The weather in March sure can be unpredictable and generally does an excellent job of keeping all of us on our toes! Despite the back and forth weather changes, we can all gladly agree that spring is just around the corner! But have you ever wondered where this old weather saying started? The “In like a lion, out like a lamb” saying is an idiom that is intended to describe the weather changes that occur during the month of March. The initial origin of this saying dates back to the 17th century. As for its history, that is a little more complicated. Some say that it originated from the stars. The constellation Leo (the Lion) is very prominent during the beginning of March but by the end of the month, Aries (the Ram) is more visible in the March night sky. Others say that it refers to Jesus’ first appearance as the sacrificial lamb and his return as a lion. Still others say it is a just a saying that came about to describe the usual patterns of weather that we see indicating that it is soon the start of spring. Regardless of which explanation for this weather saying you might believe, there are still many things to look forward to with the approaching spring. Here are just a few things that I look forward to each year: 1. Green & a burst of other colors: I am so excited that soon we will see green grass coming back to us! This also means that we will begin to see an assortment of flowers popping up again as well! Along with the green and the flowers comes longer days with more sunshine! And I don’t think I know of anyone who would not welcome more sunshine in their day. 2. Less winter gear: Soon the days of carrying a sweater, thick coat, boots, shoes, mittens, hats and all other winter gear will be behind us. Our bright colored cloths will be dug out of storage and arranged back in the front of our closets. 3. Furry and feathered friends return: It is amazing that for most of winter, we hardly see any of our little furry or feathery friends, but around this time of year they return in full force! I am excited to hear birds chirping in the morning when I wake up and to see rabbits hopping happily around the yard again. 4. A fresh start: Spring marks the beginning for most living things once again & offers the promise of a wonderful summer stretched ahead. With all of these glorious changes happening around us, I hope that you are taking time to enjoy each of the blessings that this season brings. And, I don’t think it hurts- particularly in Minnesota - to be hopeful for a little more lamb-like weather than lion this spring! Happy spring everyone! Sundowner’s Syndrome: Recognizing and Managing It

By Ava M. Stinnett Daylight saving time (DST) was first suggested by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 with the purpose of making better use of daylight and conserving energy. The idea didn’t take off until much later, with numerous variations of DST throughout history. Many folks dread changing their clocks twice a year, especially in the fall. With limited daylight, some people get the winter blues, characterized by irritability, lethargy, a change in sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and depression. Some physicians refer to this as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Sundowner’s syndrome (or sundowning), which shares some of the same characteristics as SAD, sometimes affects people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Sundowning isn’t a disease but a group of symptoms that occur at a specific time of the day, specifically beginning at dusk and into the evening. You may notice confusion, anxiety, aggression, or ignoring directions. Sundowning can also lead to

Page 5: March 2016 Edition March Birthdays! 601 Village …...March-Lions & Lambs March 2016 EditionMarch The Boulder Reminder Birthdays! 601 Village Drive Marshall MN, 56258 Odds and Ends…

suspicion, delusions, pacing, or wandering. The exact cause of this behavior is unknown; however, researchers have noted the following triggers:

End-of-day exhaustion (both mental and physical)

Upset in the internal body clock, causing biological mix-up between day and night

Reduced lighting, which can make already challenged vision even more challenging

Diminished levels of melatonin—a naturally occurring hormone that induces sleepiness

In a care facility, activity during staff shift changes or the lack of structured activities in the late afternoon and evening

Tips for Managing Sundowning Always keep in mind that fatigue plays a major role in sundowning.

Routines help those experiencing sundowning to feel safe. Try to maintain a predictable schedule for waking, meals and activities, and bedtime.

As the sun goes down, keep rooms well lit so that your loved one can see while moving around. Night lights often help reduce stress if they need to get up in the night for any reason.

Try to reduce background noise and stimulating activities, including TV viewing. Play familiar gentle music in the evening or relaxing sounds of nature, such as the sound of waves or a rain forest.

Keep orienting people confused by sundowning to where they are and what is happening so that they feel secure and well protected.

Do not argue with the person. This rule of thumb becomes more crucial with sundowning’s intensifying behavioral problems.

Try whatever works to calm the person, from a favorite pastime to simply folding clothes.

It’s important to always keep in mind that people with Alzheimer’s do not have control over their behavior and that their occasional exasperating behavior stems from the inability of the brain to sort out a confusing environment. Have a wonderful March, Jamie Lanners, Housing Manager

Stepping Stone News

“It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've

got it, you want—oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want,

but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

― Mark Twain

Believe it or not, SPRING is upon us. March 20th is the mark of the

first day of spring. It’s always a good feeling when we know spring

is getting closer. Spring is a time to look around and throw away or

donate any unused stuff lying around. If there is nothing to get rid of then it may just be a time

to re-organize your living area. Listed below are a few ways to help prepare for spring.

If you are managing your own medication. Set aside a time to go through where you

store your medication and get rid of expired or unused medication. Store medicines

in a cool, dry, dark place. Please dispose medication in a correct location.

o A correct location in Marshall, MN is the sheriff’s department.

Maintain a clear walkway to reduce the risks of falling. This can be done by removing

unnecessary items that have accumulated and are in the way of the walkway.

o Remove throw rugs as they increase the risk of falling.

Clear out the refrigerator and cupboards of any old food.

Know who to call in an emergency

o If you are in an emergency you can call 911 or if you need help call *4. *4 will

ring a 24 hour home health aide that is here. They can then assist you accordingly.

There are also pull cords in apartments that can be used in case of an emergency.

Use cordless cleaning tools and lightweight equipment for household chores.

o Due to reduced strength and mobility never try moving pieces of furniture on your

own. Also, when needing to clean or reach for something in high spots, such as

changing a light bulb, don’t stand on a ladder or chair.

Periodically check your smoke detector, fire extinguishers and Emergency Kits.

As spring approaches and spring fever sets in it may be the perfect time to

throw away or donate unused stuff in your living area. It may just be a time to

reorganize. Hope the tips listed above help you as we near the first day of

spring on March 20th.
