Dear Parents, Guardians, & Friends, It was a pleasure to host the Valley Lenten Mass on Thursday 22 nd March. To have all the schools together celebrating at the most important season in the liturgical calendar was a joy to behold. It gave the school communities opportunity to welcome Canon McBride to his parish of St James the Less. Could you keep the Year 11 students in your prayers, as they push themselves to achieve their goals; their hard work will be rewarded. On behalf of these students, can I thank the staff for their dedication over this critical period, as many staff are coming in over Easter and staying late after school. Thank you for your continued support as we are once again, over-subscribed with applicants for the upcoming Year 7. We already have an extensive waiting list for more students who want to join us next year! We hope that you all enjoy the celebration of Easter and can find time to attend one of the Easter Masses at our local parishes. The times are enclosed. Please keep Mrs Jeffers, Mr Wood and all our students in your prayers. Regards, Mr McNally Headteacher On Thursday 15th March, over sixty students participated in the annual Creative Arts evening. Parents and family members packed the hall and were wowed by a wonderful variety of performances by students from all year groups. Year 10 Music students impressed with not one, but three, band performances whilst the Year 10 and KS3 Drama groups played extracts from plays they have been studying. The audience gasped at our talented cheerleaders performing stunts, beautiful dance routines and the harmony of the school choir, as well as individual songs, instrumental pieces and a polished performance from our Year 7 band. Tasty cakes and pizzas were provided by the GCSE Cooking & Nutrition students with Friends of All Saints’ also providing refreshments. The art department also provided a colourful display of work, showcasing even more of our students’ talents. The standard of performance was excellent and our compère, Joshua Campbell (10T), did a fantastic job of keeping everyone amused. Well done everyone!

This short half term has been extremely busy for the PE Department with the boys competing in football, indoor athletics, indoor cricket, table tennis and basketball. The Year 11 football team were the last ones remaining in this year’s Lancashire Cup but were knocked out in their last sixteen clash with All Hallows from Preston. The team fought hard before eventually losing 5-2. Octavio Antonio (11MT) scored both goals whilst Tyler McCracken (11R) put in a man of the match display in centre midfield.

The Year 7 boys’ indoor athletics team finished second in the Rossendale Schools’ event which was a superb achievement. The lads performed consistently well in a range of running, jumping and throwing events so well done to; Kyan Van Der Merwe (7T), Tommy Broadhurst (7T), Joe Ormrod (7T), Callum Thomson (7MT), Zack Jackson (7A) and Callum Thomas-Hardman (7T).

The Under 13s indoor cricket team competed in a competition organised by Lancashire County Cricket Club and finished fourth overall thanks to some excellent individual and team performances. Jack Storey (7MT) was consistent with the ball, whilst Jack Thomson's (8R) six-hitting with the bat was a highlight. Kyan Van Der Merwe performed superbly throughout the tournament.

The Year 7 basketballers had two teams in the Rossendale Schools’ event hosted at All Saints'. The blue team finished fifth and the red team were runners up thanks to some

excellent shooting and organised defence. The red team included; Kyan Van Der Merwe, Kii Batey (7T), Ethan Fourie (7T), Jake Cropper (7T) and Billy Urwin (7T). The Year 8 basketballers also entered two teams with similar results. The 'A' team finished runners up on baskets scored after not losing a match all evening and the 'B' team also competed well in what, for some lads, was their first taste of competitive basketball. The Year 9 basketball tournament was held at BRGS and the team performed well to win three and lose three of their six matches. Jenson Jakovlevs (9T) and Jaydon Hoyle (9MT) were the team's major attacking threats whilst Oli McDonald (9R) and Harvey Taylor (9A) worked tirelessly, re-bounding well under both baskets.

The Under 13s table tennis tournament was hosted at All Saints' and we entered Year 7 and 8 teams who performed superbly on the night. The teams finished first and second in their respective groups. Unfortunately, the Year 7s lost out to Whitworth in the final but the Year 8s beat BRGS in the third/fourth play-off meaning that All Saints’ secured the silver and bronze positions! Well done lads! In Key Stage 3 PE this half term, the boys and girls have been taking part in 'Inter-Group' lessons which not only tests the pupils’ sporting prowess in a range of competitions but also their ability to follow themes such as; 'sportsmanship', 'respect', 'resilience' and etiquette'. All pupils have participated brilliantly and winning teams in each class will be rewarded with Easter eggs! Mr M Parkes CL Physical Education

The Year 8s took part in the Rossendale Schools' table tennis competition held at All Saints’ High School. The team consisted of four girls; Hayley Bekier (8A), Leonie Coyle (8MT), Mairead Graham (8R) and Ruby Roberts (8MT). Each girl played a variety of singles games against BRGS.

Everyone in the All Saints’ team worked fantastically with each individual winning a number of games - with Mairead Graham winning the most games in her category. Unfortunately, the All Saints’ team finished second but each member of the team demonstrated an excellent level of focus, co-ordination, determination and sportswomanship.

The Year 7 girls took part in the Rossendale Indoor Athletics Schools’ competition. Lucy Quinn (7A), Hannah Winfield (7A), Mollie Melia-Miller (7R), Lauren McTernan (7T), Freya Brett (7R), Sophie Barron (7R), Farrah Coleman (7T) and Isabel Grime (7R) all worked fantastically as a team. The girls competed in various events including; short distance sprints, long distance endurance runs, relays, throws, jumps and an obstacle relay. Each pupil gave it their best on both the track and field finishing in fourth place.

News from the RE Department This half term has been another busy one in RE! On March 22nd we had our Lenten Valley Mass, which was a wonderful occasion. Canon McBride led us in our Mass and was joined by Fr Thorpe and Fr Boast. We were welcomed by St Mary's Bacup, St Anselm's, St Veronica's and St Mary's Haslingden led us in the Liturgy of the Word. Pupils from All Saints' read our Bidding Prayers and St Joseph's led the Offertory. All pupils were a credit to their schools and it was a privilege to welcome them to All Saints'. Many thanks to our Clergy and all the staff, parents, pupils and parishioners who were able to attend. Many thanks to Miss Padwell and Mrs Starkie for their help with the music and the choir - they sang beautifully. Thank you, also, to the Friends of All Saints' for providing refreshments. Earlier on in the term, we welcomed Mrs Kelly Needham to the Department to talk to Year 8. Mrs Needham is a Lay Chaplain at Holy Cross Sixth Form College in Bury and she was able to talk to the pupils about Lay Vocation - as this has been a topic of study for the pupils. Year 8 were well behaved and able to ask some excellent questions. We have been raising money for St Joseph's Penny this half term and bringing in food for RAFT, which will be distributed to families in our community who use the foodbank. After Easter, it will be exam season - Year 11 will be sitting their Religious Studies papers on 14th, 16th and 24th May. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for their exams.

We are currently planning a retreat to Castlerigg, which will

take place in May. This is for Year 10 and 11

students. Retreats to Castlerigg have been a

long held tradition at All Saints' and we are

looking forward to the pupils being able to experience this.

The Pupil Chaplains have been hard at work helping with our fundraising activities and taking part in preparing our Masses and reflections. They are currently preparing our Lenten reflection for the last day of term. We are allowing all pupils to take part in the faith life of the school - pupils are commissioned as Chaplains in Year 9, but if there are any Year 7 or 8 pupils who would like to be involved, please come along to meetings on a Tuesday lunchtime. All are welcome.

As always, thank you for your continued support for this Department and for our school. I wish you all a happy and Holy Lent and Easter. Mr A Sidlow Curriculum Leader of Religious Studies

At All Saints’ we expect all pupils in Years 7-11 to wear the correct uniform at all times. Appearance reflects school standards and it is an outward sign that our pupils belong to a caring, Catholic community. Appearance, behaviour and work reflect a positive attitude to school and to society in general. In our experience, neglect and carelessness in school attire often indicate a deterioration in behaviour and work.

Blazers are compulsory for Years 7-11. Ties are compulsory for all years. Shoes should be black, with no visible logos and no white or coloured soles. School skirts are optional. Girls’ trousers should be loose, tailored and not skinny,

tight fitting or leggings. Jewellery is one simple stud per ear lobe only, extra ear

studs are not allowed: neither are stretcher earrings. No facial piercings. Make-up and nail polish/gels should

not be worn. Hair colour should be natural & hair styles not extreme. The new PE kit is compulsory.

For full details please see the school website or the Parent Handbook 2017-2018.

Congratulations to Mrs Schofield on the birth of her healthy baby boy. Josh was born on Tuesday 20th February at 11:47pm weighing an impressive 9lbs 9 ounces. The Schofield family are settling into their new routine really well and staff and pupils at All Saints’ can’t wait to meet the new arrival!

Congratulations Mrs Schofield!!
