FindYourTRUOurnewbrandwasrevealedtoagroupofapproximately500students,faculty,staffandcommunitymembersonFeb.25.Theeventshowcasedabrandstrategy,launchcampaign,comprehensivevisualidentityandtagline,andintroducedthestudentsfeaturedinthecampaign.Thecelebrationincludedfreecoffee,hotchocolate,cookiesandswag:FindYourTRUtravelmugs.CanadaResearchChairAwardedinTourismDr.CourtneyMasonhasbeenappointedasTierIICanadaResearchChairinRuralLivelihoodsandSustainableCommunitiesintheFacultyofAdventure,CulinaryArtsandTourism.MillwrightFoundationApprovedAnewIndustrialMechanic(Millwright)FoundationCertificatehasbeenapprovedfortheSchoolofTradesandTechnologythankstofundingfromSchoolDistrict73andtheBCIndustryTrainingAuthority(ITA)andiscurrentlyrunningitssecondintakeoftheprogramattheNorKamTradesCentre.2016DistinguishedAlumniAnnouncedThreealumniandalocaltransportationcompanywillreceiveTRUDistinguishedAlumniAwardsonApr.7:DeanNelson(’92),ResortHotelManagementDiploma,HumanRightsLeadershipAward;LindaJules(’07),BachelorofFineArts,Arts&CultureAward;GurbirSandhu(’02),BachelorofSocialWork,GraceChronisterAward;andArrowTransportationSystemsInc.,MilestoneAchievementAward.HorticultureOfferedinWilliamsLakeInresponsetoregionaldemand,anewHorticultureTechnicianFoundationprogramwillbeofferedforthefirsttimethisspringattheWilliamsLakecampus,with$107,920inone-timefundingfromtheprovince.CampusPlanTownHallAtatownhallonMar.9,theTRUcommunitywasinvitedtolearnaboutrecentprogressontheimplementationofthe2013CampusPlanandnextstepsfortheTRUCommunityTrust(TRUCT)tomoveforwardontheuniversityvillagedevelopment.StudentsNetworkatJobFairMorethan1,800studentsattendedJobFaironMar.3,meeting155representativesfrom57employersinIT,tourism,healthcare,financialservices,trades,andmore.

PakhomenkoNamedCISPlayeroftheYearAnnouncedMar.10,WolfPackwomen’svolleyballplayerIuliiaPakhomenkoisCanadianInteruniversitySport’sPlayeroftheYear.AlsoaCISAll-Canadianforthesecondyearinarow,theMasterofBusinessAdministrationstudentledtheleagueinkillsandkillsperset.ACECo-opStudentoftheYearTRUBachelorofSciencestudentCarleePoleschukistherecipientoftheAssociationforCo-operativeEducation(ACE)BC/YukonUniversityCo-opStudentoftheYearAwardfor2015.KnowledgeMakersSeventeenAboriginalstudentsspentReadingWeekbecomingKnowledgeMakersaspartofaprogramdesignedtoencourageAboriginalundergraduatestudentstoengageinresearch.NursingReleasesStrategicResearchPlanAlauncheventonMar.7celebratedNursing’snewSRP,“MakingaDifference:ScholarshipandResearchintheSchoolofNursingatTRU2016-2021”,withposterpresentationsofresearchinfouridentifiedthemes.GalaRaises$70,000TheTRUFoundation’sannualflagshipfundraiserdrew330guestsandraisedmorethan$70,000towardsstudentawards.Thesold-outeventonFeb.13featuredaViennese-themedmenu,entertainmentandraffleprize—aEuropeanrivercruise.BasketballAdvancestoFinalFourWolfPackmen’sbasketballwillfacetheUBCThunderbirdsattheCanadaWest“FinalFour”,thefirsttimetheWolfPackhasadvancedtotheplayoffs.TRULawTakesSecondatBCCupTRULawplacedsecondattheannualBCLawSchoolsCompetitiveMootFeb.13-14inVictoria,whereteamsfromUBC,UVicandTRUcompetedinappealmootcourt.AHubforInvasiveSpeciesResearchDr.BrianHeise,NaturalResourceSciences,hasbeenappointedchairoftheInvasiveSpeciesCouncilofBC(ISCBC).Hewillbeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofnationalresearch-basedpolicy,andhopestoexpandthecouncil’sfocusonresearch.CoachoftheYearForthesecondyearinarow,aTRUbasketballcoachhasbeennamedCanadaWestCoachoftheYear.WolfPackmen’sheadcoachScottClarkhasledtheteamtothebestrecordinschoolhistorythisyear.

JasonJohnstonwasoneof17AboriginalstudentswhoattendedtheKnowledgeMakersprogramtogetinvolvedinresearch.
BrianHeise,NaturalResourceSciences,hasbeenappointedchairoftheInvasiveSpeciesCouncilofBC(ISCBC).
ExtendedSweaterDaysBundledUpSavingsToincreasetheimpactofNationalSweaterDayoncampus,theheatwasturneddownforthreedaysFeb.2to4,witharesultingsavingsof14%.Ifloweredforayear,thatwouldtranslateto$70,000inenergysavings.DrinkwithClassAninvestmentfromtheprovincialgovernmentwillassistintransformingthecultureofdrinkingoncampusthroughtheDrinkwithClasscampaign,partoftheChangingtheCultureofSubstanceUseproject.AboriginalAwarenessWeekThisyear’sAboriginalAwarenessWeekfromFeb.28toMar.4featuredanElders’LuncheonandatalkonReconciliationinAction,aswellasdance,film,a9-hourlahaltournament,andcraftslikeInuitharpoon-making.FirstPlaceforCheerTeamTheWolfPackCheerTeamtookhomefirstplaceattheMardiPartiChampionshipsinRichmondonFeb.27.TRU’s20-memberteamcompetedagainstfiveotheruniversityteamsintheCollegiateLevel4Division.LawStudentsShadowJudgesFifteenTRULawstudentsgainedvaluableinsightintothejudicialprocessFeb.15to19,inauniqueprograminwhichtheywereabletoshadowajudgeforaday.CulinaryStudentsAttendCanadianChampionshipsFiveCulinaryArtsstudentswereinvitedtoplaysupportingroleswithteamscompetingintheCanadianCulinaryChampionshipsFeb.4to6inKelowna.
TRU’sextendedSweaterDaysFeb.2to4featuredaHockeySweatercontest—showniscontestwinner,studentLaneHaller.
WolfPackSweepsPresident’sCupForthesecondstraightyear,theWolfPackbeattheHeattotakehomeboththemen’sandwomen’sPresident’sCup—afriendlyannualrivalrybetweenTRUandUBC-OinallCanadaWestsports.WorldKidneyDayNursingstudentsorganizedthethirdannualhealthfaironMar.10,helpingtospreadawarenessabouttheimportantroleourkidneysplayinouroverallhealth.LunchwiththePresidentALunchwiththePresidentforstudentswasheldonFeb.24.FacultyandstaffhadlunchwiththepresidentonMar.7.
Achievements
PaulAntonelli,MasterofSciencestudent,sharedfirstprizeinthepostercategoryatthe37thannualPacificEcologyandEvolutionConferenceinBamfieldFeb.26to28,for“FacilitatingMineRestorationwithOrganicAmendmentsandNursePlants”.JimHu,ESL,wasselectedtoadjudicateapplicationsforInternationalTravelGrantawardsforTESOLInternationalinDecember2015.MuhammadMohiuddin,InternationalBusiness,wasnominatedasanexternalevaluator/revieweroftheresearchgrantoftheOntarioMinistryofAgriculture,FoodandRuralAffairs(OMAFRA)andUniversityofGuelphresearchprogram.DianaSkoglund,MarketingandCommunications,hasbeenappointedforathree-yeartermtotheboardofdirectorsoftheCollegeofOpticiansofBritishColumbia,whichensuresthepublic’svisionneedsaremetsafelyandeffectivelybyBClicensedopticians.
PeterSoberlak,Education,hasbeenhonouredwithaWesternHockeyLeagueAlumniAchievementAward.HespentfourseasonswiththeWHL(1985-89),playingwiththeBlazersandtheSwiftCurrentBroncos,wherehewonthe1989MemorialCup.HealsoservesastheKamloopsBlazers’mentalperformancecoach.
