PRAYeR oF coNFessIoN (unison)Wondrous God, forever seeking us, willingly forgiving us, we should be amazed at your grace. Our desire to be faithful is woven with our hesitancy to go the extra mile. We focus on keeping life in control, in balance, and get angry at the interruptions, the prob-lems that ruin our plans, mess up our days. We never entertain the thought that you may be speaking to us in the turmoil, in the mess-iness of life.

Silent prayerloving God, we are a tangled vine. We are so bent on our desires and our plans that we squeeze you out. Holy God, you are there in all the circumstances of life. Prune us, and train us to grow in your holy way. Amen.

Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a Belgian-born organist, composer and educator who spent most of his working life in Paris. He was organist at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde from 1858 until his death, and was appointed to the prestigious post of Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire in 1872. He wrote many extended organ works which are now part of the core repertoire for that instrument. The motet setting of Panis Angelicus heard this morning is his most enduring vocal composition.

*AFFIRMATIoN oF FAITH

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prohpets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through scriptures, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.

PRAYeRs oF THe PeoPle ANd THe loRd’s PRAYeROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

coMMUNIoN oF THe loRd’s sUPPeR8:45—As the ushers indicate, the congregation will come forward to receive communion. Gluten-free bread is available on the communion table. After receiving the bread, participants should dip the bread in the chalice and partake. For those who do not want wine, grape juice is in the smaller, outer chalice. For those unable to come forward, elders are available to serve you where you are seated.

11:00—The elements used in the Lord’s Supper are wine and bread. Gluten free bread is available. Please alert an elder of your request. For those who do not wish to drink wine, grape juice is in the outer rim of the trays. When passing the bread to your neighbor, say, “This is the Bread of Life.” When passing the wine to your neighbor, say, “This is the Cup of Salvation.”

Spiritual Practice for LentDAILY ExAMEN Sunday, March 2 12:00 pm, B108

daily examen, initiated by Ignatius of loyola, is rooted in the assumption that God speaks to us through our deepest feelings. The practice involves taking time each day to reflect and name the occasions when we felt most alive and grateful, as well as the occasions when we felt most brittle and drained. These reflections can provide the seeds for our personal prayers of thanksgiving and confession. To help encourage the exploration of the practice of daily examen, an overview and practice session will be offered to the congregation immediately following 11:00 am worship on sunday, March 2, in B108. duration will be 20 minutes so that those who want to join the congregational lunch will be able to do so.
