following challenge when you first tee it up this season...
On Course Exercise: Remain silent immediately after each shot.
Sounds simple enough, but how many times do you find yourself commenting aloud after a poor shot? It
is impossible to tap into your ideal physical/mental/emotional state whenever you judge, rationalize,
justify, comment, spew, or explain. And, let's be honest, no one in your foursome really cares why you
hit your ball in the woods! This season commit to observing each golf shot without judgment and then
simply move forward to your next shot.
Do you know anyone who is interested in learning how to
play golf? LPGA 101 Beginner Clinics for both men
and women start up in April. Any junior golfers in the
family? Check out my website to learn more about
