March 2017

"There is no key to happiness. The door is always open."

At DPS Dubai we are always alert, always mindful of the many opportunities that the universe opens

for us to discover, explore, be joyous and succeed. At DPS Dubai we always keep the metaphorical

doors open to welcome happiness.

It was last year that our Principal and Director Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar proposed “Happiness Really

Matters!” as a theme for the academic year. Was it a case of ‘great minds think alike’ that KHDA also

thought of ‘Happiness and Wellbeing’ as one of the key features that every school in Dubai must

promote? Happily for us ‘happiness is a way of life’ at DPS Dubai. Though we moved on to other

themes this year, it is with immense pride that we say that it was DPS Dubai which pioneered the

happiness quotient, and it was none other than our Principal and Director who was so visionary that

she was able to forecast a trend!

A year on, we have come full circle and it is our Principal and Director who has been invited by

KHDA to share her expertise on the journey of embedding wellbeing in schools in Dubai. On

the 14, March 2017 the Principal and Director spoke about “Embedding the culture of happiness

in Dubai schools” at GESS (Global Educational Supplies and Solutions) in partnership with

UAE Ministry of Education. She also spoke of the many great programs our “Happiness

Ambassadors” had the privilege of experiencing in the several schools they visited.

At DPS Dubai we have continued to keep that flame of joy and happiness burning brightly in

everything that we do. We are empowered and inspired to find happiness in everything.

As the academic year 2016-17 comes to a close, we at DPS Dubai shout an exultant hurrah to mark

the culmination of another year of huge success, glory, inner peace and fortitude. The months flew

past and our students thrived in an atmosphere of innovative learning and living the spirit of the vision,

mission and motto of the school which is “Service Before Self”. We have won many laurels and all

of them speak not only of the academic brilliance of our students, but throw light on the multiple

talents of our youth. Of course, at the helm of affairs is our Principal and Director of DPS Dubai

Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, always, with her customary efficiency, vision and idealism guiding our

flagship to greater glory. The mantra of happiness that we have learnt from our Principal are the pillars

of happiness which have been proposed also by KHDA. Our Principal and Director tells us to

guide all our actions by following the “Five Pillars of Happiness” which are:

Connect, Keep Learning, Take Notice, Be Active, Give.

This newsletter is a brief summing up of all the wonderful things that have transpired in the last school

term.

We have tried to categorize our achievements under the five pillars of happiness, but as you know,

happiness is difficult to contain, it is a feeling of contentment and bliss which permeates everything

and everywhere. Something that connects hearts and minds might also be a learning process… Let’s

just be happy, resilient, and positive and thrive in an atmosphere of wellbeing.

"Connecting with others is rewarding; it makes us feel like we're not alone in the

world." - Jonah Berger Our students have made connections with a large audience and their words and actions have resonated

in the hearts of others, we showcase those events which impacted others and made their experience

richer. We focus on cultivating relationships with the community at large.

celebrating their bravery, determination and sacrifice.

May our beloved nation the UAE grow from strength to strength!

DPS Dubai Celebrates Flag Day - Pays Homage to the National Flag

The Flag Day marks the anniversary of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahyan becoming the President

in 2004.

The occasion is an opportunity to remember the efforts of the founding fathers – Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh

Rashid and their brothers from the five other Emirates. As Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice

President and Ruler of Dubai, said, “they sacrificed everything for the sake of our nation,” because of

their vision, the country was able to become a modern and ambitious state.

DPS Dubai showed their allegiance to the nation by saluting the flag with reverence and respect. The entire school stood at attention while the national anthem was sung for their beloved country.

Republic Day Celebrations at DPS Dubai

On the event of the 68th Republic Day, the school gathered to celebrate the principles and pay

allegiance to the invaluable norms that bind us together to our beloved India as a people and a

nation. The Principal and Director, Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, welcomed the esteemed Chief

Guest, Mr. D. C. Kothari, the Pro-Vice Chairman.

A colorful function celebrated the 68th Republic Day of India 25 January with a great deal of patriotic

zeal and fervour. The day began with the hoisting of the Indian Flag by the Chief Guest and our

beloved Principal, followed by the National Anthem. Tri-colored balloons and doves were also

released on the occasion as a symbol of peace, patriotism and freedom.

The events that followed included a very patriotic medley of songs by the choir composed of students

of grades 9 to 11 that paid homage to the motherland, accompanied by a brilliant classical dance by

the Middle School and gymnastics by grades 3 to 5. While the ethereal beauty of the dance forms

depicted the enchanting lyrics of the song, the gymnasts showcased the youthful personality of India

which is vibrant, resilient and disciplined.

The kindergarteners dressed as the martyrs and heroes of the Indian independence movement brought

tears to the eyes of the watching audience.

The gathering witnessed a brilliant march past by the students from grades 1 to 11 wearing their house

colours and proudly displaying their house flag.

the colourful state of India, Rajasthan to undertake a deeper study of the desert culture of the state.

Off to a fun start, they witnessed India’s Broadway, Zangoora the Gypsy Prince- the biggest Indian

musical at ‘Kingdom of Dreams’ in Gurgaon.

The group visited Jaipur, the Capital city of Rajasthan where they visited Amber Fort built in 1592,

to study its architecture, a curious mixture of both Hindu and Muslim Architecture. The students

visited a small scale industry dealing with traditional Rajasthani Block printing. They also witnessed

the making of traditional carpets.

The next stop was Ajmer with a visit to the Dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-din-Chisti. The Khadim

of Dargah, Sir Fareed briefed the team about the history of the Dargah.

Pushkar with its grand semi-arid landscape lifestyle fascinated the students. The Kalbalia Dance

performed by the local village girls and display of fire work by men was the highlight of the evening.

Jodhpur was the next destination, where they explored methods of conserving water in the region of

scanty rainfall through ‘a water walk’ with a conservation expert at the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation.

The highlight of the day was the Jeep and Camel Safari that completed the desert experience of the

team.

The Desert Museum- Arna Jharna was a treasure trove of folk musical instruments. It was indeed an

eye opener for the students to learn that things like pumpkin shells, sea shells, bamboo sticks, buffalo

skin, camel hair etc. were used to make these instruments that date back to 15 century. The students

also got the opportunity to witness a Puppet Theatre and imbibe the art of puppetry that is still an

integral part of the cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

Mehrangarh Fort was described as “a work of giants, built by Titans and coloured by the morning

sun” by Rudyard Kipling. The students and teachers admired this architectural masterpiece that towers

over the Blue city of Jodhpur.

The Step Well- Toorji Ka Jhalara, which has helped old Jodhpur in getting a continuous water supply

was a wonder of ingenuity and skill.

The trip concluded with a visit to Umaid Bhavan, a magnificent piece of Rajasthan's heritage, and a

symbol of new Jodhpur.

Wow, what a meeting of true minds!

event for the graduates whose accomplishments and triumphs this ceremony celebrates, it is special

Dubai presented a beautiful dance matching their steps to the words that echoed the beauty of

“believing in one’s dreams”. It was an inspirational message beautifully interpreted through dance.

Another exquisite moment to cherish forever was when the students ceremoniously placed individual

lamps burning brightly, throwing beams of light of knowledge and illuminating every nook and corner

of the school with their shining rays.

Later in the afternoon, the scholars partied with their beloved Principal, Headmistresses and teachers.

They paid fitting tributes to their school and teachers while the XI graders gave them a time to

remember. Fun citations, selfies, Kodak moments, captured the momentous occasion. It’s Hasta

Mañana, till we meet again. Our students are ready to fly the nest and make the world a better place.

Here is DPS Dubai your loudest cheerleader, rooting for you, cheering for you to go the extra mile

and make a difference in the world.

Keep learning

"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence."

Dipsites engage in learning all the time, and as we know those who keep learning, will keep rising in

life. Here are some platforms that have provided deep and abiding learning not only to our students,

but the whole student fraternity.

Annual Day at DPS Dubai

The Much Appreciated Annual Days of DPS Dubai

Highlighting the theme: #Security is Our Right, The Quintessential Matter – Water and READ

The mega innovative Senior and Middle School Multi-Disciplinary Annual Day boasts 100%

participation. Social consciousness, empathy and moral courage encompass the whole world and the

Annual Days prepare the students to battle the challenges that face children, youth and humanity. It

taps creativity and showcases different talents such as a flair for aesthetics, public speaking, music,

and dance, encouraging students to be informed critical thinkers, innovators and dynamic presenters.

The Multi-Disciplinary Annual Day for Grades IX to XI, # Security is Our Right was a study in

innovation and enterprise.

The Annual Day had a total of 9 competitive events - Hues, Wiz@Quiz, Eureka, Muses Mantra,

Business Hub, Future Design, Mathemania, Ennovation and Showstopper a wonderful

celebration of events to highlight this year’s theme.

At DPS Dubai, we believe that the well-being, safety and security of human beings is of the utmost

importance. This whole year has been fruitfully spent exploring the myriad ways we can make

ourselves and our environment safe and secure. # Security is not just the theme of our Annual Day,

but also the theme of the year as envisioned by our visionary Principal and Director Ms. Rashmi

Nandkeolyar.

A school like DPS Dubai develops not only the powers of the mind but the habits of the heart,

we have a clear ethos based on the central principle of a happy, safe and peaceful life. We impart

lessons for life, building a culture of safety and resilience. We want our children to expect the

unexpected and to take measures to reduce their vulnerability to both natural catastrophe and human-

element perils.

Page 6: March 2017 - Delhi Private School, Dubaidpsdubai.com/DPSDubai/UserSpace/UserName/admin/... · CBSE National Athletic meet India. Yash Kulkarni who bagged a Bronze medal in the CBSE

6

We need to empower Gen Next to be able to combat these and give them a safer haven where the mind

and spirit is free of all fears. Through the theme #Security, we asked ourselves many questions: For

instance, the constant insecurity and violence against women and girls, our incredible lack of

sensitivity to child exploitation, the random acts of terrorism that has become the systematic

weapon of a war that has no borders or seldom has a face, and the modern day plague of cyber

security.

These questions were explored by our talented dancers who created dances of exceptional beauty and

meaning which highlighted the theme. The dances were judged by eminent personalities and prizes

galore were given to the dancers. A live band performed an ode to Bob Dylan as a tribute to his Nobel

win.

Our choir enthralled with a soul stirring performance of the greatest song of rock music, "Stairway to

Heaven".

Our charismatic Principal and Director Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, a fountainhead of illuminating ideas,

welcomed the gathering and inspired the participating teams with her motivating words.

It was our proud privilege to have in our midst our guiding light and mentor Mr. D.C. Kothari, our

Pro-Vice Chairman, and to be addressed by his kind self.

Our parents are our partners and support system. Therefore parents were called on the stage to share

their views on the various events they had witnessed. They spoke glowingly about the creativity and

leadership qualities of the students.

The Multi-Disciplinary Annual Day for Grades VI to VIII explored the theme The Quintessential

Matter – Water.

The Annual Day had a total of 10 events: Tipping-Point, Goonj, Mathalon, Clarion Call, No Line

of Control, Say Aye, Wiz@Quiz, Battle of the Bands, Hues and Show Stoppers.

The show stopper was based on a Hindi musical ‘Jal Hai To Kal Hai’, which explored the theme -

The Quintessential Matter – Water. Water was personified and told a tale of its benevolence and the

exploitative nature of man.

The dances depicted the essence and power of water and its necessity for all life.

The message ultimately was, that if mankind has to survive as a race, we have to do so only through

collaboration and peace and finding innovative solutions to conserving water.

Mr. Abdulla Kutty, Principal, Little Flower English School was the Chief Guest for the event.

The Annual Day for Grades IV and V ‘Cornucopia for Bookworms’ was a wild success. It

explored the theme READ.

It was in fact the students who provided characters for the musical by picking out their favorite fairy

tale characters. So, Robin Hood, Akbar and Birbal, Alice in Wonderland, Red Riding Hood, the Queen

of Hearts, the Wizard of Oz and Geronimo came alive on stage from the pages of the books to enthrall

us bookworms. ‘Cornucopia’ which means ‘plentiful’ was a befitting title as the audience sat spell

bound lost in the fairy land of many tales and folk lore. The play emphasized the love that our students

have for reading.

The ecstatic parents wrote extremely appreciative and warm messages about the Annual Day and also

enjoyed reliving their childhood days by recapturing the memories of the books read in childhood.

Ms. Nargish Khambatta, Principal and CEO Gems Modern Academy as Chief Guest expressed her

delight at the show.

The Annual Sports Day for Grades I to III entitled DPSD Olympics on the theme ‘Tolerance’ was

a magnificent display of the synergy of the students. They set the green field ablaze with their

multihued, trendy sports apparel and lovely costumes. Drills, daredevil gymnastics and athletics had

the audience roaring their approval. Parents mopped their brows in astonishment at the thrilling

7

performance of their wards. The events was a collaborative efforts built on team work discipline and

fair play.

The Kindergarten Annual Day entitled “Further Adventures of Cheelax and Jing” was a

spectacular success. By the way, the play was a sequel to last year’s play Cheelax and Jing. The

tiny tots acted, boogied and simply stole the hearts of the audience with their super cool moves. The

parent community was absolutely enthralled by the whole experience and wrote glowing compliments

about the school’s extraordinary team work and commitment to bring the little ones together to teach

the world about the value of love, friendship, camaraderie and protecting the environment.

It was the vision of our dearest Principal and Director, Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar that launched the

theme and ideas of all the Annual Days. It was her constant support and unstinted guidance that helped

the Annual Days garner such brilliant success.

This herculean effort would not have been possible without the intrepid teachers and the innovative

spirit apparent in every one in DPS Dubai.

“Stop and take your time to notice things and make those things you notice matter.”

We learn at DPS Dubai to stop and take notice of the smaller things, because they mean the most.

Here’s a thought…. when we note snippets of information, are cognizant of the small details of life,

we can become excellent quizzers, even the trivia that others ignore are nuggets of gold to those who

have an open mind and access information gladly- these are our geniuses for they are curious and

problems solvers.

DPS Dubai Supports Dubai Cares Walk for Education 2017

62 students from DPS Dubai showed their solidarity to the 8th Annual Walk for Education, organized

by Dubai Cares, part of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, to walk in support of

millions of children around the world who have limited or no access to education. The walk was

organized on 17, February 2017 with a tag line, Walk the distance. Make a difference.

DPS students congregated for the community event to walk a symbolic 3km route along Riyadh

Road in Dubai to raise funds and heighten awareness about the plight of millions of children

who walk an average of three kilometers every day to go to school in developing countries.

This year’s Walk for Education was in line with the UAE’s 2017 “Year of Giving”, as decreed by

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which aims to foster and strengthen a

sense of community engagement and develop the spirit of volunteering and serving the nation by

involving all members of the community.

DPS Dubai believes in investing in the children of the world who are our future. DPS Dubai stands

committed to providing every deserving child better access to education so that we can help them in

creating and sustaining a better future. We are proud to be associated with this initiative, which has

been growing every year, and would like to wish Dubai Cares the best in this endeavour.

Newspaper and Can Collection Campaign DPS Dubai students enthusiastically participated in the EEG ‘Newspaper and Can Collection

Campaign’. Our students collected 1650 Kgs of newspapers and used cans in the last term.

Education for Sustainability

DPS Dubai students engaged in environmental awareness programs and also actively volunteered for

drives. The scouts and guides have also taken part in several Beach and Park Cleanup Programs.

Give

"Anything that is of value in life only multiplies when given."

“Service Before Self” is the school motto and we at DPS Dubai thrive in giving of our time, our

service and volunteer to make the world a better place. We know that happiness consists in giving

and serving others. These are a few ways that we have found joy in giving:

Mufti Days at DPS Dubai Garner Huge Funds for Charity

Students of all grades come dressed in ‘civvies’ to school looking very chic, dapper and cool on Mufti

Day. DPS Dubai grants Mufti Days to children so that they can donate money for a good cause. DPS

Dubai has therefore been able to donate generously towards noble causes like mitigating hunger,

providing homes for the destitute, buying books for students worldwide and donating to relief funds.

Mufti Days are conducted phase wise.

Bake Sale and Jumble Sale

Students volunteer to bring in fresh home baked goodies for ‘Bake Sales’ during graduation and

Annual Days. Excuse the pun, but they sale like hot cakes and the money generated is used for worthy

causes. Our students also contribute towards jumble sales. They are rewarded with certificates that

honor their altruistic spirit.

Dear parent, if you haven’t visited the school for some time, you must be longing to now, seeing the

happiness of your children as they come to school so eagerly every day. Do step in and see for

yourselves the thousand little ways, by which we have made the school so bright, sparkly and homely

with unexpected nooks and corners that surprise and delight, the walls are awash with colours as they

are the canvases of our students voicing their inner spirit, hopes and ambitions.

It is the promise of making the DPS family happy that we persevere towards excellence. Our students

are gently guided to participate in activities that develop their social and moral fiber, tolerance and

empathy. We leave you with this maxim that we follow at DPS Dubai – “Success is not the key to

happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be

successful.”

Here is looking forward to the new term and much joy and peace.

God Bless

The Media Office.
