Principal's Corner 2016-17 School Year is flying by! It’s hard to believe that we are well into 2nd
semester and before we know it we will be registering our incoming freshmen
and scheduling our current students for the 2017-18 school year. Winter
Sports are winding-down and Spring Sports pre-season conditioning is well
underway. Congratulations to coaches Pennel and Waldrip for an awesome
basketball season, hats-off to coaches Gabin and Hall for an amazing season
of wrestling, and coach Maldonado for a job well done with our soccer
program. Another big kudos goes out to everyone who helped make the AP
Club annual “Geek Streak” run another hit. It’s very special to see how much
community and financial support is generated for our kids. Between the funds
raised for the Shafter High AP Program and the additional support with our
partnership with the City of Shafter, we are on track to have another great
year where no student or family pays out of pocket for their AP test.
If you’ve been by the campus recently you’ve seen the ongoing development
and maintenance of our beautiful campus. The overseeding, regular
maintenance, irrigation upgrades fertilizer and care is keeping our campus
pristine and welcoming to all of our students, parents, community members,
and visitors We continue to get frequent compliments about our campus, and
we are truly blessed with a phenomenal grounds crew who take pride in their
work. You may also have noticed a new marque and Shafter Generals sign in
the front of the campus, improvements to our dugouts, baseball and softball
diamonds, north practice field and Ag facility, as well as the landscaping in
the front of the school.
This is also an exciting time of year as we begin to roll-out additional courses
and electives for Summer of 2017 and the 2017-18 school year. Our summer
school goal is to both support those students who need additional help, as
well as offer additional courses for those students with impacted schedules or
are on an accelerated path. Each year our summer program has grown larger
and larger and we anticipate that same trend to happen again this summer.
We are examining projected enrollment data for next year, and we are
expecting to add another 100+ students which well bring an estimated
opening week enrollment to over 1700 students. This growth combined to our
ongoing support will once again yield another year of expanded programs,
more Career Technical Ed programs & opportunities, as well as additional
core area subjects and electives.

¡El Año Escolar 2016-17 está volando! Es difícil creer que ya estamos en el 2o
semestre y antes de que nos demos cuenta estaremos matriculando a nuestros
estudiantes entrantes al noveno grado y programando los horarios de clase a nuestros
estudiantes actuales para el año escolar 2017-2018. Los Deportes de Invierno están
por terminar y el acondicionamiento de pre-temporada de Deportes de Primavera ya
esta bien en progreso. Felicidades a los entrenadores Pennel y Waldrip por una
temporada de baloncesto impresionante, felicidades también a los entrenadores Gabin
y Hall por una increíble temporada de luchas, y al entrenador Maldonado por un buen
trabajo con nuestro programa de fútbol. Otra gran felicitación va para todos aquellos
que ayudaron a hacer la carrera anual “Geek Streak” del Club AP otro éxito. Es muy
especial ver cuanto apoyo de la comunidad y financiero se genera para nuestros
estudiantes. Entre los fondos recaudados por el Programa AP de la Secundaria y el
apoyo adicional con nuestra asociación con la Ciudad de Shafter, estamos en buen
camino para tener otro gran año donde ningún estudiante o familia tenga que pagar de
su bolsillo por sus exámenes de AP.
Si ha estado en nuestro campus recientemente ha visto el desarrollo continuo y el
mantenimiento de nuestro precioso campus. La realimentación de césped, el
mantenimiento regular, actualización de irrigación, fertilizante y cuidado esta
manteniendo a nuestro campus inmaculado y acogedor para todos nuestros
estudiantes, padres, miembros de la comunidad y visitantes. Continuamos recibiendo
cumplidos con frecuencia acerca de nuestro campus y estamos verdaderamente
bendecidos con un equipo de mantenimiento fenomenal que toma orgullo en su
trabajo. También han de haber notado una nueva marquesina y un rotulo de los
Generales de Shafter en frente del campus, mejoramientos a nuestras casetas,
diamantes de béisbol y softball, campos de práctica del norte y la instalación de
Agricultura, al igual que los jardines en frente de la escuela.
Este tiempo del año también es muy emocionante porque estamos comenzando a
introducir cursos adicionales y electivos para el Verano 2017 y para el año escolar
2017-2018. Nuestra meta escolar para el verano es de apoyar a aquellos estudiantes
que necesitan ayuda adicional al igual de ofrecer cursos adicionales para los
estudiantes que tienen un horario impactado o en un camino acelerado. Cada año
nuestro programa de verano ha crecido más y más y anticipamos que la misma
tendencia ocurra este verano. Estamos examinando la información de proyección de
matriculación para el próximo año y esperamos agregar a 100+ estudiantes lo cual
traerá un estimado de matriculación de más de 1700 estudiantes para la semana de
apertura. Este crecimiento combinado a nuestro apoyo continuo una vez más cederá el
paso a otro año de expansión de programas, más programas de Carrera de Educación
Técnica y oportunidades, al igual que materias principales y electivos.
Gracias por su apoyo continuo y por favor déjennos saber si tiene cualquier pregunta o

Geek Streak
The Shafter High AP Club hosted their 3rd Annual GEEK STREAK 5k Walk/Run on January 28th, 2017. Students,
faculty members, and citizens from the community of Shafter came together to run for fun and help raise money
for Shafter High AP students. All money raised helps students pay for their upcoming Advanced Placement (AP)
test in May. Thanks to all the participants the Geek Streak was a success raising over $ 4,000 with participants
ranging from the ages of three to seventy-four. The AP Club appreciates the Shafter High employees for
sponsoring students, volunteering their help, and for assisting with the run. The club also gives a special thanks to
the race sponsors:

Geek Streak
El Club AP de la Secundaria de Shafter presentó su 3ra Carrera Annual GEEK STREAK 5k Caminata/Carrera el
28 de enero de 2017. Los estudiantes, miembros de la facultad, ciudadanos de la comunidad de Shafter se
unieron para correr por diversion y ayudar a recaudar fondos para los estudiantes AP de la Secundaria de
Shafter. Todo el dinero recaudado ayuda a los estudiantes a pagar por sus proximos examenes de Colocación
Avanzada AP en mayo. Gracias a todos los participantes el Geek Streak fue un éxito, recaudando mas de $4000
con participantes de edades de tres a setenta y cuatro. El club AP agradece a todos los empleados de la
Secundaria de Shafter por patrocinar a estudiantes, ofrecer su trabajo de voluntario, y asistir en la carrera. El club

Do You Owe Money?
Lunch fee’s: Need to be paid as
soon as possible but will be taken
up until the last couple days of
school. The best time to go make
a payment is before or after
breakfast and before or after
lunch.
Library fee’s: Each day a library
book is late, 20 cents is added to
your debt. No late fee is charged
for textbooks. If a book is returned
damaged, where it is unfixable,
you're responsible for payment.
Seniors: ALL of your student debt
must be paid or resolved prior to
graduation day. This means you
should check with the cafeteria to
clear up any debts there. Students
with outstanding debt will not be
allowed to cross the stage at
graduation and no one wants that
to happen. Check into any debts
you may have right away, you
don't want to wait in seemingly
endless lines in order to clear your
debt.

Prom 2017
The 2017 Junior-Senior Prom will be held
at the JC’s Place in Downtown Bakersfield
on Saturday, April 22nd 7pm-11pm. The
tickets will be $65, but listen to the morning
bulletin for special discount days and when
you can start purchasing them. The theme
this year is Great Gatsby. You will be
immersed into the roaring twenties with a
jazzy experience. You don’t want to miss
out on Prom this year, it is going to be at a
new venue, which means plenty of room to
dance! There will also be a photobooth,
delicious dinner from Hodel’s, dessert bar,
and a game and lounge area. Students
from a younger grade can attend with an
invitation from a current junior or senior. If
you would like to invite someone from a
different school or a previous graduate they
can not be older than 19 and must meet the
Dean’s criteria. See the Dean for more
information. It is going to be the best prom
EVER!!!
Important Dress elegantly but comfortably as you are
going to be dancing all night, Ladies make
sure to bring an extra pair of shoes
because we all know you won't last all night
in high heels!
If you are a senior definitely attend, it is
your last senior prom!!
Make sure to have your ID card! No ID, no
admittance.

¿Debes Dinero?
Deudas de Lonche: Necesitan
ser pagadas lo mas pronto posible
pero tambien se podrán pagar
hasta los últimos días de escuela.
El mejor tiempo para hacer pagos
es antes o despues del desayuno
y antes o despues de lonche.
Deudas de Biblioteca: Cada dia
que un libro esté tarde, se agrega
20 centavos a su cuenta. No se
cobran recargos por libros de
texto. Si un libro se regresa
dañado, donde no se puede
reparar, usted sera responsable
por el pago.
Estudiantes del 12: Toda su
deuda de estudiante debe ser
pagada o resuelta anter del día de
graduación. Esto significa que
necesitas verificar con la cafeteria

- Habrá una reunión para estudiantes

comenzarán a vender el 1ro de

Baile de Gala 2017
El Baile de Gala del 11 & 12 tomará lugar en
JC’s Place en el Centro de Bakersfield el
sábado, 22 de abril de 7 pm - 11 pm. Los
boletos tendrán un costo de $65, pero
escuchen los anuncios matutinos para días
de descuesto especial y cuando podrás
comprarlos. El tema de este año es el Gran
Gatsby. Serás transportado a los rugientes
años veinte con una experiencia jazzística.
¡Este año no querrás perderte el Baile de
Gala, va a ser en un lugar nuevo, lo que
significa que habrá suficiente lugar para
bailar! También habrá una cabina
fotográfica, cena deliciosa de Hodel’s, barra
de postres, una área de juegos y sala de
estancia. Los estudiantes de un grado menor
pueden asistir con la invitación de un
estudiante del grado 11 o 12. Si quieres
invitar a alguien de otra escuela o a un
graduado, no pueden tener más de 19 años y
deben satisfacer el criterio de la Decana. Ve
a la Decana para mas información ¡¡¡¡Va a
ser el mejor baile de gala DE TODOS LOS
TIEMPOS!!!!
Importante Vístanse elegante pero cómodos porque
bailarán toda la noche. ¡Muchachas
asegúrense de traer un par de zapatos extra
porque sabemos que no durarán toda la
noche en sus zapatillas!
¡¡Si eres un estudiante del grado 12
definitivamente debes asistir, porque este
será tu último baile de gala!!

Spotlight on Sports!
Swimming This is going to be a great
season for the Shafter High
School Swim Team! We
jumped in the pool early this
year in mid-January and
began swim meets at the end
of February.
Some exciting new things are
happening this season! We
have the opportunity to
participate in a few clinics ran
by Olympic Swimmer and
Medalist, Gabe Woodward.
This is a great opportunity for
our advanced and beginning
swimmers! We will also be
hosting 5 meets at our pool
right here in Shafter! We
hope to see a lot of the
community come out and
support our swimmers. Our
team has doubled in size this
year, which is great news! It's
amazing to see the program
grow and I can't wait to see
what the team will do!

other. He also noticed that the administration and staff had been very supportive and extremely generous.
Shafter High had rejuvenated his desire to teach again. Mr. Reyes has been recently using an Apple TV for his
method of teaching. What he likes about the ipads is that they’re like a white board that he can walk around
the classroom with and teach wherever he desires. When students are asked to solve a problem they are
handed the ipad and then can easily solve the problem from their desk. He hopes some day soon the ipads are
used throughout the school and district because they are so beneficial. In a math class alone, the result are
endless. What inspired Reyes to use an Apple TV is that when he first started teaching he had used an
overhead projector but always ended up with marker on his hand. Eventually he switched to using document
camera but being left handed, his hand would always cover up the writing and that was inconvenient for his
students. He had been using Apple TV and Airplay for his own benefit when he realized he could use this
technology at work. In his free time Mr. Reyes loves to play video games. Some of his favorites games are the
Final Fantasy series and The Legend of Zelda. He is also a huge Star Wars fan and plays a mean bass guitar.
Reyes has been playing guitar for about thirteen years and can play nearly every genre of music. However, he
especially has a place in his heart for Funk music and Slap Bass.

Mr. Reyes is a graduate of Centennial High School and
attended CSUB graduating with a bachelor's degree in
mathematics. Reyes says he has always loved mathematics but, in
high school he didn’t do any of his homework and continuously
received low grades despite receiving A’s on his exams. His
teacher was fed up and told Reyes’ that he was wasting his
potential. From that point on he found motivation and earned high
marks in high school. That teacher was the reason why he is
teaching today. The impact Reyes’ teacher had on him is the same
he wants to have on his own students. After several years teaching
at another high school in KHSD, Reyes became disillusioned and
stopped teaching. After some time he became a substitute teacher
for Shafter High and enjoyed how everyone was treating each

nuevo . El Sr. Reyes ha estado usando una televisión Apple para su método de eseñar. Lo que le gusta de los
Ipads es que son como una pizarra blanca que puede caminar por el salón y enseñar donde quiera. Cuando se
les pide a los estudiantes que resuelvan un problema,se le entrega el Ipad y puden resolver el problema
facílmente desde su escritorio. Él espera que algún día los Ipads se usen en todas las escuelas y el distrito
porque son tan beneficiosas. En una clase de matemáticas, los resultados son interminables. Lo que inspiró al
Sr.Reyes a usar una television Apple fue cuando comenzó a enseñar el utilizaba un proyector, pero siempre
terminaba con marcador en la mano. Con el tiempo pasó a usar la cámara de documento, pero siendo zurdo,su
mano siempre cubría el trabajo y era incómodo para sus estudiantes. Él había estado usando Apple y Airplay
para su propio beneficio cundo se dió cuenta que podía usar esta tecnología en el trabajo. En su tiempo libre el
Sr. Reyes le encanta jugar a los videojuegos.Algunos de sus juegos favoritos son la serie Final de Fantasia y La
Leyenda de Zelda. Él es también un gran fan de Star Wars y toca formidable el bajo.Él Sr. Reyes ha estado
tocando la guitarra por cerca de trece años y puede tocar casi todo género de música. Sin embargo,él tiene

El Sr.Reyes es un graduado de la secundaria Centennial y asistió

Reyes dice que siempre ha amado las matemáticas,pero en la escuela
secundaria no hacia nada de tarea y recibía calificaciones bajas a
pesar de recibir A en sus exámenes. Su maestro estaba fastidiado y le
dijo al Sr.Reyes que estaba perdiendo su potencial. A partir de ese
momento encontró motivación y tuvo altas calificaciones en la
escuela secundaria. Ese maestro fue el motivo por el que enseña hoy.El
impacto que el maestro del Sr.Reyes tuvo en él es mismo que quiere
tener en sus propios alumnos. Después de varios años esneñando en
otra escuela secundaria en KHSD. El Sr. Reyes se desilusionó y dejó de
enseñar. Después de algún tiempo se convirtió en un maestro suplente
para la secundaria de Shafter y disfrutó de cómo cada uno se trataba.
Él tambien notó que la administración y el personal habían sido muy

A six week curriculum parent
class designed to help the
parents in our community
develop leadership in our
neighborhoods. This is the key to
raising happy, healthy children
that contribute to safe
communities. The class is six
weeks long and meets once a
week for two hours. There will be
both Spanish and English

Incoming Freshman Orientation
and Registration Orientation will be on March 23 @ 6:00.
You will get information on the classes and
clubs we offer here at Shafter High.
You will also find out what your child will
need in order to graduate. You have a
chance to meet some of the staff members
including the Freshman counselor.
Orientation is the perfect time to buy a
Gold Package which includes, your child’s
P.E. clothing, Shafter attire, and pre-order
of your 2017-2018 yearbook.
Registration will be on March 27-28 from
4:00-8:00.
Your child’s registration date will be given
to you on the folder you receive on
orientation night.
To register your child, you will need your
child’s birth certificate and social security
card, and proof of address. Your child’s
picture will be taken for their school ID at
registration, so come prepared.

Theater News The Shafter High Performing Arts Club
will be presenting SEUSSICAL: THE
MUSICAL as their Spring 2017
production on April 27-29 @ 7:00 PM in
the auditorium. This delightful story
follows Horton the Elephant (Chance
Rubalcado), Jojo the Who (Katelyn
Akman) and the Cat in the Hat (Anthony
Coon) as these and many other Seuss
characters discover “Anything’s
Possible” with the “Thinks You Can
Think.” Shafter staff members Doug
Thompson (as General Genghis Khan
Schmidt), Dave Boyt, and Carla Stanley
(both as Judge Yertle the Turtle) will
share the stage with the 40 student
actors and technicians. Philip
Bustamante will lead the pit orchestra for
even more excitement with live music for
the performers! This will be Mrs.
Stanley’s last performance at Shafter
High as she is ending her 20 year
teaching career in June. Hope to see
you at the show!
HQTV News Shafter High has its very own broadcast
show called HQTV. Students do
announcements and weather every day.
They also do stories every other Friday
on clubs and activities. Every Monday
students ask a question to the viewers.
People will send in their answers on
Instagram and on Friday they will pick 3
and say what was answered. The
students in this class are working
together and doing everything from
anchoring to running a camera. The cast
members and crew include: Abigail
Eggleston, Jaden Pierucci, Jose
Mendez, Jaasiel Ramirez, and
Roseanna Sharp. Other than being
broadcasted through the school they
also have a YouTube channel called
HQTV News. So tune in next time to see
a super epic fantastic episode of HQTV,
Shafter High’s News Source.

Tutoring Finals will be here before you know it so hurry on in
and get the help you need.
Tutoring days are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays
from 3:00- 7:00pm in the library. The tutoring program
is an after school program where you can complete
assignments, re-take tests, and/or get the extra
teaching needed to understand curriculum from our
staff of four teachers, five tutors, and numerous
volunteers.
