I hope all is well with everybody! We have been on a little hiatus the last couple of months; El-evate Lifestyle formed a partnership with CBS Radio late 2012 so we needed to re-group. We will be working with CBS and creating some awesome opportunities for our readers and businesses of all sizes. The first opportunity that we have is a program called “CBS Res-taurant of the Week”; each week on all seven of our stations we will have a feature restau-rant. Check out the advertisement on page six for more details. Stay tuned for lots of exciting opportunities that this partnership will create.

It’s warming up so it’s the perfect time for our “Annual Spring Fashion Is-sue.” We have you ladies covered with some of the hottest trends for this spring; from clothing, to hair, to makeup. Men, we didn’t leave you out, we profiled several men’s boutiques for all your styling needs- including the newest in the market, SILVERFLY.

With the nice weather approaching, it also means the SOCIAL SCENE of Charlotte is getting ready to kick off!! One of the best parties of the year, or should I say bar crawls; is Rich and Bennett’s St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl. It’s the world’s largest with over 15,000 of your closest friends. Then join Elevate on Wednesday, March 27th at Chima’s for a charity benefit to raise money for two good friends of mine who are heading to Haiti for a mission trip. Check out our Facebook page for more details.

CharlotteONEServing Faithfully Multiple Denominationsat ONE TimeA Church it is not. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let me tell you what CharlotteONE is.

CharlotteONE is a faith based non-profit organization that serves young professionals in their 20‘s and 30‘s in Charlotte and surrounding areas who might have lost interest in things of faith or the local church. Provid-ing a pathway, if you will, for young adults to come together to meet, learn, connect and serve; a way to re-engage young professionals in a spiritual community and possibly help find a Church home that fits their beliefs and lifestyle.

CharlotteONE began May 2006, in a South Charlotte Gymnasium with a few young adult pastors from different local churches that wanted to boost par-ticipation in the church among the young professional demographic. Tested as a 4 week trial, they had about 200 people show up with an interest in

Page 19: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

17

what they were doing, that interest has grown significantly over the past years and have seen as many as 700 plus people on a Tuesday night . Gatherings are now held at The First United Methodist Church in Uptown every Tuesday from 7pm to 8:15 pm. Don’t feign shock, if you find yourself at Rock Bottom Brewery afterwards enjoying food and drink. You won’t be judged here, because it is their goal, the reason for starting this gathering, to provide a place where people can not only explore Christianity, but to be introduced to the person of Jesus and the church, or be reintroduced to a previous faith you may have lost interest in.

While CharlotteONE is not associ-ated with nor funded by any particular church or denomination, they collabo-rate with multiple area churches as an outreach service to ignite young professionals passion in God’s word and they work across denominational lines. You can meet and learn from at-tendees from all walks of life who are seeking purpose in life, answers or looking to find a church home that fits their particular needs. They believe that every person regardless of race, education, or sexual orientation are

created in God’s image and therefore have infinite value and worth. CharlotteONE also provides education, resources and best practices in regards to ministry to this demographic.

Described as “breathing new life into the young professionals of our city”, CharlotteONE’s impact is being felt city-wide. Their attendance is growing steadily simply by word of mouth, and what a word it is! Char-lotte, the City of Churches (for the number of churches located within Charlotte) is coming together as ONE to achieve a common goal. They have moved young professionals to become a part of something great, and necessary. An inspiration to many, they’ve received donations from those grateful for the experience and the opportunity to be paired with a church home, one donation of $100,000 was given to help support all they do.

Page 20: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

18

Not only giving time to area church-es, they donate time and hard work back to the city of Charlotte and abroad as far as Darfur, Sudan in Africa. CharlotteONE has hosted Blood drives with the Red Cross, helped provide and set up tempo-rary housing for over 100 homeless families in Charlotte. Pairing up with Samaritans Feet, they have washed the feet of more than 300 of our homeless community and provided each with new shoes. They provide mentoring and tutoring to at-risk children in Charlotte as well as vol-unteering at Hall House, partnering with the Charlotte Housing Authority

to paint, clean and set up housing for just a few of the over 4,800 home-less children that are currently enrolled in our Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

A great success (connecting almost 48% of members to a local church) and inspiration to other cities CityONE Network was developed in March 2011 to help assist and empower local churches in cities across the nation to reach young professionals for Christ and connect them to a local church and Phoenix became the first city to join CharlotteONE within the network. As for Charlotte transplants, CharlotteONE has made 91% of its transplants feel more comfortable living in Charlotte with 78% stating they have chose to remain in the Queen City due to their efforts! Not too shabby on our economic growth!

You may want to know a little more about the CharlotteONE organiza-tion and who started this amazing effort for our city, well, that’s where David Hickman comes in. A husband and father of two boys, David serves as CharlotteONE’s Executive Director and was the founder and lead visionary for CharlotteONE. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible and Religion from Montreat College and a Master of Divinity de-

Page 21: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

gree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, David’s passion is to see young professionals come to know the love of God through Jesus Christ. David’s Leadership team consists of Ross Chapman, Christine Elliot and Bryce Johnson who all play vital roles in the development and growth of CharlotteONE. They are governed by a local Board of Directors consisting of area pastors and marketplace leaders.

Check out their website www.Char-lotteONE.org for more information on CharlotteONE and some of their upcoming events. You’ll find music events, volunteer opportunities, news on CharlotteONE and what guest speakers are visiting Charlotte. March 12th, Donald Miller a New York Times multiple Best Selling Author and public speaker will be at CharlotteONE. He is the founder of Storyline and wrote familiar books such as Blue Like Jazz and A million Miles in a Thousand Years. March 26th CharlotteONE will be hosting Jars of Clay and on April 23rd Kristian Stanfill (Passion Worship Artist).

CharlotteONE has been a growing force in the Charlotte community and will continue to grow amongst the young professionals in Char-lotte. If you find yourself wanting, needing a new connection to God

and His word and aren’t sure where to begin, CharlotteONE is a good place to start, check them out, and parking is always free and easy to find!

A Taste of Charlotte! One thing’s for sure – Charlotte is quite the foodie city. Each year, a new slew of restaurants, bars, cafes, eateries and dives open their doors to the public, offering new flavors and new atmosphere. This year is no exception but hey, we love checking out the newest concepts brought to the QC. Here are some of the newest spots looking to put their names on the map – and here’s to hoping these places offer eccentric dishes, delicious cocktails and plenty of Fri-day nights out. Cheers!

Hubee D’s Tenders & WingsHubee D’s is the newest shop to hit Providence Road. Known for their fresh, never frozen signature chicken tenders sliced in house; this location will be set at the corner of Middleton and Providence, across from Boston Market. While some may consider this fast food, Hubee D’s prefers to be called what it really is: “fast fine food”. The jumbo wings are slow smoked for hours in special seasoning while the cole slaw and cornbread are made fresh daily each morning. While you can get your order fast, Hubee D’s prides itself on quality and freshness. With three shops in the Charleston area that are already locals’ favorites, the new Charlotte location is set to open mid-March and is bringing their amazing banana pudding with them. 815 Providence Rd. | HubeeDs.com

Block & GrinderEager patrons have been driving by the former Panda Express location in Cotswold for months now, waiting for Block & Grinder to open their doors. It shouldn’t be too much longer now as owners are finishing up the décor and putting the final touches on the bar area. Block & Grinder is part butcher shop, offering customers’ fresh cuts of steaks, priced from $15 to the low

$30s, as well as house made deli meats and high-end burgers with the meat ground daily throughout the day, and fashioned with the owners’ reci-pe. You can also swing in and grab a crafted dish from their executive chef, as B&G is also a nice neighborhood restaurant.2935 Providence Rd.BlockAndGrinder.com

CarrburritosCarrburritos originally made a home in Carrboro, NC and has recently opened a second location in David-son. The Mexican eatery boasts the motto ‘fresh, made right before your eyes’. You pick one of the classics - quesadilla, burrito, tacos, tostado or another – then fill it with one of the many options, like the slow roasted pork with tomatillos and beer, the mashed sweet potatoes with caramel-ized onions or the house-made spicy pork sausage. Choose from one of the six kinds of salsa, ranging from mild to wild, and a cool margarita to complete your Carrburritos experience. 445 South Main St. Davidson, NCCarrburritos.com

Nom Nom BurgerParktowne Center is welcoming Nom Nom Burger, an Asian-inspired burger bar, to the Charlotte. Nom Nom Burg-er will bring gourmet burgers to the Myers Park area with true Asian flare. An opening date has yet to be set but crews are working hard to open their doors to the waiting public. 1600 East Woodlawn Rd.Park Towne Shopping Center

Nan and Byron’sA new concept from the creators of 5Church is making a home in South End. Nan and Byron’s is setting up shop in the old Vinnie’s Raw Bar loca-tion. The restaurant is gearing up to serve ‘Traditional-American’ food, like the glazed chicken wings, and is cur-rently mixing, shaking and concocting its own specialty cocktail list. The lo-cation is calling for a summer opening and is sure to be South End’s newest hot spot. 1714 South Blvd.NanAndBryons.com

Miyagi’s Asian FusionIn the heart of NoDa lies a new Ko-rean barbeque place, ready for you to stop by. Miyagi’s Asian Fusion opened its doors in December and the owner describes it as a blend of Korean bar-

beque, Sushi and Asian fusion. You’ll find all the Korean must-haves here including six different types of beef, sushi, rice, noodle dishes and tasty appetizers like the Mandoo, which are dumplings with minced beef, veg-etables and rice noodles served with soy scallion dipping sauce. The tuna nachos are another dish frequently recommended. The tuna is tossed in a scallion sauce to pump up the flavor and topped with avocado, wasabi and spicy aioli. And the best part? Miyagi’s is open seven days a week until 2am. Midnight sushi? Yes, please. 3220 North Davidson St.MiyagisNoDa.com

Chuy’sIf you know Chuy’s, you don’t need to bother to read this – you’re prob-ably already eagerly awaiting the res-taurant’s opening in South Park. The Austin based eatery will open it’s first North Carolina location here in Char-lotte and is rumored to be taking the spot of Zink’s American Grill, which closed its doors at the end of Febru-ary. Chuy’s serves traditional Tex-Mex cuisine in an eccentric style – you’ll see what we mean soon enough. The restaurant is known for crafting Elvis shrines and throwing a birthday bash, complete with Elvis imperson-

ator, each year on the King’s birthday on January 8th. Chuy’s has quite the loyal following and the noise about its new home is already fueling hungry customers. 4310 Sharon Rd. | Chuys.com

AZN Asian CuisineNestled in Piedmont Town Center, AZN Asian Cuisine opened in Decem-ber. The two-story restaurant features a spacious 55-seat outdoor patio, an open air conversation bar and an in-timate sushi bar. Open for lunch and dinner, AZN aims to bring the tradition-al Asian dishes to the diner, but in an upscale way. While you’ll find all your favorite dishes, and some specials of the house, AZN is looking to set itself apart by showing patrons what fine dining in the Far East really is. Stop by after work as AZN offers many of their appetizers and lighter dishes on their happy hour menu, available every day of the week, as well as an impressive cocktail list, compiled of delightful cocktails and extensive Sake options.4620 Piedmont Row Dr.AZNRestaurant.com

New Year. New Resolutions. Drink Smart. The topic of discussion this time of the year is always the same. It’s all about New Year’s resolutions, cleaning out clos-ets, spending less money, ex-ercising more, cleansing and detox diets. Diets, diets, diets.

We all know that drinking and dieting don’t mix. Alcohol is empty calories, quickly con-verts to sugar and lowers our inhibitions so we are inclined to eat more. However, for most of us, drinking is a part of weekends, tailgating, birth-days, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, travel, going out to dinner, coming home after a hard day, vacations, lake trips,

Page 31: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

29

camping trips, barbecues, any sports function, Sunday Fun-day… OK, I think you get the picture. With that being said, here are some recipes, tips and info on how to not let drinking become dangerous to your diet.

Vodka Cranberry/Soda/Straight: My go to cocktail when dieting is 1.5 shot of vodka (98 calories) with a low or no calorie mixer, such as Soda or a diet cranberry juice (Ocean Spray’s Diet Cranberry Juice has only 5 calories). Another op-tion if you are a little more seasoned in drinking it is to drink vodka straight with ice or with water. Now with all of the in-sane amount of flavored vodkas, this is an option. Be smart about it though…if it is flavored liked something that has a lot of calories in real life like Whip Cream or Cake; it will have more sugar than most flavored vodkas. I recommend: Skyy Dragon Coconut (60 calories) Three Olives Grape Vodka (69 calories), Stoli Raspberry (60 calories)

Mimosa: Now you can also enjoy a very low calorie mimosa. Combine 2 oz. of Minute Maid Light orange juice (12 calories) and 3 oz. of champagne (78 calories). And voila! A 90 calorie mimosa!

Bacardi Superior & Diet Coke: A 1.5 shot of Bacardi Supe-rior (97 calories) with Diet Coke (0 calories) is a great option when you are out where they may not have calorie free mix-ers. Almost every place carries Bacardi and Diet Coke.

My favorite option…Sugar Free Red Bull & Vodka: If you are someone who wants, “wings” when you are out, Sugar Free Red Bull (10 calories) mixed with 1.5 shot of Vodka (98 calories) is a great option.

Three Tips to Curb your Alcohol Calories1. Game Plan. Before going out to the cocktail party or girls night, make sure you have a plan. Give your-self a number of cocktails you are going to drink and cut back on calories during the day in anticipation. Eat a light snack before you go so you won’t get tipsy with the first drink and you will be less tempted to dive into the food. Always be aware of your own personal limits. Don’t drink too much, and, of course, don’t drink and drive.

2. Alternate alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks to save calories. After you finish one cocktail, glass of wine or beer, have a glass of water or the sneaky “mocktail” -- a nonalcoholic, preferably zero-calorie beverage (like soda or sparkling water with a lime) that looks like the real thing. This strategy helps you not over-consume calories and alcohol and it also helps you stay hydrated so your head will thank you in the morning!

3. Keep it Simple. Choose wine, light beer, or simple cocktails made with low-calorie mixers. Just as you might order your salad with dressing on the side, don’t be shy about asking for your cocktail your way…you can save up to 100 calories depending on the type mixer you choose.

Mix cocktails with water, club soda, low calorie juices, artificial sweeteners or sugar-free syrups for easy calorie savings. Fruit and veggie juices can be good choices because they are lower in calories than some other mixers and contain vitamins and antioxidants. Still, be careful of fruit juices because even though they are more nutritious, their calories can add up quickly.

Page 33: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

31

Here are some smart mixers:• Diet soda or diet tonic: 0 calories• Orange juice (6 oz): 84 calories• Light orange juice (8 oz): 50 calories• Cranberry juice cocktail (8 oz): 136 calories• Light cranberry juice (8 oz): 40 calories• Light lemonade (8 oz): 5 calories• Coffee, tea: 0 calories• Lemon or lime juice (1/2 oz): 10 calories• Monin or Torani’s sugar-free syrups: 0

These drinks may not be as tasty as that 490 calorie Pina Coloda, but being able to keep to a diet, work on my New Years resolutions and still enjoy a few drinks while doing so sounds good to me! I hope you give a few of these a try…and Happy New Year!

Cheers! Lauren NguyenRepublic National Distributing Company

Acupuncture: Point your health and wellness in the right directionIn this issue we take a look at an ancient healing form that is mak-ing roaring headlines in our modern day landscape of medicine and health care: acupuncture. Traditional acupuncture has been used in Asian countries for effective and gentle therapy of pain and common health problems. Acupuncture is a minimally invasive technique founded in Eastern Medicine but can have neuro-phys-iological consequences to help boost your health and wellness, pain management, recovery from injury or athletic performance. A treatment of acupuncture fundamentally involves the application

Page 35: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

33

of small needles (many times, if applied well, they can hardly be felt) which have a smaller diameter than needles used for blood tests by your physician. The needles are applied in spe-cific points or regions to help derive a particular response by your body, based on stimulation of your body’s nervous sys-tem at these particular points.

Use in nearly every country in the world, acupuncture has grown to be widely studied and utilized by medical and health professionals. In more recent decades, acupuncture has been used in western countries, earning endorsements by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a supportive or primary treatment technique. It is now well regarded as part of the practice of medicine, complementing modern medical practice rather than being regarded as an alternative form of treatment. With strongly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) roots, acu-puncture has now evolved to be taught at medical schools across North America to physicians, including at UCLA, Syra-cuse and McMaster University, amongst others.

Traditional Chinese Medicine’s acupuncture approaches used early viewpoints on human physiology in relation to health and disease. The early Chinese believed that health and disease had harmonious balance interactions with the universe around us. This included attitudes that cells in our bodies could func-tion with “organ electric fields”, or the concept of “Qi”. The classic Chinese medical model predicates that symptoms and treatment design were organized by the body’s vital energy force referred to as Qi. The Chinese proposed that this en-ergy brought warmth and stimulates functions of organs. In some other cultures, similar concepts evolved from this notion as well including the Greek concept of “pneuma” and “prana”, the latter of which stems from the Indian culture. Today, some TCM acupuncture practitioners still use this similar approach.

Page 36: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

34

This may include a diagnosis and treatment based on sys-tematic evaluation, looking at symptoms, pulse, tongue and ear exam. The Chinese also believed that the energy flowing through your body which helped to govern health moved in specific directions hence the common referral to acupuncture meridians, most notably Yin and Yang.

More recently however, is the application of “contemporary” or “medical” acupuncture. This form of acupuncture adopts many of the same treatment points of TCM, however incor-porates a modern application of clinical anatomy and nervous system function. It is this approach which has led to innova-tive applications of acupuncture, including at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals for injured or rehabilitating veterans. This has also grabbed the attention professional players including NFL

Page 37: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

35

players who report receiving acupuncture treatment on a reg-ular basis surround game time. Acupuncture has been used for aiding in low back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, head-aches and nerve pain, amongst other uses. Acupuncture is a relatively, very safe and non-pharmacological (drug) option. It is also very relaxing and has been shown to help improve some functions in the brain. A colleague of mine Dr. Joseph Armour, in Charleston, SC notices, “Most of my patients with abnormal neural activity, have responded well to acupuncture to restore proper adaptive health potential coupled with other therapies.”

For your health and wellness, acupuncture may be a worth-while complement to caring for your body and mind!

Burn MORE Fat in LESS Time! The warm weather is quickly approaching and with this come the thoughts of the new body that you are going to make for yourself to celebrate and the new admirers that you are going to gain at the beach this Summer. When you think about all of this you can literally feel the sand between your toes as you stand there watch-ing Channing Tatum run towards you in slow motion with his arms outreached…and then you remember, it’s time to go to the gym. This would be great except for the fact that you HATE the gym and the only thing worse than the gym is the work to be done once you are there. Does this sound like you? If so, then you have nothing to worry about because it doesn’t have to be that bad and although I can’t promise you Channing Tatum, I can promise you that your dream body IS possible in less time than you think!

The goal to be tackled for you is most likely fat loss, and you will be happy to know that there are quick and efficient ways to ac-complish this seemingly impossible goal. Some people love that burn-ing, sweaty feeling of a two hour self-inflicted ass kicking on multiple cardio machines, at the same time, with one hand lifting a weight and the other hand holding a small child above your head with a heart rate monitor telling you that you’re “in the zone”. I assume that this is not you (at least I hope not) so we are going to

resort to the more sensible technique of burning MORE calo-ries with LESS time in the gym through the use of Tabatas.

First things first, no Tabatas are not the new Twinkie and they can not be eaten, rather they are a form of high intensity inter-vals designed to burn calories during your exercise and even MORE calories in the days to follow! How long do these Ta-batas last you may ask? The answer to this question is four minutes…yes FOUR minutes and I promise you that they will knock your blubber back a notch and have you ready for your bikini in no time (I mean girls, no guys in bikinis). Although very intense, in my training experiences most all of my cli-ents would agree that this four minutes of fury trumps the long

Page 42: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

40

hours of traditional cardio any day and the best part is it can be done in the gym or at home!

The first step is to choose a move or a type of cardio to use, I will use the exer-cise bike as an example. Make sure that you have your water bottle with

you, with water in it of course so that it is readily available to drink or dump on yourself throughout the process. Next, you want to begin pedaling so that the bike will come on and you will then set your resistance to a fair difficulty (5-8 out of 20) since we will be sprinting all out but not fly off of the bike. With your second timer ticking either on your watch or on the bike, wait until you get to an even minute after your warm up (2-3 minutes) for effective timing and SPRINT all out for 20 sec-onds! After the 20 seconds of sprinting you then completely STOP for 10 seconds before sprinting again for another 20 seconds. You will repeat the sprint / stop rotation eight times for a total of eight all out sprints and eight 10 second breaks. The awesome thing about this Tabata format is that you are sprinting only as fast as you can and not being forced too far beyond what you can do as you would be on a treadmill so it is a safe method. The primary focus is to be sure that you have water, a towel and a soft place to lay after the four minutes is over since the lying around and moaning after usually takes longer than the Tabata itself.

Although it may sound intense it should also sound great to you that you can lose fat and tone up in just four minutes as

Page 43: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

41

opposed to the 30-60 minute sessions of cardio you were used to or may have never tried before. Fitness goals are strongly mo-mentum based and the earlier we can gain that momentum in the form of results the bet-ter, so the next time you roll to the gym replace your long, bor-ing cardio with a Ta-bata. You will see re-sults from this intense method of cardio so give it a try by adding it into your workouts just twice a week and watch the fat loss hap-pen! If you have any

Erin Go Bragh! “Ireland Forever”

Erin Go Bragh! “Ireland Forever” is the true meaning to this Gaelic phrase, but growing up as a kid I was told by my Father and Uncle that the meaning was “Drink until you puke”. …I kind of like the old man’s version better. Puking is never my goal when out boozing but when it does happen, it’s usually due to a random shot of a something opposite of what I have already been shooting. The random friend I haven’t seen in a while who insists of taking something odd or even me trick-ing myself to take a fruity shot of some-thing besides my normal whisky in hopes that it might actually wake me up, an eye opener if you will.

Page 47: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

45

With St. Patrick’s Day fall-ing on a Sunday night I may be saving my eye openers for the day time events. Most importantly Charlotte’s 16th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade falls on the day before. Surely I will be bellied up some where on the 17th catching

a buzz immediately after waking up, but the real shamrocks & shenanigans will be coming out at the parade, one of my favorite days in Charlotte! If you have never been to the St. Patrick’s Day parade, you have neglected the best Saturday afternoon party this city has to offer.

You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy the festivities on this day. But then again if you care not to drink early in the day & cringe at the beautiful sound of bagpipes this may not be the Saturday afternoon for you. My tradition of going to Savannah, GA for St. Patrick’s was replaced by Charlotte’s parade years ago when age and responsibility started to kick in. Both of which will go out the window after my first beer and shot at the start of the parade. I might as well be 19 with a fake ID and no conception of what paying a bill even means. By the end of the parade, my bank ac-count will imaginably have had thousands of dollars deposited as I insist to buy peoples drinks left and right. I may even high five a stranger, attempt to make out with my wife in public and even try a new dance move in the bar….all by two in the afternoon. Seriously, what other Saturday afternoon in the QC can you get this out of control along with hundreds of people doing the same?

Along with the parade is the worlds’, not the countries’, but world’s largest pub crawl. Rich and Bennett’s 13th Annual Pub Crawl will be adding fuel to this green colored fire on Saturday.

Page 48: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

46

The Irish corner is always the spot to be during this day; the Irish Corner to me is 5th and Tryon where you will find Ri Ra’s and my favorite Connolly’s. As a matter of fact, there’s a 99% chance that if I am downtown any, I will be in dark ass Connolly’s drinking and listening to some of the best music you’ll hear in a bar thanks to the bartenders set list.

Don’t fear there will be green beer the day of St. Patrick’s Day in town that’s for sure. Downtown and the surrounding boroughs will be rocking-naturally, but off the beaten paths will be the way to stumble too. Bars close to home where you can walk to different

joints and try different specials are right up my alley, especially on a Sunday. Even though every time I am on Montford Drive it feels like St. Patrick’s Day. Brazwell’s on Montford Dr. and a few more bars are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with live entertainment and specials on Sunday starting at noon.

Parties will be held on the day of all across town; from Kennedy’s and the surrounding area bars walking distance off 7th Street, to bars throughout South Charlotte. With its Boston influence, and its’ obvious heavily Irish population, you can bet Beantown Tav-ern in Matthews will be throwing down on the 17th. Sheppard’s pie, bands, green beer and everything else you need and could ask for on St. Patrick’s Day will be at the Beaner. Last year, down the road at Finz Raw Bar sold record breaking pounds of proper Corn Beef & Cabbage (proper Corn Beef mind you) and will do it again this year as well as have live music and specials all day

Page 49: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

47

long! If weather permits, the patio at Finz will be rocking and you can walk to and from both bars.

So to all that, don’t be thrown off this year by the 17th falling on a school night, the real St. Patrick’s Day to me is and will always be the parade and the day time festivities throughout the weekend. Come Saturday morning I will get a good food fix out of the way to provide a nice layer to soak up enough booze to flood a small village in Ireland. As I squeeze in to my old Dropkick Murphys Tee with my age clearly bulging above my belt, I will savor the moment of this once a year tradition of not giving a shit for one afternoon…or two, actually three.

I’ll need a Bloody Mary come Monday. And with March Madness here I foresee having enough hair of the dog to make myself an entire rug this month. That’s right the good times are killing me for another reason to be passing the pen after this issue. Rushing drinks before last call has reformed to pounding them before traf-fic hits maybe a night cap after a dinner outing. I keep catching my pumpkin earlier and earlier each year and quite honestly I’m very content with it. Whether you have read my articles the past few years or just skipped to look at the pictures you can officially use this issue as a classic commemorative drink coaster now.

Erin Go Bragh my friends- my old man’s version that is.

Cheers!Sean Flynn, Nightlife Editor

A Day at the DerbyWhat America has known as “The Derby”, is rapidly approaching this spring season. Although most may not make it to Kentucky, Charlotte has another alternative for them. Derby Days; hosted by Charlottes Young Affiliates of the Mint, as it has been for the past 23 years since its founding year in 1990. In fact this event has been the longest running event of the Young Affiliates of the Mint since it was established in 1990. This year, they are kicking it off once again in the beautifully luscious front lawn of the Mint Museum on Randolph Rd. (2730 Randolph Rd. Charlotte N.C 28207).

The event will be held on May 4, 2013, from 4pm to 8pm, with an after party to follow. Complimentary beer and wine will be served for those that pur-chase tickets. There will also be a cash bar, lawn games, live music, a 50/50 cash raffle, silent auction, hat contest, and the best part, a large screen viewing of the Kentucky Derby LIVE. Of course you don’t want to miss that!

This year the hosts of Derby Days, the Young Affiliates of the Mint, will be in partnership with retail store, Lilly Politzer, and on April 11th they will be

hosting a shopping party at their South Park mall location from 5pm to 9pm. Lilly themed prints will also be integrated into the decor of the event so be sure to check that out!

There will also be a hat vendor on site for those who come to have the ability to com-plement their wardrobe with a unique hat to display at the event.

This event is all about showing off the latest fashion of the season, so you’ll be sure to see what’s hot in fashion for the summer! The style of dress for the occasion is Derby chic. Make sure you do your homework and plan to come dressed accordingly. Don’t want to do the homework? That’s okay be-cause we have already done some for you! What is derby attire consist of you ask? Lots of sundresses, seersuckers, and of course the derby themed hats! If you still need help picking out just the right thing, drop into the shopping party event at Lilly Politzer April 11, 2013. 80HD Skate Co is a lifestyle brandElevate Lifestyle: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your brand?Alex Ramsey: My name is Alex Ramsey. I graduated from CPCC Adver-tising + Graphic Design in July of 2012. A month later I started my own company 80HD Skate co, which is a lifestyle brand. By adding unique graphics with the functionality of heterogeneous products, 80HD parallels the Lifestyle of skateboarding. Our goal is to continue spreading the love of skateboarding by creating unique and quality products.

EL: Could you describe the products and clothes for the 80HD line?AR: We make t-shirts and skate decks. Our t-shirts are all super lightweight ring spun + combed + preshrunk cotton with a great feel to the fabric. It all starts with the fabric for me. I want to have a high-end fashion t-shirt for my customers. All of our t-shirt graphics are screen printed locally at InkFloyd. Also known as Saturday Warehouse, one of the most coveted skate spots in the area. I am very appreciative to have Dave helping me any way he

Page 63: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

can. Our skate decks are all 7 ply, 100% Canadian Maple Hardwood manufactured in the USA with a heat press transfer for the graphics. This makes our decks strong, reliable, and the graphics last through some shredding!

EL: Where can people find your products?AR: All of our products are currently sold on our web-store 80HDSkateCo.com and in Armada Skate Shop located at 1200 The Plaza #1 Charlotte, NC. Go see Pat and Matt, some cool dudes, plus the homies Zay and Trey kill it for them too. We are really stoked to have our products in their shop. We are also on instagram @80hdskateco and twitter @80hdskateco; we offer dis-counts and package deals exclusively through those two social media platforms. Our Facebook is usually just to

keep people informed about news, products, and our skaters.

EL: Do you currently have any other business ventures?AR: I currently free lance graphic design and can be reached at [email protected].

EL: What inspires your design?AR: I try and keep an open mind to my influences. Everyone can teach you something, so it’s important to pay attention to everything. I feel like inspiration cannot be generated. It’s a mindset: a willingness to open up and see the world from different perspectives and interpret it in your own way. Surfing is the root for me.

Page 64: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

62

EL: What is your design motto?AR: #thinkcreatedesign

Think is the research, putting myself in other people’s shoes, that’s my favorite part, it really challenges your mind; it’s fun to be able to do that for a living. Create is when you start generating concepts and developing direction. Making mockups, sketches, designing briefly in the computer, people have different ways to get there. It’s also a great time to involve clients or the end users of the product to help give feed-back on the output. Making mockups, sketches, designing briefly in the computer, people have different ways to get there. For me, design is when you hit the computer ready to go. I try to have an exact plan be-fore I sit down in front of my MacBook. The last thing I want to do is sit at a computer from nine to five. I like to think of it only as a paintbrush, or another tool I use to design things. I just repeat this process until I am satisfied as a designer, and the client gets what they are looking for. Every project is different, sometimes you land it first try sometimes you don’t, and have to retrace your steps and think differently.

Page 65: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

63

EL: Are you going to expand or create more products in the fu-ture?AR: We will always be making more graphics for boards and tees, while releasing new styles of shirts. As far as expanding to different products, we just want to create a few products really well that people can rely on.

EL: What can everyone look forward to from 80HD over the next few months?AR: In the next few months we will be working on releasing our sum-mer line. Also getting our skaters more exposure, Chance Larsen, Maxwell Hutchins, Jackie Harris, Jacob Hinsey and Tracy Watts. We will just be out and about filming and getting photos for magazine sub-missions. Follow our instagram for updates and shots of new and up-coming product.

EL: What is your favorite project so far?AR: Probably would have to be the Dan Millice Mastering collab tee. He was just nominated for a Grammy for Trey Songs Heart Attack so it was cool to have him be down to create! I’ve known Dan since middle

Page 66: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

64

school. He is in NYC mastering music at Engine Room Audio and needed a logo for his website DanMillice.com, and then I mentioned we should do a collabo tee and release it exclusively on my line. He was stoked about the idea. It was also fun to see the creative process translate from music to art and nice to be able to share that with some-one who I’ve known my whole life.

EL: How did you learn the fashion/retail industry?AR: I worked in a surf shop for a little while when living in Wilmington, NC and learned a couple things from my boss and owner Mike Barden. I really try and focus on customer service. I’d rather have twenty five repeat customers than fifty one-time buyers. My grandfather taught me if you take care of the cents then the dollars take care of them-selves.

EL: Why did you choose to market to your audience as a lifestyle brand?AR: I felt that being just a skateboarding brand would limit the audience my company could reach. By branding it as a lifestyle brand, people can really identify with more than just a “oh hey man I skate too” type of marketing strategy. Just because we make skateboards doesn’t mean we can’t be a forward thinking clothing brand.

EL: How do you stay up to date with the fashion trends? AR: I pay attention to the men’s sections when I go to the mall with my girlfriend to stay on top of what fabric’s people are buying, and some of the other things brands do. It seems like everybody is doing a triangle logo print, or a 5-panel triangle hat. I really try to express my soul through my artwork.

Spring 2013 Make Up TrendsTake a step back in time to the 80’s, add a modern day twist, and you have the hottest make up trend for spring 2013! Yes ladies blue eyeshadow is back, but before I lose some of you, hear me out. I’m going to share with you how to create your spring look all the while staying on trend and looking modern and natural. Below are the hottest things happening in make up for skin, eyes, cheeks, and lips this spring season!

Page 79: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

77

Skin/Complexion:When it comes to the look for skin and complexion this spring, it’s ALL about BB Cream! You’ve probably have heard the buzz, but may not really understand what a BB Cream is? This all-in-one Beauty Balm primes, hydrates, evens, brightens, and perfects the skin in one weightless formulation! For those of you that have experienced issues with matching a foundation to your skin, this is your answer. BB cream is not only trace-less on the skin, it is literally goof-proof. As you begin to blend it on the skin, its color adjusts to your complexion leaving it looking radiant and beautiful. This is also great for women who don’t like the feel of make up on the skin. Remember what I always say; your skin and complexion should be the overall focus of your make up. There is nothing hotter or more on trend than great looking skin!

Eyes:It’s all about hues of blues and greens when it comes to the eyes this season. Despite what you may think, blue (or green) eyeshadow can look great when done correctly. You want a wash of the color on the eyes, not too harsh or bold. Gently sweep your blue or green shade from the lash line into the crease. When you keep it sheer, you’re bring-ing attention to the eyes not the eye make-up. Make sure to highlight under the brow with a light shade. Compliment your modern 80’s eye look with black eyeliner deep in the bed of your lashes and complete it with tons of rich black mascara.

Page 80: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

78

Cheeks:Barely there cheeks are on tap this spring! Soft pinks and corals dominated the look of cheeks at New York’s Fashion Week. Cheek color literally should look as if the color is coming from within, like someone just made you blush! I always recommend using a big soft fluffy brush to apply. This is important because this type of brush will lightly pick up the color and lightly lay it down on the skin. Keep in mind that you don’t want to see where the color starts and where it ends. It should be seamless!

Lips:I’m thrilled with this season’s look for lips! Think romantic. Think soft. Think pastel. Beautiful tones of baby doll pinks and lilacs are back with a vengeance! Hello modern 80’s! The great thing is that these colors look great and youth-ful on everyone. I must make mention however, that the bold lip does continue to be on the forefront. If you prefer a very neutral look to your eyes, then a bold lip color is a great option. Hitting the bold lip scene this season are pops of flaming orange and cherry red. I suggest investing in a pastel shade and a bold shade to experiment! Have fun, there are no rules.

Life Trend:This month’s life trend is all about inner beauty. As much fun as it is to play in make-up and beautify the outside, it’s more important to beautify the inside. I believe inner beauty is the direct result of loving yourself and others with an un-conditional love! When we feel good about ourselves, we treat others better. It is through this process of uncondition-al love that we learn to let our inner light shine. As you’re rocking your modern day 80’s eyes and your romantic lips

A Fashion ExperienceErica Hanks may seem like the average Charlotte woman: wardrobe stylist, mother of three, and lover of all things fashion, but she is far from it. Hanks; the creator and co-producer of Front Row Charlotte, had a unique vision and created a fashion experience that is unlike any other.

Front Row Charlotte aims to bring a fresh approach to Charlotte fash-ion events by hosting intimate shows that promote local boutiques and businesses, unveiling their spring collections , and after the show one can immediately purchase anything she saw on the runway.

“I would like to put on this event every spring, bring in local jewelry de-signers and local boutiques, and keep [the merchandise] at the same price point each year so show-goers know what to expect,” Hanks said.

Hanks came up with the concept based on her dissatisfaction with the status quo. She loves going to fashion events and loves seeing what comes down the runway, but by the time she gets to the store to pur-chase what she saw, the piece is gone.

Hanks wanted to create an event where one can literally purchase the piece on the spot. She had her reservations about the notion of “show and shop;” she was “worried people wouldn’t get it” and that “no one else wanted a show like I did.” But when local stylists (and co-producers of Front Row) Joey Hewell and Effie Loukas heard her idea, they fell in love and encouraged her to pursue it.

Another unique feature of Front Row Charlotte can be inferred from its namesake: there’s only one row: The front row. It will be a snake-like runway where second and third rows are obsolete.

“I have gone to so many fashion events where you can’t even see the clothes or shoes unless you’re in the front row” says Hanks. The single row will allow anyone from, the stay-at-home mom to the well-known fashion editor to have the best seat in the house.

Not only is this a great cause for fashion-kind, this is a great cause for humankind. All of the proceeds go to Safe Alliance, a charity benefitting battered, beaten, and sexually abused women. According to Hanks, “the price of two tickets gives a woman an entire day’s worth of services at the shelter.” Hearing Hanks talk about the charity is as moving as her gesture of donating every penny to the cause. (www.safealliance.org)

The first annual Front Row Charlotte event sold out within 10 days of go-ing live! Hanks is obviously pleased with the sell-out and how smoothly the event planning process has progressed, especially because of her previous doubts that the concept would be ill-received.

“I have never put on a show before so it was daunting, but my co-producers Joey and Effie have been fundamental.”

Front Row Charlotte will be held on Thursday February 28th at 7pm. The featured boutiques at the event are: Chezelle, KK Bloom, Lotus, Monkees of Lake Norman, and Olive Online Bou-tique. Participating jewelry designers are: Mere Jewelry and Towne & Reese. Sale Diem, new locally-based “Gilt Group” for boutiques will also be showcased that night and will have a booth where everyone can become a member to receive deals from lo-cal boutiques.

The event will be held in the massive warehouse connected to Triple C Brewing Company, and the local brew masters will cre-ate a “Front Row Ale” just for event goers! Along with Roots Farm Food Truck and Charleston Fashion Week (the NY Fashion week of the South), DJ Arthur Brothers spinning tunes, it will surely be a night for everyone to enjoy and anticipate the beginning of spring.

Triple C Brewing is located at 2900 Griffith St. Valet parking will be available. Gift bags will be given to all attendees. Doors will open at 6:15 for press/bloggers and 6:30 to the public. Show will begin promptly at 7pm.

Wearing Your “A” GameMen’s Fashion has come to Charlotte with a BANG! The south has always had an affinity for fashion, but is rarely viewed as a go to fashion capital, unlike larger metro cities, and as for it being geared towards the fellas, well that’s being slow to come as well. Not since the prohibition has Southern men’s fashion been revered as a leader of the industry, and simply put the south has risen again! Charlotte in recent years has put itself on the map in all possible avenues over the years. Most widely known for our banking industry, we have been on the nations radar from HGTV, to Food Network breakout dining, the DNC and over the past few years been Hollywood’s go-to city for location shootings of blockbuster films as well as awards win-ning TV series. Charlotte, we have arrived, or are arriving at this nation’s doorstep. All there is left to do now is ready ourselves and dress the part.

Women’s fashion has always been in the forefront of the industry so the ladies have always had an advantage to be in the know of the latest trends and “what’s hot”. Most men had to wing it, or look to the stars for inspiration. But today’s man is coming into his own with such a flair of style that every-

one is watching. Trendiness mixed with individual inspiration and flair has the fellas boasting all sorts of options and fashion forward trends. A few area stores help with that inspiration and give men something just as unique to choose from. Gone are the days of sending him into Sears for a prepackaged buttoned down tie-set. Your man needs his clothing to assist in defining his style.

Trim it, Tease it, Toss it, but whateveryou do, do not Tame it!These few words express exactly what I felt when sitting down with Ms. Eri-ca Arcilesi, owner of Salon e Arcilesi in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her motto is words written by Elsie de Wolfe, “I’m going to make everything around me beautiful – that will be my life”, and her work defines the saying the proof is in the pudding! You just had to be there to believe it! I witnessed head pieces in the shape of bird cages, bow ties, and chandeliers! Body painting that resembled murals with distinguished characteristics of its architectural ele-ments (helloooo 6-packs!). Even when you thought it couldn’t get any better, this Charlotte native took me down memory lane of some of her creative up-dos from her latest fashion spreads. It exhibited the various color treatments she has completed on the sets of commercials and various television series, as well as the wedding photos where each tress showcased her passion for transforming hair into Art.

Erica Arcilesi is this year’s Creative Director for Hairstyling & Makeup at North Carolina’s largest fashion show created by Charlotte Seen. With al-most 7 years in the business and a decade following family in the beauty industry, Erica has challenged herself to exceed expectations by taking ordi-nary shapes, colors, things and adding a twist! Erica has trained throughout North America under celebrity stylists and top educators, receiving several certifications.

Salon e Arcilesi is a full service hair salon located at 12335 N. Community House Road, Suite D Studio 28, Charlotte, NC 28277. Her clients are taught to “expect the unexpected” and enjoy a unique, personalized, and luxuri-ous experience. Although, Erica lives to create dramatic transformations, she also prides herself on setting trends with extensions, waxing, color,

Page 95: March 2013 "Spring Fashion Issue"

and makeup. Since Salon e Arcilesi focuses completely on the client, all sessions are by private appointment only, to ensure that everyone leaves “looking and feeling how he/she deserves.”

Speaking of passion and de-sire, I asked Erica what are her secrets to success and her responses possessed true elegance and sincerity. First, she spoke much about family. Home is where her heart lies. She praises her family and friends for their continuous support and en-couragement. Secondly, she mentioned “do not be afraid to fail”. Always remember, “The greater the risk, the greater the reward.” And finally, she truly believes in the concept that “you must put in the work, starting from the ground up!” When asked who inspires her, she quickly blurted out a

gentleman by the name of Nicolas Jurnjack. After I researched him, I realized there was a quote used to describe him – “Styles may change, but what he brings is more than style – it’s art” and Ms. Erica Arcilesi I feel exactly the same way about you! I wish you much success on your grand opening on March 10th, 2013!
