www.ridgequiltersguild.org March 2018 This cold winter weather has given me the opportunity to work on UFOs. I have 7 project boxes. After some concentrated work, 6 of them are empty! I have to admit that the last one was emptied because I decided to add the coordinated fabrics I collected to my stash. I think I’ll find a pattern to use with the batiks I’ve collected. Batiks are a new venture for me. I am happy to announce that we have a full board. The president role will be shared by Becky Ray and Sheila Groom. VP of Programs will be shared by Ann Slocum and Leeanne Kromer. Laura Lukes has stepped up to be our VP of Workshops. She did such a great job with the home tour and will do the same for workshops I’m sure. Lynn Eads will continue as Secretary and Linda Brown will take over as our Treasurer. I thank these ladies for volunteering. I still need to fill Community Quilts. This is a must for our non-profit status. I know it is one of our bigger jobs but the rewards are greater too. Anita has it all organized and her helpers have agreed to continue helping. You will not be alone! Please give this position serious thought. Perhaps you and a friend can do it together. The other positions still open are Historian and Treasure Table. These positions are not absolutely necessary so we can do without them if necessary. I also have the marketing position for the 2019 opportunity quilt open but that doesn’t need to be filled until the end of August, but think about that one too please. Let me explain my picture this month. I never tried on a big long wedding dress for either of my weddings. One day my sister and I were in a mall with a wedding shop. I made that comment and bang ... my sister had me in the store looking for a wedding dress. I did try on two and discovered how heavy they are. Travis LOVES this picture. Your president, Joan March Meeting Lola Jenkins has had to cancel so our March presenter will be Laurel Anderson, History of Applique The lecture will include an 1850’s style applique quilt, a slide show and many of Laurel’s quilts. She will discuss applique styles and how they changed with the fortunes of our country, including a review of the progression of applique methods and her personal experience with the craft. http://whispercolor.com/about-contact/

This cold winter weather has given me the opportunity to work on UFOs. I have 7 project boxes. After some concentrated work, 6 of them are empty! I have to admit that the last one was emptied because I decided to add the coordinated fabrics I collected to my stash. I think I’ll find a pattern to use with the batiks I’ve collected. General Meeting Minutes – February 20, 2018President Joan McWilliams called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m.

She asked that all cell phones be silenced. Janet Larson moved, Karma Nelson seconded, to approve the minutes of the January general meeting as printed in the newsletter. Motion carried. Kim Morris gave the Treasurer’s Report. Expenses for the month of January were $2,244.10 and income was $1,528.09. The full report is available for members to view at the treasurer’s table. Old Business Joan asked if the March workshop was full; if not, it must be canceled now. Cheryl Wilkinson reported that since the March speaker had had to cancel, there would be no workshop. Joan noted that she is still looking for people to fill the board position of Vice President-Workshops plus some committee positions for 2018/2019: She also announced that Anita Gran is resigning at the end of this fiscal year from her position as Community Quilts Chair. Joan needs to fill that position as well as Pick-a-Prize, Drop-In, Hospitality, Luncheons, Historian and Treasure Table. She noted that these positions can be shared. Marge Eggert volunteered to help Marge Redding with Hospitality. Joan stated that she has asked current board members and committee chairs to update their job descriptions. Bejae Arnold, Quilt Show Co-Chair, pointed out the jar on the front table where members can place their votes for Featured Quilter and Quilt Show name. (She noted that she is still pushing for “Lordy,

Page 3: March 2018ridgequiltersguild.org › uploads › 8 › 2 › 9 › 7 › 82979512 › 2018_march… · March 2018 This cold winter weather has given me the opportunity to work on

Lordy, We’re 40”) Becky Ray, Quilt Show Co-Chair, noted again that the date of the Quilt Show is October 20-21, 2018. She has scheduled a Quilt Show Committee meeting for Thursday, March 1, 2018 (note date change) at 10:00 a.m. at the Senior Center. Becky noted there are no visits planned for the Opportunity Quilt in March at this time. It is scheduled to go to Colusa and Red Bluff in April, both evening meetings. Franci Lamb and Jasie Loving volunteered to go to the Colusa meeting. Ginger Medbery has member tickets available to sell. Joan reminded members that she had asked for ideas where the Guild can make meaningful charitable contributions; she has received a few suggestions. The board will discuss the suggestions at their next meeting. Joan pointed out three quilts in the back of the room that are up for a silent auction. These are three old quilts that had been donated to Community Quilts. She noted that the 2019 Opportunity Quilt, from a pattern by Sue Cody of Australia called “Sweet Surrender” needs one more volunteer for an appliqué kit. The deadline to complete the appliqué is May 1st. She also noted she is looking for a volunteer to quilt it once the top is completed. New Business Joan stated that new members may be looking for a friendship group to join, noting that for the most part, existing groups are full (due to the limited capacity of their meeting place). MJ Howe said she is a member of a group that meets at the Racine Center in Magalia from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; they have space available. It was also noted that Drop-In Thursdays are also available. Linda Cruces volunteered to facilitate forming a new friendship group, if anyone was interested. Lynn Eads and Linda Menicucci spoke briefly about the American Association of University Women (AAUW), explaining the mission of the organization and some of the activities available for members to participate in. They encouraged anyone interested in membership to approach them with questions and/or an application. Member Joan Moore wanted to know who was the maker of the cute baby bibs that were for sale at the Home Tour boutique. Linda Cruces is the creator. Committee Reports: Sheila Groom, Vice President-Programs, noted that Laurel Anderson is the replacement speaker at the March meeting. She will be speaking about the history of appliqué. She has requested a home-stay for Monday night only; Helen Carbonaro volunteered her home. The April meeting will be the member fashion show; Becky Ray will be the MC. Cheryl Wilkinson, Vice President-Workshops, said the workshop the day after the April meeting will be presented by Ginger Medbery, teaching participants how to make a quilt tote. The cost will be $20. On February 21, Lynn Wilder will be presenting a workshop. Linda Brown showed the block of the month due at the March meeting. Anita Gran, Community Quilts Chair, talked about the perks of doing Community Quilts. She read some thank you notes from organizations and individuals that had received quilts, etc. She noted she needed more quilts and walker bags.

Peggy Schrader, Drop-In Chair, commented that they think of themselves as a friendship group; anyone who wishes is encouraged to come. Karma Nelson reported that the organization she volunteers for had delivered 11 bundles of personal items to the homeless center. She stated that they need more hand towels (they can be used towels). She explained that they accept donations of personal items, which they tie up in a bundle, using the hand towels. They donate them first to homeless vets, then the homeless. Gloria Dyer, Membership Chair, announced that 109 people, including 84 members, were present at today’s meeting. She introduced one new member, Donna Greenwald. Joan pointed out that Sun Country Quilters (Red Bluff) were present at today’s meeting with their Opportunity Quilt. Break for refreshments at 10:50 a.m. Returned from break at 11:07 a.m. Sheila Groom, Vice President-Programs, introduced today’s speaker, Lynn Wilder. Lynn shared her accomplishments in the quilting world over the past nine years. She talked about growing up in Paradise and presented a slide show of the quilts she has made over the years as well as a trunk show, tying the quilts into her life’s experiences. She noted that Ginger Medbery and Ann Slocum approached her at a quilt show booth the year that they were program and workshop chairs and asked her to do a presentation to our guild; that was her first speaking experience. Sheila informed members that they would be taking Lynn to lunch at the Black Bear Diner and invited anyone who wished to attend. Pick-a- Prize winners were Fay Johnson, Mary Ann Cooper, Eileen Hollingsworth and Joan McWilliams. Gail Muntifering won the block of the month blocks. Show and tell was provided by Joan McWilliams, Laura Green, Lykke Estrem, Karma Nelson, Laura Lukes, Kathy Roessler, Sally Fried, Betty Iijima, Ann Slocum, Betty Volker, Josie Viscordi and Joanne Robinson. The meeting was adjourned at 12:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted,

Lynn Eads, Secretary

Following a discussion of the ideas that were submitted for agencies to which the Guild could donate this year, Sheila Groom moved, Lynn Eads seconded, to make a donation to the Gold Nugget Museum to be used toward Pioneer Days and/or Days of Living History. Motion carried. Linda Brown agreed to follow up with the museum to determine their needs.

Block of the Month March 2018

At the March meeting we will be collecting the “Cats” blocks. Looking forward to having our wall decorated with all of the cute kitties. Last month our winner of the “Hearts” blocks was Gail Muntifering.

At the March meeting we will be selling the kits for this month's Block of the Month. The title is “Ruby Yankee Puzzle”. We choose this block and are asking that light, medium and dark

RED fabric as the finished blocks will give the winners a head start for entering the Guild's Challenge – 40 Shades of Red. The basic kit includes your pattern and background fabric and it is sold for $1.00. We are asking that each person make 2 of the blocks as they are small, only finished 8”. Linda and Gail.

Thank you Ridge Quilters for buying so many things at the last meeting.

We made $501.50 for Wilma Messina to take with her to her new home. I would like to thank Nancy Wells for all her help. But most of all I want to thank Cathy Anderson for everything she did. All the heavy lifting and such. Would not have been able to do it without her. Sincerely, Lou Marso
